Allow us to take you through the compelling reasons why Whakatane land should be the ultimate choice for a Lifestyle Retirement Village.
The Bay of Plenty’s warm, sunny climate and proximity to main centres makes this region New Zealand’s most popular retirement destination. Breathtaking coastal views, tranquil rivers, and lush greenery. Whakatane boasts a remarkable backdrop of stunning landscapes, providing residents with a rejuvenating environment that enhances their overall well-being.
With a mild climate year-round, Whakatane is an outdoor enthusiast's paradise. Seniors will relish the opportunity to enjoy a range of activities such as fishing, boating, hiking, and golfing in the region's temperate climate. Walking and cycling the riverside or coastal paths are popular pastimes. The abundance of recreational options ensures an active and fulfilling lifestyle for residents
Whakatane is conveniently located within easy reach of major cities like Tauranga and Rotorua, ensuring accessibility for family visits and specialized services. The Whakatane Airport also provides hasslefree connections for those wishing to explore other parts of New Zealand or internationally.
Whakatāne has a charming town centre, nestled between a scenic riverside walkway and spectacular, bush-clad cliffs In its busy shopping precinct, numerous boutiques and specialty stores line an attractive, tree-lined main street studded with cafes and restaurants.
Nearby Ōhope has a great gallery and boutique shops, along with plenty of places to stop for a bite to eat. Most of the town’s national chain stores are located at ‘The Hub’, a shopping centre specifically built for this purpose, on the outskirts of Whakatāne township.
Whakatane embraces a warm and welcoming community that cherishes its residents. Retirees will find themselves embraced by a friendly and caring environment, fostering connections and creating a sense of belonging that enhances their retirement experience.
Whakatane has a modern hospital that was rebuilt in 2014 at a cost of $67million.
Whakatane has an excellent hospital service providing a wide range of core health services. There are over 20 General Practitioners in Whakatane, Edgecumbe and Murupara
Pacific Health Whakatane Hospital provides 24-Hour acute and elective capability in emergency, surgical, maternity and child health, medical, and mental health services. The hospital has more than 160 eds and is assisted by clinical support services of laboratory, radiology and pharmacy.
There are private medical services by East Bay Specialists that include general surgery, SkinCancer Treatment, Endoscopy, Orthopaedics and Urology.
The call by residents is a long one, asking for a Lifestyle Retirement Village to be local, so that friends, family and community activities and facilities can continue to be enjoyed, without having to locate to Tauranga or another region for those later years.
People are not always ready to be in an old person's home/hospital, they want to be independent. We are in an aging population, the Baby Boomers are getting older, retiring and wanting to downsize, but all in their local area, not having to move away.
When Tony Bonne was Mayor of the Whakatane District he worked at getting a Lifestyle Retirement Village operator to establish a village on the council land at Coastlands, the popular beach subdivision of the Whakatane town. The Whakatane District Council sold its Coastal block known as the 100 acre block to private developers around 2018. Since then the developers have been trying to get resource consent to build over 200 houses and a lifestyle retirement village.
However, due to the proximity to an urupa, there has been loud and consistent Iwi opposition to any development of this private land and it is envisaged that the land will never be allowed to be developed. This has meant Whakatane is still lacking the land that would be suitable for a Lifestyle Retirement Village. However, it has come to our attention that there is a substantial area of land, in Coastlands - the preferred location for this retirement Lifestyle Village - that is perfect to establish a complex for retirees.
