For my significant artist presentation, I was paired up with fellow architecture student, Kelsey Skees, to research the American sculptor, Robert Smithson. The importance of this project was not only to learn to work well with another person, but also to get exposure to professionals in our 1 field.

C u b e s & C y l i n d e r s The Cubes & Cylinders project was completed throughout the semester, along with our other projects. The purpose was to practice our craftmanship, explore and use new materials to construct accurate 3D forms, as well as practice proper drawing techniques.

This was the first project of Design 1; it focused on collaborating with other students to create an abstract design concept that utilized the outside space.

My teammates Siobhan Murphy, Liz Morales, and Devin Paray created this design that symbolized life. We used only twine and elements of the earth to create our site.

Topological Transformations focused on the craft and accuracy of the project. The objective of this project was to replicate our chosen object in four different forms. As the first project to introduce us to model-making, it taught us how accuracy and good craftmanship can make or break a project.

Color

Pattern

The purpose of this project was to introduce us to how color, pattern, and texture play a role in good design. This project allowed us to explore different methods of creating color, apply that to the pattern we created, and then transform our 2D color pattern into a 3D paper model. This allowed us to explore how a simple shape can transform into an intricate pattern.

The purpose of this project was to understand how a 3D object can relate to a 2D object. To do this the students focused on a specific textile in order to create a 3D wood model that reflects the section of the textile they chose. The main purpose of this project was to understand hierarchy in a design by utilizing diagrams and analysis drawings.

For this project, students were required to visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art and select a painting to create a series of diagrams and drawings from. From that, students were asked to create a bas relief of their painting and transform the paper model into a wood model.

"Making Space" was the final project of Design 1. It utilized the wood model from project 5, and techniques learned throughout the semester to compose a space that is reflective of the student's chosen invisible city.
