CONTACT WITH MORWOOD FAMILY RELATIONS

4Through Dick McCarthy’s article re the project of Australian Foresters in PNG before Independence in Una Voice, John Egerton5 , a relation of Robin Morwood made contact.

John Egerton6 was the first cadet veterinary officer to graduate and go to TPNG. He was stationed in Port Moresby at the Kila Kila Veterinary Laboratory. He started there on 4th January 1956 and stayed in the territory service until September 1964. He had several close friends in Forestry from that time such as David and Sheila Dun, Don and Barbara McIntosh, Frank Coppock, Greg and Vicki McDonald. John Egerton later became Professor of Veterinary Science at Sydney University. Currently he is editor of PNG Kundu (the magazine of the PNG Australia association)

John Egerton’s7 older brother Bill was married to Robin’s sister Nancy. Robin and John were both freshers at King’s College and shared some classes in first year uni before he went off to Canberra. John was at Robin’s wedding to Joan in Wau and recalls meeting Frank Vickery then and only a year or two later at Robin’s funeral in Lae.

Through John Egerton8 providing Norman Morwood's address, Norm 9 made available Brian Morwood’s address. Brian is Robin’s son and is of course in close contact with his mother Joan, Robin’s wife. Norm copied in their two sisters Mary and Hazel. Sadly, Hazel has since passed away. Now there are only the two of us left (Norm and Mary) from the original eight R.B. Morwood children.

EARLY DAYS

Robin Morwood10 was one of eight siblings of Roy and Ethel Morwood - Nancy, David, Robin, Peter, Lorna, Mary, Norman, Hazel. Sort of a rhythm there with all the names having 2 syllables. Roy and his brother Eric in the early 1900’s attended Toowoomba Grammar School followed by several descendants.

Morwood to Morewood?11 That "e" has been a problem for many years. It keeps appearing in written stuff. The photo is a rather scary demonstration of the problem of increasing population. Lucky, they don't all have 8 kids these days. Norm’s daughter Karen hosted a larger family "reunion" to have a non-funeral one now that Roy and Ethel's children are down from 8 to just 2 of us Unfortunately, Brian did not get here in time from Brisbane because of bad traffic on the day, but we had his son Connor Joan does not travel much these days Mary and Norm right in the middle with the blue shirts.

Morwood Clan 2022. Photo credit Norm Morwood. Mary Morwood12 recalled Robin as someone who did not always follow all the rules.

Norm Morwood’s13 recollections are limited Robin was one of the older siblings and lived in a different world. I remember fondly Robin and Joan picking me up from Toowoomba Grammar boarding school and taking me out for the day, a great break from the usual stuff. We used to camp at Mooloolaba and one year when Robin came home from “Nasho” complete with 303 rifle, we went over to Point Cartwright by canoe and did a bit of shooting. So different a time to now.

Hazel Green nee Morwood14 recalled that like Norm she did not spend a lot of time with Robin who was in the older half of the family, and any extra memories would be welcome. She does not remember about Norm’s adventures with a rifle and probably never knew. She remembers when the family went camping at Mooloolaba and there wasn't enough room in

the car. She was very jealous when you and Robin came by train, and Robin bought you a proper meat pie.

Hazel recalls that Robin did his forestry course in Canberra - was that at ANU? She had the impression he went to PNG straight after that?? It must have been round about when they returned from Fiji in 1956. She wasn't with him much when he or he and Joan came back to Australia for holidays, but she remembers he was fun to be with. Some of her information about him came from letters from their mother while she was at boarding school. Her mother mentioned going to a circus once hoping to bring a smile to Robin - did he sometimes have mild depression? I also remember her letter saying that Robin had been in hospital but was much improved and going home soon. Just after that, they came to the school and told me he had died.

Norm reports that now there is just Mary and him. Not much wrong with Mary now 83 (just passed David for longevity). Norm can still do nearly everything he wants to, including commuting by pushy, planting and maintaining a 10-acre native forest in Palmwoods.

Robin was educated at Toowoomba Grammar School and later graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Science degree.

Robin Morwood and John Egerton were both freshers at King’s College. They shared some classes in first year university before Robin went off to AFS in Canberra.

Dick Pegg15 recalls that Robin's nickname was Buckey. Dick also recalls that Robin’s brother Peter was nicknamed Pineboard. He has no clue on the reason for either.

Dick Pegg recalls that Robin16 passed the Qld senior exam in 1950 with 4 As and 3 Bs, high for a Forestry student of those days (Dick says in his year 2 A’s was the norm) In 1951, Dick recalls that Robin was a Qld. cadet or maybe scholarship holder - it was about that time that the scheme changed from a cadetship to a scholarship holder. He recalls Robin failed 2nd year in 1952 and repeated it at his own expense in 1953 after which he accepted a PNG cadetship. There were few survivors in the Forestry course at UQ at that time because of the difficulty students had in passing chemistry in either the first or second year

AUSTRALIAN TPNG FORESTRY CADETSHIP SCHEME17 1948 to 1963

After the Second World War, a cadetship scheme was undertaken by the Australian Department of Territories to train Australian Forest Scientists to ensure sufficient professional staff for the purposes of creating a functional Forest Department for TPNG.

The cadetship scheme comprised two years at an Australian university undertaking an approved forestry science course, followed by a field year in TPNG to gain practical experience in all facets of forestry, followed by two years at the Australian Forestry School in Canberra. In later years, the field work requirements were changed to include all university vacations must be spent in PNG, thus reducing the training program by one year before graduation but still meeting the condition of 12 months field work. EMPLOYMENT TPNG

In 1957 to 1961, Robin was the Forester-in-charge of Bulolo in its still formative stages and saw the plantation estate grow by some 1450 hectares to a total of 2,225 hectares.

The Commonwealth New Guinea Timbers Ltd (CNGT) plywood mill at Bulolo in the 1960’s. Behind the mill to the left is a prominent Bulolo topographic feature called the Susus. In Pidgin English translated as a woman’s breasts. The large klinkii trees were not harvested because they contained too much metal shrapnel. Allied pilots on their way back from attacking Japanese positions around Lae and Salamaua used this easily identified feature for course correction, target practice and a safe place to jettison any undelivered bombs before climbing over the gap in the Owen Stanley Ranges on their return to bases in port Moresby during WW II.

WHAT WAS YOUR OCCUPATION

Frank Vickery Forest Ranger Bulolo

Forest Ranger Bulolo

Robin’s father-in-law was Frank Tiplin Vickery. Frank was born on 9 February 1912. He joined the Australian Army in Wau on 31 January 1942. His Army number was NG 2412. He was discharged on 11th April 1946. His rank was Warrant Officer Class 2. He served in the unit ANGAU.

Early in 1944, the Australian Army decided to form under the Engineers, a unit to record the many sawmilling operations and make surveys of the forest resources, using all the advantages of operational mapping, air photos and transport facilities then available. The C.R.E. Jim McAdam of N.G. Forests was given authority to recruit as many personnel experienced in forestry as possible. Two officers of the pre-war service Mr. Cavanaugh and Mr. Vickery were recruited. The Air Force, the Navy, Malaria units, Engineers, the Infantry and Artillery all contributed with the result that there was concentration of foresters representing every state in Australia.

Frank Vickery enlisted in 1942 in Wau TPNG. His rank was Warrant Officer Class 2. The unit had come together about mid-1944 and for the next three months at Lae were out through an intensive training in recognition of New Guinea species and handling New Guinea conditions. Senior Officers of the unit closely followed the establishment of each new base to report on immediate timber supplies for operational purposes. During this time, a plan was drawn up for the survey of the timber resources of as much of the territories as possible. This survey was launched about the end of 1944 and continued till the War ended, and the units were disbanded about October 1945. One of the functions of the C.R.E. NG Forests, written in the instructions at its formation was “the maintenance of forestry records suitable for handing over to a Civilian Forest service at the appropriate time”.

Consequently, when the unit was disbanded, Mr. Vickery, by then the forest ranger at Bulolo, was left in charge of the records. He handed the records to Mr Cavanaugh, who was then the Reserve Settlement Officer, when he returned to the Islands in his civilian capacity.

He was the father-in-law of Robin Morwood (who died in 1962 in Bulolo) Robin married Franks’ daughter Joan.

22 DEATH OF ROBIN MORWOOD 29th Nov 1962 31 31 Press Articles Times Courier Wed 5th December 1962 re Death of Robin Morwood. Brian Morwood personal communication 22 March 2019.

At the time of his unfortunate death in November 1962, he had recently been promoted to becoming the Regional Forest Officer New Guinea Islands Region.

The Pacific Islands Monthly on 1 January 196332 (reported the death of Robin Morwood. Acting Principal Forest officer for the New Guinea mainland died at his home at Lae recently. He was 29. Mr Morwood, a Bachelor of Science joined the Administration in 1954 as a Cadet Forest Officer. He later attended the Australian Forestry School in Canberra where he obtained a Diploma in Forestry. In 1956, he was stationed at Wau, Bulolo, Port Moresby and finally Lae where he had been in charge of the Regional Forest Office for 14 months. Mr Morwood left a widow and a nine-month-old son Brian John.

John Egerton34 attended Robin’s funeral in Lae.

Norm Morwood recalled that 35Robin died on 29 Nov 1962. He was Mt Isa on vacation practice at the end of 3rd year at Uni learning a bit about mining engineering. Roy (Robin’s dad) contacted him and let him know and requested that he repay some money he owed him as they were going to NG. No problem to do so when working with a decent wage underground. Not sure how the money transfer was done, telegraphic transfer? Norm can’t imagine how Roy and Ethyl managed to pay for what they did education wise for their 8 children.

Hazel Green nee Morwood 36 recalled that it is interesting and good that John Egerton was at the funeral. She knew our parents went to New Guinea after they heard of his death, to be with Joan and Brian, but it seems they were too late for the funeral? She was 16 at the time, so thinks it was in 1962

37Roslyn Godlee recalls that although she did not know the Morwoods, but sometime after Robin's death, Joan returned to Lae to arrange for a headstone to be placed on his grave. When Roslyn heard, she was coming to P.N.G. she invited her to come to Bulolo as their guest which also meant staying in the house, she and Robin had lived in. At the time of Robin's death their son Brian was 9 months old.

The Godlees were delighted she came. John had known her prior to her marriage as she was the daughter of Frank Vickery, a Forest Ranger working under Jim Cavanagh in Bulolo.

There was controversy over the headstone as Joan wanted the rock with a plaque arranged by the Forestry Department However, Robin's family wanted a formal headstone. As this all happened approximately 50 years ago Roslyn is not sure of the final decision.

Joan stayed for approximately a week, and they became good friends. Joan remarried to Tony Greensitt. They had two daughters Ruth and Lydia both of whom are now married with children. Joan visited the Godlees at their home in Wahroonga with the girls after Godlees had left P.N.G. in 1980.

Sadly, Joan’s husband died in 2000 from cancer.

38Dick Pegg (AFS 1956/1957 years) recalled memories of Robin Morwood reasonably well as he was a year ahead of him and originally from Queensland.

Several years later (probably about 1968), Dick met Robin’s wife Joan who was a parent accompanying primary school students on a field visit to the forest research station at Beerwah.

Fittingly, Brian Morwood39 is now the Team Leader Customer Service Tingalpa Queensland for DINDAS Australia. From humble family beginnings more than 60 years ago, Dindas Australia has grown into a leading distributor in the Engineered Wood Products Industry.

Brian Morwood40 acknowledged the efforts of everyone for all the information on his Dad. His mother Joan has located more information on Robin and mentioned that her father Frank Vickery was involved in New Guinea forestry.

Norm Morwood41responded to Brian re the newspaper cuttings on Robin that brought a few tears. Very interesting. Does anyone know something about the Annual prize? Does it still exist? Any info on contacts that might provide info?

Dick McCarthy42 forwarded the draft PNGAF magazine to Brian on his father Robin. Fancy your mother Joan meeting Dick Pegg all those years later in Qld. Dick Pegg is still alive and was a year behind your dad at AFS.

Brian responded that his mother was very excited and talked about her time with Robin and how proud she was of him. His mother’s second married name was Greensitt. Brian reported that for his mother Joan, it brought back many memories for her She remembered every person mentioned in the article. Dick McCarthy responded that everyone was delighted that we could bring good memories back in what must have been a very sad time for your Mum.

Brian Morwood43 advised bush editor Dick McCarthy re draft PNGAF mag to go ahead as a very interesting read.

1973 Bulolo Forestry College Graduation Programme

33

In 2019, senior Papua New Guinean foresters as Kanawi Pouru47 former Managing Director of NFS, Dr Ruth Turia, NS and UNITECH Forestry heads as Cossey Yosi, Prof Osia Gideon and Eko Maiguo were advised of the project and the write up of the Robin Morwood Memorial Trust awards by Dick McCarthy48 .

Kanawi Pouru advised that in the Bulolo Forestry College in the staff room building there is a wall with displays of names as Robin Morwood and Lane Poole etc. Kanawai cannot clearly recall the awarding of the Robin Morwood Award during his BFC student years of 19731975. However, he vaguely recalls some kind of leadership award was given to Kule-en Hamou (SRC President) in 1975 graduation.

The Principal of Bulolo Forestry College Eko Maiguo49 advised that he had gone through some old documents of the institution and found information on the Robin Morwood Memorial Prize. These showed that the Robin Morwood Memorial Prize was awarded to the best student in the year three of Forestry Diploma Program at the annual graduation ceremony. We have to do it again starting next year (2020).

Eko Maiguo50, the Principal Bulolo Forestry College Bulolo advised that Bulolo Forestry College will be awarding the Robin Morwood Memorial Prize to the best student of the threeyear forestry diploma course in 2020.

Dick McCarthy responded to Eko that it is most pleasing to hear that he will be awarding the Robin Morwood Memorial Prize to the best student of the three-year Forestry Diploma Program.

A follow by Dick McCarthy51 in 2022, to all players including Eko Maiguo, Dr Ruth Turia, Kanawai Pouru, Dr Cossey Yosi, Michael Pearson, Kulala Mulung, and Ken Mondai. During your times involved with BFC, do you recall the Robin Morwood award? It did exist in 1973 - I was there.

Eko Maiguo responded that Bulolo University College will begin awarding the Robin Morwood’ prize to a best student in the final of the program starting in the 2023 graduation ceremony. The graduation ceremonies at Unitech in the past two years were disturbed by covid-19 so we were not able to award this prize.

For your information, Bulolo University College will commence offering Bachelor of Forest Management (BFM) degree in 2023 and the first batch of successful students will graduate in 2027. This Degree program will replace the stand-alone Forestry Diploma which started in the 1970s.

Kulala Mulung52(former head Dept Of Forestry UNITECH Lae and now Deputy Managing Director, PNG Science and Technology Council Secretariat, Port Moresby) responded that he

is not sure if Forestry Department at Unitech and BUC do continue to honour the invaluable contributions by eminent leaders in forestry education and leadership by awarding students of exceptional standing and performance with such awards. It certainly is a noble and honourable cause and need to maintain such.

During his time as the head of Unitech Forestry Department, he created a Trust Fund called "John Simaga Award" from the money he earned through doing consultancy work. He authorised UDC an amount of K5000.00 as a seed capital to be deposited into that fund with the aim of ploughing back the profits toward student who performed well in dendrology and botany subject at the end of each academic year. The funds were administered and managed by the PNG Unitech Student Affairs Department by Mr Primus Dam, Senior Assistant Register who was tasked with this job. Mr Maiguo, current Principle of BUC remembers this well. Many of our ex-students were recipients of John Simaga award.

Kulala was planning to do the same in recognition of unparallel services by Professor Robert Bob Jones, Mr Kanawi Pouru, Mr Gabriel Samol and Dr Ruth Turia. Dr Ruth Turia was among the first Papua New Guinea female foresters to venture into male dominated field and had against all odds toiled and climbed in forestry ranks with admiration and respect to highest post in the Forestry Management

Coming back to the question of Robin Morwood There was such an award given to students graduating with diploma when I was there. Thank you, Dick McCarthy, for the continued support and interest to see forestry profession and the sector in PNG grow out of its current form and shape.

Dick McCarthy53 congratulated all PNG foresters on their continuing work in developing a sustainable forest management regime for PNG. Excellent work everyone. Remember that you have a vast supportive alumnus behind you comprising associated TPNG and PNG foresters past and present together with other lecturing staff to continually further your sustainable forestry training initiatives. The institution needs to make continual use of them. This makes the historical write up of Robin Morwood award more important.

Cossey Yosi54 responded that he joined Unitech in 2017/2018 and had been given the role of HOD here at the Taraka campus in 2020 but he had not heard or sighted any information about the Robin Morwood Award for the best Year 3 student at the Bulolo PNG Forestry College (now BUC) until just this year (2022), when BUC Principal Mr. Eko Maiguo briefed him.

However, it has been recorded that Forestry Training in PNG goes back in history and this is because of very brave men and women (Foresters) of the likes of Robin Morwood who have dedicated their lives in the past in the Forestry profession. It is good to let this legacy live on in the form of this award (Robin Morwood). Please let me know if there is anything I could do to ensure that the Robin Morwood Award continues at our Bulolo campus.
