We know patients and families need space. Our Spiritual Care Centre with its quiet Therapeutic Garden will offer patients and loved ones quiet places for reflection, conversation, access to religious services and support from our multi-faith team

Sophie’s story – At about 2.00 in the morning we finally stopped laughing... and I stopped feeling guilty. Mum had been taken to the Royal after a bad fall. By the time I got there she was sat up in bed in her own room, watching her own TV – arm in plaster and a bruised face.
“Oh I’m so sorry Mum. . . I was away. You’ve been all alone.” “No love. When they finished patching me up I had a nap and then my nurse took me down to the Spiritual Care Centre. She said I could chat with volunteers there. You know me! Met someone who lives near our Jane. She’s got diabetes. She said a wee prayer, and I said a few too. It was so peaceful - we even sat out in the quiet garden by the Chapel.” “Anyway we came back up here and watched Emmerdale together in the lovely little sitting room. I’m only just back in bed!” “Well there’s good news Mum. I can stay here tonight! Turns out this armchair turns into an overnight guest bed” I lay next to Mum and we nattered for hours. So funny. Never realised just how mischievous she was when she was young. Probably later than we should, we both dozed off.

Our smart screens will not only allow patients to watch freeview TV. They can order meals through the screens, and doctors can share patient notes on the screens. For patients with dementia, families can add familiar photos from home from a memory stick to screen, to help to reduce patients’ anxiety.
