design application

The community kitchen at 23 Calumet Street in Boston, Massachusetts, draws influence from the tectonic qualities of Marcel Breuer's iconic Wassily Chair. Known for its unconventional use of materials and emphasis on solid and void forms, the chair hosts a strong, enveloped joint connection that serves as the foundation for this architectural application. By balancing solid and void spaces and considering the natural slope of the site, the cantilievered structure consists of two rectilinear forms interconnected by a cylintrical element, creating traversing pathways that allow users to weave through and around the site. This approach allows the design to blend in with the surrounding row houses while also introducing a new, contrasting design arrangement to the area.
