PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS

2018-2019 RCF FFA President Lucas Miller I am writing this address a little over the halfway marking in my presidency, for the Randolph Cambria-Friesland FFA. Throughout my term I have learned many new things and have had many new opportunities that I can now look back on and really appreciate.

To any and all FFA members thinking about running for President I highly recommend it. As the FFA president you are a busy person and will meet a lot of new people and learn countless things, as have I. Although the FFA presidency is difficult and stressful at times you’ll get the job done, as we have luxury of having one of the most dedicated and hardworking advisors. Sir, although the busy man that he is, will go all out for any that seeks his help, no matter what time of the day he will make something work. The presidency demands a lot of responsibility and understanding the importance of what you are doing. The president is rewarded for his responsibility and understanding in return. Although the presidency seems challenging in the moment it will not seem like it when you look back.

The Randolph Cambria-Friesland, despite its location in three rural townships, is still one of the biggest, most respected, and most successful chapters in the State and in the Nation. With the FFA’s involvement in SAE’s and in the community, the members and officers are rarely without something to do. We pride ourselves on our community involvement, since it is our way of giving back to the most gracious donors to the FFA. Without the donations the FFA receives, we would not be able to come close to what our chapter does today. Once again this year we’re involved or are involving ourselves in a number of community events, such as; the FFA’s annual Sandbox Fill, Christmas Fruit Sale, local blood drives, multiple food pantries, and the Community Corn Carnival. Thanks to another good harvest year at the FFA Land Laboratory, we were able to again expand our donations to local food banks from last year.

Each and every one of our members is a part of a Program of Activities, put together by the officer team. This consists of Growing Leaders, Building Communities, and Strengthening Agriculture. The FFA members are constantly involved in these areas and have benefitted our chapter with being the award of a Gold Rated National Chapter year after year. Along with being Gold Rated Chapter, we are frequently successful with state and national proficiencies.

In 2002, the Eugene Jenkins Land Laboratory was donated to the local Agriculture and FFA Foundation. It consists of 40 acres, and includes a lake. The Land Laboratory is a huge contributor to the FFA, as many of our FFA members have the opportunity to build SAE’s so they can compete at the state and national level, as well as gather knowledge on their interests and on the variety of plants which we grow. A majority of the hours are spent planting, maintaining, and harvesting the fruit and vegetables grown, as well as mowing lawn and pruning trees. In the previous three years, we have invested in bee hives to increase our crop quality. We started with four hives and have increased to eleven hives this past summer providing six members with SAE’s.

I am looking forward to the countdown of the months as president, and I am very confident the upcoming months will be just as successful as the previous months. I am determined to have the work I do be in the best interest and hopefully benefit our present members and our future ones as well.

FFA BANQUET SET The Randolph Cambria-Friesland FFA has set the date for its annual awards banquet for Thursday, April 11, 2019 at 7:00 pm. (SUBJECT TO POSSIBLE CHANGE) Members will be recognized for their achievements and adult supporters as well as all Randolph Agriculture & FFA Foundation donors will be recognized.

The meal will consist of two meats, potato, vegetable, salad, and dessert. More information will follow in the school district newsletter.

COMMENTS FROM THE 2017-2018 FFA PRESIDENT

Austin Syvertson Serving as this chapter’s president during 2017-2018 is a tremendous experience I will never forget. This opportunity has provided me with many skills and memories that will benefit my life in the future. Being president is not always fun and easy, it is worth all the time and effort required.

The possibilities provided to the members of the FFA and myself are numerous. None of these opportunities would be possible without the tremendous support from donors and Alumni. There is no one I would like to thank more than the man, Mr. Gundlach. Without Sir I would not have accomplished as much as I have. Without these people this chapter’s FFA experience would be nowhere near what it is.

NEW AGRICULTURE TEACHER/FFA ADVISOR

Alexis Stibor Alexis Stibor grew up on a beef and crop farm in Osseo, Wisconsin. She was very involved in the OsseoFairchild FFA chapter, where she served as the reporter. In high school she received a gold-rated beef entrepreneurship proficiency and completed her FFA journey as a student in 2016 when she earned her American Degree. Recently, Alexis graduated from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls with a bachelor's degree in Agricultural Education and Crop Science.

This past semester, she was intern teaching at Pardeeville High School where she taught Forestry, Critter Care, Middle School Agriscience, Wildlife Management, and Sustainable Agriculture. She is excited to embark on a new journey with the Randolph Cambria-Friesland Agriculture Department and FFA.

Just a short note to say thank you to all the people and businesses who have helped the Agriculture Program and FFA grow into one that is well known and respected across the state and nation.

We have so much for students and the status we enjoy is due to your support as well as the commitment of the Randolph and Cambria-Friesland School Boards to support the curriculum and its initiatives.

As I retire, I take comfort in the fact a good foundation is in place and we have a young and talented person in Alexis Stibor to take my place.

2018 RCF FFA BANQUET Our annual FFA Banquet was held on April 5, 2017 with nearly 260 people attending.

STATE FFA CONVENTION 2018 RCF FFA STATE FFA CONVENTION The RCF FFA fared well again at the State FFA Convention held June 11-14 in Madison, Wisconsin. Logan Paul won one of the four State Star areas by claiming the State Star in Agribusiness title. Levi Alsum finished fourth in the State Star In Agriculture Placement competition.

State Proficiency winners Seth Cupery, Maverick Guenther, Jeremy Hoekstra, and Logan Paul were recognized with a $250 check and a plaque. Twenty-two other FFA members also received a check for their gold rated proficiencies.

Ten members received the State FFA Degree (Levi Alsum, Wesley Bancroft, Cameron Sauer, Ashley Erdmann, Dalton Fuller, Mitchell Miller, Logan Paul, Nathaniel Priester, Austin Syvertson, and Jake Vick).

Austin Syvertson was recognized as a Three Star Chapter President and the RCF FFA was rated Silver in the National Chapter Program. Drew Adel was recognized as an American FFA Degree candidate.

Colten De Jager and Sadie Schmid serves as the chapter delegates and voted on constitution changes as well as voting to elect the new Section VI State FFA officer.

Also attending the convention were Joseline Stringfield and Megan Stancer as well as twenty-three gold rated proficiency award winners who received a check for their efforts.

RCF FFA PROFICIENCY SUCCESS HISTORY Since Jamie Bylsma became the first RCF FFA member to win a State FFA Proficiency in 1995, over one hundred-forty FFA members have followed suit with nearly seventy becoming National Proficiency Finalists and twelve being named National Proficiency Winners.

Since 1996, there has not been a year where our FFA didn’t have multiple state proficiency winners as well as multiple proficiency national finalists.

NATIONAL FFA CONVENTION NATIONAL FFA CONVENTION The RCF FFA attended the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana October 23-27. Members attending included Megan Stancer, Joseline Stringfield, Jax Rataczak, Morgan Jones, Abbi Schwark, Rylee Prochnow, Hanna Raley, Ethan Hamann, Jessica Bahr, Matt Dykstra, Brandyn DeVries, Aidan Bobholz, Carter Beaulieu, Seth Cupery, Macy Williams, Dillin Schulz, Colten DeJager, Kailee Powell, Logan Paul, and Jeremy Hoekstra. Also attending were advisors Cal Bouwkamp and Keith Gundlach.

Members attended sessions, toured area sites, attended the Career Show, and saw the final proficiency awards where Logan Paul and Jeremy Hoekstra were National Finalists. Logan placed first in the nation and won $1,000 while Jeremy placed second and took home $500.

The National Convention set a record attendance total again with 69,994 members and guests.

Jeremy Hoekstra placed second and Logan Paul first after being selected as National Proficiency Finalists at the National FFA Convention October 23-27 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Four members in each of forty-seven SAE areas are selected each July and prepare for an interview at the National FFA Convention each October.

Logan competed in the area of Agricultural Mechanics Repair and Maintenance-Placement won $1,000 while Jeremy competed in the area of Landscape Management and took home $500.

Drew Adel received his American FFA Degree, which is a great accomplishment with less than one-half of one percent of FFA members reaching the highest FFA Degree awarded each year. Drew waited until his last year of eligibility to see if he might be a Star Finalist.

RCF FFA HISTORY NOTE The RCF had its first State winning proficiency in 1996 and its first National Finalist Proficiency in 1997 when four members were finalists and one was a national winner. Our FFA has had State winning proficiencies every year since 1996 and has also had National Proficiency Finalists every year since 1997. This past October was the 23rd consecutive year for our chapter having a National Proficiency Finalist.

MEMORIAL CIRCLE AT EUGENE JENKINS MEMORIAL LAND LABORATORY

David “Woody” Jenkins passed away on Monday, December 8, 2014. “Woody” mentored many of the FFA members who worked at the garden. His assistance and help in machinery operation and carpentry was invaluable to our FFA and its members. Woody lived at the land lab since Eugene passed away in 2009 and cared for as well as watched over many of the projects being developed by FFA members. He often chaperoned workers if Sir had to leave for awhile and would always monitor the irrigation if needed. There was nothing he would not do for our FFA members. The plaque was the idea of the FFA members who knew and worked with Woody.

REMEMBERING EUGENE

Pictured is the Memorial Circle at the Eugene Jenkins Memorial Land Laboratory. Eugene Jenkins began this in a tribute to his mother and the FFA has continued it with a plaque honoring Eugene and a plaque installed two summers ago in honor and in memory of David “Woody” Jenkins.

REMEMBERING WOODY The RCF FFA finished the memorial to Eugene Jenkins this past fall. It is a fitting tribute to a man whose gift of the land laboratory to our Agriculture & FFA Foundation has served as the focal point for learning in the SAE areas of vegetable production, fruit production, turf grass management, landscaping, diversified horticulture, and environmental science and natural resources management. With the assistance of Randolph Memorials, this plaque was installed near the memorial Eugene put in place to honor and memorialize his parents, Ed and Hilda Jenkins.

TRACTOR CERTIFICATION TO BE TAUGHT IN RANDOLPH

PLANNED GIVING BENEFITS AG & FFA FOUNDATION

Any student of the Randolph or Cambria-Friesland School Districts will have the opportunity to obtain their Tractor Certification for working for area farmers and driving on the highway right here in Randolph.

The RCF FFA, through a grant written by the Ag Leadership class, has secured the funds to be able to offer the Tractor Certification class here.

Keith Gundlach, the Agriculture instructor met with Cheryl Skjolaas, Youth Agricultural Safety Specialist from the University of Wisconsin Center for Agricultural Safety and Health. After reviewing materials for the course with Skjolaas, agriculture instructor, Keith Gundlach, is certified to teach the course for Tractor Certification standards.

Please keep time open in June for dates the course will be taught. At this time, we are looking at the third week in June for a three day course. Lunch will be provided to the students in the class at no charge. Students outside the Randolph and Cambria-Friesland School Districts may also take the course. Course fees will be $10.00. Students will all receive the state certification certificate once they finish the course and their names are reported. If they are fourteen, they will also receive their federal certificate. If not fourteen, the certificate will be held until they turn fourteen.

From mid-March until the end of May, you may contact Keith Gundlach at 920-326-2429 for more information on the course and register for the summer course.

Looking for a way to make a substantial contribution to the Agriculture and FFA Foundation? Depending upon your age and several other factors, you can have the recognition of being a major donor to the Ag & FFA Foundation or any other Foundation supported by the Randolph School District.

The Randolph Agriculture and FFA Foundation is currently the recipient of three planned giving programs. Two are confidential while the other is sponsored by Keith Gundlach. Twenty-five years ago, Gundlach purchased a $25,000 life insurance policy with the school district foundations named as the beneficiary. Of the total policy value, $20,000 is intended for the Agriculture and FFA Foundation. This plan costs Gundlach $372 per year or about $1.00 per day and is tax deductible. The dividends from the policy go to Gundlach each year. Of course, for the district to collect, Keith Gundlach has to expire which everyone does sooner or later.

A planned giving program is an opportunity for someone to make a substantial contribution to the Agriculture and FFA program or to the Agriculture and FFA Foundation where only generated interest can be used.

If you are interested, there are any number of arrangements that can be made in any amount or for any foundation. A $10,000 policy is much cheaper and still gives the Agriculture and FFA program a substantial gift. Contact Keith Gundlach or your insurance agent for details. Thank you for your consideration.

CURRICULUM CROSSWALK Horticulture is the first curriculum to be crosswalked with the science standards. Once completed and approved by the Department of Instruction, Horticulture will be accepted as a science credit for admission to all state colleges, including the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Both Horticulture and Conservation classes are using the CAERT curriculum which is aligned to the state and national standards for agriculture.

Both classes have in the CAERT curriculum standards which are heavily tied to the state science standards for secondary school instruction. They are also aligned to the common core standards.

In the coming several years, all of the agriculture curriculum will be switched to the CAERT model while adding to the new model areas of the current curriculum which have worked well in specific instructional areas.

FOOD SCIENCE COURSE A course in Food Science is being prepared for presentation to the School Board’s Curriculum Committee for the 2019-2020 school year. The Agriculture Department is reviewing course outlines from a growing number of schools who are offering this as a part of their Agriculture class offerings.

RANDOLPH FFA ALUMNI CONTINUES TO GROW AND SUPPORT AG AND FFA PROGRAMS The Randolph FFA Alumni again increased their support of the Randolph School District agriculture department and the combined Randolph Cambria-Friesland FFA. Areas supported include: $400-FFA Alumni Scholarships $300-Donation towards FFA Banquet $300-Donation towards sending members to the National FFA Convention $100-Donation to the American FFA Degree Fund $250-Donation towards sending fifty-one members to the State FFA Convention $500-Donation for curriculum enrichment for items not included in the school district budget $100-Donation as ads for FFA activities $100-Donation to FFA to offset accounting costs for Form 990's required by the IRS $750-End of the year grant to the FFA for end of the year needs and summer programs To support the previously mentioned FFA activities, the FFA Alumni holds an annual Labor Day Breakfast which has grown larger each year. Special thanks to everyone who attends this fund raiser.

In April of each year, the Alumni assists the FFA with their annual banquet.

Current officers are Seth Braker, president; Mike Biel, vice present, Mike Buss, secretary; and Barb Braker, treasurer.

Dues are reasonable and you need not have been in agriculture classes or the FFA in high school to join. All you need is a desire to support the local agriculture department and FFA. Meetings are held six to seven times per year. All members receive the agendas for each meeting plus financial summaries for all activities the Alumni is involved with and an end of the total financial report used to file form 990 for the IRS. Consider a membership. All are welcome.

The RCF FFA wants to thank Compeer Financial for awarding them a grant for $3,000 for equipment purchases and expansion of the garden area at the Eugene Jenkins Land Laboratory. The FFA expanded the garden and increased the produce donated by over 500 pounds this past summer and fall. The grant allowed us to not only add garden equipment but to also add bee hives and enclose them in a bear proof fence.

The RCF FFA was again a recipient of a grant in the amount of $250 from the Beaver Dam Community Hospital Foundation to buy harvest equipment and containers for produce to be donated to area food banks. Our FFA has expanded the program again and added additional bee hives at the land lab. We appreciate the donation as the Food Bank Program, even with grants, draws heavily on our treasury.

The grant will be used to expand our gardens at the Eugene Jenkins Land Laboratory next year. Produce grown will be donated to the Food Banks in Randolph, Cambria, Fox Lake, and Beaver Dam. The grant was competitive and we appreciate working

This year the event raised more than $2,000 for Local FFA Chapters. In mid-December, Heidi Alsum Dykstra presented the RCF FFA with a check for $500 to be used in our Program of Activities.

GRANTS/DONATIONS Our FFA has ordered our fruit from Alsum Farms & Produce since 1980 when Randy Fischer told the then fairly new Mr. Gundlach about the business.

We encourage participation in this event which will occur in September next year.

SENECA DONATION The Seneca Foods Foundation awarded the RCF FFA a $125 grant requested by the Seneca Foods Corporation factory in Cambria, Wisconsin. This is the second year the Cambria plant requested a donation for our chapter. It was used to defray the expenses of the National FFA Convention. Thank You Seneca!!!

WELSH PRAIRIE 4-H SHAMROCK SHUFFLE GRANT

Leystra Seeds LLC, a Pioneer sales agency nominated the Randolph Cambria-Friesland FFA for a grant sponsored by DuPont Pioneer for its dedication to customer focused activities throughout the year.

The FFA was successful with the application and received $1,000 in early June for projects at the Eugene Jenkins FFA Land Laboratory.

DuPont Pioneer (www.pioneer.com) is the world’s leading developer and supplier of advanced plant genetics, providing high-quality seeds to farmers in more than 90 countries.

The RCF FFA was voted as the second place organization for the Welsh Prairie Livewires 4-H Club annual Shamrock Shuffle and received a grant from the 4-H for $1500. The money was designated by the FFA to promote their growing Food Bank Fresh Produce program. Last year, over 2500 pounds of fresh produce was donated and this year we have set a goal of 4000 pounds.

Many members of the Welsh Prairie Livewires 4-H Club are becoming FFA members and excelling in their SAE’s. Please remember to support the Shamrock Shuffle in early March of each year.

GRANTS/DONATIONS COMMUNITY CORN CARNIVAL DONATION

The Randolph Corn Carnival recently awarded over $3500 to community organizations from proceeds from the Randolph Corn Carnival held on Labor Day. FFA members assist the group by putting up and taking down the signs, hauling materials to and from the park before and after the carnival, setting up the park by moving picnic tables and setting up trash barrels, setting up stands for area groups, and doing park clean up after the carnival. This year, they also did the trash barrel duty during the carnival.

The Corn Carnival Committee awarded the FFA $2000 for their efforts and we would like to thank them for their support!!!

3 C’S CAR SHOW DONATION

The 3 C’s Car Show recently presented the RCF FFA with a $1000 donation. The donation was from their

Car Show held on Labor Day in conjunction with the Randolph Community Corn Carnival. The 3 C’s Car Show has supported the RCF FFA with generous donations for a number of years. The money is used by the FFA in helping to implement its programs in support of the Randolph and Cambria-Friesland area communities. Thank You!!!

AG & FFA ENROLLMENT REPORT The RHS agriculture department and FFA remains one of the largest in Wisconsin. The FFA has been the largest in Wisconsin for fourteen of the past seventeen years. Membership this year is 368 individuals which includes some members out of school, but actively seeking FFA awards above the chapter level.

Daily attendance in agriculture classes this year is 132 students with the middle school exploratory courses included. Over 210 students are seen each year. Registration numbers for 2018-2019 aren’t available yet.

Junior High agriculture students only have exploratory agriculture classes for six weeks, but are FFA members to increase their involvement and improve their chances for their State FFA Degrees and other awards. Junior high FFA members can start some FFA activities which will make their State FFA Degree applications stronger when they are seniors. Some examples of junior high participation include Quiz Bowl and Creed contests. We are glad the Cambria-Friesland Middle School students now have the opportunity to take Agriculture classes as they can now build their SAE’s and resumes a year earlier like the Randolph students do.

At the time agriculture was reintroduced into the curriculum at Randolph High School in 1977, twenty-three students were in agriculture classes. Enrollment has grown to current levels due to tremendous community and school board support. The curriculum has also changed, becoming more science and math oriented while stressing career opportunities available to agriculture students. With over twenty percent of all jobs in the United States directly linked to agriculture, career choices in agriculture are very promising.

AGRICULTURE CURRICULUM The RHS agriculture curriculum is undergoing its 12th revision since 1977. The Randolph School Board approved the latest updated curriculum at its April 2010 board meeting as part of its ongoing curriculum review process. Added three years ago were courses from the CAERT curriculum which are aligned with state and federal standards for mathematics and science.

Students may access the CAERT curriculum anywhere they have access to a computer as the curriculum in internet based. The CAERT curriculum in Agriculture Business Management is also aligned to the state financial literacy standards.

DTN (DATA TRANSMISSION NETWORK) is still used for some finance lessons and is part of the subscription maintained. This has been accomplished with the assistance of a grant from the Wisconsin Power and Light Foundation. The use of DTN allows students to download numerous programs and data. Weather, news, markets, and U.S. policy (both foreign and domestic), are only minutes from the classroom at any given time.

Also underway is the drafting of new course outlines which will be submitted to various universities for acceptance as academic credit for admission purposes. At any time, the RHS agriculture department can download the entire agriculture programs of any state connected with Internet services. The downloading of these curriculums allows them to be compared with the local curriculum and with word processing, additions to or deletions from given units occur at the touch of a button. The use of CAERT is also allowing instant alignment to the common core standards.

The 1997-1998 school year saw the addition of a course in Small Animal Care and Management/Veterinary Technology.

This course will give RHS and CFHS students credits in the LAT (laboratory animal technician) program at MATC once articulation is complete. The completed building addition provides the hands on part of this course to ensure its value to post-secondary institutions.

The 1998-1999 school year saw the addition of an Agriculture Mechanics course. It is now offered as both a Technology Education course and an Agriculture course and taught by Mr. Drews in the Technology Education department.

Students in this course are learning the basics in tool maintenance as well as welding, hydraulics, and electricity. A new course in biotechnology was approved by the board several years ago, but hasn’t been taught yet due to lack of instructor time. This course has a high science and biology content and will consist of a lot of laboratory work involving genetics and DNA in the areas of plants and animals. A Leadership course, was first offered for the 2001-2002 school year. It deals with professional resumes, scholarship applications, award applications, grant writing for the district in curricular and other areas, taxes and finances, and numerous other activities related to developing leadership qualities. It is a popular course limited to seniors and has had two sections some years.

The Randolph Agriculture Curriculum has served as a model for several school districts and is constantly being upgraded. Colleges and technical schools can not meet the demand for agriculture graduates now and a sound curriculum gives our students a great start in their post-secondary education in this area. This past few years and continuing this year and into the future, the Agriculture curriculum has evolved even further.

As the governor and legislature move toward a state mandate for three years of science and three years of mathematics required to graduate from high school, the Wisconsin Association of Agriculture Educators (WAAE) has seized the initiative and began the process for obtaining state department of public instruction approval for agriculture courses to be approved as science credit. WAAE has moved toward science based curriculum by working with CAERT. CAERT is a web-based curriculum that has been adopted by over forty-five states and is advancing curriculum in ways not yet conceived by some people in education. The curriculum at Randolph High School has adopted five of the nine new curriculum models and will have all nine adopted with some modifications in the near future. Two classes, Horticulture and Conservation, are currently being taught from the CAERT curriculum using the Internet. Not only does the CAERT curriculum meet strict science guidelines, the Agribusiness CAERT curriculum also meets all the state of Wisconsin guidelines for financial literacy. Progress in this area is moving at an incredible speed at this time. At this time Horticulture has been crosswalked for science credit and Conservation is being crosswalked. Once approved locally, they will be submitted for state approval and then will be accepted for admission to state colleges as a science credit.

The Randolph School Board Curriculum Committee reviews the agriculture curriculum on a three year rotating cycle and the committee as well as the school board must receive some credit for allowing and encouraging curriculum growth.

INFOVETS & AET These Internet based tools are now also part of the curriculum and award application tools. These tools assist the Agriculture curriculum and our students in keeping abreast of new technologies and award application software.

AGRICULTURE CLASSES AND THE FFA PAY DIVIDENDS Enrollments in agriculture courses are at the highest level of all time. Why? Student interest and the prospect of employment are the reasons. All three agriculture campuses in Wisconsin report a shortage of graduates to fill the demand for jobs. This past fall, nearly twenty school districts were short agriculture teachers when school started and the positions were filled with emergency licenses. People will always need to eat and while some do not understand where the food comes from and others don’t care, the demand for the food will always be there. It is the demand for the experts in this field that make students aware of the opportunities.

The FFA also plays an important part in the student decision to take an agriculture course. It is a program that stresses record keeping and management decisions. It also gives students travel experiences and a chance to interact with other FFA members across Wisconsin and United States.

Lastly, the agriculture curriculum at Randolph High School is recognized as being up to date and for being developed to fit the needs of the community and students.

Additionally, graduating seniors each year secure nearly $15,000 in local agriculture scholarships, the highest amount around the area and state for locally generated agriculture scholarships. They also have numerous agriculture company scholarships available to them.

So far this year, RCF FFA members have received over $67,000 in SAE awards and SAE Grants.

In short, agriculture courses and the FFA will remain a strong curricular area and demand for the graduates will continue to grow. This, in turn, will attract and maintain enrollment.

DEMAND FOR AG GRADUATES HIGH Agriculture graduates, whether they are from universities or technical colleges are headed for promising careers.

If you check the statistics from the colleges of agriculture at UW-Madison, UW-Platteville, and UW-River Falls as well as the technical colleges, you will find placement rates between 90% and 100% for agriculture majors.

Agriculture education majors at all three campuses have a 100% placement rate for those students seeking teaching positions. However, some agriculture education majors go out of state to find employment and this compounds the shortage.

The past few years in Wisconsin have seen an extreme shortage of agriculture teachers and it is getting worse. So far for the 2016-2017 school year there have been enough announced retirements to outpace the number of students graduating and willing to teach.

The anticipated demand for students with agriculture majors remains strong and is expected to exceed demand for some time. As agriculture expands its knowledge and involvement in the areas of global marketing and research, this demand is only going to get stronger.

COMMUNITY SERVICE COLUMBIA COUNTY FAIR FFA BREAKFAST Our FFA again worked at the Columbia County FFA Breakfast Sunday morning at the fair. Our efforts resulted in a check for our FFA of just over $250. We also expect about $500 from the Sale of Champions Auction.

NATIONAL SAE SUCCESS SAE (Supervised Agriculture Experience) is one of the three legs of the agriculture education program with the other two being classroom instruction and FFA. Students have the chance to develop a SAE project and use the project to learn and compete for awards through SAE programs.

COMMUNITY SERVICE The RCF FFA continued to assist the area communities which support our FFA.

FFA SANDBOX FILL Fourteen RCF FFA members teamed up to fill sandboxes for area families in the Randolph, Cambria, and Friesland areas on May 24. The sandbox fill is an annual event completed each May for families in the three communities and rural areas served by our FFA. Four trucks completed the event with teams of four or five members in each truck crew. Upon completion of the event, the crew met at Subway for food and refreshments.

The FFA began this event by assisting the Randolph Kiwanis who ran the program for years. Upon the dissolving of the Kiwanis, the FFA took the program over and has been in charge since that time. We will continue to get calls during May and will accommodate those people needing sand if possible.

RANDOLPH CORN CARNIVAL WORK RCF FFA members are again volunteered to help with the Community Corn Carnival. We put up and took down the signs, assisted with the park set up, and then assisted with clean-up and taking down and putting away the signs. This year we also had eight members on trash duty from 11:00 a.m. after the parade until 5:30 and assisted with lumber take down and stacking for the Dalton Lumber Yard.

Our FFA has assisted with this event since 1981 and this year has over twenty-five different members involved in this annual community event which assists numerous youth and adult organizations.

The simple words, "thank you" do not say enough to convey how much we appreciate everything Keith Gundlach has done for all of the students of Randolph and CambriaFriesland. He always put students first and we are certain that many of them would not have gotten as far in life as they have without the guidance of "Sir." THANK YOU! FFA members again helped with the Labor Day Race ran by Rita Hookstead and the Marsh View Veterinary Clinic.

This year the proceeds benefitted cancer research. These members assisted with registration and handed out water to the runners before returning to help the FFA Alumni with their Labor Day Breakfast.

On Tuesday, May 29, twelve FFA members assisted the VFW in folding over one hundred flags flown in the cemetery for Memorial Day.

COLUMBIA COUNTY FARM BUREAU FOOD STAND WORKERS Five RCF FFA members worked a four hour shift for the Columbia County Farm Bureau at the Columbia County Fair. Six FFA members attended the Columbia County Farm Bureau Annual Meeting in early September as our chapter is recognized for their volunteer work in this area.

Over $28,000 was sold and the total should exceed $30,000 when the extra nuts, popcorn, and candy are sold. The top individual seller was Lucas Miller with over $4,400.

COLORED CHICKS

FOOD FOR AMERICA

Nearly forty students in Animal Science and Ag Survey classes had the opportunity to produce a colored chick.

At the appropriate time in the incubation period all students could inject dye into their eggs if they wished. Their carefulness paid off in neon yellow, pink, red, and blue chicks.

The RCF FFA hosted over three hundred-seventy pre-kindergarten through third grade students from two school districts plus a pre-school program over five days in early May. Students learned about chickens/eggs, ducklings, our laboratory rats, the perch we are raising and also toured our greenhouse to learn about plants and select one to plant for Mother’s Day. Our FFA also prepares lessons for teachers to use and this fall will tour the schools with hands on activities involving food production.

LAND LABORATORY FOOD BANK PROJECT Work continued at the land laboratory with the produce being donated to four area food banks: Randolph, Cambria, Fox Lake, Beaver Dam. The RHS FCCLA joined in the harvest and also preserved some of the produce for donations.

FCCLA JOINS THE FOOD BANK PRODUCE PROJECT The RHS FCCLA joined the RCF FFA to add more value to the Food Bank Project and lengthen the donation time by canning some produce before the frost. The members and Mrs. Dykstra canned tomatoes and made salsa. A good number of the students are in both groups.

LOCAL AG/FFA SCHOLARSHIPS Students in the agriculture department and Randolph Cambria-Friesland FFA are fortunate to have a large number of scholarships to assist them with their postsecondary education. What began as one $400 scholarship is now 22 scholarships worth approximately $15,000.

Many require the State FFA Degree or prefer it when selecting the recipient. (*) FFA Leadership Scholarship-$250 This scholarship is sponsored by the FFA in recognition of outstanding leadership and commitment to the programs of the RCF FFA. There are no restrictions although officers by virtue of their positions have the best opportunity for this scholarship. * Randolph FFA Alumni Scholarships-$400 This scholarship is sponsored by the Randolph FFA Alumni and is restricted to FFA members having a minimum of three years of agriculture classes. Preference is given to students pursuing an agricultural major and those having been in agriculture classes four years or having taken four or more agriculture classes. One major $400 scholarship is awarded plus additional $200 scholarships if deemed as needed. * Michael D. Holloway Scholarship-$500 This scholarship is sponsored by Keith Gundlach in honor of Michael D. Holloway. Michael served as FFA President and was the first RCF FFA recipient of the American FFA Degree. This scholarship is restricted to FFA members with a minimum of three years of agriculture. Preference is given to students pursuing an agriculture major. * John and Minerva O’Laughlin Scholarship-$500 This scholarship is supported by an endowment from the children of John & Minerva O’Laughlin. Applicants must have attended Randolph High School for two years with a preference for students who have attended three or four years. Preference will be given in an area of agriculture where scholarships are not provided. *

Tuenis Zondag Memorial Scholarship-$500 This scholarship is awarded in memory of Tuenis Zondag. It is supported by interest from the Agriculture and FFA Foundation. Tuenis was a charter member of the FFA Alumni and a member of the agriculture advisory council.

One $500 scholarship is awarded to a student who has had three years of agriculture classes. Exceptions may be made by the family.

Steve & Christa Slinger Short Course Scholarship This scholarship is supported by Steve & Christa Slinger. It is awarded to a student who attends the UW-Madison Farm & Industry Short Course program at UW-Madison.

Caylee was a student from Cambria-Friesland High School who had a love for agriculture. This scholarship is to help benefit a student who is interested in furthering their education in the field of agriculture.

Adam Hahn Family Scholarship - $500-This scholarship is supported by Adam Hahn. It is his belief that a background in agriculture and the FFA does a lot to develop young men and women into better people. It is awarded to a student furthering their education in the area of Animal Science. The recipient must have been in agriculture classes for four years or have taken a minimum of four agriculture courses in three years. This may be waived if no agriculture majors fit the above criteria.

Students who plan to pursue agriculture in the area of Animal Science in their post-high school studies shall be given preference, but the scholarship may be awarded to students in closely related areas such as Pre-Vet or Nutrition. Adam Hahn shall have the final say on whether a student meets the scholarship requirements.

Richard Gorr Memorial Scholarship-$250 This scholarship is sponsored by the family of Richard Gorr.

The RCF FFA wants to thank the Cambria-Friesland School District for their recent donation to our FFA. It helps with the National FFA Convention as well as the costs involved in individual grant applications, contracts and agreements, and student thank you’s. CF enrollment is climbing and their student grant success is also increasing each year.

RCF FFA STARS HISTORY The Randolph Cambria-Friesland FFA awards four extremely important awards each year at the annual FFA Awards Banquet. These awards are reflective of the overall quality of a student's SAE (Supervised Ag Experience Program). The awards are not given lightly and are often looked upon as the top awards for individuals at the FFA Banquet other than the State and American FFA Degrees. Listed below are the Star Chapter Farmer Awards and Star Chapter Agribusinessmen Awards since agriculture was reintroduced to the Randolph school system in 1977. These are the only records we could locate but are having the Cambria-Friesland FFA's records searched to update this list. New categories in Star In Agricultural Placement and Star In AgriScience were added on the state and national levels in 2002 and the RCF FFA has followed suit.

Many of the chapter stars went on to become State Star nominees and some became State Stars. That history is shown below.

The FFA did not have participants in Prepared Public Speaking, Discussion Meet, or Parliamentary Procedure this year. RCF FFA is in Section VI which has three districts. Each district has a contest with two winners advancing to a sectional contest. From the sectional contest, one person or team advances to the state contest.

In Extemporaneous Speaking, Cobey Alderden placed first and will advance to the Sectional Contest in Rio on March 4, 2019. Carter Beaulieu placed third and will compete again next year.

Nolan Drews In Creed Speaking, Nolan Drews placed third. He will enter another area next year as his Creed speaking eligibility has now expired.

AG SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM CONTINUES GROWTH What began in the early 1980’s as one $400 FFA Alumni Scholarship has expanded to twenty-two scholarships which total over $12,000 when the multiple giving ones are added. Many require students receive their State FFA Degree and/or have a minimum of three years of agriculture classes.

Four RCF FFA members attended the Sectional Leadership Workshop in Sauk Prairie in late September. They were part of over 200 members from Section VI who attended leadership workshops and helped develop goals for the chapter for the upcoming year. In addition to seeing Wisconsin’s State officer team, they also heard from the Western Region National FFA Vice President.

While the members were involved in planning for the FFA Program of Activities, Mr. Gundlach attended a two hour meeting for advisors and was updated on new programs for the upcoming year.

AGRICULTURE INSTRUCTOR HISTORY-RHS & CFHS Success for any Agriculture and FFA program is directly proportional to the longevity of the instructor or the ability of a new instructor to manage the good programs in place while incorporating his/her strengths into the program.

In Randolph and Cambria-Friesland, I have been fortunate to work with school boards committed to the success of an Agriculture program with an active FFA. Many of the activities and achievements over the years would not have been possible without the level of support from not only both school boards but also the communities of Cambria, Friesland, and Randolph.

The program here is state and nationally known for its successes in the FFA Program of Activities as well as the success of our students in SAE recognition. These successes have a tendency to increase the interest in our students for competing in events above the chapter level. In short, success has a tendency to breed success.

Our FFA would welcome local sponsors (business or personal) for our proficiencies so we could better recognize members at our FFA Banquet. Local sponsorship would be $20 for one of the forty-seven areas and local sponsors would be recognized at the FFA Banquet and by having their names in the banquet program. WHAT IS AN SAE: SAE (Supervised Agriculture Experience) is one of the three legs in the agriculture education program. The other two legs _____YES I am interested in sponsoring a local proficiency for are classroom instruction and FFA. Students can win local, state, and 2019 at a cost of $20.00. Please send your national recognition based on the development of their SAE and the RCF sponsorship to: FFA has fared well in state and national competition over the years. Randolph was chartered in 1938 with the Wisconsin FFA Association and Cambria-Friesland was chartered in 1952 with the Wisconsin FFA Association. The Agriculture programs were merged from 1969-1970 to 1976-1977 at CambriaFriesland High School with one FFA. From 1977-1978 to 1986-1987 each school had separate Agriculture programs. BEE UPDATE-MAY We have expanded the FFA Apiary. We now have eleven hives and room for three thanks to some student National SAE grants and some FFA grants. We have eight new hive stands built by Mr. Adel and a new fence thanks to Mr. Drews with three electric wires for bear protection if needed. Five students will oversee their own hives; Jax Rataczak, Owen Gould, Wesley Drews, Wesley Medema, Nolan Drews, and Lucas Miller.

BEES ARE RETURNING DIVIDENDS TO FFA AND STUDENTS--AUGUST The eleven bee hives had the honey harvested at the end of August. Five student with SAE’s in the area of bees (Specialty Animals) and Agriculture Processing split the harvest with the FFA. Over 225 bottles were harvested.

POLLINATOR HABITAT GRANT UPDATE The plants have moved to the prairie setting and are being watered three to four times a week until well established. Thank you to Dave & Amy Breckheimer for providing the land and doing the initial preparation of the site.

Thank you to Howard Williams for mowing the area again and then digging holes through the sod for planting areas. The holes were raked in and good soil added to facilitate growth.

Over three hundred wildflower plugs were transplanted. We will keep you posted on the project development.

AMERICAN FFA DEGREE FUND CONTINUES TO ASSIST AMERICAN FFA DEGREE WINNERS Over fifty individuals and companies contributed over $3000 to the American FFA Degree Fund in 2016 for the 2014 American FFA Degree recipients. This fund was established to assist American FFA Degree winners in attending the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis. With the current size of the agriculture department, it is difficult for the FFA to offer financial assistance to American FFA Degree winners and still carry on our yearly program of work The American FFA Degree is the culmination of an FFA member's FFA career. It represents the highest honor an FFA member can achieve and it seems inappropriate a recipient should have to pay the entire cost of transportation, lodging, and meals for two days in Indianapolis to receive this degree.

The Randolph Cambria-Friesland FFA would like to publicly thank the donors who have assisted with this idea. Donors who contribute $20.00 or more each year will receive a pair of complimentary tickets to the FFA banquet in April. Logan Paul began Logan’s Metal Art when he entered high school and started Agriculture classes and the FFA. 2019 FFA WEEK NEWSLETTER We hope you enjoy the 2019 FFA Week Newsletter. It contains highlights of our FFA Activities from last year during February to this current FFA Week. It is put together by our FFA members and shows not only the past year’s accomplishments, but a lot of our chapter history as well as past honored adults and the history and current status of our local Agriculture and FFA Foundation. We are continuing our exchange program with Grottenhof-hardt, an agricultural school in Graz, Austria and our chapter is working to expand those ties by showing them more about how the FFA works with agriculture programs in the United States. We hosted two students from there in August of 2016 and in June of 2017, two of our members (Maverick Guenther and Ashley Walther) visited Austria.

Our FFA is the second the largest in Wisconsin with nearly 373 members and is well known locally and on the state and national levels.

Thank you to those FFA members involved in the production of the newsletter as well those advertisers who support its publication through their ads. Without that support, this newsletter could not be published.
