9th November 2024 Kick Off 3.00pm — 2024/25 Season Regional 1 South Central
On this day in the middle of the Autumn Internationals we welcome Bracknell RFC to the Coolhurst Ground, the home of Horsham RFC. This will be our third match against them. We have yet to win but games have been close, exciting and well fought.
Rugby fully on the agenda now with the match between England and New Zealand last weekend. What a game, and so close! Don’t know about you but I thought England needed another short run from the forwards so that the ball could have been delivered to Ford slightly less shakily, and we could have pipped it. The standard of rugby, both in the Premiership and at international level has been exceptional recently. So great to watch.
Next it’s Australia. We’ll be expected to win but few internationals are ever a walk-over, as we know from past encounters with these guys. Bracknell Rugby Football Club was founded in 1955, by a handful of Welsh and Cornish rugby devotees in search of game, who were attracted to the emerging new town. They are probably the youngest clubs we have played!
‘Early in 1958, the club acquired its first club house on the edge of the old bricks works at Eastern Road and the use of Lily Hill Park, which for the first season, the club often shared with the cattle from the adjacent fields. Front Rows would often have a birds eye view of a freshly sown cow pat and there was never any wilful collapsing of the scrum!’ A huge difference to the lovely site they now play on.
Another advert for Walking Rugby. Monday night at 5.45pm, under floodlights. Fun and camaraderie, you have to give it a try…..
Have a great day, one and all.
Alan Fisher President, Horsham RUFC
With a 1/3 of the season now behind us, we welcome Bracknell to Coolhurst for round 8 of the league. Bracknell sit in 7th in the league table, just above ourselves in 9th, separated by 4 points. Both teams will be pushing hard for a win this afternoon as we battle to put some daylight between our respective teams and the foot of the table.
Bracknell lost to Old Alleynians last time out in what looked like a tough contest and will no doubt be keen to get back on track. A large set of forwards with a well drilled lineout operation alongside some hard running backs marshalled by two experienced half backs mean a stern test is in store for Horsham this afternoon.
For our part, we were disappointed to come away with nothing against CS Stags last time out, particularly given the dominance in territory and possession as well as the opportunities created. This afternoon is an opportunity to turn a page on that and push hard for a win. We welcome back Tom Johnson, Jack Osgood and Nick Bell into the squad who all add much needed quality and experience into the side to blend nicely with the exuberant youngsters. With training in the week having gone well, the boys are keen to put in a performance.
For the 3rd time this season, we field 4 men’s teams with the 3rd and 4th teams playing on adjacent pitches and our 2nd XV away in London. With the bar likely to be packed and a good afternoon of community rugby ahead, I hope you enjoy the day.

Bracknell Rugby Football Club was founded in 1955, by a handful of Welsh and Cornish rugby devotees in search of game, who were attracted to the emerging new town.
The clubs first ever game was against Redingensians.
Early in 1958, the club acquired its first club house on the edge of the old bricks works at Eastern Road and the use of Lily Hill Park, which for the first season, the club often shared with the cattle from the adjacent fields.
In September 1972 the club opened its brand-new clubhouse. The President of the RFU Dudley Kemp opened the new facility and a match was played between a club XV and an invitation XV including a number of internationals The clubhouse was built with financial support from the RFU, Sports Council and Courage Brewery on land supplied by Bracknell Development Corporation in exchange for the site of the previous brick-built clubhouse on Eastern Road.
In euphoria that overtook the club with the opening of its new headquarters, one sad point was missed. The pitches had been re-laid by the Development Corporation, were constructed of the worst possible material and since 1972 have been a thorn in the side for the club.
In 1980 and again in 1989 the Club extended its facilities increasing the size of the clubhouse by 50%, installing and upgrading its gym facilities and upgrading its floodlights.
During the 80s the club gained an enviable record for touring, going to places such as the USA (1980), Canada (1984) and the Far East (1987). Not to mention the odd Easter ‘Misfits tour’ to Guernsey and Jersey. The number of teams had increased to seven sides including the Bulls and the mini and junior sections flourished, with the club running teams at every age group from u17 to u8.
The club is where in 1983 a five year old local lad, Lewis Walton Moody (MBE) started playing rugby. He played at Bracknell until 12 years old.
In 1987 the RFU introduced the first national league system, Bracknell starting life in the leagues in Southern Counties (level 7), which Bracknell were immediately relegated from! They gained promotion back to Southern Counties a season later.
The club played host and training base to Zimbabwe at the start of their 1991 World Cup campaign. We have since hosted a number of touring sides such as NZ and Australia.
In 1991 the club undertook their first tour to Africa, when they toured Kenya, under the captaincy of legendary tourist Maurice Rocks. Bracknell defeated Kenya 14-17 in the final game of the tour.
Arrival of ‘The Judge’.
In 1991 the club took a momentous decision (much to the amusement of its local rivals) to employ a full-time coach (to be renamed the Director of Rugby) whilst in the Berks, Dorset and Wilts leagues, and appointed former England and Wasps prop Paul ‘The Judge’ Rendall. The tenure of Paul Rendall probably had the greatest impact at the Club (in playing terms in any event) in its history.
This appointment seemed to have an immediate effect as in the 1991-92 season the club went all the way to the semi-final of the National Junior Cup, losing to Bradford Salem at the then Nottingham RFC’s ground, Beeston, just missing out on a final at Twickenham. In 1992/3 the club, gained promotion to Southern Counties.
The season 1995/96 started with the clubs second tour to Africa when they toured Zimbabwe, remaining unbeaten on tour. Later that season with the club already having gained promotion from Southern Counties, the club secured its first Berkshire Cup defeating Maidenhead 22-21 at Lily Hill with a try from ex-Wasps and England centre Rob Lozowski securing the victory.
The years 1997-1999, saw a steadily climb into National Division Three (South). The club gaining promotion from National Division Three (South) to National League Two in the 1998/99 season and in doing so set a club record (and at the time an English league record) of 53 home consecutive league wins!!
This period also saw the clubs Ladies team formed in January 1999. After a season of ‘fun’ friendly games, January 2000 saw the Ladies play their first full game and to go on and take part in their first competitive season in the Merit League in 2001.
The 2000/01 season saw the Club, under the leadership of Simon Shaw, win National League Two. With promotion to National League One the Club improved the spectator facilities with the erection of a stand and the construction of a path around the pitch. The club was also honoured with a Civic Reception given by Bracknell Forest Borough Council.
Playing in National One in the 2001/02 season, few will forget beating Coventry at Lily Hill, a game that saw Greg Anstead’s fabled tackle on ex-All Black Zinzan Brook! Playing other such distinguished clubs as Moseley, Exeter, Rugby, Bedford, Rotherham, Worcester, Otley and London Welsh to name but a few.
A new era dawns.
Sadly the clubs dream of playing rugby in National One did not last long. The Club had grown up too fast and was not ready for the rigours that awaited it. With relegation to National Two the club underwent a year of consolidation within National Two but the club still had ambitions to move upwards and with the appointment of new full time Director of Rugby this looked possible. However the elusive dream was not in the making and another frustrating and disappointing period resulted in a tough fight to the last game of the season to stay in the league, but the club was relegated to National 3 South.
The 2005/06 season saw the Club back in National 3 South and a realisation that the Club had gone back to its roots and appointed local coaches Jamie Turner and Greg Anstead for a locally sought team. To start the season required recruitment of nearly a whole new team, and the coaches rose to the challenge. However, despite their efforts the new team didn’t manage to win as many matches as required to maintain status at this level.
Chris Sheasby joins.
The club started the 2006/07 Season in South West 1 and after losing 6 of its opening match’s the decision was made to appoint Chris Sheasby, (ex England, London Irish and Harlequins) as player coach. Sheasby’s appointment led to the club retaining its league position by winning 8 out of 10 matches in the second half of the season. The season saw the club also pick up the Berkshire Cup beating Maidenhead 51-14 at Lily Hill Park.
The 2007/8 season promised much and Bracknell led the South West Div 1 league for much of the season but were eventually seen off by Chinnor the champions and also by Worthing (18-5) in the promotion play off. Further disappointment was defeat (12-16) in the semi-final of the National Intermediate Cup at Lily Hill to Birkenhead Park, when the dream of a Twickenham final beckoned...again!
2008/09 season saw yet more disappointment in the play-offs. Finishing runners-up in the league to Clifton, the club lost in the promotion play off to Barnes, 39-18. The club did experience some success this season, with the club winning the Berkshire Cup, defeating Redingensians at their Old Bath Road Ground, 22-41.
The 2009/10 season saw a move to the London division with the club playing in National League 3 (London Division) for the first time and going on to finish in third spot behind Jersey and Old Albanians. The club retained the Berkshire Cup defeating Broadmoor Staff 77-13 in the final.
With relegation the season before, the club had moved back to the South West division and started the 2012/13 season in South West League Division One (East). The club had also appointed Rory Greenslade-Jones as club coach. This was clearly an inspired appointment by the club as the 1XV went on to win the South West League Division One (East) and gain promotion at the first attempt.
August 2013 saw the club complete improvements to its changing facilities and disabled access following grants from the National Lottery via Sport England, Rugby Football Federation, and Bracknell Forest Council.
The 2014/15 season saw the season start on a happy note as the club president Jonathan Dance, was elected RFU President at the RFU’s annual general meeting in July 2014. Sadly our Ladies team folded due to lack of numbers.
The 2017/18 season finished with the 1XV finishing a creditable fifth in the newly named SW Premier. The Ladies first league season saw them finish in third spot and ending the season with a quick tour to Spain and in their second full season won Women’s NC South East 3 in 2018/19.
