Donald Trump’s Inauguration
By Brundasree unadi
The inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th president of the United States took place on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025. Due to the freezing temperature and high winds, the inauguration was moved inside, which meant a limited audience at Monday’s swearing-in for Trump.. This marked the 60th U.S presidential inauguration, the first term of JD Vance as vice president, and the second non-consecutive re-inauguration of a U.S president (after Grover Cleveland in 1893).
The inauguration hosted a variety of people from tech bros to MMA fighters. Trump’s controversial ally, X owner and billionaire, Elon Musk, wasn’t the only tech CEO at Monday’s inauguration. Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew also made appearances, with Trump promising a delay on the implementation of the Tiktok ban, allotting time for a deal to be reached with the app. Another tech giant in the audience was Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAir. Altman was pictured posing with influencer brothers Logan and Jake Paul. Podcaster Joe Rogan was also seen at the event. In 2020, Rogan endorsed Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders, but switched to endorse Trump in 2024, Rogan’s editorial approach has certainly had its controversy, notably during the Covid pandemic, when he was accused of spreading vaccine misinformation. Additionally, in 2022, Rogan apologized after widely-shared

footage of him repeatedly using a racial slur within the early episodes of his show resurfaced. Despite all this controversy, his podcast is quite popular and influential. Rupert Murdoch, chairman emeritus of News Corporation, (owner of Fox News, the Wall Street Journal, the Sun, and the Times) was also present at the inauguration. The appearance of such journalism giants raises the question: will we see these outlets begin to lean towards the conservative side? Murdoch has often been willing to adjust his tone to align with changing political winds or market demand, which is why we might see varying levels of bias or alignment across his media empire, depending on what’s at stake.
Country singer and former “American Idol” winner Carrie Underwood performed “America the Beautiful” during the ceremony, announc ing that she “is honored to have been asked to sing at the inauguration and to
be a small part of this historic event.” Lee Greenwood— Trump’s long-time friend and collaborator, also performed at the inauguration ceremony, along with opera singer Christopher Macchio . During his campaign, Trump frequently played “YMCA” and “Macho Man,” both by disco group, The Village People, who were also present at the ceremony. “Our song ‘YMCA’ is a global anthem that hopefully helps bring the country together after a tumultuous and divided campaign where our preferred candidate lost,” said the band in a post on its Facebook page.
All four living former US presidents attended, as is customary. Notably, Michelle Obama, beloved former first lady, didn’t accompany her husband as he walked into the Rotunda. Obama stood at the front of the stage alongside George W Bush, Bill Clinton, and Hillary Clinton. World leaders and politicians made an appearance at the ceremony as well. A familiar face
CEO’s Assassination Sparks Debate
By aidan WeinBerger

On Dec. 4, 2024, Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel. The crime has sent shockwaves through corporate America and ignited heated discussions about healthcare, justice, and
terrorism. At the center of controversy stands Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old UPenn graduate from Towson, Maryland, whose motivations have since become a focal point of national debate. According to authorities, Mangione meticulously planned the killing. He reportedly harbored resentment towards the healthcare industry, blaming corporations like UnitedHealthcare for prioritizing profit over patients. When Mangione was arrested on Dec. 9, 2024, after a tip-off from a McDonald’s employee in Altoona, Pennsylvania, police found a 9mm ghost gun, a silencer, multiple fake IDs, and a handwritten manifesto criticizing the healthcare system. He was then extradited from Pennsylvania to New York on Dec. 19, 2024, under heavy security. He appeared in federal court with armed guards by his side. Mangione was initially charged with second-degree murder, but the severity of the crime soon escalated the situation. Mangione now faces 11 state charges, including first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism, as well as four federal charges. These include two counts of stalking, murder through the use of a firearm, and using a weapon equipped with a silencer. A key distinction between the state and federal charges lies in the fact that the federal charges come with a possibility of the death penalty, should prosecutors choose to pursue it. Moreover,
was British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, regarded by the president-elect himself as “Britain’s Trump.” Others included Italy’s minister Giorgi Meloni, Argentina’s president Javier Milei, and China’s vice president, Han Zheng. Some politicians declined attendance at the event, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a leading figure in the Democratic Party’s progressive wing, who announced she would skip the inauguration in a heavily circulated video on Instagram.
After giving his inaugural address, Trump headed to the President’s Room to sign key documents, including his tendentious withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement. Later in the evening, he appeared at three inaugural balls throughout the city, speaking at all three regarding his presidency and upcoming policies. Trump also began issuing a flurry of executive actions on Monday, right after being sworn in as the 47th president of the United States, abiding by his vow of “only being a dictator on day one.”
“The inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th president of the United States.”
many are concerned regarding the terrorism charges, as this assassination is not viewed as a typical form of terrorism. However, as Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg addresses it, “this was a killing that was intended to evoke terror, and we’ve seen that reaction.”
“Police found a 9mm ghost gun, a silencer, multiple fake IDs, and a handwritten manifesto criticizing the healthcare system.”
During his court appearance, Mangione’s attorney, Tom Dickey, stated that Mangione would plead not guilty to the charges. Interestingly, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, who is also part of Mangione’s legal team, and married to Marc Agnifilo, is representing Sean “Diddy” Combs in his federal sex trafficking
case in Manhattan. Mangione’s legal team also raised questions about the relations between state and federal jou risdictions. “He is a young man, and he is being treated like a human ping pong ball, between two warring jurisdictions here,” said defense attorney Agnifilo when criticizing the dual charges. Mangione’s next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 21, 2025, where the debate over whether his actions constitute terrorism is expected to intensify.
This case itself has sparked significant public discourse, with reactions ranging from outrage to unexpected support for Mangione. Critics of the American healthcare industry have used the case as a symbol of the effects of corporate greed. Some have even expressed sympathy for Mangione, viewing his manifesto as a reflection of broader frustrations with America’s healthcare system. On the other hand, many have condemned both the crime and its glorification. Advocates for stricter gun control and mental health reform argue that the case highlights the urgent need for systemic change.
As legal proceedings unfold, one thing is clear: the impact of this case will extend far beyond the courtroom. For some, it’s a call to action against systemic inequities. For others, it’s a warning of extremism and its devastating consequences. As for Bri-

The Presidential Cabinet: Explained
Quickly after President-elect Donald J. Trump was elected, he named many of his cabinet picks. Many of his choices have become subjects of commentary and scrutiny, and while that is important to evaluate, it is equally crucial that we consider the question of how they will impact Congress and American politics in general. A majority of these prominent figures have yet to be approved by the Senate to take office; however, with the Republican party having a slight majority in the Senate, all of Trump’s picks will most likely be approved by a majority vote.
“Many have raised concerns and questions about DOGE including: How much power does this department have? How will their nominees be appointed? And most importantly, is this department a vessel to concentrate government power among fewer individuals?”
When thinking about how these figures impact everyday people, we have to understand their roles in the government and how much authority they have. The cabinet’s job is to advise the president, and they are potential successors to the presidency if something happens to the Vice President, Speaker of the House, and Senate President pro tempore. The cabinet consists of 15 people, each assigned to their respective federal departments. Their job is to oversee each department and implement the president’s policies. Each department affects different spheres of daily life. For example, the Department of Health and Human Services includes the FDA and CDC, which help regulate substances, food, medicine, and disease, ensuring public safety regarding these matters. Without funding for that department, the FDA may take even longer to approve life-saving drugs, and the CDC may be unable to control the spread of dangerous diseases. The Department of Justice ensures that state and federal laws are properly
enforced, there is unbiased administration of justice, and the criminal and civil prosecutions that the United States is involved in are fair. If improperly managed, the justice system will fail, and laws may not be followed, endangering the public. The Department of the Treasury oversees economic development, collects taxes, and manages federal finances. Without proper management, the Department of the Treasury may be unable to maintain a stable economy. If the leaders of these numerous departments are not experienced or capable of fulfilling these roles, it will be detrimental to the government, the common person, and the country as a whole.
There is much discussion around Trump’s picks, both positive and negative. He is facing backlash because, as many have pointed out, a majority of his picks lack experience. For example, Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon, has never been a teacher, having been a WWE executive for most of her life. Similarly, his nominee for Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, retired with a mid-rank in the Army National Guard, and prior to his nomination, was a Fox News host. Many of Trump’s nominations follow this trend, and they do have one thing in common: they are all old friends of Trump or were large donors to his campaign. Now, was this done with the intent to centralize power within the government, or did Trump nominate these people because he truly believed they fit the position? That cannot be answered by anyone but Trump himself, but this isn’t a new trend among presidents. John F. Kennedy also had a few suspicious cabinet picks, namely his brother Robert F. Kennedy. Robert Kennedy lacked experience in law and government and was the youngest attorney general to serve at the time. Though this pick was controversial, Kennedy had a very effective term as attorney general, proving that he was indeed capable of the position, despite his lack of experience.
While some of Trump’s picks may be controversial, there are some that are well suited for their appointed positions. Scott Bessent, nominee for Treasury Secretary, has a lot of experience in law and finance. He is also the first openly gay secretary of the Treasury. Previously, Bessent donat
ed to both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns, and he provides a contrast to some of Trump’s far right, conservative nominees.
Another topic of scrutiny among Trump’s nominees is his appointment of Elon Musk to a newly proposed department: the “Department of Government Efficiency”, or DOGE. The proposal of this new department has caused a lot of controversy. Musk is a very wealthy businessman: He owns Tesla, X (formerly Twitter), and SpaceX. Musk may not need Senate approval to take the position, since DOGE is a relatively new concept. Many have raised concerns and questions about DOGE including: How much power does this department have? How will their nominees be appointed? And most importantly, is this department a vessel to concentrate government power among fewer individuals?
Another topic of discussion regarding Trump’s cabinet is his plans to eliminate departments and his role in Project 2025. Publicly, Trump is independent of Project 2025, which both parties have stated; however, many of his policies and advisors are heavily involved in it. Trump has only explicitly stated he will try to remove one department, the Department of Education, but many speculate that he will attempt to remove, change, or downsize more when he gains office. Because members of Trump’s administration are closely aligned with Project 2025, many worry that he will try to eliminate or privatize many departments including the Transportation Security Administration, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Education, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Department of Justice, and the CDC. This is all speculative, but President Trump and those who advise him have many connections to Project 2025.
Perhaps the most concerning policy in President Trump’s cabinet is his plan to eliminate the Department of Education. The Department of Education funds and distributes financial aid for schools, allowing students to further their education, regardless of their financial or socioeconomic status. It also ensures equal access to education,
“Perhaps the most concerning policy in President Trump’s cabinet is his plan to eliminate the Department of Education. The Department of Education funds and distributes financial aid for schools, allowing students to further their education,”
regardless of race, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, or any other factor. This department is crucial to providing and creating quality education for all students. Without it, future generations will likely have poor-quality education, especially those that live in areas with low socioeconomic status, because equal educational opportunities will not be ensured. Overall, there are many positives and negatives to President Trump’s cabinet. The cabinet has a lot of power and influence over our nation, and selecting the proper people is essential to the success of the country. As Trump continues to serve as President, we will be able to better understand his cabinet and how well they execute their roles as they shape the future of America.

Lunar New Year in Different Cultures
By isaBelle hsu & auTumn BoWman

From vibrant fireworks to ward off evil spirits and bad luck, to setting the table with 12 roundshaped fruits to represent the 12 months of the year and wealth, the Lunar New Year is celebrated in vastly different ways worldwide, all sharing a common element; the celebration of life and culture- and food, of course! The lunar calendar assigns each of its years to an animal inspired by Chinese folklore. These zodiac animals rotate in a fixed order, cycling every 12 years, (rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig). China, Vietnam, Korea, the Philippines, and Indonesia, are some of the official countries that celebrate the Lunar New Year. Despite all being in Asia, however, each has its quirk for celebrating this popular holiday.
In China, the widely celebrated Chinese New Year (also known as the Spring Festival) marks the start of a prosperous and lucky year with a spirited 15-day celebration. Distinguishable by its prominent color, red is used in many different ways; clothing, envelopes, and the famous dragon dance for good luck and strength. But why exactly is this color so commonly found throughout the celebration? Dating back to the original Han people of China, red symbolized both luck and prosperity and from then on, the color integrated itself into the country’s culture and eventual celebration of the Lunar New Year. Longevity, a prominent part of not only Chinese New Year, but Chinese culture, significantly presents itself in the art and literature of China’s history, which is why the use of long noodles has become a unique tradition for those celebrating the holiday. Long noodles are meant to wish a happy, prosper-
ous, and long life for the consumer, which is why not only are they eaten during the holiday, but during birthdays, too. Daniel Wen (9) shared with us some of the activities he did and foods he ate for Chinese New Year; “I ate a lot of dumplings and watched the annual Chinese New Year celebration on TV– I really liked the dancing and performances that were shown.I thought New Years was okay this year, though.” Chinese traditions and festivities, particularly those surrounding the Chinese New Year, quickly spread across Asia and eventually to other parts of the world.
Korea was one of the first countries to adopt these customs, blending them with their own cultural practices to create a uniquely Korean Lunar New Year celebration. In Korean culture, the New Year, known as Seollal, is a threeday celebration. Seollal is a festive occasion that emphasizes family togetherness, honoring heritage, and paying respect to ancestors. As part of the celebration, many wear colorful hanbok, traditional Korean attire, to showcase cultural pride and bring a touch of elegance to the holiday. Vibrant colors such as red, blue, green, and yellow are typically used in hanbok, each color representing something different. During Seollal, the main dish eaten is called tteokguk, which consists of beef broth, rice cakes, green onions, and sliced eggs. Tteokguk is widely recognized for its auspicious qualities, as it is believed to bring good fortune and longevity to those who consume it. Sebae is also another practice that is common during Seollal. It involves bowing to superiors on the first day of the new year

as a gesture of gratitude and respect.
For countries like Vietnam, the Lunar New Year is denoted as, by far, the largest and most important festival on the Vietnamese calendar. The 12 Days of Tết occupy a time to celebrate family, religion,
and refresh; washing off our bad luck and giving way for good luck through various purification rituals. Like other popular Lunar New Year celebrations, Tết doesn’t hesitate to encourage the arrangement of lavish family meals. Depending on the location within Vietnam, dishes included in these meals can vary anywhere from Banh Tet (sticky rice cakes) of southern Vietnam- a generational holiday staple, to Bamboo Shoot soup- a popular dish in northern Vietnam. However, dishes like Nem rán (spring rolls) are a staple throughout all of Vietnam during the holiday. Especially in Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital city, Tết does not discriminate- it is a celebration of both Vietnam’s people and foreigners alike, welcoming all to enter the new year as a better version of themselves. Just as the Chinese New Year highlights the sharing of red envelopes, during Tết, red envelopes are given as symbols of good luck and prosperity, drawing one of many similarities between the two celebrations. Yvonne Le (10) shares her Lunar New Year experience this year, saying, “I always spend the New Year with my family, and it’s tradition for us to eat noodles because it represents a longer life. Specifically, my family likes to eat Bún bò Huế, a rice noodle dish in beef broth.”
Lunar New Year is also a grand celebration in the Philippines, as 5 percent of the general population in the Philippines consists of indigenous Chinese people. In the Philippines, it is also known as Tsinoy New Year, a name derived from the Tsinoy people, a community of Chinese Filipinos. All the aspects and traditions celebrated during the New Year share a common theme of bringing prosperity. During this festive occasion, round foods and clothing with round patterns are prominently displayed, as round shapes are believed to bring prosperity and wealth in the coming years. Certain dishes, such as those containing fish or chicken, are prohibited during the New Year’s celebration. This practice

Distinguishable by its prominent color, red is used in many different ways; clothing, envelopes, and the famous dragon dance for good luck and strength”
stems from the belief that consum ing such foods will attract hunger and misfortune in the coming year. Lunar New Year, despite modernizing throughout the years, has long-held traditions dating thousands of years back. These traditions continue to emphasize the significance of life’s essence and the vitality of interpersonal connections. Whether through grand celebrations or intimate gatherings with family and friends, these traditions contribute to the manifestation of prosperity and good fortune for the upcoming year.

I.C.E. Cold Avocados
All the recipes we like for avocados: our toasts, salads, and guacamoles are now in full jeopardy, but this situation is more critical than just not eating avocados. Recently, farmers in Bakersfield have been avoiding coming to their jobs in fear of deportation by President Trump’s new executive orders. After Trump’s inauguration, the first executive orders instituted focused solely on immigrants and their removal. As of now, I.C.E (U.S. Immigration

and Customs Services) has begun to carry out the largest deportation

mission in U.S. history. This action mostly affected the states of Cali fornia, Utah, Illinois, Minnesota, New York, Florida, and Maryland. Looking at this operation from an economic standpoint, the benefits unfortunately do not outweigh the negatives. The rhetoric that Donald Trump operated on during the election included keeping America safe by deporting all of the allegedly vio lent immigrants that posed a danger to this country. In theory, removing criminals from this country is undoubtedly a beneficial action, however, Trump is not focused on them. The scope of President Trump’s operation will cost an estimated 88 billion dollars per year according to The American Immigration Council. Keeping this cost in mind, the 1 million people this budget could re-

move does not only affect the federal budget but also other aspects of the economy. Since the budget covers 1 million people, it will also directly affect immigrants who do not fall into the definition of criminal. Some of these non-criminal immigrants have important jobs, including farmers, educators, health workers, raw material miners, and construction workers. Removing these people will have drastic effects on our export economy, and the first signs of this are already happening. I.C.E. Agents in Bakersfield have been arriving in unmarked vans, wearing civilian clothing, racially profiling citizens, detaining whomever they deem an illegal immigrant, and continuing with their agenda, according to Sara Fuentes via CalMatters. With this tension, Bakersfield farm-
ers have gone on strike from their day shifts, likely leading to detrimental effects on California’s produce and exports. California is responsible for 13% of the U.S. agricultural exports and is worth 25 billion dollars, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. With these numbers and incoming raids, prices for fruits and vegetables such as avocados may skyrocket and California’s exports will shrink to account for the lack of labor needed to keep up the agricultural demand. If this trend continues, agriculture-related products will go up in price, the U.S. food revenue will shrink, and the economy may worsen over time.

Valentine’s Day: A Celebration of Oneself
By Katherine Pfeizer
Valentine’s Day has long been synonymous with romantic gestures, lavish dinners, and gift cards, yet for all its allure, the holiday brings an undercurrent of stress. The pressure to show off a perfect relationship can weigh heavily on couples and make single individuals feel sidelined by a celebration that prioritizes relationships above all else. In which, I beg the question: Is it time to rethink Valentine’s Day? For many, especially those around me, Valentine’s Day has been a source of unnecessary stress. The holiday reinforces this specific idea that love must look a certain way to feel or be valid, which causes friction in even the healthiest relationships. The need to project an idealized version of romance with lavish gifts and a perfectly curated social media post can hurt a relationship and turn what should be a meaningful occasion into a performative exercise. And to clarify, I am not a bitter person who wants to undermine this holiday; I see it as a great way to show love. However, I believe that it should be reimagined. By broadening the scope to include self-love and other forms of connection, Valentine’s Day would become more inclusive and fulfilling, putting away this homogenized ideal of romantic love. This perspective shift isn’t just for those who feel excluded. It can also lighten the load for couples, relieving this chase to conform to unrealistic expectations. So, by reframing Valentine’s Day as a
time to celebrate love for oneself, the holiday can foster a more meaningful and personal experience for everyone.
A way to celebrate self-love is to let go of yourself, try something new, relax, or even indulge! Valentine’s Day this year falls on a Friday, which means that it is a perfect time to take a break after school, and use the day as uninterrupted downtime. You
whether it’s a spa day or simply spending the afternoon online shopping; treating yourself to what makes you happy is a powerful way to practice self-love. And if that is too financially straining, use the day as an excuse to try something new. Bake something you’ve never made, start a DIY project, or learn a skill you’ve always been interested in. The best part is that all of

can go on a long walk, work on your hobby, or even simply relax. Take time to recharge and create a space for what you need, even if it means simply taking a break from your routine! And if you have the energy to go all out, you can buy something you’ve been eyeing for a while or take yourself to your favorite restaurant. Celebrating your interests is a reminder that you deserve good things in life,
these options are independent activities you can try out this Valentine’s Day! Even if Valentine’s Day doesn’t strike you as a day to focus on yourself, it doesn’t always need to be about romantic love. You can also celebrate “Palentines,” the friendship equivalent of Valentine’s Day.. So plan the day with your friends and think of potluck meals, board games, or even casual outings to spend time with those who matter most! If you want to cel-
ebrate this holiday with your significant other, especially with partners celebrating Valentine’s for the first time, tell them what you want out of the day instead of being disappointed in something they weren’t aware of. All in all, Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be a holiday that’s all about grand declarations of love. Expanding its purpose to include self-care and connection in all forms can make it a day that genuinely uplifts everyone, regardless of their relationship status. Whether you’re single, in a relationship, or somewhere in between, the day can be an opportunity to celebrate what makes you, and the people around you unique.
“All in all, Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be a holiday that’s all about grand declarations of love.”

The Uncertain Future of a High School Tradition
BY ABigAil NewlANder
Every year, high school students across the United States, especially seniors, look forward to the yearbook coming out. Getting the opportunity to take a look back at the school year in pictures is considered one of the quintessential traditions of American high schools for decades. Months, years, even decades after graduating, teachers and parents still have their own high school yearbooks to look back on and show to their students or children. However, yearbook programs across the country are shrinking, being forced to shut down, or switching from physical publications to digital photo albums, and CCA is no exception to this unfortunate fate.
For many years, the creation of Conspiracy, CCA’s yearbook, has been handled by the student editors with the help of a faculty advisor. The last few years have seen low demand for yearbooks and low sign up numbers have rendered the CCA administration unable to run the class on its own, forcing it to be combined with another class. At times, the class has been run at the same time as Advanced Journalism or College Application Seminar, and for the last three years it has only been run during one semester. This leads to the publication being rushed, and the editors become overworked in the spring semester because they lost a lot of their designated time to work on the yearbook. Combining yearbook with another class also detracts
from the amount of attention each class is receiving, which can be harmful to students in both classes and the overall quality of the final yearbook.
Ben Sartwell (12), Editor-In-Chief of the 2025 yearbook, has been part of the Conspiracy program since his freshman year, and has watched the program get smaller throughout his time at CCA. “Spring my freshman year had maybe 25 people,” said Sartwell, noting that as the program gets smaller, everyone left has to put in a lot more work. “Sophomore year is when in the fall we had seven people on staff, and we barely turned anything in. We just couldn’t get anything done.” Overworked staff, mismanagement by the editors, and the class only being run for one semester led to the 2023 yearbook feeling rushed and unfinished, with many mistakes and typos going uncaught. In 2024, the class was run only one semester again, and with the staff working in the unfortunate shadow of the 2023 publication, the 2024 edition of Conspiracy was completed with a much higher quality than the previous year.
Spring 2024 came along and the staff learned that the program was at risk of shutting down due to low demand. Sartwell, unwilling to see the program disappear, advocated for a new advisor for the class in order to keep the program going. “It’s a keepsafe,” Sartwell said, “it’s really important, especially to the seniors when they’re going

somewhere new and they’re probably not going to see their friends as often.” Sartwell also noted that the yearbooks are a part of history and yearbooks throughout the years have included current events of note to students, such as COVID, social media trends of that school year, elections, and much more. While Conspiracy has been revived and the class has grown from last year, the same problems are plaguing schools across the country.
“It’s a dying art, unfortunately,” said Sartwell regarding the publication of physical yearbooks, “I’ve talked to a lot of schools and they’ve gone digital, which is not necessarily a bad
Los Angeles Fires v.s. Arctic Winds
BY KAtheriNe liN
As the United States faces the winter, it is experiencing extreme weather on both coasts, showing how unpredictable and dangerous the climate can be. In California, wildfires are burning through communities, fueled by dry conditions and strong winds. Meanwhile, in the East, freezing cold temperatures and heavy snowstorms are making life difficult for millions.
In Southern California, wildfires have destroyed thousands of acres and forced many people to evacuate their homes. The Palisades Fire near Pacific Palisades have burned nearly 20,000 acres, while the Eaton Fire in Altadena has burned approximately 13,000
acres. Dry weather and powerful Santa Ana winds are making the fires spread quickly, leaving firefighters struggling to control them. One of the reasons the fires are so bad is the ongoing drought. There hasn’t been enough rain, so plants and trees are dry and easy to burn. Climate change is also making the problem worse by causing longer, hotter summers and shifting weather patterns
While the West is burning, the East is freezing. Cities like Chicago and New York are dealing with record-low temperatures caused by a polar vortex, which is cold air from the Arctic that has moved south. Some areas have experienced cold weath

er as low as -30 degrees, and heavy snowfall that has led to widespread flight delays, and made many roads dangerous. People in the East are being warned to stay inside and bundle up due to the extreme cold, which can cause frostbite in just minutes. The freezing weather is also putting stress on energy systems, as everyone is cranking up the heat to stay warm.
While these two weather events may seem unrelated to each other, the Los Angeles Times highlights that the juxtaposition of drought-fueled fires in the West and ice storms in the East exemplifies the “weather whiplash” driven by climate change. Warmer global temperatures are disrupting normal weather patterns, leading to more extreme and unpredictable conditions. In California, the heat and drought make wildfires worse, while in the East, a warming Arctic can disrupt the jet stream, causing cold air to dip farther south than usual.
This extreme weather is a reminder of how serious climate change is and how it’s already affecting our lives. Communities across the country are being pushed to their limits, whether they’re dealing with fires, floods, or freezing cold. It’s clear that we need to take climate change seriously and prepare for more of these challenges in the fu-
thing.” Sartwell pointed to the popularity of social media and their current place in American high schools as a cause of the downward trend of the yearbook. Many of the memories in the yearbook are just as easily captured on social media, where they can be posted immediately instead of waiting months to see them printed. Despite once being one of the most anticipated traditions of American high schools, the fate of yearbook programs remains uncertain. Will these programs be able to turn around as Conspiracy has, or will they be swept into the downfall of physical media? Only time will tell
ture. It’s clear that we need to take climate change seriously and prepare for more of these challenges in the future.
“While these two weather events may seem unrelated to each other, the Los Angeles Times highlights that the juxtaposition of drought-fueled fires in the West and ice storms in the East exemplifies the ‘weather whiplash’ driven by climate change.”

Coffee Chats: Mr. Siegel Edition

Mr. Siegel doesn’t drink coffee. Does that derail our tradition of bringing teachers coffee and our opening question? Yes. But does that detract from the point of a “coffee chat”? No. Just like we’re welcoming the new semester and Raven Review staff, we (belatedly) welcome Mr. Siegel’s return to campus! As one of the few CCA alumni teachers, we brushed over his decision to come back and teach at the school, as well as his passion for lacrosse, coaching, and science.
What is it like coaching lacrosse?
“Coaching is super fun. It allows me to … pass along both my knowledge and my passion for the game. That actually started here, because I didn’t play lacrosse until I started becoming … a ninth-grader here … I just love sports in general. But I love lacrosse, teaching life lessons through
lacrosse, [and] also just having the kids enjoy being together, working as a team and just bettering their skills.”
What got you into teaching and influenced you to come back to CCA?
“[It] was a combination of things. Right after college, I was coaching here … with Mr. Shakiri, who was my lacrosse coach… [and] chemistry teacher …[He], my mom, who was a teacher before I was born, and my wife, [who] was going through her master’s program to become a teacher… and not really knowing exactly what I wanted to do … suggested [for me to] substitute [and see] see if [I] like being in the classroom … And I did, and then next thing I know, I…followed my wife to USD to get my masters, and became a teacher.”
What made you want to teach science in particular?
“What really made me want to teach science was … the application of it … That’s what I found most fulfilling or fun about teaching environmental science, is the application of what you’re learning outside the classroom … I’m trying to make [science] fun, make it so that your time in my class is enjoyable, and make your time in class…mean something.”
What is your favorite class to teach?
“Right now…I’m partial to AP Environmental Science because it’s new to me … I love the idea … [of] tinkering with certain assignments and finding better assignments the next semester… Bio[logy] feels a little bit more … set in stone, even though there are definitely ways to improve it. But when I have a full class load of just APES, I can put all my effort into … fine-tuning it, and finding … the best assignments or the best…ways to present material.”
Which class would you like to teach?
“I would like to teach AP Bio[logy] in the future.”
If you could teach any other class in another department, what would it be?
“Sociology. I took that from Lockhart when I was a student, and I actually, like, fell into it because I dropped a class my freshman year, and that was the only class available…It’s mostly an upperclassman class, and I remember it being pretty eye-opening, mainly because I had, like, juniors and seniors discussing things that, like I just hadn’t really thought of yet, and also its exposure to cultures, to ideas that I really hadn’t thought of yet.”
Do you have a particular senior’d out story?
“My senior’d out was…pretty eventful. Unfortunately for me, I didn’t end up winning, but I had a pretty good chance at it … At the time, we used to the winner used to have the most tags, but it wasn’t squirting a bottle and there wasn’t even … the floaty. It was actually just if you were with someone, then you were safe …and you just had to … tag each other … So it was later in the game and I didn’t know [the person who had me], but … she evidently knew the kid I used to drive to school … The kid I used to drive to school told her that I had a key that I used to … hide in my gas tank… So I [went] to my car to get my lacrosse stuff out of my car – this is after third period – and she’s hiding in my back seat… She said she tagged me…so that’s how it ended … [ASB] sided with her, and I was out … And my buddy, who I used to drive to school [and] claimed to be my best friend … sold me out a little bit. Hopefully, he got something out of it.”

RedNote: The Search for a TikTok Replacement

Users from the now-banned app TikTok are searching for a replacement, and many apps, including Instagram, Neptune, and many more, are candidates. These companies are competing to take TikTok’s number one spot in consumers’ minds. However, one app has the vote of most TikTok users to become the next big app, and it’s Red Note. Red Note is a Chinese app, also known as Xiaohongshu, that is rapidly gaining popularity among Americans. But will it beat its competition and prevail as the number one social media app? The Apple App Store leaderboard for Social Networking apps says so. Red Note has been #1 on the Apple App Store’s list ever since the TikTok ban was confirmed. TikTok plummeted down to #11, as several apps
all competed to overtake Red Note.

They also have made videos teaching the basics of the Chinese language and some slang. The American users have also been respectful and have helped these users with their English in return. This mutual desire for a peace ful app environment has made it possible for these users to find harmony.

its parent company is Xingin, created in 2013. Mainly, people share fashion tips, cooking and recipes, home decor, and memes on the app. The developers are working to make a translation feature for posts and comments, as the app is mostly in Chinese. Most users of Red Note are still Chinese, even with the large number of Americans moving to the app as a result of the TikTok ban. While there are many reasons why people are joining Red Note, one of the sentiments that a lot of these “Tiktok Refugees” share is that they are going to this app as an act of defiance. Many are going to use ChatGPT or Google Translate to understand posts from Chinese users. While the company hasn’t acknowledged the flock of American users, the Chinese users seem to be
Under an executive order signed by President Trump, TikTok can resume operations in the United States for 75 days (although it is still unable to be downloaded on the App Store). While this does not ensure TikTok will be available after the allotted time, it has given users hope that ByteDance — TikTok’s parent company — will sell to an American partner. Right now, it’s only being used to ban Lemon8, TikTok, and Capcut, all of ByteDance’s apps. Red Note, while Chinese-owned, is not owned by ByteDance. Xingin apps are not currently being banned nor is there any evidence that shows that President Trump is looking to ban it as well. According to most of the internet, Red Note has emerged as the replacement for TikTok. As netizens flock to Red Note, its rank among social media apps continues to stay on top. Overall, people recommend the app for its peaceful atmosphere and nice users.

Best known by upperclassmen for their (sadly now-prohibited) lunchtime Cup Noodle sales, our very own Japanese National Honor Society offers much more than what most students may expect. Their mission statement is “to aid those seeking to excel in Japanese studies, to share Japanese culture inside and outside of our community, and to make long-lasting friends and memories.” I’m not exaggerating when I say JNHS offers a buffet of opportunities for students to explore everything Japan–everything. They host peer-tutoring sessions, karaoke nights, exchange students, a variety of volunteering opportunities, and, of course, Japanese cultural presentations and experiences. Some recent examples include volunteering at San Diego’s annual mochitsuki (mochi-making) event; preparing and serving sado, a

traditional Japanese tea ceremony; and working with TP’s JNHS for a beach cleanup! Be on the lookout for their Lunar New Year festivities as well as the
annual trip to Little Tokyo. If you’re interested in joining them, make sure to check out their Google Classroom using code WGBDHNJ and follow @ccajnhs.
Sporting an unusual and oftentimes excessive advertising style, CCA Thinking Club was conceptualized in the spring of 2024 and is known for its vague and mysterious qualities. Initially devoted to heated debate and controversial issues between a small group of friends, this unique club has transformed to serve the wider student body. With over 20 active members and a plethora of Trader Joe’s snacks at their meetings, the thinkers aim to attract more members to converse with them about political, scientific, philosophical, economic, societal, and cultural developments–that’s a lot of conversation! Recent discussions include the TikTok ban, the 2024 Election, and morality. In addition, expect monthly jeopardy competitions which include questionable mystery bags and dares. The thinkers welcome students of all views and opinions, and you can find the latest updates for their club by joining their Google Classroom using code 3NLMSV3 or following @ccathinkingclub.
Many of us have heard of iGEM, but what does it really mean?
After a little digging, I’ve concluded that it’s an acronym for International Genetically Engineered Machine. Upon further research, I’ve found that it’s actually an annual competition

which features over 400 teams from across the world who develop novel solutions for problems in either local or universal communities using synthetic biology. CCA is fortunate enough to host one of these teams, who presented their research on combating the bacterium Erwinia Amylovora, which kills apple trees–impacting California agriculture. Their solution included extensive experimentation and engineering of a composite plasmid to prevent the apple blight. By working in both wet and dry labs provided by UCS , as well as meeting with both mentors
and individuals directly impacted by the apple blight, CCA iGEM earned bronze on the international stage and introduced a real-world answer to a real-world problem. Outside of pure synthetic biology, iGEM also deals in youth outreach, ethics, and business planning. As you can tell, they are pretty serious about what they do and have already had their kickoff in December; however, I’ve been told that they are looking for CS/Web Development “people” to help them build their web portfolio. Email ccaigem2025@gmail. com if you’re interested in what they do!

3 Worst Valentines Gifts
BY: ARTHI CHANDRA
Valentine’s Day is either a day people love or dread, with absolutely no in-betweens. As a celebration of love and affection with rose petals, heartshaped candies, and candle lit dinners, this day can bring up a lot of feelings and opinions.. Stores are flooded with significant others buying chocolate, and people saying the complicated words of “I love you.” While this annual holiday is surrounded by positivity and arrows being shot by Cupid, the real question comes down to what love really looks like on the 14 of February. Especially when considering the heavy role media plays when influencing expectations for both genders.
Traditional gender norms have always been a part of society, but have become significantly prevalent and have always played a large role in how people approach Valentine’s Day. As seen in almost every rom-com in existence, the man is expected to be the provider or gifter, while the woman is expected to play the role of being “receivers.” Historically, the man is supposed to plan a romantic evening. Flowers, fancy candle-lit dinners, and expensive jewelry are all considered to be the stereotypical and “correct” ways for a man to express their sincerity and love. This can sometimes
create pressure on men to spend vast amounts of money and pull off grand gestures. This should not be the determining factor of someone showing their love, but the stereotypes on Valentine’s Day have changed this for the worse.
On the other hand, women have always been traditionally seen
pressure for women to feel and look special on this specific day of the year, which plays into this stereotype of femininity on Valentine’s Day. This long-standing stereotype has originated not just from the expectations of men in society today, but also from the media itself, creating a sense of insecurity in many women all across the

as the ones to receive gestures and romantic gifts. There is a large empha sis placed on their reactions, which are supposed to be grand and feminine. They are also expected to have that specific image of femininity; dressing up nicely, and wearing fancy makeup and clothing. There is a certain
world. Famous romantic movies such as “The Notebook” and “How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days” illustrate the traditional way that women are supposed to act and behave, without any consensus for what they actually want in a relationship.
For some, while Valentine’s
Modern Love Equation
BY:
The search for the perfect gift this Valentine’s Day begins in the pink and red aisles of your local grocery store, drug store, or flower shop. Aesthetic candles, heart-shaped decorations, and assortments of chocolates and candies line the shelves. The date that once seemed far away is suddenly front and center in your life. The price tags are pretty hefty and most of what’s left in stock looks tacky and uninteresting. Should you go for the subpar easy gift just to check off the box for your significant other or good friends, or instead spend hours trying to think of something creative, just to make a last-minute thrown-together card? Here are three items to avoid when thinking of a gift for your valentine and some easy alternatives that might just swoop in and save the day.
1. Giant Stuffed Animals - Don’t get me wrong, I love stuffed animals. They can sometimes be one of the sweetest and most personal gifts someone can get for you. Maybe your valentine mentioned that they’ve always wanted a Jellycat or that they used to love a specific stuffed animal as a kid before it got lost on some random family vacation. However, most Valentine’s stuffies that I see being given are these oversized tacky-looking bears with maybe a couple of hearts across them, or a large glittery “Be Mine” shining on its belly. Although I can see how it would be a nice gesture,

you can tell there’s not a lot of thought behind the gift. While cute, these massive stuffed toys frankly just take up too much space. Oftentimes these sweet gifts might just end up getting stuffed into a closet, not because your valentine didn’t like it, but because there wasn’t enough space in their room. If you want to go the stuffed animal route, instead, I would recommend taking your valentine to a Build-A-Bear Workshop where you are able to make lasting memories while giving them a thoughtful and personal gift.
2. Pre-Packaged Gift Sets - Talk about oversized and flashy. Nothing makes me cringe more than seeingsomeone walk around with a massive pre-packaged Valentine’s basket. These gigantic gift sets are not only extremely expensive, but just scream
“For some, while Valentine’s Day is a day full of fun and love, for others it is considered to be a significant cause of stereotypes”
Day is a day full of fun and love, for others it is considered to be a significant cause of stereotypes between the two genders participating in this holiday. The real question comes down to whether these stereotypes that have stemmed from thousands of generations should still continue today. These outdated generalizations in gender roles and stereotypes have stressed the necessity to conform on Valentine’s Day. A shift towards having a more balanced day is something that has come to light in recent years, helping people create their own unique traditions on this day filled with love; something that may continue for decades to come.
These customized baskets with handpicked items show how much you care and think about your valentine, and the best thing about them is that the budget and price limit are very much up to you. You can just stock a basketwith your valentine’s favorite snacks and candies, or you can go even further and find their favorite clothes, a book they’ve been wanting, or something that reminds you of them.
that you found the first thing that had hearts on it and bought it straight away. These sets often have plasticroses, generic chocolates, a mug, and maybe some soap or bath bombs. While all of these items are great, do they really represent your valentine’spersonality or your relationship? If your answer is yes, maybe these sets are the way to go. If it is no, then you can also find specific sets you can get for your valentine that they’d appreciate more. Say they’re into self-care, or love a specific brand of chocolate. If none of these options work, skip the pre-packaged basket and put a customized one together yourself. In a time crazed with Boo Baskets and Burr Baskets all over social media pages, why not make one for your significant other or best friends on Valentine’s?
3. Generic Gift Cards - Gift cards can be a great gift when they’re specific to something your valentine truly loves, but a generic Visa or department store gift card feels more like an afterthought than a heartfelt gesture. This type of gift gives the impression that you didn’t know what to get them and decided to let them figure it out themselves. While it’s practical, it lacks the emotional or personal touch that makes a Valentine’s gift special. Instead, if you want to get a gift card, get one that shows that you have been paying attention to their interests. If they’re into gaming, think about getting them a gift card for their favorite gaming platform, if they love art, get them a gift card to an art store or a CeramiCafe so you can paint together. You should also pair it with a handwritten note and/or a small item like a flower or some chocolates that adds an extra layer of thoughtfulness.
Overall, Valentine’s Day gifts don’t have to be super extravagant or complicated. What truly matters is the thought and care behind the gesture. If you focus on gifts that show you’ve listened to your valentine and understand their personality, interests, and what makes them smile, that’s all that matters.

New Valentines Product Releases
BY: BAHAR MOTARJEMI
As the winter season winds down, one can hardly enter a store without seeing hundreds of flower bouquets, chocolates, candy hearts, and all sorts of decorations that have to come to be associated with Valentine’s Day, a holiday of love and appreciation. Valentine’s Day, aside from its regular festivities, like date nights or “Galentines” events, gives ample opportunities for brands to showcase festive products and innovative marketing campaigns. Some companies take this a step further as to develop

As soon as I was old enough to understand what Valentine’s Day meant, I rushed to ask my parents how they chose to celebrate. I loved love, even from a young age, and was

excited to learn how my very own two parents chose to express their adoration for each other on such a wonderful holiday. So, imagine my surprise when their answer was…an “Anti-Valentines Day Party?” Let me explain. My parents, both first generation immigrants who spent the majority of their lives in America, were raised with the idea of Valentine’s Day,
and Body Works. This line is designed to replicate the sugary sweet smell reminiscent of passing out valentines to classmates in school. The packaging for the collab perfectly replicates the Sweethearts design we all know and love, while incorporating its message through candles, body sprays, and lotions that remind us of the celebrations we hold on Valentine’s Day. Bringing childhood nostalgia into merchandise has been a popular trend among companies for years, and Valentine’s Day products are no exception to this.
#2 In this past year, Jellycats, a stuffed animal making company, has become an extremely popular gift, taking social media by storm. Customers are obsessed with the cute expressions and naturally-adorable designs of Jellycats, with many customers having collections of the stuffed animals. Each Jellycat comes with a signature facial expression and a loveable, festive design that entices customers to collect multiple. The company notably introduces new products for various seasons and holidays, and Valentine’s Day was not left out of this trend. New items range from hearts, bunnies adorned with flower-pattern ears, red velvet cakes, bouquets, and more. Jellycats make the perfect Valentine’s Day gift for loved ones, friends and family alike.
#3 Converse has just launched their Valentine’s Day Collection, and its tasteful variety of products makes it a perfect way to celebrate in style. The new launch, titled “Love Me, Love Me Not” features model and social media figure Alex Consani. The

campaign highlights both an edgy and a more feminine look through their product launch. Using the familiar Valentine’s Day colors of red and white, the collection includes signature sneakers with roses, heart embellish with the iconic Chuck Taylor logo. These shoes are a great addition to not just a Valentine’s Day outfit, but for any sneaker lovers out there wanting a change in their day-to-day attire. Every year, Valentine’s Day

but neither of them understood it. Why waste time and money on marked-up flowers and chocolates when you could get your loved one those things any other day? And for a discount, no less. My mom, in particular, felt that the holiday leaves out recognition of other caring relationships we build in life, which she argued were just as important as romantic ones. “Valentines Day [should] celebrate…love, not couples,” she said. So, when she met my dad, they were both shocked and pleased to find that (among many other things) their views on the Feb. 14 extravaganza were exactly the same. Neither of them
would ever have to rush to a crowded, ransacked, pink-flurry of a grocery store after a long day’s work to buy wilted roses and half-melted chocolate strawberries just because it was the day to do so. It might be the true reason they married each other, if you ask me.
In their newly found, mutually Valentines-Day-Repellent couplehood, my parents developed a tradition together. On Valentines Day, they’d throw a party for all of their single (and non-single) friends who were uninterested in roses and candle-lit dinners. At least in the conventional way, that is. They rounded everyone up and ei-
helps sell millions of products across the nation, a fact that companies, from bodycare to shoes, keep in mind when creating and marketing new merchandise. ther ordered takeout or met at a lowkey restaurant . In my mom’s words, they “partied, danced, and hung out,” simply enjoying each other’s company without the restraints of being bound to someone romantically. In that way, the parties weren’t inherently opposed to Valentines Day, but they simply changed the meaning to be more inclusive. The more the merrier, right? So, if you’re looking for something different to do this pink-heart season, consider an Anti-Valentines Day Party. The concept isn’t for everyone, and there is fun and excitement to be had in traditional Valentines Day activities. If you do have a partner, remember: the definition of Anti-Valentine’s Day Parties, as told by its inventors (my parents), does NOT exclude couples at all. Anyone, single or taken, can join in the fun of redefining Feb. 14 as a day of companionship, romantic and otherwise. Happy Anti-Valentine’s Day, everyone.

Entertainment Celebrity Relationship Predictions 2025
By AvA And LiLAh dAnieLs
Last year, we wrote an article predicting what would happen to nine celebrity couples, and we are proud to say we had a decent accuracy. Also, three couples who we said would stay together got engaged, which isn’t nothing! We predicted that five of the couples listed would break up, when the actual number was two (oops). However, all four couples we said would stay together are (allegedly) still going strong. So, with that in mind, here are our celebrity relationship predictions for 2025.
1 Lana Del Rey and Jeremy Dufrene: Lana Del Rey shocked fans when she ran off with an alligator tour guide and got married after allegedly dating for six months. Yes, six months. It was an insane move… but at the same time it was actually fitting? It is really on brand for her to get swept off her feet by a rando she met while on a whim to see a bunch of reptiles. We can totally see Lana going full trad wife this year having married the country bumpkin of the century. As for our predictions, they are either going to have a baby this year, get divorced, or both. We don’t judge… except for the fact that we definitely do. Hey, if they have a baby maybe they can name it after a type of alligator! Cuvier’s Dwarf Caiman Dufrene anyone? In all seriousness, we hope that Lana leaves him before she gets bitten by a stray alligator (unless she’s into that sort of thing).
2. Olivia Rodrigo and Louis Patridge: This relationship seems to be Olivia Rodrigo’s healthiest. In fact, it was the catalyst for her first love song (“so american”). This couple seems really sweet and wholesome from what we know, which is something we can always get behind. If they aren’t wholesome and Louis Partridge turns out to be evil, we will break something. Many of her fans think that she will release her first love album this year because of him, which doesn’t exactly scream break up. They will probably stay together, at least for this year and hopefully have more cute moments. While they are both young and definitely aren’t walking down the aisle any time soon any time soon, they seem to enjoy being together. Maybe they’ll get more serious in a few years, but for now they are probably just going to have fun.
3. Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater: Who would’ve thought that Spongebob and Homewrecker would still be together in 2025? We original ly said that they would break up this year, but we realized something: they

have a movie to promote! They aren’t going to break up while industry events keep forcing them to be together. Besides, that would be bad press for a film like “Wicked”, which isn’t fueled by drama like “Don’t Worry Darling” (aka our freshman selves’ obsession for months). They will probably break up when the “Wicked” press tour is over, and Ariana will pop up like a daisy and date someone (or something) else. She is trying to be taken seriously as an actress after all, and this relationship is not doing her any favors. Maybe she should try going after a guy who is single? Anyway, once they break up we’ll probably see her end up with another costar, especially if she does that Audrey Hepburn biopic she has been so obviously pining for.

4. Paul Mescal and Gracie Abrams: These two might already be broken up by the time this article comes out (because they were seen fighting very publicly), but we don’t care!!!!! If there is a mess, we will be there cackling about it. How messy do you have to be to start fighting in public and run out crying?! You’re a celebrity, PEOPLE WILL SEE YOU! According to resident Paul Mescal expert, Mrs. Myers, it looks like they are already broken up, but if that isn’t true then their relationship has basically run its course. Maybe Gracie will listen to her own breakup songs (or not because… not all of them are good in our opinion). Honestly, we feel bad for both of them… this relationship never stood a chance. To be honest, part of us thinks it was a PR stunt for “Gladiator” (since they were coincidentally seen out on the same day as Doja Cat and Joseph Quinn). If it isn’t a PR stunt, they should probably break up anyways because this relationship drama is embarrassing for both of them.
5. Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet: HOW ARE THESE TWO STILL TOGETHER?!!! For the record,

one of us (Lilah) is blown away and the other (Ava) is not surprised. We have decided to create a new bet about when they break up with constraints for both of us… because one of us (Ava) didn’t have constraints on her time frame (that same one of us is still technical

ly right and the bet winner). This year, one of us (Ava) bets that they are going to stay together for this year while the other (Lilah) bets that they are going to break up by the end of this year. These two are still weird. It is honestly a miracle that they are still together and “seem to be going strong.” They were recently spotted in Paris together or whatever… WHO CARES!!! These people are odd and the only thing fun about this relationship is the meltdown his stans have whenever they are seen out together. Shoutout to Club Chalamet. Oh, and betting on how long their relationship will last is fun, too. Well, here’s to another year of forced interactions orchestrated by Kris Jenner.
6. Bella Hadid and Adan Banuelos: Dear reader, let us ask you this important question: Who the heck does Bella Hadid think she is? Just because she is dating a cowboy, she suddenly gets a cameo on Yellowstone and has become a cowgirl herself?! These nepos are just shapeshifters at this point (looking at YOU Kylie)! Also, why are all the nepo models obsessed with horses (looking at YOU Kendall Jen ner)? They are just a gazillion peas in an untalented pod. From what we know, Bella Hadid really didn’t have anything to do with the Tex-Mex ranch girl lifestyle (apart from an interest in horses)… and now that she is dating a horse trainer she lived temporarily in a trailer and wears a cowgirl hat to every event. It feels so disingenuous (probably because it is)! Just putting it out there, Bella grew up in an affluent family in LA. Her mom was literally on REAL HOUSEWIVES OF BEVERLY HILLS! She is NOT a cowgirl. Unfor tunately, they are almost certainly go ing to get engaged. She has made him

her whole personality and is not going to give that up anytime soon. Like Lana Del Rey, she is attaching herself to a normal guy and probably going to embrace her trad wife/horsegirl era in the near future. How unfortunate for us.
7. Tom Holland and Zendaya: *angels singing in the background* Ladies and gentlemen, we were wrong and we are thrilled about it! Last year, we said that Tom and Zendaya were just going to date forever and tease their fans until the end of time. So imagine our surprise when Zendaya showed up to the Golden Globes 2025 WEARING AN ENGAGEMENT RING! First of all, it sent us down a rabbit hole for the rest of the night (and the next morning), which is very parasocial but we don’t care. Second of all, for people following their relationship since the beginning, this is such a win! They are honestly being so cute (and private) about their engagement (Zendaya can’t stop looking at her ring during press events), which makes it even more special. Sources did say that they aren’t rushing to get married now that they are engaged, while others claim they are “excitedly planning.” We don’t know what to believe, but we are certain they will get married in the near future. Also, designers have probably been tormenting Law Roach with phone calls begging to design Zendaya’s wedding dress. The world is very much overdue for another Princess Diana wedding dress moment and we can’t wait to see what is next.
8. Leonardo diCaprio and Vittoria Ceretti: She’s 26… the math isn’t mathing with this one. This man… this man… is making a fool of himself. This woman is crazy for dating him. Leonardo diCaprio’s illustrious dating history is the subject of countless jokes at award shows. Why, you may ask? Well, because he doesn’t date anyone past 25! Vittoria, you’re so doomed, it isn’t even funny. He is probably going to miss your birthday to babysit his next girlfriend! They are so sunk that they make the Titanic look like a life raft. Leo, old sport, have you asked her age yet… because you’re not going to like the answer. Did she tell you she was 24? Did she tell you that? Leo, would it be worse to live as a monster or date an older woman? Never mind, WE KNOW YOUR ANSWER! You are already living that choice, pal! Anyway, there is no chance they’ll stay together, especially when he realizes her actual age (disclaimer for those confused: he probably knows her actual age, this is just a joke).

Balloonerism, An Album by Mac Miller
By teGAn inns
Mac Miller will go down in history as one of the most influential artists in the Hip-Hop genre. From an early age, he excelled in music, playing the drums, bass, guitar, and piano, then later adventuring into the singing world.
Miller’s first hit was in 2011, with a song titled “Donald Trump,” which hit the US Billboard Hot 100. Later that year, he released his first studio album, “Blue Slide Park,” which became number one on the Billboard 200. Miller had always loved being able to produce his music and has even helped Vince Staples — a fellow rapper — produce “The Stolen Youth” mixtape. With this passion, he released four more studio albums, combining influences from genres such as jazz, R&B, funk, and soul, showcasing his musical ability

Miller passed away on September 11, 2018. Miller’s music was appreciation for his rhythmic ability and the vulnerability in his lyrics, as he was open about the struggles of living life with an addiction. This is a continuous theme in his newest album, “Balloonerism.”
“Balloonerism” is Miller’s second posthumous album, the first being “Circles,” and it certainly sticks out from his other work. For Miller, “Balloonerism” was an experiment that used jazz samples and took steps into psychedelic music, something new for him and even his genre of music. The album was initially created in 2014, which is noted to be one of the more unique times of Miller’s career; he was

Although the themes are dark, this was how Miller was able to communicate the thoughts he dealt with every day. Many wonder why Miller didn’t release “Balloonerism” when he made it; most believe he found new inspiration with his albums like GO:OD AM, which ended up being released instead. However, Mac Miller did love Balloonerism, so it is hard to know his reasoning for not releasing it. His album is the first big posthumous album of 2025, and it reintroduces the reactions to hearing new music
The Halftime Show: Kendrick Lamar

Super Bowl LIX will go down in history not just for the game itself, but for Kendrick Lamar’s revolutionary performance as the first solo rapper to headline the halftime show. The excitement from his fans was clear from the moment it was announced that Lamar would be performing at this year’s halftime show. He did not disappoint, bringing a powerful, energetic, and visually stunning set that exceeded expectations.
Lamar’s performance was inspirational in how he merged entertainment with his deep and emotional lyrics. It wasn’t just about his hit songs, it was about the storytelling and the symbolism. The show started with “DNA” and later mixed into some of

from artists after their deaths. Posthumous albums are not new; Queen, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, and all the greats have released albums post-mortem. However, hip-hop has claimed the title of the most posthumous albums in the past decade. As these albums have come out, fans and listeners have de bated whether or not they want them. As for Miller’s “Balloonerism,” it did not receive as much concern because Miller’s family made a statement about his dedication to creating the album. They even commissioned artwork for it, reassuring fans that Miller intended to release it but never had the chance. Fans are grateful to hear such an experimental time in Miller’s career; many have even stated it to be the best album he ever made. If you haven’t had a chance to listen yet, I would recommend taking the time to sit down, embrace his lyrics, and hear his story.

mately used the halftime show to make a statement and showcase his talent. Lamar’s fashion was also out standing in his performance. Lamar’s “A Minor” necklace was featured during his performance, which is said to symbolize his song “Not Like Us” and his ongoing feud with Drake. He made sure his visuals matched the deep, complex message of his lyrics. At one point, the stage was designed in an “X” shape with hundreds of lights. His dancers wore USA flag-colored outfits, subtly gesturing to themes of identity, unity, and disagreements that Kendrick has explored throughout his career. As expected, the set was nothing short of breathtaking. He mixed striking colors, lighting, and imagery to create an experience that went
beyond the typical halftime show. One of the most interesting moments of his performance was when “Not Like Us,” was performed. Not long before his performance at the halftime show, Lamar won multiple Grammys for this hit song. “Not Like Us” is a song surrounded by controversy due to its intense lyrics. Fans were waiting to see how he would handle the sensitive parts of the track, especially a controversial line that refers to Drake as a “pedophile.” Lamar chose not to say “pedophile” because it was a controversial lyric aimed directly at Drake. As predicted, he chose to not sing the entire song, instead opting for a powerful instrumental version and parts of the song. He subtly adjusted some of the lyrics, drawing attention away from the
most contentious parts of the track and redirecting focus to the real message.
The show consisted of surprise guest appearances from SZA and Samuel L. Jackson, who was dressed as Uncle Sam. Lamar was joined by SZA to perform their hit songs “All the Stars” and “Luther.” Their performance together was outstanding, and the audience responded with enthusiasm.
The entire show was breathtaking, visually and sonically. It also showed off Lamar’s unique ability to mix entertainment with his meaningful lyrics. As fans and critics alike reflect on the performance, one thing is very clear: Kendrick Lamar has redefined what it means to bring authenticity, artistry, and social commentary to the biggest stage in the world.
“A Complete Unknown” Review
By CArrie Krummen
Capturing the rise to greatness of a singer as immortal as Bob Dylan in the form of a biopic? A frightening endeavor, frankly, but “A Complete Unknown” strikes the perfect chord. Directed by James Mangold, the film features Timothée Chalamet as the enigmatic Bob Dylan — a fearless singer, Nobel Prize-winning lyricist, and the “Voice of a Generation.” The movie does not attempt to make Dylan’s mysterious and controversial nature more marketable; the film simply lets Chalamet play Dylan and uses the title “A Complete Unknown” — a line from Dylan’s most famous song, “Like a Rolling Stone” — to grant freedom to Chalamet’s portrayal of Dylan. As the film explores, everybody seems to want something specific from Dylan, when Dylan just wants to do what he wants to do. For this reason, making a movie about Bob Dylan feels rather antithetical to his resistance to conformity, but “A Complete Unknown” embraces the idiosyncrasies of Dylan and acknowledges that there is more to him than meets the eye — or for our purposes, the ear. Inspired by Elijah Wald’s 2015 book “Dylan Goes Electric! Newport, Seeger, Dylan, and the Night That Split the Sixties,” James Mangold’s “A Complete Unknown” explores Bob Dylan’s rise to prominence in the folk genre, then his sending of the folkies into a tomato-slinging fit when he blasts out rock ‘n’ roll at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. The movie takes place over four years, highlighting Dylan’s ascent in the music industry, battles with popularity and expectations, and on-again-off-again love affairs. The movie’s plot parallels the fluctuations and struggles of 1960s America — an insecure period in which change is at the forefront of people’s minds.

songs become mantras for change. The biopic’s historical attention to detail incorporates a layer of authenticity needed to capture a narrative close to Dylan’s lived experience.
Aside from depicting the era’s tensions, one of the movie’s most impressive offerings is Timothée Chalamet, who trained his voice, studied Dylan’s mannerisms, and learned harmonica and guitar for this role over the course of five years. The result? An accurate imitation of Dylan’s most beloved songs, and an endearing (if also cruel and inscrutable) Bob Dylan fresh out of the 1960s.
being Dylan’s arm candy, Sylvie Russo and Joan Baez both possess a sense of intrinsic ambition and lead successful careers. Russo (Elle Fanning) represents Suze Rotolo, the woman on the cover of Dylan’s album “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan,” and is a civil rights activist who is instrumental in encouraging Dylan to release his first original songs. Baez (Monica Barba ro) is already a powerhouse in the music industry before Dylan; when their paths intersect, they perform enchanting duets together. Through Fanning’s emotion-filled close-ups and Barbaro’s angelic singing, “A Complete Unknown” presents Russo and Baez as nuanced individuals who both influenced and were influenced by Bob Dylan.
As a reminder to the Dylan traditionalists, “A Complete Unknown” is not a documentary; for this reason, long-time Bob Dylan fans may be bothered by minor historical inaccuracies. It should also be noted that the film is rated R for language, and contains scenes of drinking and smoking.
“Songs such as “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall,”
Disclaimers aside, it is indisputable that Chalamet pays a remarkable tribute to Dylan’s legacy, reinforcing Dylan’s songwriting brilliance to steadfast fans, newcomers, and even Bob Dylan himself — who posted his support for Chalamet on X (formerly Twitter). If there is one key takeaway

“The movie takes place over four years, highlighting Dylan’s ascent in the music industry, battles with popularity and expectations, and on-againoff-again love affairs.”
Situated within an America threatened by the Cold War, the film employs scenes of civil rights protests, MLK’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech, and JFK’s announcement of the Cuban Missile Crisis. These tense moments both run in tandem with and contribute to the escalating conflicts of the movie, providing the backdrop against which Dylan’s folk
The film commences with Dylan’s completed hitchhike from Minnesota to New York City in 1961. The leaden city is romantic with opportunities abounding, and Dylan finds his footing after meeting his music idol, Woody Guthrie (Scoot McNairy), and connecting with folk singer Pete Seeger (Edward Norton). Dylan becomes thrust into the folk scene, his heartfelt lyrics and minimalistic use of instruments appealing to individuals championing change.
On late nights in the city, sitting on benches in Central Park, or any quiet moments of leisure, Dylan is seen writing songs. These songs become some of Dylan’s most universally recognized anthems for peace and civil rights. Songs such as “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall,” “Blowin’ in the Wind,” and “The Times They Are a-Changin’” receive covers from Chalamet for the movie’s soundtrack. Audiences now get a sense of Dylan’s genius. The film follows Dylan’s shift from, well, a complete unknown to a global figure. Fans bombard him in public, expecting more and more of him. Physically, Dylan hides behind dark sunglasses and black clothes, lashing out when nobody seems to understand him. Tensions arise when Dylan becomes infatuated with the electric-sounding Stratocaster guitars popularized by the Beatles. After all, the times were a-changing, both musically and historically, and Dylan didn’t want to be stereotyped as the “protest songwriter.” This marks one of the primary conflicts of “A Complete Unknown” — tradition versus change. Another strength of the film is its portrayal of Dylan’s two love interests as multifaceted women. Instead of making these characters’ only purpose
“Blowin’ in the Wind,” and “The Times They Are a-Changin’” receive covers from Chalamet.”
from the film, it is that there isn’t necessarily one single element that has enshrined Dylan’s name in the pantheon of musical legends. As the perplexing Dylan put it himself, “I accept chaos, I’m not sure whether it accepts me.” Indeed, it is this very chaos captured in “A Complete Unknown” that unites older and younger generations in movie theatres to celebrate Bob Dylan’s rejection of predictability.

Winter Sports Recap and Spring Preview
By Justin sun Winter Sports:
The Men’s Varsity Soccer Team has performed well throughout this winter. Not only have they kicked the season off with a close game against Patrick Henry, but they have also won a game 2-0 against Otay Ranch. With only two games left, they have a current score of 5-3-2 and are second in the league for Division 3. Stephen Ye (10), a member of Varsity Soccer and a Central Defensive Midfielder, says that they did well this season and have a six-win record.
“Stephen Ye (10), a member of Varsity Soccer and a Central Defensive Midfielder, says that they did well this season and have a sixwin record.”
He mentions that he “thinks [they] can work on [their] defense as [they] conceded some stupid goals this season.” The key game for them was the one against Vista High School, which gives them a good chance of winning the league this year. While Ye says that he should commit to tackles and being more physical, he also says that all soccer players need to stay cool-headed to analyze the field. Compared to last year, their “team chemistry definitely improved, [one]
can tell that by the increasing cooperation and connections we had both defensively and offensively.”
Other winter sports include Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Women’s Water Polo, and Wrestling. The Women’s Water Polo team is currently third in the league and ranked in the top 300 in California. Arthi Chandra (11) says that although they didn’t win a lot, they definitely grew as a team and had better team chemistry. One of the biggest challenges they had was that seven of their best players graduated from CCA, leaving a gaping hole in both their defense and offense. To overcome this, they assigned new varsity team members to fill the positions. They also adapted a lot to the new team members’ skills and habits. In terms of improvement, they have improved their speed in moving through the water and are catching up to other teams. Something that Chandra says she is working on is “getting in front of [her] defender so that [she] can easily shoot the ball from center rather than struggling [against her defender].” Their key game in the season was against Valley Center High School, which encompassed all the hard work they made this season. The pool was shallower on one end, but they were able to overcome this obstacle by communicating with one another very well and making strong passes. They won that game, with a score of 21-3. Due to the lack of players, Women’s Water Polo has combined Junior Varsity and Varsity together, meaning that some freshmen got to participate. Chandra says “One standout freshman is Evelyn Chen. She has been playing club for years and is a really strong and fast player.”

CCA hosts multiple Spring
Athlete of the Week
By Jadyn HecHt
What started as a childhood interest has transformed into a lifelong passion. Thrisha Boopathi has been an influential player on the basketball team at CCA, earning her the recognition of Athlete of the Week.
When Boopathi was 9 years old, she attended a Master Sports camp where she was taught the fundamentals of the game. From there, she joined club teams and continued to take away valuable experiences from and exposure to competitive players. Boopathi used her middle school years to refine these skills and prepare for high school basketball. With her dedication, perseverance, and unyielding love for the game, she earned a spot on the Varsity Basketball team in her freshman year.
Since then, her passion for the game has only become stronger– especially while playing alongside her friends. With each practice, game, and offseason training session, Boopathi takes the most pride in her consistency and ability to show up. She is a team

Sports Teams, including Varsity Badminton, Baseball, Men’s Golf, Men’s Lacrosse, Women’s Lacrosse, Softball, Gymnastics, Swimming and Diving, Men’s Tennis, Track and Field, Women’s Beach Volleyball, and Men’s Volleyball.
Garrett Happ, the coach for Women’s Beach Volleyball, says that they have lost 12 seniors out of the 16 members and that they “will have a pretty new squad but [he] thinks it will be a good year. A couple of seniors have taken the lead on running some practices before the season has started to get everyone ready!”
Kevin Brown, the coach for Men’s and Women’s Tennis, says that a few promising freshmen can compete at the varsity level. For Men’s Tennis, Brown says that they are either ranked first or second and thus will be participating in the Open Division Championship in May. Brown says “We always miss the seniors when they go on, but [rosters] are immensely deep and will survive.” Tennis is a popular sport in CCA and many aspiring freshman and sophomore players are trying out for Varsity and Junior Varsity.
For Men’s Golf, Tom Lockhart says that although they have lost a decent number of golfers, every year
there are new and promising freshmen, as well as Junior Varsity players who have improved significantly and are now able to play at the Varsity level. Tryouts for Men’s Golf are in February, starting at the practice range at Del Mar Golf Center, then moving onto the Lomas Santa Fe Executive course, and finally to Lomas Santa Fe Country Club. There are many incoming freshmen, but with the current size, almost everyone is guaranteed a spot to play in JV.
Alex Siegel, the coach for Men’s Lacrosse, says that they will return to the playoffs in Division 2 with an even stronger team than last year. Only one defensive senior had graduated, making their defense really strong. On the other hand, while two offensive seniors had graduated, he believes “the off-season development of current players will be able to replace their production.” Siegel also claims, “As for our freshmen, I believe we have one of the best freshman classes we’ve had in a long time. They have been working very hard all off-season and are undoubtedly going to have successful first seasons in our program.” Tryouts are on February 8, 10, and 11. leader and captain for her senior season. She brings unique insight to help make her team as successful as possible. “Being on the court and being able to work on my craft while being surrounded by my closest friends is truly the highlight of my day,” she explained.
Behind every dedicated athlete is a strong support system, and for Boopathi, no one has been more influential than her mother. “My mom inspires me to continue to grow my skills in this sport, as she has been my biggest supporter since day one,” Boothpathi states. She admires her mother’s love for basketball, “making her proud is one of my biggest motivations when it comes to performing well on the court.”
Boopathi also opened up about her challenges as a student-athlete. It’s difficult to manage schedules, especially at an academically rigorous school like CCA. What has worked well for her is ensuring that she finds a perfect balance by staying on top of her schoolwork. Also, Boopathi has treated
basketball as “an outlet for [her] stresses.” That said, she is fully engrossed in every play as it is happening and is proud of her successes in basketball. To Boopathi, “The most memorable moment of my career would have to be when I hit a buzzer-beater before halftime from half-court.”
During her last season playing basketball, Boopathi has made it her goal to play her hardest with every practice and game and genuinely have fun. She is currently undecided whether she will play for a club team in college, so she wants to make sure to cherish every opportunity that she has on the court.

Preview: San Diego’s New MLS Team
By ava Baker

When the Chargers left San Diego for Los Angeles after 56 years, we lost our greatest athletic claim to fame. And while we have an array of other professional sports teams, none rival the popularity of the NFL. However, a new era dawns as San Diego FC is preparing for their inaugural MLS season. Can they be our new emblem? Major League Soccer, or MLS, is the highest men’s soccer league in the United States and Canada, with 30 teams as of 2025. The MLS was started in 1996, after America was filled with excitement after hosting the 1994 Men’s World Cup. While the MLS is not as renowned or respected as European leagues such as the Premier League or La Liga, the games still attract many fans and talented players. Currently, the MLS is known among some circles as being an alternative to retirement for competitive players. Instead of retiring, older players can continue to play in the US for substantial pay at a less competitive but still enter-
taining level of their sport. Some internationally renowned players who have competed in the MLS are David Beckham, Thierry Henry, Clint Dempsey, Wayne Rooney, and Zlatan Ibrahimović. Current famous players in the MLS include Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, and Olivier Giroud –- who were recent international superstars. The influx of these superstars has helped the MLS build some credibility towards world recognition. Currently, the MLS is ranked 9th in the FIFA world soccer league rankings, nestled between Pro League Belgium (8th) and Liga Profesional Argentina (10th). LAFC won the league championship of 2024 but other top teams include LA Galaxy, Inter Miami FC, Columbus Crew, FC Cincinnati, and Seattle Sounders FC.
So, if the MLS has grown in strength and notoriety, how can newbie San Diego FC expect to compete in the 2025 season? After all, none of San Diego’s many soccer teams, despite their success, have ever competed in the MLS. While I could talk about the team vision or unique business model, the secret ingredient that will recruit the best players may simply be San Diego’s natural beauty. Sure, the Seattle Sounders had a great season and have signed great players, but if you’re an aging European superstar and want to enjoy your final years, you’d be more inclined to choose sunny San Diego over rainy Seattle. California appeals to the best international players because of our amazing micro climate, popular attractions, and prominent
culture. One example of such a player is Kevin De Bruyne. Major rumors have been circulating about the longtime Manchester City player coming to the US (specifically SDFC) for the final stretch of his career. The Belgian player would be a great addition to the team as a fan favorite, experienced midfielder, and true superstar. Landing De Bruyne ensures that as the club develops further, more international players will want to play for the SDFC.
Beyond the attractive weather, the team has cultivated a multicultural staff, roster, and fanbase that will be instrumental to its success. The owner of San Diego FC, Mohamed Mansour, is an Egyptian businessman who owns youth academies in Ghana, Egypt, and Denmark. An academy is also being opened in El Cajon for youth players in the county as a means of selecting and nurturing the next generation of talent. Additionally, the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation are the first Native American tribe to ever own a soccer team in the United States. Manny Machado, a beloved San Diego Padre, also has a stake in the ownership group. This multicultural approach, along with the proximity to Mexico and its dedicated soccer fan base adds Mexican fans as potential support for San Diego FC in the incoming season.
SDFC will have their first match February 23, 2025 against the usually dominant LA Galaxy. In order to predict the results, you have to know that playing Galaxy is always a challenging experience. With strong
international players and a renewed desire to compete, LA Galaxy came in second place last season. Therefore, the debut game will be a very good indicator for the future of this team. With notable players from Mexico, Denmark, the US, Colombia, Norway, Germany, Panama, Northern Ireland, Ghana, and more, the rich roster combines styles of play from all over the world. While I’m not willing to predict the winner, I know the new players and mix of playing styles will make for a very interesting game.
The best way to make SDFC our number one sports team is to actually go out and support them. The only way these teams will be able to continue representing us is if we go out to Snapdragon Stadium and support them, whether they be SDFC or another San Diego team. On TV or in person, the only guarantee of having great local teams is by showing support any way you can. Once the season is up and running for San Diego FC, only time will tell if they are able to create a dynasty in our beautiful beachside city.

Equality on the Playing Field: Women in Sports
By Brianna Morrison
How well do you know famous athletes such as LeBron James, Tom Brady, Wayne Gretzky, Tiger Woods, etc? You probably know most, if not all, of them. But what about Lisa Leslie, Valerie Ziegenfuss, Nastia Liukin, or Se-ri Pak?
Women play a pivotal role in sports, but do not get the attention they deserve. Sports have often been a male-dominated area, and many female athletes are not celebrated to the extent to which they should be.
“Women play a pivotal role in sports, but do not get the attention they deserve.”
National Women in Sports Day became official when Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5606 and declared Feb. 4, 1987 as the day to recognize women athletes. Now, February is considered National Women in Sports Month, with one day of the first week paying special attention to this significant area. Not only does it honor women athletes we see on the field, court, or screen, but it also recognizes girls and women of all ages who participate in sports. This designation also advocates for the importance of physical fitness, mental health, self-esteem, and gender equality. However, we shouldn’t just acknowledge these athletes in February; they should be championed all year round.
The Olympics have been around for ages, but it was not until 1900 that women were included as athletes. Moreover, it wasn’t until 2012 that every country had a woman athlete included in their team. The gender equity movement hit a big milestone this past year in the 2024 Olympics, where the games reached full gender equality. Still, there is so much
progress to be made in the areas of leadership, coaching staff, and other roles.
The progression of gender equality would not be where it is today without the efforts of trailblazers such as Billie Jean King, and Title IX (passed in 1972), which provides equal participation of males and females in all programs in federally funded schools. King’s work profoundly influenced women’s athletics as she created the Women’s Sports Foundation and womenSports, the first magazine dedicated to women in athletics. Through her countless efforts, King advocated for women’s vital place in the athletics world.
Women’s sports have come far in the past few years, especially recently with the rise of social media and Caitlin Clark’s domination in basketball. There are thousands of female athletes doing incredible things all around the world and working hard to inspire the next generation.

“National Women in Sports Day became official when Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5606 and declared Feb. 4, 1987 as the day to recognize women athletes.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Brianna Salvatore Dueck, a former professional basketball player in Switzerland and collegiate star at UC Davis. She now owns her own company, Uplift Sports and Entertainment, which works with professional athletes and content creators to promote the growth of women’s sports and encourage investment in these sports and athletes’ brands. She believes that in order to expand recognition of women’s sports, more coverage is needed. According to a 2023 study, women’s sports only comprise about 15% of all sports coverage. This has increased greatly in the past few years, but there is still a long way to go from being equitable. Salvatore Dueck states, “Sports are such an integral part of our culture, and showcasing women crushing it in sports — something that has been largely viewed as a male-dominated thing — is very important for societal norms. When we see women achieving at the highest level, it says something for women and girls.” Sponsorship, broadcasting, and social media are essential for more recognition in this area. “Currently, sponsors are starting to invest a lot more in women’s sports but there is still a huge gap between financing and funding on the men’s side versus the woman’s side,” Salvatore Dueck continues. Viewership is increasing as well, but more options are needed to find these unexplored sports. Salvatore Dueck notes that it is important to continue to tell the backstory of female athletes on social media because those shared stories engage

fans directly. These days, more and more content is being shown which is a boon to girls and young women. Sports involvement builds confidence and character, which are characteristics of strong leadershipthat benefit women in other aspects of life. Empowering the next generation of young women can not be stressed enough. You can help make an impact by participating, supporting, and inspiring.
Go check out The San Diego Wave women’s soccer games or the San Diego Mojo women’s volleyball! Or, watch the WNBA, PWHL, LPGA, NWSL, WTA, or Athletes Unlimited on television and social media. There are a plethora of opportunities to see women crushing it in their field of play. These sports are picking up steam and expanding in our media-filled world. Salvatore Dueck adds, “Women’s sports are just starting to scratch the surface in terms of what is possible and where we’re going to go.”
Women belong in every aspect of sports and should always feel like they have a place. Breaking down the gender stereotypes innate to the sports industry is imperative to the progress of women’s sports and gender equality as a whole.
