CLUB NEWS

April, the Illes Balears Trophy on 13th and 14th June and the Pollensa Trophy on 15th November. FIFTY YEARS According to the information we have available, it was in 1959 that a group of enthusiasts decided to found the Pollensa Yacht Club. In the history section of the Club magazine, readers will find detailed information on the important work done at the time by Javier de Marichalar, Viscount of Eza and Marquis of Ciria. Although the official announcement of the founding of the Club was not made until 23rd April, 1961, it was in October 1959 that the necessary share capital was raised so that the initiative to found the Club could begin. These fifty years of history will soon be told in an interesting book that the historians Joan Torres and Pere Salas are currently working on. STORMS FROM THE WEST AND SOUTHWEST We are used to being battered by serious storms from the first quadrant, but this year this trend has been totally reversed. The worst two gales of recent years occurred between November and January and have seriously affected the port areas of the south of Majorca, where the destruction has caused losses in the millions. More state investment is urgently needed to improve the sheltered areas in some ports.

Dieter Bach, ex-president of the RCNPP, passed away in November

D

ieter Bach, the architect who was very closely linked to the Port of Pollensa Royal Yacht Club, passed away on 10th November last year. He was the second president of the Club and while he was in office important building work took place, such as the RCNPP social club and a dock that was built at no expense to the Club. Dieter Bach succeeded in getting the Directorate General of Coasts to have the building work done at government expense and to permit the Club to run the dock. This was almost the only income for the RCNPP for many years. Throughout his life, Mr. Bach had a home in Pollensa, where he spent long periods of time, both in the summer and during the winter months. He moored a number of his boats in the Port of Pollensa: the “Mar y Roca”, “Mari Rosa”, “Okabango” and “Al Azar”. These boats, which were large for their time, were not berthed at the club, as it did not yet have any berths of its own, but at the breakwater belonging to the Port Public Works department. Dieter Bach was in love with Majorca, Pollensa and the Club. In fact, so great was this love that his name was on the list of the first contributors to the construction of the building. As an architect, he built a number of houses in Puerto Pollensa. His sister Ursula still spends the summer in one of them. During Mr. Bach’s time as president of the RCNPP, his vice-president was Mr. Alfonso Alfaro, who also took part in the negotiations with the Directorate General of Coasts in Madrid and most kindly gave us that information.
