Tropical Pinus spp. can thrive where available nitrogen is scarce if mycorrhiza is present and they are resistant to grass fires, but the wood they produce is used for utility purposes and must be produced at low cost to compete as pulp and building timber with imports from natural coniferous forests in temperate and subtropical regions. more cheaply than any hardwood if soil nutrients are deficient.
