Randolph Cambria- Friesland Chapter President's Address
National FFA Week
As we approach National FFA Week, I am very satisfied with what we have accomplished and I am looking forward to what we will do in these next few months. I can't believe that it's already FFA week, before we know it we will be holding elections for next year's officers. I hope that we reached many students this year and that we will continue to grow our chapter numbers as the years go on.
Some of our biggest accomplishments this year have included conventions, conferences, community service, and contests. As you look through this year's newsletter, you'll be able to see a small fraction of what we have accomplished this year. To start the summer we traveled to the State Convention where numerous members received awards and ended the summer by helping with the annual Corn Carnival at the Randolph park. We started some new events such as Scare Away Hunger in the fall and making tie blankets for the Nursing Home residents around Valentine's Day. We had nine people go to the LDE contest in Waupun and we have four of them moving on to the Sectional Competition!
We have many goals for the months ahead, and we are constantly looking for new ideas. Some of the things that we plan to participate in the following months include Career Development Events, the annual FFA banquet, and preparing for next year. We are also looking forward to completing numerous proficiency applications for our SAE's as well as planning new events for the members and officer team.
I have had the privilege of working with an incredible group of students who are always looking for another way to help others and give back. Each of these members contributed immensely in their own way throughout the year and I know that they will do great things in the future. I have been blessed with a family who supports me in everything that I do and it has developed me into a better leader throughout my FFA career. As a freshman, I participated in a few FFA events and I was in Ag Survey which gave me a small glimpse of what the future would hold in FFA. As a sophomore, I took Plant and Soil Science and joined the officer team as the Community Service Vice President- this really showed me the amount of responsibility that FFA holds. Junior year, I took Farm and Business Management as well as earning the position of Student Advisor on our officer team which helped me realize that I would like to further my education in agriculture after high school. Finally, senior year I took Food Processing and Production and I am currently taking Ag Leadership and I was elected the Chapter President which has taught me a lot about leadership and helping others.
I have learned a lot this year, not only about FFA but about agriculture and the people who are involved in it as well. To me, FFA is people coming together to use their strengths to help others and further their knowledge. FFA has really opened my eyes to the broadness of agriculture and the amount of opportunities available. Throughout all of the adversity we have faced we have been able to learn from each person and resource made available to us. For me specifically, Keith Gundlach has been someone who has been constant through the adversity throughout my FFA career. He has been an incredible example of what FFA means to this community and everyone he interacts with. Many people in the Randolph Cambria Friesland FFA chapter and alumni agree that Mr. Gundlach has made a huge impact.
As a Chapter, we are always looking to improve. Please email Haley Williams at williamsh@students.rsdwi.org or Lauren Freel at freell@rsdwi.org to provide feedback with comments or suggestions, please include ideas for specific articles you would enjoy reading in the upcoming 2024 FFA Week Newsletter.

MESSAGE
BY: MRS LAUREN FREEL
It is hard to believe that a whole year has gone by since our last FFA Week Newsletter! I am extremely proud of the successes of our FFA chapter throughout this past year. The hard work and dedication that our students show day in and day out never fail to astound me. I truly mean it when I say that the RCF FFA has the BEST students!
Some of our highlights from this year include, conferences and conventions, volunteer work and leadership building at the local, state and national level Our summer 2022 started out strong with the Wisconsin State FFA Convention (read more on pages 19-22) where several members attended and received state awards Following convention, myself along with 10 students hopped on a plane (yes - I may have been crazy to bring 10 students across the country!) to Washington D C to attend the Washington D C Leadership Conference This is a conference held by the National FFA and includes tours of our nation's capital, along with immersive leadership development sessions and the opportunity to meet FFA members from around the country We also had numerous other FFA activities over the summer, which you can read about on pages 12-18
As the school year began in September, our FFA officer team and members jumped right into all of the activities that make our chapter so great The fall was filled with community service, state conferences, fundraisers and of course National Convention! We also were able to host our first ever FFA corn maze (which you can read about on page 38), thanks to our incredible FFA Alumni We enjoyed some more activities over these past few winter months and are now looking forward to spring competition season (along with the warm weather that comes with it!)
National FFA Week is always an exciting time of year, and provides the opportunity to showcase the amazing things that our students accomplish all throughout the year I encourage you to read through this newsletter that highlights our member's achievements, and if you see one of them in person make sure to tell them congratulations and to keep up the good work The skills that are learned in FFA are carried with these students throughout their lives and it all begins here
THANK YOU for taking the time to read our annual FFA Week Newsletter, and we thank everyone in our communities for their constant support of the Randolph Cambria-Friesland FFA!

Turf Grass Management Placement/Entrepreneurship
My SAE involves my employment at D & D Lawn Service, LLC and my small lawn mowing business called Colton's Cuts. I load trucks, do edging, lawn trimming, and use the push mower. I also assist with landscaping as needed and can spread fertilizer For Colton's Cuts, I began with two customers in year one and now have three with six expected next year
Grain Production Entrepreneurship
My supervised agricultural experience involves my acreage planted for corn and soybeans. I started with ten acres of each and continued to expand throughout high school. I have learned a great deal about crop scouting corn and bean fields and learning to identify weeds and how they can be treated I started with 10 acres and expanded to 60 acres last year

THE TIME IS NOW
to advocate, participate, and innovate agriculture in our towns, community, and world Relaying the positive impact of the agricultural industry is vital to helping the next generation understand the importance of ag in their day to day lives. “I believe in the future of agriculture, with a faith born not of words but of deeds” are the compelling words of the beginning of the FFA Creed by E M Tiffany Though written over 94 years ago, these words are also a part of me, as I too am the future of innovating agriculture and it is my responsibility to increase ag awareness
Agriculture has a story to tell. Farmers who feed the world, technology innovation, and renewable and/or biodegradable agricultural products are just a few examples of positive differences ag production has on our world. Agriculturists are being proactive rather than reactive and putting their words into actions to stay ahead of the evolving technology and systems Agriculture has, is, and will continue to make a positive difference in feeding the growing world population through innovating ideas like research in genetics, precision agriculture, and land use
FFA members can share agriculture’s story and present the facts on social media to help advocate its importance FFA provides opportunities to be involved in agriculture Ben Styer, Wisconsin FFA Officer Team President states, the time is now to take advantage of every opportunity ” and with FFA, the opportunities are endless
FFA members can utilize their time in beneficial and practical ways by putting ideas into action through Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAEs) and their chapter’s Program of Activities (POAs) By advocating FFA and agriculture in the classroom, the next generation will know the importance of ag in their everyday lives

FFA members can share agriculture’s story and present the facts on social media to help advocate its importance
Continued from page 19...
Agriculture has produced innovative ideas such as the plow, cotton gin, seed genetics, and ethanol which have played a part in the advancement of agriculture FFA members have the chance to create new technology for the future The FFA Creed s first paragraph states that through progress there will be “ the promise of better days through better ways ” meaning that the advancements made now will have great rewards and benefits in the future
Additionally, working smarter and not harder will serve as an example to youth to engage in agriculture as a career, and teach them the importance of innovation
The final line of the FFA Creed reflects on how each individual is responsible for more than just themselves “I believe that American agriculture can and will hold true to the best traditions of our national life and that I can exert an influence in my home and community which will stand solid for my part in the inspiring task ” The time is now to be a supporter and innovator of agriculture I am the future of agriculture and it is my job to communicate and advocate agriculture’s past struggles, present ideas, and future benefits to my community my state and my world

“IBELIEVE
in the future of agriculture, with a faith born not of words, but of deeds” are the compelling words of the beginning of the FFA Creed by E.M. Tiffany. Though written over 94 years ago, these words are also a part of me, as I too am the future of agriculture
Communicating the positive impact of the agricultural industry is vital to help the next generation understand the importance of ag in their day to day lives Three areas to highlight on the positive difference agriculture has made are feeding the world, technology innovation, and renewable and/or biodegradable agricultural products Those in agriculture are not just about talking, but taking the actions to stay ahead of research in genetics, precision agriculture, and land use
Agriculturists are being proactive rather than reactive and putting their
words into making a positive difference now, and in the future.
Agricultural production feeds the world and is a billion dollar industry According to Mongabay.com, the world population is 7 9 billion and it is expected to grow to 9 2 billion by 2050 How is there going to be enough meals for everyone on earth? Norman Borlaug, a 1940’s American agriculture scientist, is a perfect example of “...achievements won by the present and past generations of agriculturalists…” from the FFA Creed
Borlaug was faced with the same problem, as farmers in India and Pakistan were raising half the wheat necessary to provide food for the growing population. With seed genetic science, Borlaug was able to create disease resistant strains that could withstand the harsh environment. Borlaug’s dwarf wheat was responsible for a sixty percent increase in harvest rates His advancements in innovation proved that working efficiently can have a direct impact and change lives
Throughout history, agriculture has continued to make beneficial differences while being innovative and efficient when there were obstacles that they had to maneuver Ideas such as the plow, cotton gin, seed genetics, and ethanol have all played a part in the advancement of agriculture.
The industry is always looking at ways to advance technology
The FFA Creed’s first paragraph states that through progress there will be “ the promise of better days through better ways… ” meaning that the advancements made now will have great rewards and benefits in the future
Additionally, working smarter and not harder will serve as an example to youth to engage in agriculture as a career This will help reduce the increasing age of active farmers, which now averages just over sixty years old in many areas of Wisconsin based on several stories from Agri-View com

A current day, relevant innovation is ethanol, which is an organic chemical compound that is used in solvent, germicide, antifreeze, alcoholic drinks, fuel and more Since ethanol is made out of corn it is a renewable resource. Using ethanol compared to other nonrenewable resources like fossil fuels, methanol, and butanol, ethanol has many positives on the environment and to all engine users. Other benefits include reduced demands of foreign oil and fossil fuels, low emissions, high octane, and reduced pollution Ethanol is a key factor in products like fuels because it is cost effective compared to other biofuels.
Advancements in agricultural technology change the planet in immense ways By having excellent innovation, efficiency in production, food items can be produced cheaper, easier, and faster Worldwide, everyone benefits from these factors
Utilizing crops such as corn and soybean instead of plastic and other products that have caused problems in our environment since the late 1960’s is another example of innovations stemming from agriculture. This issue of pollution is caused by the materials used in the plastic that are not compostable. Recently scientists are making a special type of material called polylactic acid (PLA) plastic that is made of specially processed crops Known as corn plastic, it can be used for a variety of cups, garbage bags, bottles, food packaging, utensils and more
Using renewable crop source materials can reduce the dependency on petroleum which is used in most plastic products The corn plastic does not cause the same environmental issues that most plastics do, making it one of the best solutions available
Using products that are made of biodegradable plant plastics is very beneficial to the environment and can change major pollution problems
Ingexchange.com stated, “By using plastics sourced from plants we can decrease the harmful effects on our environment to create a bright healthy future ” Changing a few of our every day tasks are simple ways to make a large difference

Agriculture has, is, and will continue to make a positive difference in feeding the population, innovating ideas, and producing biodegradable products The final line of the FFA Creed reflects on how each individual is responsible for more than just themselves “I believe that American agriculture can and will hold true to the best traditions of our national life and that I can exert an influence in my home and community which will stand solid for my part in the inspiring task ” I am the future of agriculture and it is my job to communicate the struggles of the past, the ideas of the present, and the benefits of the future to my community, my state, and my world

“FFA HAS TAUGHT ME MANY LESSONS THAT I STILL USE TODAY. TEAMWORK, LEADERSHIP, AND DISCIPLINE ARE ALL NEEDED TO BE A SUCCESSFUL PROFESSIONAL, AND ALL THESE SKILLS ARE REFINED THROUGH PROGRAMS AND ORGANIZATIONS LIKE FFA. WE HAVE BEEN SO FORTUNATE TO HAVE HAD A COOPERATIVE FFA WITH CAMBRIA-FRIESLAND FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS. I WAS A VICE PRESIDENT, WHILE I WAS A CAMBRIA STUDENT, OF OUR CHAPTER IN 1997, AND I MET SO MANY PEOPLE FROM RANDOLPH THAT I STILL CALL FRIENDS TODAY. NOW IT HAS COME FULL CIRCLE, AS I AM THE DISTRICT ADMINISTRATOR FOR THE RANDOLPH SCHOOL DISTRICT. WHEN YOU CREATE BONDS AND FRIENDSHIPS THROUGH ORGANIZATIONS LIKE FFA, YOU REALIZE THE VALUE IN LIFE ISN'T ALWAYS WHAT YOU KNOW, BUT WHO YOU KNOW. THE REAL VALUE IS CONNECTING WITH PEOPLE WHILE MAKING THE ORGANIZATION BETTER FOR ALL STAKEHOLDERS. WHEN THIS HAPPENS WE ALL WIN AND END UP WITH A GREAT PROGRAM AND LONG-LASTING FRIENDSHIPS. THISschool year, In preparation for the corn maze The RCF FFA put in a lot of hard work and dedication into cutting, decorating and working towards our end goal, letting the people in our area
enjoy one piece of our organization
One member, Payton Welch, helped Mrs Freel come up with a design for the corn maze and with the help of Kurt Williams and the rest of the Jungs team the corn maze was planted and came to life Throughout this summer the RCF FFA was able to reach out to community members and students and put in hard work and dedication into bringing this project to life while bringing enjoyment for our community FFA officers, Kate Bobholz and Ashtyn Wiersma set out a task to ensure the clearing and safety of the corn maze ensuring that everyone who walked through would enter and stay safe
Approaching the football season they set up signs to help people get through These signs entailed agricultural facts and facts about our chapter A great thanks to Karl Bobholz for donating all the decorations for the inside of the corn maze and putting in his own time to help prepare the corn maze
We proudly opened up the corn maze on September 2nd During the week, our corn maze opened on Friday nights when Randolph High school had a home football game We opened our arms to our community and welcomed many adults and kids to enjoy our corn maze
Our chapter then decided to end the year with a haunted corn maze With this, we had a second outreach to any members of our chapter to help scare and guide others through the maze In total, we were able to get 15 members to run our corn maze and provide a good time to our community members We were able to have a successful night in having over 200 people attend within our hours and also sold many different products, including eggs, maple syrup and canned goods all from various FFA Members A great thanks to everyone who helped with a very successful first corn maze

WORKING THROUGH SCHOOL
By: Gwen Hahn
MMany residents of the Cambria/Randolph area have seen a friendly face on the cover of the RCF FFA seasonal updates, with a title above,
written “President Update ” Also, Haley Williams may also be seen at the Horicon Bank in Randolph, working at Jung’s Seed Company and Nursery, Alsum’s Sweet Corn produce stands in the summer, or attending every event held by the Randolph Cambria Friesland FFA Chapter It is clear Haley Williams has been and continues to be dedicated to FFA.
Haley’s FFA career began in middle school, when she applied for her first SAE grant She specialized in Ag Sales and Ag Processing due to her work at Alsum’s Sweet Corn and Jung’s Seed Company Through the development of these two SAE’s, Haley is an asset to any employer as she credits her communication and hard work ethic to the development of her SAE/Proficiency through her early start with the advice and encouragement of Mr. Keith “Sir” Gundlach
He mentions, “I recognized Haley's potential in eighth grade when she completed a writing assignment which showed her skills.
I then watched her bring her laptop to my office as a sophomore and work on her first proficiency where I only answered a few questions Now she is President and a Star candidate. She will achieve much more in the FFA.”
Not only has Haley been backed by the original Keith “Sir” Gundlach, Haley notices how much Sir does for the community and how he has built the Randolph Cambria-Friesland FFA program through the years. Haley notes, “I walked into Mr. Gundlach's room as a sophomore and was more scared than anyone can imagine As I spent at least an hour with him every day, I began to develop an even deeper love for FFA and agriculture

Most people know that Mr. Gundlach taught for over 40 years and continues to help students with their SAEs as he is one of our best resources I learned an incredible amount from Sir and he is someone who leaves a lasting impression on anyone who he comes into contact with ”
Not only has Haley taken advantage of all ag classes offered in Randolph with over 950 hours of agricultural education, she has also shuttled over to Cambria-Friesland School District to expand her ag class options and learn from classes not offered in Randolph. Mrs. Stephanie DeVries offers handson classroom instruction Haley knew would benefit her throughout any job and potential college opportunity
Some of the activities Haley says she will NEVER forget are raising chicks into full term meat birds and harvesting them, dehydrating beef jerky, and making soups from the chickens they raised. Through these experiences, Haley was able to build meaningful rela i hi i h f l at Cambria
Mrs Stephanie perspective to experience she up on her famil notices the pot agricultural ent Haley was the “ haystack” the R Friesland need to new horizon
She stated, “I have had the pleasure of seeing Haley grow from a shy and quiet freshman to a strong leader these past few years. Whether it is her willingness to participate in community service events or attend leadership conferences to network and bring back ideas to her chapter, Haley has demonstrated growth and willingness to learn in multiple ways She was also willing to step outside of her comfort zone and participate in agriculture classes in both schools to ensure students were informed of FFA events.”
While her experience in Cambria will be one she won’t ever forget, she has taken the majority of her classes in Randolph with ag instructor and FFA Advisor Mrs Lauren Freel Throughout her high school career, she has taken Exploration into Agriculture, Ag Survey, Plant and Soil Science, Farm and Business Management, Food Processing and Production (Mrs. aley st in elective ag arly every

Haley knows having strong relationships with an advisor is essential to making any FFA career, and Mrs Freel has thoroughly enjoyed working with Haley throughout this year. Whether it be sitting down to write SAEs together, sorting through the greenhouse, or working through the FFA updates, Mrs. Freel and Haley have worked countless hours together “Haley has been an extraordinary president this year. It is always difficult to find a student so highly intrinsically motivated as Haley is Every day she puts in her best, whether it be in school, FFA or at one of her several jobs. She always strives to better herself and those around her each and every day, and that is what truly makes a leader,” states Mrs. Freel.
Haley notes she couldn’t have gotten to where she has today without the support of many people. “Everyone in my family has played their own role in shaping who I am and they have each shown me how giving back to people and leading others to do so is one of the most important things you can do
My parents work very hard each day to provide for our family, and they have shown me just how much meaning hard work truly holds. My family has pushed me to constantly work as hard as I can, which has driven me to push others around me to lead and work as hard as they can.”
Also, with the support and encouragement of her family members, she has grown to notice the importance of serving others, and has definitely accomplished this throughout her high school career. Haley is a member of various high school organizations such as volleyball, track, National Honor Society (Vice President), Student Council (President), Spanish Club and Science Club while working, and becoming president of the Randolph Cambria-Friesland FFA. Throughout every season of FFA, Haley has continuously assisted with FFA operations. Whether that be mentorship of other members during SAE/Proficiency season, shadowing SAE visits, working extra hours in the greenhouse, or attending leadership conferences, Haley Williams believes that she has learned professional and communication skills through the FFA organization.

ASHTON BRUSVEEN
MAKES STATE FOR FFA CREED SPEAKING
was one of the most important years for the National FFA Organization The FFA Creed was officially written and published for members to study and eventually compete in fully memorized competitions On February 16th, the District 16 Leadership Development Event was held in Ripon State officer Emily Dahlke gave a short address to kick off the night and after Ashton Brusveen was named second place in the Creed Speaking competition, the dates and locations were announced for the next Sectional competition
Ashton Brusveen clearly put many hours in to make his presentation refined and competitive He knows the practice he put in is the reason he moved on to the next division Ashton mentions, "preparing at school in front of my classes helped me to handle pressure When I got to the contest I felt confident that I would do well because of the hard work that I put in ”
The State Creed Speaking competition will be held on Tuesday June 14th running at the same time of the 2022 Wisconsin State Convention. Roughly 10 FFA members from across the state will be competing in the State level of the FFA Creed competition Advisor Miss Lauren Frances states, I saw first hand the hard work and practice that Ashton put in his creed It was so exciting to hear him announced as the section creed speaking leader and to see him compete at the State level It is truly an honor to have made it all the way to state and Ashton should be proud!"
Ashton credits a portion of his comfortability from the experience and practice he gained in Miss Frances’s 6th hour Ag Survey class Ashton Brusveen and Piper Alsum, the two competitors from the Randolph Cambria-Friesland FFA Chapter, were required to recite the creed in front of the class for practice Piper Alsum states “Although I really didn’t want to get up in front of the class, I was glad Miss Frances made Ashton and I recite our creed in front of everybody Our friends were able to help us study by asking questions about the history and wording of the creed This really helped me practice and gain confidence speaking in front of people ” By beginning to prepare early in class, students were able to jump-start the memorization of the five paragraphs
Both Ashton and Piper spent lots of ti outside of the classroom practicing their creed to compete before the Ripon Leadership Development Event (District LDE s) even practicing with Jill Jones a former FFA creed judge to make sure al the boxes were checked for the competition date After the regional contest, which both Piper and Ashton competed in, Ashton began preparing more intensely for the sectional competition with former creed judge Jill Jones
As Jill Jones explains, “Ashton presented the creed to Greg and I, and then we gave him advice on where to place more emphasis in his pronunciations and actions We then went through each paragraph and asked him as many questions as we could think of that he might have to answer at the competition I am very proud of any 8th or 9th grade FFA member that is brave enough to speak in front of judges to recite five paragraphs and answer three extemporaneous questions I am so glad Ashton and Piper have taken the initiative to improve their speaking skills, an asset that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives ”
The FFA Creed was written by EM Tiffany The creed was adopted at the 3rd National FFA Convention in 1930 It was revised at the 38th and 63rd Conventions

Our chapter was honored to participate again in the Randolph Community Corn Carnival. We started out with a group setting up the park on Wednesday and Saturday mornings before the event where we moved tables, set up fencing, and cleaned up the park. On the day of the Corn Carnival, we served food, picked up trash and helped direct cars at the Car Show. The next day, we helped clean-up by moving tables pack, putting supplies away in storage and cleaning up trash around the park. We look forward to helping again with next year's Corn Carnival and carrying on this great Randolph tradition!

A STORY ON THE RCF FFA'S SMALL ANIMAL LAB
by Ashtyn Wiersma
OVER
the course of the 2022-2023 school year, we have introduced some new furry members to our FFA chapter. Closer to the start of our school year our female guinea pig had given birth to three new guinea pig pups which had brought hope and a new start for our animal lab
Continuing throughout this year in 2023, we also introduced three new mini-lop rabbits growing our population of these fur babies to six I will be using the animal lab for my Small Animal Entrepreneurship SAE to breed mini-lop rabbits and guinea pigs
In the middle of the year we decided to bring back the aquatic side of our animal lab when we introduced tilapia to our little family. With the introduction of fish to our animal lab, students are now able to use the fish to further grow their knowledge of aquaculture and the requirements that fish need to survive and grow.
At the end of the school year, we will learn how to filet the fish and prepare to raise new ones next school year.
Our Small Animal and Animal Science classes enjoy taking care of the animals, and using them in demonstrations to further grow our knowledge about their bodies and how they are used. Twice a week our Small Animal class cleans the animal lab to ensure a safe and clean environment for our furry friends
We are looking forward to a litter of mini-lop rabbits along with another litter of guinea pigs this spring RCF FFA is also planning on introducing many other new species into our animal lab to be able to study and grow our knowledge in providing care, comfort and safety to our furry friends

RCF FFA EUGENE JENKINS LAND LAB
Summe at the Land La
By Isaac DeYoung
WORKING at the Randolph Cambria-Friesland Land Lab can be a difficult but ultimately a very fun job
The lab hires RCF FFA members to help run the lab, currently I work with Zach Cupery, Wesley Drews, Nolan Drews, Owen Gould, Nicholas Medema, and Jayden Rose We work out at the lab Monday through Friday from eight in the morning to noon working with a broad range of crops Our largest yield comes from potatoes tomatoes, and cabbage but we work with many others including onions, watermelon, green beans, yellow and red raspberries, radishes, grapes, pepper, and many more
Every morning starts out different from weeding the potatoes to mowing around the raised beds to even random jobs like catching a bee hive in a tree Every day holds a new journey and exciting jobs to be done
Every year we try to expand the Land Lab and make crop yields larger than the prior year.
This year we have made new additions to the lab, including adding a new bee hive and three new raised beds In the new raised beds we have been growing a different variety of plants including squash, radishes, onions, and cherry tomatoes This year we have also taken extra precautions by fencing up all plots and raised beds to try and protect all produce from deer
All produce we grow at the Lab is donated to different food banks in our community including Cambria, Fox Lake, and Beaver Dam. This year we plan on harvesting 5,500 lbs of different foods for the community We currently have over 275 tomatoes, over 275 peppers , three dozen grape vines, two dozen fruit trees, over 2,300 row feet of potatoes, beans, carrots, radishes, onions, squash, cucumbers, rhubarb, asparagus, and are planning on harvesting 500 to 600 pounds of honey this year
The land lab is a great example of the hard work and dedication of the RCF FFA and how we try to give back to the community. Since the Land Lab is completely funded by grants, we work hard to grow as much as we can It is a beautiful place and a great opportunity to learn about different ways to manage a variety of plants and what it takes to grow a successful garden

By: Zach Cupery, Land Lab Manager
This past summer the workers of the Randolph Cambria-Friesland FFA Eugene Jenkins Land Laboratory completed yet another successful seasons work. Zachary Cupery, Nolan Drews, Wesley Drews, Owen
Gould, Isaac DeYoung, Nick Medema, and Jayden Rose would work Monday through Friday 8 a m to 12 p m working with a wide range of crops. These crops included potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, carrots, beans, as well as many others Every day of work is slightly different as we complete tasks as needed The raised beds and fields were tended to every day to make sure that all of our plants were growing optimally The honey bees were kept comfortable in their hives and towards the end of the summer their honey was harvested totaling over 250 bottles of honey Property maintenance and clean up also continued throughout the summer Finally, a new stairway to the lake was constructed with the help of Mr Drews and Land Lab employees
Produce grown at the RCF FFA Land Laboratory is donated to three different community food banks in Cambria, Fox Lake, and Beaver Dam This past summer we projected harvests of around 5,500 pounds of produce I am happy to announce that we greatly surpassed this goal as we harvested and donated over 7000 pounds of produce!
Preparations for next summer are already being made! For the past couple of years we have expanded the Lab, and this next summer is no exception We have already added three new raised beds to the property brining the total up to 21 Also, Dave and Amy Breckheimer have graciously given us the area needed to add 1000 feet of plantable rows which will be populated with potato plants this coming summer. These advancements allow us to plant, grow, and harvest even more produce than the past summer, which can then be donated back to the surrounding communities to those who need it The RCF FFA Land Laboratory is completely funded by grants and donations Without these grants we would be unable to complete the work that we do.
The Randolph Cambria-Friesland FFA Land Laboratory is a beautiful place with many opportunities to learn about and appreciate the importance of FFA The Land Laboratory is a testament to the FFA motto “Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve.” Workers at the FFA Land Lab gain valuable experience as well as credit toward an SAE (Supervised Agricultural Experience) Through our work we are also given the invaluable opportunity to learn about the n day-to-day life that it encompasses It is within this learning and doing that we within which we are living to serve those around us in our communities.
