WELCOME

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF SIXTH FORM Teaching is particularly strong in the Sixth Form. Students develop a strong commitment to their studies and they learn to study independently because of the guidance and encouragement they receive from teachers. 01

OFSTED

I am delighted to welcome you to Rivington and Blackrod Sixth Form and we are pleased that you are considering joining us for the next stage in your educational career. The mix of highly effective teaching and learning, coupled with individual guidance and support, makes our sixth form a very special place. Teaching in the sixth form is strong and our students are noted for their academic achievements, achieving grades beyond the national norm. Many of our students progress onto university. This is the result of their commitment and hard work, the support they receive from home and the expertise, dedication and inspiration of Rivington and Blackrod staff who nurture

each student to success. Rivington and Blackrod Sixth Form is a well-established school sixth form of around 320 students, situated in Horwich. In our recent OFSTED inspection the sixth form was praised for our system of pastoral support, monitoring the work ethos of students, and the high quality of learning and teaching. Most subjects are based in the recently refurbished sixth form centre, where students have access to excellent facilities which include a dedicated post 16 study area, personal study pods and a sixth form bistro serving hot and cold meals throughout the day.

The sixth form is open to all students, not only from the school itself, but also from schools across Bolton and Chorley. Our reputation for high academic standards and excellent support make us a popular choice for students seeking good quality teaching in small groups. We offer a high level of support for all students, with a personal tutor along with a very wide range of enrichment activities. We have a very clear ethos in our sixth form which puts the student at the centre of everything we do. Our key aim is to ensure each student goes on to fulfil their potential. We work with each student personally to enable them to raise their aspirations, and achieve their goals. Rivington and Blackrod is, above all, a happy and inclusive sixth form; a place

where students work hard and where they find friendship, enrichment and support. We are confident that each student who comes to us will be well prepared for the exciting challenges of the 21st Century. For a summary of the courses that are on offer at Rivington and Blackrod Sixth Form, or through our partners in the local area, please visit the UCAS Progress website. Thank you for your interest in the sixth form at Rivington and Blackrod. We look forward to meeting you, welcome you to visit us, and hope to work with you over two of the most exciting years of your life. Paul Canning Director of Sixth Form

ON ROUTE TO A SUCCESSFUL CAREER Teaching is particularly strong in the Sixth Form. OFSTED

During year 12, it is important to take time to research your future education and career choices. You may think it is too early to do this but university applications are made in September/October of your second year, when you will be busy with year 13 studies and have limited time for research. These are important decisions which you need to take seriously. Give these decisions the time and thought they deserve since they will have a major effect on your later life. We are happy to help you with this process to assist you in your journey and our commitment to developing a wider educational experience ensures students are very successful in their

university or employment applications. To help to adjust to life at university, we have a comprehensive university preparation programme and visiting speakers from the business world help students to prepare for their future careers. We provide you with opportunities to attend higher education conferences, careers interviews, mentoring, and university open day visits.
