PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS

2019-2020 RCF FFA President Carter Beaulieu It is currently January of 2020, just over halfway through my Presidency. Serving the Randolph CambriaFriesland as Vice-President junior year and President this year has been the most significant honor of my FFA career. I often look back on the memories made, life lessons learned, and time spent with other individuals who too enjoy agriculture.

Even before becoming an FFA Member, I could picture what it would be like serving as FFA President. If ANY member/officer is hesitating on entering the Presidency race in the future, I cannot emphasize enough how much I encourage you to run. The life lessons, hard work, and dedication out way the difficult times (i.e. waking up at 4:00 a.m. for breakfast). I have expanded my friendships with other members, chapters, and advisors, thanks to my position. Communication, effective and decisive leadership, and commitment are a direct result of serving as President, but only a few of many skills I have learned.

Our chapter is composed of high enrolment from three supportive communities. Our chapter is one of the most respected FFA Chapters in the state and nation; with these stipulations come great responsibility placed upon the President.

I may make serving as President sound intimidating. Still, looking back at where I started at the beginning of the year to now, I have grown tremendously. I am looking forward to being asked to write the past President’s comments to reflect on my time as President!

Now let’s talk less about me and more about this extraordinary chapter. With our FFA Members involvement in SAE’s and the community, we are never without work to do.

We pride ourselves on community involvement and outreach since it is our way of giving back to the most gracious donors to the FFA. Without the donations, this FFA Chapter would look nowhere near the success it preforms. This year again, we continued our involvement with Scholarship Raffle Ticket Sale, Christmas Fruit Sale, Blood Drives partnered with the American Red Cross, Community Corn Carnival Assistance, and the food pantry (more information to come on the food pantry). I want to thank all of you who donated to our FFA Chapter!

Every FFA member is part of our Program of Activities, which is put together by the officer team and myself.

Included in the program is: Growing Leaders, Building Communities, and Strengthening Agriculture. The FFA members are always involved in these areas. They have benefitted our chapter with being the award of a Gold Rated National Chapter or high Silver rating year after year. Along with being Gold Rated Chapter, we are frequently successful with state and national proficiencies.

In 2002, the Eugene Jenkins Land Laboratory was donated to the local Agriculture and FFA Foundation. It consists of 40 acres and with a lake south side. The Land Laboratory is a considerable contributor to the FFA and its reputation. Many of our FFA members have built Supervised Agricultural Opportunities (SAE’S), and new members have the opportunity to develop one as well. They can compete at the state and national level for grants and proficiencies, as well as gather knowledge on their interests on the variety of plants that we grow. A majority of the hours are spent planting, maintaining, and harvesting the fruit and vegetables grown, as well as mowing lawn and pruning trees. In the previous five years, we have invested in beehives to increase our crop quality, starting with four hives to fourteen hives currently. We started with four hives and have expanded to twelve hives this past summer, providing seven members with SAE’s.

Also in the area of SAE development, I want to mention our State and National SAE Grant success. Six State Grants worth over $4,000 and thirty-six National Grants worth $36,000 is a reflection of student SAE commitment. The thirtysix national grant number is over five times any other chapter in the nation.

I am looking forward to the countdown of the months as President, and I am very confident the upcoming months will be just as successful as the previous months. I am determined to have the work I do be in the best interest and hopefully benefit our present members and our future ones as well.

FFA BANQUET SET The Randolph Cambria-Friesland FFA has set the date for its annual awards banquet for Monday, March 30 at 7:00 pm.

Members will be recognized for their achievements and adult supporters as well as all Randolph Agriculture & FFA Foundation donors will be recognized.

The meal will consist of two meats, potato, vegetable, salad, and dessert. More information will follow in the school district newsletter.

We will again have a silent auction with pies, gift certificates, FFA items, nuts from the fruit sale and other items.

The auction assists in defraying the banquet expense which is large but well worth it for our chapter.

COMMENTS FROM THE 2018-2019 FFA PRESIDENT

Lucas Miller Serving as this chapter’s president during 2018-2019 was an experience I will cherish and carry with me forever. This opportunity has provided me with many skills and memories that will benefit my life in the future. Being president is not always fun and easy but it is worth all the time and effort required.

The possibilities provided to the members of the FFA and myself are numerous. None of these opportunities would be possible without the tremendous support from donors and Alumni. There is no one I would like to thank more than the man, Mr. Gundlach. Without Sir I would not have accomplished as much as I have. Without these people this chapter’s FFA experience would be nowhere near what it is.

2020 FFA WEEK NEWSLETTER We hope you enjoy the 2020 FFA Week Newsletter. It contains highlights of our FFA activities from last year during February to this current FFA Week. It is put together by our FFA members and shows not only the past year’s accomplishments, but a lot of our chapter history as well as past honored adults and the history and current status of our local Agriculture and FFA Foundation. We are continuing our exchange program with Grottenhof-hardt, an agricultural school in Graz, Austria and our chapter is working to expand those ties by showing them more about how the FFA works with agriculture programs in the United States. We hosted two students from there in August of 2016 and in June of 2017, two of our members (Maverick Guenther and Ashley Walther) visited Austria.

Our FFA is the second the largest in Wisconsin with nearly 409 members and is well known locally and on the state and national levels.

Thank you to those FFA members involved in the production of the newsletter as well those advertisers who support its publication through their ads. Without that support, this newsletter could not be published.

We would like to give a special thank you to Rita Hookstead and Mailing Expert, LLC for their support and patience as we compiled this newsletter while working around district speaking contests and student award applications.

NEW AGRICULTURE TEACHER FFA ADVISOR

Mr. James Rupp

Mr. James Rupp is the new agriculture teacher and COFFA advisor. He is a veteran agriculture teacher and built a strong program in Albany, Wisconsin. He started on July 1 and has worked with FFA members at our Piggly Wiggly Brat Fry, two fairs, and with the Corn Carnival. He has also taught a four day Tractor Safety Course.

He has also attended an FFA Alumni meeting, a Corn Carnival meeting, a Columbia County Agriculture Teacher meeting, the FIRE Conference, Sectional Leadership Conference, and National FFA Convention.

We look forward to working with him this year in maintaining our chapter’s programs and maybe adding some new activities.

SECOND NEW AGRICULTURE TEACHER FFA ADVISOR

Mrs. Stephanie DeVries Mrs. Stephanie DeVries joined the CambriaFriesland teaching staff this past summer leaving an agriculture teaching position in Plymouth High School to return home to her alma mater as the agriculture teacher and co-advisor of the RCF FFA. Mrs. DeVries has been very active so far, attending the FIRE Conference, Sectional Leadership Conference, and National FFA Convention after a busy summer which included the Columbia County Fair. With an agriculture teacher at CFHS, FFA membership has increased again.

She becomes the co-FFA advisor to an FFA that is the second largest in Wisconsin.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

Lucas Miller, Audrey & Howard Williams The Distinguished Service award is the highest honor we can award a supporter of our FFA. Howard and Audrey have endowed a scholarship which means it will last forever. Howard has also helped establish a wild flower prairie at the Eugene Jenkins Memorial Land Laboratory by mowing and digging holes. He has also removed dead trees and piled them for us. Finally, Howard and Audrey assisted with digging nearly a ton of potatoes which we donated to area food banks. Thank you Howard and Audrey.

FFA BANQUET (continued) Our FFA remains (we think) the only FFA and agriculture department in Wisconsin with its own Foundation.

With cash and property, our foundation total is over $550,000 and growing. Each year we honor donors (new and past donors moving up). This year, we were proud to recognize Ardyth Pickhardt and family for a memorial donation in memory of Jim Pickhardt, along Ardyth, a long time supporter of the FFA and agriculture department.

Our FFA would welcome local sponsors (business or personal) for our proficiencies so we could better recognize members at our FFA Banquet. Local sponsorship would be $20 for one of the forty-five areas and local sponsors would be recognized at the FFA Banquet and by having their names in the banquet program. If you are interested in sponsoring a local proficiency for $20, please contact the agriculture and FFA department at 920-326-2425 (extension 3348).

WHAT IS AN SAE: SAE (Supervised Agriculture Experience) is one I am interested in sponsoring a local proficiency for of the three legs in the agriculture education program. The other two legs _____YES 2020 at a cost of $20.00. Please send your are classroom instruction and FFA. Students can win local, state, and sponsorship to: national recognition based on the development of their SAE and the RCF FFA has fared well in state and national competition over the years. A RCF FFA Proficiency Fund list of the proficiency areas for this year is listed below and shows the Randolph High School diversity of the agriculture program in this area. 2019 STATE FFA CONVENTION RCF FFA 2019 STATE CONVENTION NEWS The RCF FFA had a great State FFA Convention again.

Four members competed for State Stars, nine members received their State FFA Degrees, twenty-five members had gold rated proficiencies with twenty-one state finalists and seven state winners advancing to national proficiency competition, one member will represent Wisconsin in the American FFA Degree Star competition, one member compete as a state finalist in Extemporaneous Speaking, were recognized as a Pride chapter in membership, were rated Silver in National Chapter, and had a 3-Star Chapter President.

Additionally, Seth Cupery and Colten De Jager received Wisconsin FFA Foundation Scholarships. RCF FFA members received nearly $5,000 in SAE awards, $1,500 in scholarships, and will have eight members competing for $11,000 nationally as Wisconsin FFA representatives from our chapter.

The RCF FFA attended the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana October 23-27.

Members attending included Mary Geurts, Mariah DeVries, Aidan Bobholz, Zach Cupery, Jordan Drzonek, Livia Erdmann, Olivia Nieman, Noah Eckert, Jared Bahr, Colton Alsum, Megan Stancer, Joseline Stringfield, Jax Rataczak, Jessica Bahr, Carter Beaulieu, Macy Williams and Levi Alsum. Also attending were advisors Stephanie DeVries and James Rupp as well as a number of our American FFA Degree recipients.

Members attended sessions, toured area sites, attended the Career Show, and saw the final proficiency awards where Levi Alsum was a National Finalist. Levi placed first in the nation and won $1,000.

Adults attending included Gloria Leystra, Duane and Wendi Dykstra, and Aaron Stewart.

The National Convention set a record attendance total again with nearly 70,000 members and guests.

RANDOLPH FFA ALUMNI CONTINUES TO GROW AND SUPPORT AG AND FFA PROGRAMS The Randolph FFA Alumni again increased their support of the Randolph School District agriculture department and the combined Randolph Cambria-Friesland FFA. Areas supported include: $400-FFA Alumni Scholarships $300-Donation towards FFA Banquet $300-Donation towards sending members to the National FFA Convention $100-Donation to the American FFA Degree Fund $250-Donation towards sending fifty-one members to the State FFA Convention $500-Donation for curriculum enrichment for items not included in the school district budget $100-Donation as ads for FFA activities $100-Donation to FFA to offset accounting costs for Form 990's required by the IRS $750-End of the year grant to the FFA if needed To support the previously mentioned FFA activities, the FFA Alumni holds an annual Labor Day Breakfast which has grown larger each year. Special thanks to everyone who attends this fundraiser.

In April of each year, the Alumni assist the FFA with their annual banquet.

Current officers are Seth Braker, president, Mike Biel, vice present, Mike Buss, secretary; and Barb Braker, treasurer.

Dues are reasonable and you need not have been in agriculture classes or the FFA in high school to join. All you need is a desire to support the local agriculture department and FFA. Meetings are held six to seven times per year. All members receive the agendas for each meeting plus financial summaries for all activities the Alumni is involved with and an end of the total financial report used to file form 990 for the IRS. Consider a membership. All are welcome.

Hello--This past March Mr. Gundlach wrote a grant proposal to the National FFA Alumni with a goal of making a bigger more effective FFA Alumni called the Randolph Cambria-Friesland FFA Alumni.

The RCF FFA has expanded greatly and is really too large for one or even two persons to be effective in all areas. Mr. Gundlach worked 85 to 90 hours a week because he viewed some areas as a hobby. Mr. Rupp and Mrs. De Vries are working long hours as they learn the program and community.

A strong FFA Alumni would have the purpose to support and promote FFA activities and agricultural education. It would provide a tie to and assist FFA and agricultural education personnel to involve former members, supporters and volunteers in worthy activities.

FFA Alumni members could train Career Development Event (CDE) teams and take them to contests.

Over twenty years ago, we had CDE teams but they were dropped due to time constraints needed to effectively train a team. Our LDE contestants fare well and we have had state qualifiers and winners.

FFA Alumni members can serve as speakers, provide tours of their farm/business or lend their expertise in any curriculum area where their knowledge would benefit agriculture students/FFA members.

Yes, this is a recruitment letter. We want to make an Alumni that has the membership to assist FFA members while attending state and national FFA Alumni events, perhaps having their own banquet, and maybe have outings for golf or sporting events like Brewer or Packer games. The potential here is great.

You need not have been a former FFA member to join. You only have to want to support Agriculture/FFA.

There will be a meeting Monday, March 16, 2020. It will start at 6:30 pm, last an hour, and further explain what the FFA Alumni can do for our FFA members. YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM The Agriculture Department is a leader in the area of Youth Apprenticeships for students. Students in the Youth Apprenticeship program work in a year at local businesses or farms and receive a credit for their work with a maximum of two credits earned while in high school.

MEMORIAL CIRCLE AT EUGENE JENKINS MEMORIAL LAND LABORATORY

David “Woody” Jenkins passed away on Monday, December 8, 2014. “Woody” mentored many of the FFA members who worked at the garden. His assistance and help in machinery operation and carpentry was invaluable to our FFA and its members. Woody lived at the land lab since Eugene passed away in 2009 and cared for as well as watched over many of the projects being developed by FFA members. He often chaperoned workers if Sir had to leave for awhile and would always monitor the irrigation if needed. There was nothing he would not do for our FFA members. The plaque was the idea of the FFA members who knew and worked with Woody.

REMEMBERING EUGENE

Pictured is the Memorial Circle at the Eugene Jenkins Memorial Land Laboratory. Eugene Jenkins began this in a tribute to his mother and the FFA has continued it with a plaque honoring Eugene and a plaque installed three summers ago in honor and in memory of David “Woody” Jenkins.

REMEMBERING WOODY The RCF FFA finished the memorial to Eugene Jenkins this past fall. It is a fitting tribute to a man whose gift of the land laboratory to our Agriculture & FFA Foundation has served as the focal point for learning in the SAE areas of vegetable production, fruit production, turf grass management, landscaping, diversified horticulture, and environmental science and natural resources management. With the assistance of Randolph Memorials, this plaque was installed near the memorial Eugene put in place to honor and memorialize his parents, Ed and Hilda Jenkins.

TRACTOR CERTIFICATION TO BE TAUGHT IN RANDOLPH

PLANNED GIVING BENEFITS AG & FFA FOUNDATION

Any student of the Randolph or Cambria-Friesland School Districts will have the opportunity to obtain their Tractor Certification for working for area farmers and driving on the highway right here in Randolph.

The RCF FFA, through a grant written by the Ag Leadership class, has secured the funds to be able to offer the Tractor Certification class here. Keith Gundlach, the past Agriculture instructor met with Cheryl Skjolaas, Youth Agricultural Safety Specialist from the University of Wisconsin Center for Agricultural Safety and Health. After reviewing materials for the course with Skjolaas, agriculture instructor, Keith Gundlach, was certified to teach the course for Tractor Certification standards and it is offered each summer. This year James Rupp and Stephanie DeVries will teach the course.

Please keep time open in June for dates the course will be taught. At this time, we are looking at the third week in June for a three day course. Lunch will be provided to the students in the class at no charge. Students outside the Randolph and Cambria-Friesland School Districts may also take the course. Course fees will be $10.00. Students will all receive the state certification once they finish the course and their names are reported. If they are fourteen, they will also receive their federal certificate. If not fourteen, the certificate will be held until they turn fourteen.

From mid-March until the end of May, you may contact James Rupp at 920-326-2425 for more information on the course and register for the summer course.

Looking for a way to make a substantial contribution to the Agriculture and FFA Foundation? Depending upon your age and several other factors, you can have the recognition of being a major donor to the Ag & FFA Foundation or any other Foundation supported by the Randolph School District.

The Randolph Agriculture and FFA Foundation is currently the recipient of three planned giving programs. Two are confidential while the other is sponsored by Keith Gundlach. Twenty-five years ago, Gundlach purchased a $25,000 life insurance policy with the school district foundations named as the beneficiary. Of the total policy value, $20,000 is intended for the Agriculture and FFA Foundation. This plan costs Gundlach $372 per year or about $1.00 per day and is tax deductible. The dividends from the policy go to Gundlach each year. Of course, for the district to collect, Keith Gundlach has to expire which everyone does sooner or later.

A planned giving program is an opportunity for someone to make a substantial contribution to the Agriculture and FFA program or to the Agriculture and FFA Foundation where only generated interest can be used.

If you are interested, there are any number of arrangements that can be made in any amount or for any foundation. A $10,000 policy is much cheaper and still gives the Agriculture and FFA program a substantial gift. Contact Keith Gundlach or your insurance agent for details. Thank you for your consideration.

CURRICULUM CROSSWALK/DUAL CREDIT Horticulture is the first curriculum to be cross walked with the science standards. Once completed and approved by the Department of Instruction, Horticulture will be accepted as a science credit for admission to some colleges.

Both Horticulture and Conservation classes are using the CAERT curriculum which is aligned to the state and national standards for agriculture.

Both classes have in the CAERT curriculum standards which are heavily tied to the state science standards for secondary school instruction. They are also aligned to the common core standards.

In the coming several years, all of the agriculture curriculum will be switched to the CAERT model while adding to the new model areas of the current curriculum which have worked well in specific instructional areas.

With the hiring of Mr. Rupp several agriculture classes are having the curriculum reviewed for dual credit at Black Hawk Technical College in Janesville.

FOOD SCIENCE COURSE A course in Food Science is being prepared for presentation to the School Board’s Curriculum Committee for the 2020-2021 school year. The Agriculture Department is reviewing course outlines from a growing number of schools who are offering this as a part of their Agriculture class offerings.

AGRICULTURE CLASSES AND THE FFA PAY DIVIDENDS Enrollments in agriculture courses are at the highest level of all time. Why? Student interest and the prospect of employment are the reasons. All three agriculture campuses in Wisconsin report a shortage of graduates to fill the demand for jobs. This past fall, nearly twenty school districts were short agriculture teachers when school started and the positions were filled with emergency licenses. People will always need to eat and while some do not understand where the food comes from and others don’t care, the demand for the food will always be there. It is the demand for the experts in this field that make students aware of the opportunities.

The FFA also plays an important part in the student decision to take an agriculture course. It is a program that stresses record keeping and management decisions. It also gives students travel experiences and a chance to interact with other FFA members across Wisconsin and the United States.

Lastly, the agriculture curriculum at Randolph High School is recognized as being up to date and for being developed to fit the needs of the community and students.

Additionally, graduating seniors each year secure nearly $15,000 in local agriculture scholarships, the highest amount around the area and state for locally generated agriculture scholarships. They also have numerous agriculture company scholarships available to them.

So far this year, RCF FFA members have received over $67,000 in SAE awards and SAE Grants.

In short, agriculture courses and the FFA will remain a strong curricular area and demand for the graduates will continue to grow. This, in turn, will attract and maintain enrollment.

AGRICULTURE EDUCATION GOALS FOR THE RANDOLPH AND CAMBRIA-FRIESLAND AGRICULTURE DEPARTMENT -Aspires to excellence while recruiting, preparing, and supporting individuals in agricultural related careers.

-Informs the public about agriculture, its needs, opportunities, and challenges -Provides instruction in and about agriculture.

-Serves all populations.

-Develops the whole person.

-Responds to the needs of the marketplace.

-Advocates free enterprise and entrepreneurship education.

-Functions as a part of the total educational system.

-Utilizes a proven educational process which includes formal instruction, experiential learning, leadership, and personal development.

DEMAND FOR AG GRADUATES HIGH Agriculture graduates, whether they are from universities or technical colleges are headed for promising careers.

If you check the statistics from the colleges of agriculture at UW-Madison, UW-Platteville, and UW-River Falls as well as the technical colleges, you will find placement rates between 90% and 100% for agriculture majors.

Agriculture education majors at all three campuses have a 100% placement rate for those students seeking teaching positions. However, some agriculture education majors go out of state to find employment and this compounds the shortage.

The past few years in Wisconsin have seen an extreme shortage of agriculture teachers and it is getting worse. So far for the 2019-2020 school year there have been enough announced retirements to outpace the number of students graduating and willing to teach.

The anticipated demand for students with agriculture majors remains strong and is expected to exceed demand for some time. As agriculture expands its knowledge and involvement in the areas of global marketing and research, this demand is only going to get stronger.

NATIONAL SAE SUCCESS SAE (Supervised Agriculture Experience) is one of the three legs of the agriculture education program with the other two being classroom instruction and FFA. Students have the chance to develop a SAE project and use the project to learn and compete for awards through SAE programs.

RCF FFA STARS HISTORY The Randolph Cambria-Friesland FFA awards four extremely important awards each year at the annual FFA Awards Banquet. These awards are reflective of the overall quality of a student's SAE (Supervised Ag Experience Program). The awards are not given lightly and are often looked upon as the top awards for individuals at the FFA Banquet other than the State and American FFA Degrees. Listed below are the Star Chapter Farmer Awards and Star Chapter Agribusinessmen Awards since agriculture was reintroduced to the Randolph school system in 1977. These are the only records we could locate but are having the Cambria-Friesland FFA's records searched to update this list. New categories in Star In Agricultural Placement and Star In AgriScience were added on the state and national levels in 2002 and the RCF FFA has followed suit.

RCF FFA PRESIDENTS In keeping our history in mind, we have compiled a list of known FFA Presidents. We have been checking old yearbooks to see if we can update the list for both Randolph and Cambria-Friesland.

Randolph was chartered in 1938 with the Wisconsin FFA Association and Cambria-Friesland was chartered in 1952 with the Wisconsin FFA Association. The Agriculture programs were merged from 1969-1970 to 1976-1977 at CambriaFriesland High School with one FFA. From 1977-1978 to 1986-1987 each school had separate Agriculture programs. In 1987-1988 the Agriculture programs were merged with separate FFA’s and in 19881989, the FFA’s were merged.

The RCF FFA continued assisting with the American Red Cross Blood Drives by helping with set up and take down. We assisted with blood drives in June and August this summer.

CORN CARNIVAL

Jessica Bahr, Sadie Schmid, Megan Stancer All seventeen RCF FFA officers helped the FFA Alumni with their annual Labor Day Breakfast and several assisted Rita Hookstead and the Marsh View Veterinary Clinic with their “RunFor The Cause”. Members also sold scholarship raffle tickets and honey which was harvested in late August.

LEADERSHIP CONFERENCES-WORKSHOPS SECTIONAL LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP

FFA President Collin Weitzien. Jared presented to the agriculture classes about FFA and the numerous opportunities available while Collin added as a second year officer and the State FFA President. Collin also took some time to visit with retired agriculture teacher Keith Gundlach.

RCF FFA MEMBERS ATTEND FFA 212º - 360º CONFERENCES

On stage photo-op with Section VI State Officer Jared Mack Twenty RCF FFA officers and members attended the Sectional Leadership Workshop at Sauk Prairie High School in September.

The Wisconsin FFA Sectional Leadership Workshop is designed to prepare local FFA chapter officers and members both in high school and middle school for leadership roles in their school district for the upcoming year. It also informs each chapter of the new programs available to all FFA members and allows the officers to exchange ideas with other FFA chapters in their area. The 2019-2020 State FFA Officer Team planned and conducted this workshop to encourage the participants to develop their leadership potential, to challenge them to set personal and chapter goals for the year and to motivate the students to take advantage of the many opportunities available to them through the FFA. The 2019 theme was “Start Your Engines”. Members left ready to promote FFA, agricultural education and agriculture in their schools and communities. FFA advisors also participated in a workshop that helped inform them about FFA opportunities for the school year.

At 211° water is extremely hot, but just one more degree gets us to the next level. These conferences focus on student development. Students will be challenged to push the limits. Themes for this conference include: Virtues and Growth.

The 360º Conference is a two-day personal development seminar designed for high school juniors and seniors involved in the FFA organization. 360° - takes students full circle in terms of chapter leadership. The 360° Conference is focused on the importance of influence and how to become an influential leader. Students spent their time in sessions understanding the importance of influence, conducting a chapter needs assessment, crafting an influence plan for their local FFA chapter and developing a strategy to make an influence.

The conferences were held at the Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin November 15-16, 2019.

FIRE stands for “Foundations in Reaching Excellence.” The conference helps young FFA members discover opportunities in the FFA organization and gain valuable leadership skills.

This is one of three conferences held around the state of Wisconsin for seventh, eighth and ninth grade FFA members.

Over 600 members attended these three conferences during October.

The Wisconsin FFA FIRE Conference is designed to inform beginning FFA members about the FFA and motivate them to participate in its many activities. Students learned about communication skills, social skills, goal setting, FFA awards and programs, and opportunities in agriculture along with developing leadership skills to help them be effective members in their local chapters. The conference is conducted by the 2019-2020 State FFA Officer Team along with assistance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Collegiate FFA members.

This conference was centered around the theme “FFAmily Vacation”. All of the state officers encouraged students that attended the FIRE Conference to set goals for their FFA involvement and meet people from around the state who can help them reach those goals. This is the start in a member’s journey in the FFA Organization as they travel through the many opportunities offered to students through Agricultural Education and FFA.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT EVENTS The RCF FFA participated in the District Leadership Development Events at Oakfield High School on February 10, 2020. Representing our FFA in the Quiz Bowl for Middle School students were Ashton Brusveen, Sam Ramirez, and Kyra Schoemann.

They did well in their first competition and will compete again as eighth graders next year.

Carter Beaulieu – Karen Lee Karen Lee, George Stelter’s niece, recently presented a check for $20,000 to RCF FFA President Carter Beaulieu which has been added to the FFA account in the United Cooperative. It is part of the Agriculture & FFA Foundation which means only the interest it generates will ever be used.

The interest it generates will fund a perpetual scholarship in honor and memory of George Stelter, long time Randolph School District employee. George’s most rewarding job was being a janitor at the Randolph High School for 15 years. He cherished all of the friends he made with faculty, staff and students over the years. He was a big fan of the Randolph athletic teams and attended many games until his health no longer allowed it. He was also a big supporter of the RCF FFA and never missed an FFA Banquet. George spent many hours visiting with FFA members and their advisor and was an FFA Honorary Chapter member as well as a Distinguished Service recipient of the RCF FFA. It is fitting George’s bequest both honors him with a named scholarship and helps the FFA. Beyond the scholarship it generates, the interest will also help fund activities of the FFA as well as supply the agriculture department with some extras not in the budget.

The RCF FFA was selected as a recipient of a $1500 Walmart Community Grant this past October for its work with four area food banks. The grant will assist in the expansion of the program which donated over 2,700 pounds of fresh produce this past year.

COMMUNITY CORN CARNIVAL DONATION

The Randolph Corn Carnival recently awarded $5000 to community organizations from proceeds from the Randolph Corn Carnival held on Labor Day. FFA members assist the group by putting up and taking down the signs, hauling materials to and from the park before and after the carnival, setting up the park by moving picnic tables and setting up trash barrels, setting up stands for area groups, and doing park clean up after the carnival. The Corn Carnival Committee awarded the RCF FFA $2000 for their efforts and we would like to thank them for their support.

FARM BUREAU ANNUAL MEETING AND DONATION

The donation was from their Car Show held on Labor Day in conjunction with the Randolph Community Corn Carnival. The 3 C’s Car Show has supported the RCF FFA with generous donations for a number of years.

The money is used by the FFA in helping to implement its programs in support of the Randolph and Cambria-Friesland area communities.

This year the event raised more than $2,500 for Local FFA Chapters. In mid-November, Heidi Alsum Dykstra and Wendy Alsum presented the RCF FFA with a check for $1400 to be used in our Program of Activities. Our FFA has ordered our fruit from Alsum Farms & Produce since 1980

As you view these pages, I want you to know the effect these have on our FFA and its Program Of Activities is tremendous. Without the grants, the Land Lab and our Food Bank Project would collapse. As FFA President, I have learned a great deal about grant writing and completed one for $275 myself after the paperwork and an interview. Grants do not cover land lab expenses each year and some of the donations go to support this project.

Grants and donations have exceeded $13,000 this year but I want to stress we have over 400 members when our Middle School students are included and so we have more expenses.

Without this support, our FFA would not be what it is today. Thank you!!!

DONATIONS-GRANTS ALLIANT ENERGY GRANT

The BDCH Foundation has been an annual suppporter for the past several years and their support has made a difference in this program and contributed tO its annual expansion.

WHOLE KIDS FOUNDATION BEE GRANT

RCF FFA President Carter Beaulieu and Alliant Energy representative Waunell Trepanier-Friese The RCF FFA received a grant from Alliant Energy for $1,200 this past November with the amount designated for our Land Laboratory Food Bank Project. The grant will go toward expansion of the land laboratory so more produce can b e grown and donated to four area food banks within fifteen miles of Randolph. Alliant Energy, through its foundation, has supported this project several times over the last six years.

BDCH FOUNDATION GRANT

Carter Beaulieu The RCF FFA was announced as the winner of a $1500 Whole Kids Foundation Bee Grant from Texas this past December. The grant is to be used for maintenance and expansion of our twelve hive apiary at the land laboratory. We remain as the Wisconsin’s “BEE” FFA and have had nine students involved in raising bees and processing honey over the last several years. The bee SAE’s began when Mitchell Miller and Austin Syvertson won National SAE Grants of $1,000 each for raising bees.

AET GRANT

Zach Cupery and Carter Beaulieu accept congratulations from Beaver Dam Community Hospital Foundation Board members The BDCH Foundation again presented the RCF FFA with a $250 grant for our Eugene Jenkins Memorial Land Laboratory Food Bank project. FFA members raised and donated over 3,500 pounds of fresh produce for four area Food Banks. A wet fall hindered the harvest somewhat but we will expand again this year.

AG & FFA ENROLLMENT REPORT The RHS agriculture department and FFA remains one of the largest in Wisconsin. The FFA has been the largest in Wisconsin for fourteen of the past eighteen years. Membership this year is 409 individuals which includes some members out of school, but actively seeking FFA awards above the chapter level.

Daily attendance in agriculture classes this year is 132 students with the middle school exploratory courses included. Over 210 students are seen each year. Registration numbers for 2019-2020 aren’t available yet.

Middle School agriculture students are now taking agriculture classes at both Randolph and Cambria-Friesland schools with the addition of a second teacher at CFHS. Middle School FFA members can start some FFA activities which will make their State FFA Degree applications stronger when they are seniors. Some examples of junior high participation include Quiz Bowl and Creed contests. We are glad all Cambria-Friesland Middle School students now have the opportunity to take Agriculture classes as they can now build their SAE’s and resumes a year earlier like the Randolph students do.

At the time agriculture was reintroduced into the curriculum at Randolph High School in 1977, twenty-three students were in agriculture classes. Enrollment has grown to current levels due to tremendous community and school board support. The curriculum has also changed, becoming more science, math, and business oriented while stressing career opportunities available to agriculture students. With over twenty percent of all jobs in the United States directly linked to agriculture, career choices in agriculture are very promising.

AGRICULTURE CURRICULUM The RHS agriculture curriculum is undergoing its 12th revision since 1977. Added four years ago were courses from the CAERT curriculum which are aligned with state and federal standards for mathematics, science, and financial literacy.

Students may access the CAERT curriculum anywhere they have access to a computer as the curriculum is internet based. The CAERT curriculum in Agriculture Business Management is also aligned to the state financial literacy standards.

Also underway is the drafting of new course outlines which will be submitted to various universities for acceptance as academic credit for admission purposes and to two state colleges for dual credit. At any time, the RHS agriculture department can download the entire agriculture programs of any state connected with Internet services. The downloading of these curriculums allows them to be compared with the local curriculum and with word processing, additions to or deletions from given units occur at the touch of a button. The use of CAERT is also allowing instant alignment to the common core standards.

The 1997-1998 school year saw the addition of a course in Small Animal Care and Management/Veterinary Technology.

This course will give RHS and CFHS students credits in the LAT (laboratory animal technician) program at MATC once articulation is complete. The completed building addition provides the hands on part of this course to ensure its value to post-secondary institutions.

The 1998-1999 school year saw the addition of an Agriculture Mechanics course. It is now offered as both a Technology Education course and an Agriculture course and taught by Mr. Drews in the Technology Education department.

Students in this course are learning the basics in tool maintenance as well as welding, hydraulics, and electricity. A

new course in biotechnology was approved by the board several years ago, but hasn’t been taught yet due to lack of instructor time. This course has a high science and biology content and will consist of a lot of laboratory work involving genetics and DNA in the areas of plants and animals. A leadership course was first offered for the 2001-2002 school year. It deals with professional resumes, scholarship applications, award applications, grant writing for the district in curricular and other areas, taxes and finances, and numerous other activities related to developing leadership qualities. It is a popular course limited to seniors and has had two sections some years.

The Randolph Agriculture Curriculum has served as a model for several school districts and is constantly being upgraded. Colleges and technical schools cannot meet the demand for agriculture graduates now and a sound curriculum gives our students a great start in their post-secondary education in this area. The past few years and continuing this year and into the future, the Agriculture curriculum has evolved even further.

As the governor and legislature move toward a state mandate for three years of science and three years of mathematics required to graduate from high school, the Wisconsin Association of Agriculture Educators (WAAE) has seized the initiative and began the process for obtaining state department of public instruction approval for agriculture courses to be approved as science credit. WAAE has moved toward science based curriculum by working with CAERT. CAERT is a web-based curriculum that has been adopted by over forty-five states and is advancing curriculum in ways not yet conceived by some people in education. The curriculum at Randolph High School has adopted five of the nine new curriculum models and will have all nine adopted with some modifications in the near future. Two classes, Horticulture and Conservation, are currently being taught from the CAERT curriculum using the Internet. Not only does the CAERT curriculum meet strict science guidelines, the Agribusiness CAERT curriculum also meets all the state of Wisconsin guidelines for financial literacy. Progress in this area is moving at an incredible speed at this time. Horticulture has been crosswalked for science credit and Conservation is being crosswalked. Once approved locally, they will be submitted for state approval and then will be accepted for admission to state colleges as a science credit.

Next year will see the agriculture department offering dual credit courses with Blackhawk Technical College in Janesville.

The Randolph School Board Curriculum Committee reviews the agriculture curriculum on a three year rotating cycle and the committee as well as the school board must receive some credit for allowing and encouraging curriculum growth.

INFOVETS & AET These Internet based tools are now also part of the curriculum and award application tools. These tools assist the Agriculture curriculum and our students in keeping abreast of new technologies and award application software.

LOCAL AG/FFA SCHOLARSHIPS Students in the agriculture department and Randolph CambriaFriesland FFA are fortunate to have a large number of scholarships to assist them with their post-secondary education. What began as one $400 scholarship is now 20 scholarships worth nearly $10,000.. Many require the State FFA Degree or prefer it when selecting the recipient. FFA Leadership Scholarship-$250 This scholarship is sponsored by the FFA in recognition of outstanding leadership and commitment to the programs of the RCF FFA. There are no restrictions although officers by virtue of their positions have the best opportunity for this scholarship. * Randolph FFA Alumni Scholarships-$400 This scholarship is sponsored by the Randolph FFA Alumni and is restricted to FFA members having a minimum of three years of agriculture classes. Preference is given to students pursuing an agricultural major and those having been in agriculture classes four years or having taken four or more agriculture classes. One major $400 scholarship is awarded plus additional $200 scholarships if deemed as needed. *

John Ebert Memorial Scholarship-$400 This scholarship is awarded in memory of John Ebert. John was an FFA member and a charter member of the Randolph FFA Alumni. Students who plan to pursue a degree in Animal Science shall be given preference, but the scholarship may be awarded to students in closely related areas. It is a tribute to the late Edward G. Buss, Jr. who was a charter FFA Alumni member, served as an officer, and provided assistance at many activities. Three years of agriculture are required and the recipient must major in agriculture or a related field. The recipient must have a B average and preference is given to a student who might not otherwise receive a scholarship. *

The RCF FFA was named the State winner in the “2019 Standing Up for Rural Wisconsin School, Libraries, and Communities Award” based on their use of the Agriculture and FFA Foundation’s Land Laboratory to teach, develop an FFA apiary, and grow/donate fresh produce to four area food banks. Programs that promote collaboration within schools, libraries, and communities and demonstrated the great potential and collaborative spirit of rural Wisconsin were considered for the award. The award was presented at the Wisconsin Rural Schools Alliance (WiRSA) Conference. FFA members Wes Drews and Owen Gould represented our

chapter and were accompanied by Andy Kohn-Randolph Middle School/High School Principal, and Ty BreitlowRandolph District Administrator.

THE BEES ARE BUZZING!!!!!

What began with Mitchell Miller and Austin Syvertson winning National SAE Grants for beginning a Bee SAE has expanded to where eight students are involved in all areas of raising bees and harvesting the honey.

This past year the FFA had 12 hives enclosed in an electric fenced area surrounded by bear mats. This spring will see us expand to 14 and possibly 18 hives. Production last year was 240 bottles.

Students involved are Aidan Bobholz, Zach Cupery, Nolan Drews, Owen Gould, Wesley Drews, Wesley Medema, Ben Nieman., and Jax Rataczak.

AMERICAN FFA DEGREE FUND CONTINUES TO ASSIST AMERICAN FFA DEGREE WINNERS Over fifty individuals and companies contributed over $3000 to the American FFA Degree Fund in 2016 for the 2014 American FFA Degree recipients. This fund was established to assist American FFA Degree winners in attending the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis. With the current size of the agriculture department, it is difficult for the FFA to offer financial assistance to American FFA Degree winners and still carry on our yearly program of work The American FFA Degree is the culmination of an FFA member's FFA career. It represents the highest honor an FFA member can achieve and it seems inappropriate a recipient should have to pay the entire cost of transportation, lodging, and meals for two days in Indianapolis to receive this degree.

The Randolph Cambria-Friesland FFA would like to publicly thank the donors who have assisted with this idea. Donors who contribute $20.00 or more each year will receive a pair of complimentary tickets to the FFA banquet in April. Deer Hunting Joseph Pulver and Carter Smits were not having any luck hunting deer so they asked for advice from the old expert, Keith Gundlach. "You can just about guarantee a deer if you learn to hunt with dogs," Gundlach said.

Joseph and Carter got a trained deer dog and hit the woods. At the end of the day and still empty-handed, Joseph said to Carter, "Maybe tomorrow we'll get one if we throw the dog out of a higher tree stand."

Bear Hunting In the middle of a forest, Jessica Bahr was suddenly confronted by a huge, mean bear. In her fear, all attempts to shoot the bear were unsuccessful.

Finally, she turned and ran as fast as she could. She ran and ran and ran, until she ended up at the edge of a very steep cliff. Her hopes were dim.

Seeing no way out of her predicament, and with the bear closing in rather quickly, she got down on her knees, opened her arms, and exclaimed, "Dear Lord! Please give this bear some religion!" The skies darkened and there was lightning in the air. Just

around, somewhat confused.

Suddenly, the bear looked up into the sky and said, "Thank you, Lord, for the food I'm about to receive..."

Duck Hunting?

A policeman in the big city stops Zach Cupery in a car with a duck in the front seat. "What are you doing with that duck?" He exclaimed, "You should take it to the zoo." The following week, the same policeman sees Zach Cupery with the duck again in the front seat, with both of them wearing sunglasses. The policeman pulls him over. "I thought you were going to take that duck to the zoo!"

Zach replied, "I did. We had such a good time we are going to the beach this weekend!"

Hunting Wisdom Aidan was asked if he could bring three items to a desert island, what would they be? He said would bring a trapping guide, a water purifier, and a car door.

With the trapping guide I could lay snares so I wouldn't go hungry, with the purifier I could have a source of clean water so I wouldn't get thirsty, and with the car door I could roll the window down so I wouldn't get hot.

Hunting Rescue Jax (Packer fan) and Bryce (new Bear fan who is proud to wear his Bear shirt in public) were hunting and got lost.

Bryce told Jax they should separate to improve their chance of rescue and that if all seemed hopeless and he was more lost, to shoot 3 times in the air and see if anyone shoots back. Jax shot 3 times in the air, but there was no answer. Two hours later Jax shoots 3 more times with no answer again. In 2 more hours Jax gets a text from Bryce who was found and Bryce tells him to shoot again two times so they can find him. Jax says ok but I only have 1 more arrow left.

His curiosity roused, he asked, "Colton, how'd that pig get him a wooden leg?" "Well, Owen, that's a mighty special wild boar who is the family pet! A while back a wild bear attacked me while I was walking in the woods. That pig there came a runnin', went after that bear and chased him away. Saved my life!"

"And the boar tore up his leg?" Owen asked. "No he was fine after that. But a bit later we had that fire. Started in the shed up against the barn. Well, that ole pig started squealin' like he was stuck, woke us up, and before we got out here, the darn thing had herded the other animals out of the barn and saved 'em all!" "So that's when he hurt his leg, huh, Colton?" "No, Owen. He was a might winded, though. When my tractor hit a rock and rolled down the hill into the pond I was knocked clean out. When I came to, that pig had dove into the pond and dragged me out before I drowned. Sure did save my life." "And that was when he hurt his leg?"asked Owen. "Oh no, he was fine. Cleaned him up, too."

"OK, Colton. So just please tell me.

How did he get the wooden leg?"

"Well", the Colton tells him, "A pig so special like that, you don't want to eat him all at once!"

FOOD FOR AMERICA VISITS The RCF FFA again hosted all pre-K through fourth graders plus the Rascals and Rockers Day Care for a tour of the greenhouse and animal lab to teach the young future FFA members about plants and animals as well as where food comes from and how it gets to the table.

AGRICULTURE INSTRUCTOR HISTORY-RHS & CFHS Success for any Agriculture and FFA program is directly proportional to the longevity of the instructor or the ability of a new instructor to manage the good programs in place while incorporating his/her strengths into the program.

In Randolph and Cambria-Friesland, I have been fortunate to work with school boards committed to the success of an Agriculture program with an active FFA. Many of the activities and achievements over the years would not have been possible without the level of support from not only both school boards but also the communities of Cambria, Friesland, and Randolph.

The program here is state and nationally known for its successes in the FFA Program of Activities as well as the success of our students in SAE recognition. These successes have a tendency to increase the interest in our students for competing in events above the chapter level. In short, success has a tendency to breed success.

FFA ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCES RECORD STUDENT MEMBERSHIP OF MORE THAN 700,000 The National FFA Organization is answering the need for more highly skilled graduates to fill job openings in the field of agriculture, and nowhere is this more evident than in the organization’s growing membership.

-The organization announced a record-high student membership of 700,170 in 2018.

-The top six student membership states are Texas, California, Georgia, Oklahoma, Ohio and Missouri.

-Interest in the FFA and agricultural education continues to grow as membership continues to increase.

-This year, the organization has more than 100,000 Latino members, 45 percent of the membership is female with 52 percent of the membership being male. Females hold more than 50 percent of the leadership positions.

-FFA chapters can be found in 24 of the 25 largest U.S. cities.

The National FFA Organization provides leadership, personal growth and career success training through agricultural education to more than 700,000 student members who belong to one of the more than 8,600 local FFA chapters throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Carter Beaulieu Carter Beaulieu has been named one of five state level nominees for the National U.S. Presidential Scholars Program in Career and Technical Education.

Carter received an invitation to apply in January, completed the application in February, and is waiting for an announcement in May of this year.

Carter becomes the first CTE student from here to be accepted to apply for this scholarship worth $9,000 per year ($36,000 over four years of undergraduate study)..

Animal Science makes colored chicks each spring after learning the hatching process and egg parts in class. Eggs in the incubator are candled to find the fertile ones. Students follow the handout with written and visual instructions and are really quite successful if they make sure the eggs are not out of the incubator more than twenty minutes and they inject the egg in the right place.
