Staff Spotlights Kenneth Retino Business Specialist

Department: Dean’s Office Years of Service: 16 years (8 years RBS Dean’s Office, 8 years SASNB Dean’s Office) Duties: Ken is responsible for ensuring University policies and procedures for expense reports from Academic departments, centers & programs and approves when appropriate. Ken regularly communicates with departments to review and achieve familiarity, and understand of best business practices of University policies. Ken also generates financial reports for Academic departments.

Hobbies: Ken enjoys traveling and going on hikes with his family. He also enjoys attending and watching sporting events, especially his favorite NY teams (Yankees, Rangers & Knicks). He enjoys going into NYC for the museums (The Met, MOMA, The Cloisters), walking the Brooklyn Bridge and the Highline, and exploring restaurants within the five boroughs, especially ethnic foods & cuisines.

I believe finding the humanity in everyone I meet is one of my personal responsibilities. I treat everyone with respect and kindness. And I can honestly say that I have learned and acquired a great deal of skills and knowledge from those with whom I interact. I am excited to join Professor and Vice-Chair Ben Sopranzetti and the awesome team forming a diversity, inclusion and equity initiative. The Center for Women in Business (CWIB) is a community that combines the strength of academic research and the resources of a committed alumni network to make an impact on gender equity in the business world. Through education, opportunities, and thought leadership, their mission is to remove barriers, build community, and empower women with the confidence and skills necessary to succeed as business leaders. CWIB’s research mission is to also to develop actionable insight into the problem of underrepresentation of women in business. Founding Director, Lisa Kaplowitz is a Finance & Economics Assistant Professor. Research Director, Kristina Durante, is an Associate Professor in our Marketing department.

Making ‘Dough’ Rise for the 5th Annual Business Symposium On December 3rd, RBS held their 5th Annual Business Community Engagement Symposium virtually. Small/ Mid-Sized Business Challenge, Making ‘Dough’ Rise in the New Economy, included keynote speakers from PSEG, Bank of America, NJEDA, and world renowned chef, restaurateur and founder of World Central Kitchen (WCK), José Andrés. The panelists covered many approaches on “making dough rise in the new economy” by touching on states’ resources, pivoting around the crisis of COVID-19, e-commerce, tips on business bank loans and SBA’s and much more.

RBS Sends Final Exam Care Packages to Our Students In an effort to support RBS students as this most unusual semester comes to a close, RBS leadership and staff worked diligently with vendors and donors to deliver over 7,000 RBS Final Exam Boxes to remote learners in New Jersey and throughout the country. We hope these few favorite snacks, a couple of RBS-branded practical items, and well wishes from Dean Lei brightened the day for our students who have overcome so many challenges these past several months.

Thank you to all those who made this holiday care package possible, including our generous donors: Ricola, KIND, Combos and StuffedPuffs.

RBS Donates Over 3,000 Snacks Back in our May-June issue, we shared that RBS was able to make a generous donation to the Rutgers food pantries in Newark and New Brunswick, thanks to the large supply of snacks previously ordered for Dean Lei’s popular Snack Initiative. Thanks to generous donors (Ricola, KIND, Combos and StuffedPuffs) who donated snacks to the Newark and New Brunswick Food Pantries, RBS has donated over 3,000 snacks this year.

Parking Without the Gravel Lot As many RBS-NB employees already know, the Gravel Lot behind South Tower is no longer available for faculty and staff parking. Staff and Faculty may only park in the following designated areas on the Livingston Campus: Lots 101, 103, 105, 107, 108, 109, 110, 111, 112, Scarlet, and Green.

Note: The Yellow Lot is reserved for students. Most parking along Rockafeller Road is for visitors only. Do NOT park in Scarlet Lot spaces reserved for handicapped (unless you have an official handicap placard), or the RBS deans, or those spaces specifically assigned to the RWJBarnabas Health Athletic Performance Center.

HR News Virtual Mini Staff Retreat Recap On November 11th, 141 staff members from Newark and New Brunswick joined our first ever RBS Virtual Mini Staff Retreat. Prior to Dean Lei’s welcoming remarks, some staff members joined an early-bird ice-breaker session organized by Matt Peyrek. The retreat kicked off with an uplifting slideshow created by Jennifer Diaz, featuring images of our staff from last year’s staff retreat, as well as the few events we were able to celebrate on campus this year.

Senior Associate Dean Melissa Rivera kicked off the retreat, followed by Dean Lei’s comments acknowledging the important role staff members play in the continued success and global recognition of Rutgers Business School. Dean Lei also candidly responded to staff members’ questions, which were shared by Lucy Foster of Undergraduate Programs-Newark. Marc Limata of MBA Student Services, spoke to the group about the Dean’s Staff Advisory Committee and how you can utilize this influential resource to voice your thoughts and concerns to Dean Lei. Kendra Clarke of Marketing and Communications, aslo shared what the Professional Development Committee is planning for the spring semester. (Turn page for more).

Professional Development & Committee Updates Coffee & Conversations Continue On Friday morning, December 4th, RBS coworkers from both campuses met virtually for the second Coffee & Conversation social hour. Participants were able to join breakout rooms to discuss various topics of interests: Pets, TV shows, Travel, Food, Goals for 2021, and more.

This popular event drew a large crowd that enjoyed the opportunity to connect with colleagues. Based upon the positive feedback, and the extension of telecommuting through next March, RBS Coffee & Conversation will become a monthly event. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Ad Hoc Committee On November 16th, a diversity, equity and inlusion survey was shared with RBS Staff and Faculty. The purpose of this survey is to assess the current climate and resources among the faculty, staff, and students at RBS, with a goal to continuously improve our academic environment and to ensure RBS members feel a strong sense of belonging. An essential step in creating a truly diverse, equitable, supportive, and inclusive community is learning about your perspectives and experiences at RBS. The committee anticipates analyzing the data and to have recommendations to the RBS Leadership Team by the end of January.

The RBS Ad Hoc Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion includes the following staff members: Ingrid Belle (Center for Supply Chain Management), Donna Brancato (Undergraduate - NB), Charles Brown (Office of Diversity Programs) , Shyeka Hopkins (NJ-SBDC), and Josephine Sears (Executive MBA).

Getting to Know

Kendra Clarke

As this year’s Staff Excellence Award recipient, the Newsletter Committee had the opportunity to meet and speak with Kendra Clarke, Web Content Strategist for Marketing and Communications, on her experiences in and out of Rutgers Business School. During the interview, we were truly enlightened to learn that she is so much more than what meets the eye. The quiet and soft spoken person who tends to hide in the background, is also world-traveled, loves good food; and her passion and commitment to work and family is fueled by her love for life and making a change in the world. As you will see from our Q&A, Kendra Clarke is definitely a role model for both women and males to follow. We are sure we will hear her name again resounding within the halls of RBS!

When you learned you were the recipient of the Staff Excellence Award, how did you feel?

The competition in the category was pretty steep, so I really didn’t think I would be the one called. I wish I could have seen my own face when my name appeared on the presentation, but I had moved the screen on Zoom to look at the other attendees. I know my jaw dropped when Dee called my name!

Even though I doubted I would win, I was proud to be the recipient, and I know that I have worked hard to be worthy of the recognition. I’ve worked at RBS for 8 ½ years, and regardless of my position, I always went above and beyond. I was a Program Coordinator, Career Management Specialist, Part-Time Lecturer, and Acting Assistant Dean/Director in the Undergraduate-Newark Office of Career Management. In each role, I did my best to ensure that our students had the best experience possible and that they were able to realize their career goals.

In my current role as a Web Content Strategist with the Communications and Marketing team, I work closely with staff and faculty across both campuses to create webpages designed to promote the preeminence of the school, attract new students, and communicate the RBS brand. It’s been an enriching experience, and I am humbled by the acknowledgment of my efforts by my peers. Thank you again to the committee and those who nominated me!

Why did you make the career shift to go into Communications and Marketing? Marketing has always been my passion, but I never knew what I wanted to do. I started working with OCM Undergraduate Newark as my first job after graduation and learned so much that helped prepare me to transition into a marketing role. I completed my MBA while working to help build my qualifications and skillset. I was also able to make new connections and gain critical technical skills through my involvement with the American Marketing Association of New Jersey (AMA NJ). This is a professional organization of marketers.

When I saw the open position for the Web Content Strategist, it wasn’t something I had ever considered, but it felt like a great fit. It involved writing, building webpages, and was focused on the user experience as it pertains to the website. I was sold on the role but nervous about doing something I had never done before.

What helped make the final decision to apply is how great the RBS Communications and Marketing team is.

I am fortunate enough to love what I do and work with such a fantastic group of people.

Who or what inspires you and why? I am inspired to do what I do because of the generations that I can help to influence in a positive way. I attribute part of that to being the oldest of 3 children. I also mentor two young women trying to navigate college and life immediately after graduating from college. They both have dreams and goals that they want to accomplish, but what helps them have confidence is knowing someone who has done it before them, especially someone who looks like them. Young Black men and women are often looking for that role model so that they know that the things they want to achieve are possible. This inspires me to keep reaching for my dreams and goals because being able to pave a path to bring up those after me is truly rewarding.

Is there anything outside of Rutgers that you are currently working on or would like to be a part of?

I am the first female Black President of the American Marketing Association of New Jersey in its 76-year history. This is a huge accomplishment for me and something I am immensely proud of. I’ve learned to manage a team of 15+ volunteers virtually and during a pandemic, which is no easy feat. I also dance

RBS Staff Newsletter amateur salsa, which is so much fun! I started about two years ago, and I love it! The school I go to is in Newark called Smiling David’s Dance Studio.

What is your ultimate goal in life? I don’t know that I have an ultimate goal, but I would like to achieve incremental goals in the future. I want to buy a one-family house. I own a rental property, but I’d like a place of my own. I would also like to reach the Director/Manager level within two years. Eventually, I’d also like to have a family of my own. My next travel goal is to visit Japan.

How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected you? I’ve been fortunate and blessed not to have many people in my family affected health-wise, and my prayers are with those who have been negatively affected by this pandemic. One change that has really affected me is that I always feel like I’m ‘on,’ whether with RBS related work or my work with AMA New Jersey.

I’m an introvert, so socializing is not a huge necessity; however, I miss seeing people and having casual conversations. I also miss going to the movies, a restaurant, a friend’s house, salsa dancing. Overall, I truly wish we were on the other side of this, but I recognize how blessed I am to be in the position I am in and don’t take that for granted.

What is the most defining moment of your life thus far? Thus far, the most defining moment of my life happened during the Fall 2016-Spring 2017 academic year when I had what I would call one of the most challenging years of my life. At the beginning of that year, I got sick and could not go back to work for weeks. At the same time, Sarah Kosakowsi, now a Career Management Specialist, was just starting her job, and it was my job to train her. I was also taking MBA classes and needed to keep on top of that work. When I got back to work in October, I was just recovering but continued to do my best to fulfill my duties and get Sarah acclimated to RBS. The same semester, my grandfather passed away, and a week after that, I got in a car accident. I was challenged mentally, emotionally, and physically, but through all that, I realized I was only being prepared for what was next.

Following that semester, one of my colleagues took ill and was out for the entire semester. That semester, I took over for my colleague in an acting capacity. I also took on her class, Business Forum, which has about 200+ students in a semester, continued with my MBA courses, and still did my job as a Career Management Specialist. I had never experienced so many difficult situations concurrently, and it was so hard at times to keep it together. What I discovered in that time was that I had more strength than I knew, that I could get through hard times, even in the toughest circumstances. I also gained a new perspective on how short life is and how you should never take your health (mental and physical) for granted. I know that that year truly defined how I approach life today because I reference it so often, even now.

in Review Resilient, Resourceful, Responsible Reinvent yourself for the digital era

The Four R’s that help define RBS and its mission to impart business knowledge, ethical judgment, and global perspectives in our students have never been more true or more important. Every single member of the RBS Family has been forced to adapt to unexpected and unprecedented challenges, take personal responsibility for the health and safety of their families and communities like never before, and be creative and resourceful while adjusting to telecommuting, remote instruction and virtual meetings. We staff have all acquired new skills and can now Zoom, collaborate across Teams, and work from home as effortlessly as the young students we support here at RBS. Who would have thought?

Phrases like “mask mandates” and “social distancing” were unheard of a year ago, yet they are now a critical part of our health and safety protocols, at home and at RBS. None of us could have ever imagined that a year ago, which reinforces just how critical it is that we constantly explore professional development opportunities, fine tune our skillsets and remain open and prepared to meet the everchanging needs of our faculty and students, in what will likely become known as the Post-COVID Era. None of us knows what the future holds, but together, we will profess our Scarlet Pride and stay RBS-Strong.

While this has certainly been a challenging year, with the COVID-19 global pandemic impacting every aspect of our lives, there are still great accomplishments, memorable moments, and good times with colleagues to celebrate as we look ahead to 2021, a safe, effective vaccine, and a return to our more normal daily lives. Please take a few moments to pause and reflect on some of the RBS highlights from the past year. Enjoy!

Prepping Holiday Bread for Shipping Special thank you to the Dean’s Office Holiday Bread taskforce team (Brenda Anderson, Mala Bhola, Jennifer Diaz, Nancy Kiley, Monica Giron, Efi McMillian, and Melissa Rivera) for going above and beyond so that our Faculty and Staff are able to receive our annual holiday bread in time for the holiday break. The team worked tirelessly on December 21st at 1 Washington Park to construct boxes, package bread and label nearly 180 boxes. We would also like to thank staff members Laura Chacon (Marketing and Communications) , Ingrid Belle (Center for Supply Chain Management), and Monnique DeSilva (PhD in Management) for stopping by to pick up in person.

RBS Staff Newsletter Staff Shared Recipes Tres Leches Cake Shared by Lorri Layton, Program Development Specialist, Center for Real Estate Studies Ingredients: For the cake: • Veg. oil spray for misting the pan(s) • 1 package plain yellow cake mix • 1 package (about 3 oz.) vanilla instant pudding mix • 1 cup whole or low fat milk • 1 cup vegetable oil • 4 large eggs For the milk syrup and toppings: • 1 can (14 oz.) sweetened condensed milk • 1 can (12 oz.) evaporated milk • 1 cup heavy (whipping) cream

1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 cups Sweetened Whipped Cream (recipe follows) 2 cups sliced lightly sweetened strawberries (or berry mix)

For the Sweetened Whipped Cream: • 1-1/2 cups of cold heavy cream • ¼ cups confectioners’ sugar • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar • 2 tablespoons crème fraiche • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions 1.

Make the cake: Place a rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 350°F degrees.

Using the vegetable spray, lightly mist a 9x13’’ pan.

Place the cake mix, pudding mix, milk, oil, and eggs in a large mixing bowl. Beat with an electric mixer on low speed until combined, about one minute. Stop the machine and scrape down the side of the bowl with a rubber spatula. Increase the mixer speed to medium and beat until well blended, about two minutes longer, scraping down the side of the bowl again if necessary. Transfer the batter to the pan, smoothing out the top of the batter.

Bake the cake until golden brown and the top springs back when lightly pressed with a finger. The cake will be done in about 32-34 minutes. Let it cool for about an hour.

Meanwhile, make the milk syrup. Whisk together the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, cream and vanilla in a medium sized bowl. When the cake is cool, poke holes all over the top with a fork, chopsticks, or a bamboo skewer. Using a ladle or large spoon, spoon the milk syrup over the cake, using all of it. When finished, not all the syrup will be completely absorbed but that’s ok. Cover the cake loosely with plastic wrap and refrigerate until the syrup is absorbed, at least two hours or preferably overnight.

Sweetened Whipped Cream:Place the cream, confectioners’ sugar, granulated sugar, crème fraiche, and vanilla in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment. Blend at high speed until it forms soft peaks. (Note – cream goes everywhere so use either a large bowl or a cloth to cover the mixer – voice of experience )

‘Twas the Night Before Finals, RBS 2020 ‘Twas the week before finals, when all through the campus, Not a Scarlet Knight was stirring, because of the virus.

The sanitizers were hung in the lobby with care, In hopes that RBS students soon would be there.

The profs were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of virtual classes danced in their heads.

And Dean Lei at her home and Dean Mensah, his office, Had just settled their brains for a budgeting conference.

When out on the plaza, there arose many scooters, I sprang from the lounge to see no coyote invaders.

Away to the handi-wipe station I flew like a flash, Tore open an RBS Cares Box and donned a face mask.

The stock ticker in South, now with no gravel lot, To learn about Wall Street where RBS interns are taught.

When, what to my wondering thoughts should appear, But a safe vaccine promise and a reduction in fear.

I knew in a moment we are nearing the end, Far better than presents, confident parents will send, To instruct, and to guide, and to educate all; Now! Econ, now! Supply Chain, now! Alumni, please fill every hall.

On! MGB, on! Accounting, on! OCM, MBA, and Accounting, too.

Now dash away virus! COVID-19, please do be gone.

Our students we miss, oh this quarantine marathon.

With packs full of books, the students shall cram, Preparing for tests and acing exams.

With health and safety protocols all put into place, And sneeze guards and sanitizer all over our space.

As I pulled onto Rutgers, and was parking at last, Security scanned for My Campus Pass.

Down Rockefeller Road, Dean Uslay abound, And CSOs at their stations, carefully making their rounds.

IT was on duty, as they always are, Fixing computer bugs, those tech savvy stars.

Dean Rivera checking numbers and grinding her teeth, A global pandemic and financial crisis to beat.
