About Me

To anyone who would be reading this portfolio, I hope you have fun and enjoy the fantastic nostalgic ride.

As you know, I am Razil or Rj if you cannot pronounce my first name that well. I am a 90s baby, a millennial, as some would say. I grew up with Pokemon, Digimon, Cartoon Network, Mr. Bean, and Nickelodeon. Every 90s baby would at least mention these popular shows in the late 90s and early 2000s.

Besides graphic design, I practice illustration in my free time. I love the works of E.H. Shepard, Ken Sugimori, and Tony DiTerlizzi. All these fantastic illustrators inspired me to have a degree in Fine Arts.

I wanted this portfolio to be memorable because this year celebrates my tenth year as a graduate of the College of Fine Arts of the University of the Philippines, Diliman.

Foreword

Some things would take time. This portfolio reminded me to appreciate all my mistakes and failures as I embark on a new phase of my life.

Chapter I

I’m Still Thinking

Every Step is Progress

Every step is progress, no matter how wrong or right our actions can be. Being part of an industry full of competitiveness, energy, and vibrancy, I only need to stop for a while and think.

This chapter is about my early days in the industry. I was nervous and scared and did not have enough savings to visit different offices around Metro Manila.

I could feel the sun’s heat while walking to get to my first interview. I had 150 pesos left in my pocket for lunch and commuting. Unfortunately, I did not get the job.I was frustrated. I still got up and submitted resumes to other companies. Eventually, I met fantastic colleagues and bosses who taught me the skills I still am proud of now.

I was fortunate enough to get a job full-time with my college friends, in a publishing and printing company, and with an international client.

Cup O’ Corn

Cup ‘O Corn is a traditional Filipino corn food adding coconut shavings and more flavors to make the all-time favorite Filipino snack more delightful and fun. This was created during my college entrepreneurial project, built from sketches to photographs.

Final Thesis Production

My final production design for my subject Visual Communication 200 class. I had the chance to prove that your childhood heroes are your best allies. I am a big fan of the EraserHeads even though I was not old enough when they were popular in my country.

FairPrice Ads

I had the chance to work with Singapore’s biggest supermarket, the NTUC FairPrice. I designed posters that have been published around the markets. The sign started from a pitching proposal entitled ‘Abandoned.’ After months of waiting, the proposal was chosen, and posters were designed.

Ice Cream Counter Tops

These were designed for Selecta’s countertops for different supermarkets in the Philippines. It was also one of my first few printed outputs for the food industry.

One of the first projects I handled from the start until finishing touch. Black Mineral is a company partnered with ASMC; its main business is mining and coal products.

Linxens Notebook Design

One of the few office collaterals that I designed for many Singaporean companies that I have worked with, one was Linxens.

Illustrations

I have drawn these illustrations to practice my digital art. All illustrations were made using ProCreate app. My art style has light, pastel colors with a sketchy outline. This year, I shared these on my portfolio to remind myself how I love telling stories through my drawings.

Dandelion Chapter II

The warmth of perseverance

A failure is not a loss but merely winning with progress. A year of hurdles and hard work made me appreciate everything—from small to big.

Just like a dandelion that can be easily blown away by the wind yet still blooms else where vibrantly.

It was the first time I broke the monotony of my life. I applied to a restaurant company that made me realize all the things I most wanted to have in the future. I got to build office designs from scratch and went to a professional to seek help with career and personal problems. And, importantly, I started appreciating the small achievements in my life. It was also the chapter of my life where I met the people I thought would be there with me in better and bad times.

Vikings Venue: All Celebrations in One.

This was my first campaign ad for Vikings restaurant, specifically Vikings Venue. A new branch from Vikings Luxury Buffet that serves loyal customers a complete experience for different occasions in just one place!

I am Vikings

“I am Vikings” was a collaboration campaign between Nikon and Vikings Luxury Buffet to inspire and enhance creativity. The mechanics included creating videos and sharing their personal experience eating with Vikings while taking beautiful shots using Nikon.

We had several partnerships in Vikings, but one memorable was Earth Hour. It was fun to create this ad because it was also the first time we had many impressions of it.

Special Ads

These particular ads were my favorite among all my works during my stay at Vikings Luxury Buffet. One was for our Chocolate Month; I proposed to call it Dome of NIU for graduation, a father’s special for NIU, and Four Seasons Hotpot Buffet.

Colors in Me Chapter III

Open the world with differences

Differences can make our world vibrant and meaningful. Judging something without even trying was something I had to overcome in the past year. Experiencing what I thought was not enough made me an even better person. Bad things are not always harmful but something you need to embrace to see the brighter side of yourself.

Probably the most chill stage of my life because everything was slow, because I took time to savor each moment. It was also the year I got a job requiring me to go to the office as early as 6 in the morning! It was a delight to be part of this company as a morning person.

I met my friends here, who I traveled with, shared goals and plans in our lives. They inspired me to go beyond and trust my guts.

Willow Recruitment Ads

My first work was to rebrand Willow Recruitment into a soft and animated recruitment business. To enhance Willow Recruitment’s rebranding. We came up with blog ads educating our loyal customers about GDPR.

Social Media Postings

One of my tasks for Offshore Intelligence was to create social media postings. I made daily social media postings for every company that I worked with. One of them was to develop tips to improve yourself.

GDPR Postings

Continuing the social media postings, I have also created a series of posts about GDPR in the Philippines. It was for my client, Offshore Intelligence.

Christmas Countdown Posts

One of my favorite social media postings I did was a Christmas countdown for my client, Offshore Intelligence. I had the opportunity to create at least 30 days of the countdown with New Year’s Eve as well.

Get Fit Ads

I created a series of campaign ads for my client, Get Fit 24/7. I also had the chance to propose a tagline for the company and successfully got it. The slogan was “Don’t quit. Get fit.” It has been used in all materials until today. I created social media ads and banners.

Hiraya Chapter IV Trust Yourself

Trust. This a common word we hear when we meet a new person, buy a high-end item, or even see a cute puppy. How we gauge our connection to certain events can change our lives. Let me take you to the world of Hiraya.

The recent out of all three significant portfolios I created. Hiraya has been one of my favorites so far because it was made out of motivation to improve, not just for another job. The portfolio was also my first portfolio with a Tagalog title.

This chapter of my life was about appreciating myself and the failures I overcame through the pandemic. Many new skills formed during the years I worked from home, and now I am ready to share them in a new journey of my life.

SketchUp Mockups

Initially, SketchUp was different from my forte. But thanks to TEAM Agency, I learned a few basic skills, allowing me to create simple models. I designed the artworks and models for CPS’ exhibit stands and recycle bin.

B2B Campaign Ads

This was an unexpected opportunity to create advertising promotions for a B2B setup. I am glad that SMENCO decided to open its doors for more fun and creative ways of promoting its products.

Thank You

It was the best feeling I had ever felt when I finished this portfolio. All the memories from ten years ago came back, and it was good to remember those sweet, simple, but challenging phases of my life. I would not be here without the experiences and the people I encountered while navigating my teenage to adult life.

And to my sister, who helped me shoot my teaser and main videos at the University of the Philippines, Diliman. It was great to be back from where it all started, and it also felt good to share all the good and bad memories with my sister, who, in the next few years, would be a college student as well.

And also for my forever friends who proofread all the write-ups and my ideas before I actually posted and put them in my portfolio. I am forever grateful to all of you!

While writing this whole portfolio, I could not stop being happy and sad at the same time. Time just flew fast like that. I was just walking under the sun’s heat while wearing a suit. I am still doing it but leisurely. I am forever grateful. I fear what’s next, but if I did it in my twenties, I would definitely do it in my thirties. Cheers to the next adventures!

Thank you so much for reading this portfolio. Let’s see each other again soon!

Afterword

A little late in life does not mean you are a failure. Feel free to stop and think for a while, persevere, open your eyes to a broader perspective, and remember to trust yourself.
