Action for Learning We believe that it is vital that you understand how we assess the quality of your work and recommend actions for you to take to achieve higher standards.

Throughout the year you will be formally assessed against the exam board standards through Fit for Purpose assessment pieces. This will involve specific pieces of work from each subject and will be marked according to the relevant level. This will give you a good indication of the level you are working at.

Rivington and Blackrod High School does not tolerate actions of malpractice by its students/learners.

Copying material/text from the work of another student, from published sources and/or from the Internet without proper documentation constitutes academic theft.

Plagiarism is "...to take the work or idea of someone else and pretend it is your own" (Oxford English Dictionary).

You must ensure that all your work is your own.

The following are examples of such malpractice: • Copying and passing off, as the students’ own, the whole or part(s) of another person’s work, with or

without permission and without appropriately acknowledging the source.

• Working with other student(s) to produce work that is submitted as individual student work.

• Pretending to be someone else in order to produce the work for another or arranging for another to take

one’s place in an assessment/examination/test.

• Failing to abide by the instructions or advice of an assessor • Misuse of assessment/examination material • Use of unauthorised material in assessment/examination/test conditions • The alteration of any results document, including certificates • Cheating to gain an unfair advantage

EXTERNAL EXAMINATIONS We are required to submit our entries to the various Examining Boards for external examinations at different times within the year. We send out forms giving details of the examination entries which have been recommended by subject tutors for your son/ daughter.

We wish to emphasise at this stage the responsibility which is undertaken by a student entered for examination and would draw your attention to the following:1. Absence from the Examination, without a medical certificate from a Doctor, will incur the payment of the subject fee.

2.

A student who is entered for examinations and who subsequently leaves the school prior to the examinations is expected to return to school for the paper or to pay the subject fee incurred. They are also expected to wear school uniform when in school to sit examinations.

3. The school reserves the right to withdraw any candidate who in subsequent months proves to be unsatisfactory in classwork, homework, punctuality and regular attendance at school.

4. It should be noted that in most G.C.S.E. subjects, coursework is an integral part of the examination. Failure to complete coursework satisfactorily, automatically disqualify pupils from obtaining a grade in the examinations.

N.B. Morning examinations will start at 9.00 a.m. - Afternoon examinations will start at 1.30 p.m.

These points need discussing with your parents and the entry forms completed as follows:(a) If you agree with all entries shown, simply sign the form and return it to school as soon as possible. (b) If you believe there to be an error in your entries you should see Mr Stanley immediately and this will be rectified.

(c) Late changes to entries may involve a cost.

The group has representatives from all year groups and there is an opportunity each March for new students to apply to join. They chair the group themselves and meet once a fortnight. They find out what the student perspective or ‘voice’ is and then work on ideas with adults to continuously try and improve our school community.

School Closure In the case of severe weather or any unforeseen disaster the school MAY have to close.

There is a common procedure for such an eventuality.

If you are worried prior to the start of the school that it may not be safe for your child to attend do not send them in.

Tune into Real Radio (105.4 F.M.) or Smooth Radio (100.4 F.M.) for their half hourly news bulletins.

If the Head Teacher decides before school opens that it would be unsafe for parents to send their son/daughters into school then this information will be posted with the above news stations. A text message via Call Parents will be sent and information posted on the school website. Unless there is a notice to this affect the school will be open.

If the Head Teacher makes the decision to close the school early during school hours for any unforeseen circumstances then the school will consult your response. If you have given a signed permission to allow your son/daughter to leave the premises and make their way home they will be released to do so. If you wish us to keep your son/ daughter on the premises until further arrangements can be made to get him/her home safely we will do that.

MOBILE PHONE PROTOCOL Student Name _________________________________________ Form _________ Students who wish to bring a mobile phone to school must abide by the following rules: Mobile phones must not been seen in any school building (including earphones).  Mobile phones must be turned off during lessons.  If a phone is seen or heard in any school building it will be confiscated. The student will receive a letter which requires parental/carer signature and an email/text will be sent home. Phones can be collected at 3.15 p.m. on receipt of the above letter.  If the phone is confiscated for a second time a letter and email / text will be sent home requesting parental collection.  Phones may not be used in lessons as calculators.  Phone must be handed in and switched off in examination rooms.  Phones may not be used in lessons for music playing.  Students found abusing the use of a phone (e.g. sending threatening text messages) will be banned from bringing a phone to school.  Students may use phones at breaks and lunch times OUTSIDE the school buildings.  The Headteacher’s decision on all matters of mobile phone protocol is final.

Optional Summer Uniform – After Easter 2011

Blazers optional for all BOYS: Tie optional providing new style regulation shirt with embroidered logo is worn

All students must wear the specified uniform with names clearly marked in each item.

In addition to the above clothing requirements: • There is a NO jewellery policy, except for a watch • Body piercing and adornment of any form is NOT permitted – students will be required to remove the non-uniform item.

• Minimal natural looking make up is allowed. NO eye make up. NO coloured lipstick – NO fake tan/orange faces.

• ONLY clear colourless nail polish may be worn, NO acrylic OR false nails allowed • Trainers, non-school affiliated hooded tops, caps and hats must not be worn.

• Ipods/MP3s must not be brought into school • Mobile phones must be switched off, and out of sight (including ear-phones) in all school buildings – if a student uses a mobile phone in a school building or lesson, it will be confiscated.

• Hair may be coloured in more than one matching natural shade but NO creative block or contrasting colours. NO extreme styles e.g. including eyebrows tram lines, Mohican, shaving.

What will happen if your child chooses not to follow all parts of the uniform regulations?

Consequences: If your child does not comply with all parts of the uniform regulations, he/ she will be given the chance to ‘get it right’, failing that your child will be choosing to work in isolation or if this non-compliance persists your child is likely to be sent home.

In case of jewellery, caps, hooded tops, MP3 players etc. these will be confiscated and held in the main school office until an email / text letter from the parent/carer is received at the main office requesting the return of the item. However, parents/guardians of persistent offenders will be asked to collect the offending item in person.

Each individual student must accept responsibility for their own personal possessions and equipment whilst on the school site. Students should avoid bringing valuable items into school.

The school will not be held responsible for any item of uniform or equipment lost or stolen in school.

A SURVIVAL GUIDE What do I do if..........?

I am ill or injured in school

In class, tell the teacher. At break lunchtime, go to the tutor room. The tutor room will contact home, if necessary, and parents/carers must make provision for you to be collected within reasonable time constraints.

SCHOOL CLOSURE In the case of severe weather or any unforeseen disaster the school MAY have to close. There is a common procedure for such an eventuality.

If you are worried prior to the start of the school that it may not be safe for your child to attend do not send them in.

Tune into Real Radio (105.4 F.M.) or Smooth Radio (100.4 F.M.) for their half hourly news bulletins.

If the Head Teacher decides before school opens that it would be unsafe for parents to send their son/daughters into school then this information will be posted with the above news stations. A text message via Call Parents will be sent and information posted on the school website. Unless there is a notice to this affect the school will be open.

If the Head Teacher makes the decision to close the school early during school hours for any unforeseen circumstances then the school will consult your response. If you have given a signed permission to allow your son/daughter to leave the premises and make their way home they will be released to do so. If you wish us to keep your son/ daughter on the premises until further arrangements can be made to get him/her home safely we will do that.
