TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO HOW WE DETECT AND TREAT BREAST DISEASE, WE’RE RAISING £750,000 Every year, 6,000 patients will benefit from our new Breast Unit in the new Royal. 3D mammography offers a greater chance of successful treatment. By imaging breast tissue in more detail, we’ll create a clearer picture. This can help to diagnose cancers and other abnormalities earlier. We’ll also be able to reassure patients who receive normal results with more confidence. Studies have shown that 3D mammography is up to 40% more effective at diagnosing breast cancer than our current 2D mammography. Earlier diagnosis can mean a cancer is less likely to have spread to other parts of the body, giving a better chance of a full recovery.

MARGIE’S story I was referred to the Royal in 2002 . The staff were wonderful at the time and I was given an immediate appointment for me to see a specialist. When the results from my mammogram came back, my specialist said I needed a biopsy. The doctors gave me the news. The results showed that I had breast cancer. I was expecting the worst. You know your own body better than anyone and I knew something wasn’t right. But, it was still a shock to be told I had cancer and very frightening at the time. If I had all the money in the world I’d still choose to be treated here – the staff are all so compassionate and kind. I couldn’t have hoped for better treatment. People think cancer is the end, but I’m proof that with the right treatment you can live for a long time and can make the most of your life. That’s why I’m supporting R Charity’s New Breast Unit Appeal. Thanks to the Royal, I’ve had fourteen great years, and I hope to have at least another fourteen more.
