PRESIDENT’S CORNER Quote of the week We always hear about the rights of democracy, but the major responsibility of it is participation. Wynton Marsalis

Club & Board Update Happy Songkran I wish you all a Happy Songkran. Unfortunately, I completely forgot our last weekly meeting was on Thailand’s new year’s eve otherwise I would have cancelled it. That might be the reason only 6 members and 2 visitors found the way to Patong. However, we had some good chat and talks and postponed the presentation/teaching of PP Sam and PP David about membership. VP Peter Harris used the time to update all of us about the current projects, especially Ban Ya and the dental mission starting next week. We also touched on the outcome of the fee survey

THANKS and GOODBYE Pascal De Corte, our loyal and long-term friend from the RC Zottegem/Belgium has left Phuket on Thursday. He informed us to be back in about October and we are all looking forward welcoming him again. But before he left, Pascal made, one more time, a generous donation to our Charity Funds and donated THB 20,000 for a Life Home project. Thank you very much Pascal.

District Assembly May 6-8 Not one single member followed my call of last week and only some current board members are attending the District Assembly. I could now start a long debate what Rotary is all about but I leave the answer to each individual member ..

Last Meeting – Tuesday 12th April The meeting opened at the normal time and there was a light but engaged group of attendees. The scheduled guest speaker PP Sam and PP David were scheduled to speak about membership. However as the attendance was quite low it was decided to have a round table discussion and hold the membership topic for a later date.

There was a lot of contribution and convivial discussion from all in a relaxed atmosphere. Topics included the arrangements for the Rotary Dental Mission with 50 dentists and support staff arriving next week. Hans and Peter have been working to organize the big event with an estimated 500 patients to be treated during the mission, which will be held at Patong Hospital. The free dental service will be on offer and Peter has scheduled children from Baan Ya learning center, Childwatch, Moken villages, and Patong workers to attend. Peter will advise on support needed from all of us. There is a dinner celebration scheduled for 21 April at Paradise Beach Full Moon party and all are encouraged to attend to show support for the great team of Rotarian visitors. The Water system project was also discussed; which is working to provide clean drinking water systems for the schools and learning centers in Patong. The funding is a bit short for this project and options were reviewed including seeking District Assistance and reducing the number of schools to be served. This project is being undertaken with the support of Rotary clubs and District in Japan. The Japanese donors will travel here for the handover of the first school to coincide with their club anniversary. Rotary Club of Kushiro - Hokkaido There was discussion about the application for a Global Grant to support the Baan Ya learning center and Peter is working on the grant with the European clubs. These are among the larger projects that RCoPB has undertaken and VP Peter was acknowledged for his leadership. There was an active discussion about club dues and this was fruitful but the decisions will rest with PE Richard and his board. The District Training Assembly is scheduled for 6-8 May and all are welcome, this is the training session for the new year board and committee chairpersons. Please contact PP David if you wish to join the training. Attendance: 12-4- 2016 This is Pascal's last meeting with us for a few months as he returns Total Members: 34 to Belgium; we hope to see him again soon! Mrs. Ravioli comes to visit her son Antonio for dinner. He lives with a female roommate, Maria. During the course of the meal, his mother couldn't help but notice how pretty Antonio's roommate is. Over the course of the evening, while watching the two interact, she started to wonder if there was more between Antonio and his roommate than met the eye. Reading his mom's thoughts, Antonio volunteered, "I know what you must be thinking, but I assure you, Maria and I are just roommates.''

About a week later, Maria came to Antonio saying, "Ever since your mother came to dinner, I've been unable to find the silver sugar bowl. You don't suppose she took it, do you?" "Well, I doubt it, but I'll e-mail her, just to be sure." So he sat down and wrote an e-mail: Dear MaMa, I'm not saying that you "did" take the sugar bowl from my house. I'm not saying that you "did not" take it. But the fact remains that it has been missing, ever since you were here for dinner. Your Loving Son Antonio Several days later, Antonio received a response e-mail from his MaMa which read: Dear Son, I'm not saying that you "do" sleep with Maria, and I'm not saying that you "do not" sleep with her. But the fact remains that if she was sleeping in her OWN bed, she would have found the sugar bowl by now. Your Loving MaMa

Doctor: “Your liver is enlarged”. Patient: “Does that mean it has space for more whisky?” This is called positive thinking. *********** Lady to her dietician: What I am worried about is my height and not my weight. Dietician: How come? Lady: According to my weight, my height should be 7.8 feet. Now this is called positive attitude. ********** Self confidence at its peak A man wrote to SBI (India’s largest lender): “My cheque was returned with remark ‘insufficient funds’. I want to know whether it refers to mine or the Bank?”

My daughter asked me for a pet spider for her birthday, so I went to our local pet shop and they were £70!!! Blow this, I thought, I can get one cheaper off the web. Local Police hunting the 'knitting needle nutter', who has stabbed six people in the rear in the last 48 hours, believe the attacker could be following some kind of pattern.

Seaside sessions on leadership and peace in Sri Lanka The team of Leadership Retreat Peace Fellows

By Lucas Wolf (and the team of Leadership Retreat Peace Fellows) On the southern coast of Sri Lanka, there is a special place just north of Galle where the waves crash over the rocks after their long journey across the Indian Ocean. The rains arrive in the early evening to inundate the verdant, tropical lands. This was the setting for the second Rotary Peace Fellow Leadership Retreat from 7-9 March, attended by 10 former Rotary Peace Fellows and one gifted facilitator from Northern Ireland, Susan McEwen. We arrived from all corners of the globe, including Juba, Mindanao, Nicaragua, Somaliland, Kurdistan, London, Ottawa, Nigeria, and Sri Lanka itself. McEwen is the Head of Programs at the prestigious Corrymeela Community, Northern Ireland’s oldest peace and reconciliation organization. Along with two of the peace fellows, she designed the retreat to highlight the importance of reflective practice, echoing the works and teachings of John Paul Lederach. It also incorporated the unique ethos and experience of Corrymeela and the dedication to service and peace inherent in Rotary’s philosophy. Reflective practice is designed to allow practitioners to dig deeper into their own perspectives, observations, and experiences, while also taking time to listen carefully to fellow participants and enhance listening and communication skills. It proved invaluable for sharing lessons and struggles from the field and discovering how we can unite to form networks of resilience. Susan’s mastery of facilitation, dynamic energy, and skill in discussing sensitive areas surrounding peace and conflict resolution helped us grow together tremendously. There was a special group chemistry from the start and it was clear that these hours together marked critical building blocks for our professional development and personal well-being. Sri Lanka is a unique and inspiring destination for such a Peace Fellows reflection: On the one hand it possesses all the magic and allure of any top tourist destination in the world, but on the other hand, it is a post-conflict country seeking to turn the page and change the dialogue after years of struggles. On the final day of the retreat, Peace fellows received an overview of the post-conflict realities and challenges facing Sri Lanka via a prominent field worker, Ananda Galappatti. This opened up a wider and deeper discussion on our collective experiences in conflict or field settings. Ananda is the founder of the Good Practices Group and the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Services Network. We discussed psychosocial approaches to trauma, reconciliation, and recovery at length and emerged with a much greater understanding of the history and scope of the Sri Lankan struggles, and lessons we can use to inform our own work. Three days is a relatively short time for a retreat, but this session was unique from the beginning. There was a special group chemistry from the start and it was clear that these hours together marked critical building blocks for our professional development and personal well-being.
