mendment I: “Congress shall make no law . . . abridging the right of the people peaceably to assemble. . .”. Here we are for the 39th consecutive year at the Legendary Buffalo Chip for what is nominally the 80th Sturgis Rally. Wow! What a year it has been. We’d been looking forward to this year for so long. Then in March a wrench was thrown into every plan. A pandemic was declared and many of those with the power of government and media began instilling fear and imposing restrictions on our freedoms. The Sturgis Buffalo Chip flies the flag that represents the Bill of Rights of the American Constitution and we’re danged proud to do so. You’re here celebrating the freedoms we thought to be the birthright of all Americans. Brothers and Sisters of different mothers—we love you and your spirit. We sit between two wheels, hands on the handlebars, the wind in our faces, appreciating like no others the constant changes in our environments, calculating our risks every moment, making our own choices of where to go, how to get there and how to conduct ourselves when we get there. Personal Responsibility. Don’t Tread On Me. Live Free or Die. Enjoy every moment of this life we’re blessed to have. And, with that, we thank you for sharing your lives with us as we all continue to Ride Free and Take Risks. Woody

80TH ANNUAL STURGIS MOTORCYCLE RALLY AT THE BUFFALO CHIP

2020 Buffalo Chip Signature Rides Riding to do good BRYAN HARLEY

Special to the Journal

Graced with geological wonders and unbridled beauty, riding in the Black Hills is almost transcendental. This magic is a big reason riders come from the four corners of the earth to ride here each August during the Sturgis Rally. Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or a first-timer, one of the best ways to see this beautiful country, share some camaraderie, and support charitable causes is to join in one of the Buffalo Chip’s “Legendary Rides.” Over the past 13 years the Legends Ride presented by GEICO Motorcycle has established itself as one of the most preeminent events of Sturgis. From Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler to R. Lee “Gunny” Ermey, a long list of celebrities have graced the ride over the years. The 2020 Legends Ride Road Captain is Academy Award-nominated actor Tom Berenger. Best known for his roles in Platoon and Major League, Berenger is a diehard rider who’s selflessly lent his support to the Legends Ride for years. A few years back Berenger shared a funny story of his first motorcycle, a 450cc Honda, and how on one of his first rides he hit an oil patch, fishtailed and went down. Being chased by a German Shepherd on the same motorcycle was another fond memory. It’s little pearls like this that make this signature ride special. The Legends Ride begins in the historic Wild West-themed town of Deadwood. It’s a street party at the new Outlaw Square in front of the Silverado-Franklin Hotel & Casino as music fills the air, motorcycles roll in, and celebrities begin to arrive and mingle with the crowd. The girls from the International Bikini Team, long-time supporters of the Legends Ride, have a knack for fostering a festive spirit. So do the kids of the Black Hills Special Olympics who show up every year. Their excitement is unbeatable, and the Special Olympics is one of the main benefactors from the benefit ride. To date, the Legends Ride has raised over a half million dollars for local charities and organizations, and overall the Buffalo Chip has raised nearly a million dollars through all of its charitable endeavors. This year The Chip aims to break the million dollar mark as magnanimity is always the pervasive spirit surrounding the Legends Ride.

The Ride stages in the Wild West Town of Deadwood. Riders will gather in the new Outlaw Square for the first time this year. This year’s ride takes place Monday, August 10, and begins at 11 a.m. in front of the historic Franklin Hotel in Deadwood. The 2020 charities are Special Olympics South Dakota – Rapid City Flame and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame. In addition to Berenger, this year’s special guests include actor/musician Sean McNabb (Sons of Anarchy/Dokken), former Green Bay Packer star lineman Earl Dotson, and a veritable Who’s Who of custom motorcycle builders, from Cory and Zach Ness to the always colorful Rick Fairless, to Jerry and David Covington and many more. Plenty of riders out there are race fans. If you love to ride your motorcycle and love NASCAR, the 2nd annual Rusty Wallace Ride is tailor-made for you. Wallace, a NASCAR ironman who won 55 races competing in 16 straight seasons, has invited some of his racing buddies and NASCAR friends to come hang out and support his second annual charity ride. The legendary list includes NASCAR Vice Chairman Mike Helton, Clint Bowyer, Walker “The Legend” Evans, Don “The Snake” Prudhomme, and Everyone who’s anyone goes to the Legends Ride. From last year, here’s Charlie Brechtel, Steve Wallace. The day will kick off with a Gloria Struck and Diva Amy.

party at Black Hills Harley-Davidson and an opportunity to meet the special guests and maybe even get an autograph or two. The riders will mount up for a brand-new route this year, one picked out by Wallace himself. Everybody will meet back up at the Buffalo Chip for a private reception including food and drinks. A silent auction will be held with incredible items up for grabs including a Daytona 500 replica hood autographed by the 2020 Daytona 500 starting grid. The incredible motorcycle Cory Ness of Arlen Ness Enterprises customized for Rusty Wallace, a 2020 HarleyDavidson FLXH Street Glide, will also go to its new owner as the bike is being sold off for charity. This year’s list of Rusty Wallace Ride charities include South Dakota Special Olympics – Rapid City Flame, All Kids Bike and the NASCAR Foundation charities. Grab a ticket and we’ll see you Wednesday, August 12, at Black Hills Harley-Davidson off Exit 55 in Rapid City at 10 a.m. For 11 years now, the Biker Belles Ride & Celebration has been empowering women motorcyclists. “When we created the event in 2009, we’d hoped it would change people’s lives for the better, and it’s amazing to see over a decade later how much it truly has. I can’t wait to see where the Biker Belles takes us in the years to come, and I hope you will join us on the journey,” said Biker Belles Program Manager Toni Woodruff. Please see RIDES, Page 6

It’s for the kids! Legends Riders like Moonshiner Josh Owens support the Special Olympics and other great causes.

Spirit and camaraderie are the hallmarks of the Biker Belles Celebration.

Making Musical Memories at the 80th Rally BRYAN HARLEY

unny how many of my fondest memories over the past decade involve the Buffalo Chip’s Wolfman Jack Amphitheater. Stevie Nicks in 2011 definitely stands out. The skies toward town were turning dark purple. A giant backdrop on stage whipped like a sail before blowing off altogether. Fingers of lightning lit up the horizon, the storm circling the natural bowl of The Chip’s amphitheater while the Bella Donna sang onstage, her black chiffon skirts and blonde hair whipping in the wind as she looked every part a Welsh witch conjuring a storm when she broke into “Rhiannon.” Old-timers spun their partners as they danced next to their Harleys, the song returning their youth. Others stood mesmerized by Stevie Nicks’ enchanting voice, unfazed by the threatening thunderstorm or the outside world, for at that moment the

ergy and his “Rebel Soul” attitude filtered into the crowd who danced and sang along as the band played a long list of hits. Chip? While just about every musical festival around has gotten nixed, The Chip has worked tirelessly to maintain its reputation as “The Largest Music Festival in Motorcycling” by once again bringing rally-goers nine straight days of live music. Bands are missing performing live for their and fans are craving a good, live show. The Buffalo Chip is eager to bridge the gap between the two. The Chip team has been working diligently figuring out how to keep people safe

at shows. In part, they’re expanding on the example set by the old-timers dancing next to their Harleys at the Stevie Nicks show. Motorcycles have long been a part of the Buffalo Chip concert experience, so it’s been running through different configurations of the amphitheater to allow bike parking in rows along the front of the stage. It’s a ridein concert, just like the old days! People can enjoy the show next to their motorcycle in a pocket of personal space. The Buffalo Chip also has branded its own hand sani-

tizer. During the height of the pandemic, the Buffalo Chip transitioned from making whiskey at Buffalo Chip Spirits to making hand sanitizer in support of the community. There’ll definitely be no shortage of hand sanitizer at The Chip. Fittingly, the first band to play Friday August 7, has a biggest hit called “Flirtin’ with Disaster.” The band’s hard hitting Southern rock has endeared itself to bikers for decades and they’ve been a staple on the rally circuit. Being the first band to take

the Woflman Jack stage for the 80th Sturgis Rally definitely makes Molly Hatchet a memorable moment candidate. The Guess Who will carry the classic rock torch Saturday night, August 8, and lots of trips down memory lane are sure to be in store as Night Ranger (Monday, August 10), 38 Special (Thursday, August 13), and Quiet Riot (Friday, August 14) will help give everybody’s “Mental Health” an adjustment. Add the Flaunt Girls bawdy brand of burlesque into the nightly festivities along with Hank Rotten’s voice bellowing throughout the amphitheater and The Best Party Anywhere will continue to make

The BlueFrog Band will dish out a heapin’ dose of Americana Thursday, August 13, opening for 38 Special. Smash Mouth teams up with Trapt on Sunday, August 9, while The Reverend Horton Heat will deliver Texas rockabilly straight

CUSTOM LIVES HERE From show-stopping divas to regular riders BRYAN HARLEY

Special to the Journal

The Buffalo Chip loves custom motorcycles so much it erected the largest toscale V-Twin sculpture in the world at the entrance to its free-access area called the CrossRoads. In the colossal shadows of that 30-foot-tall sculpture you’ll find some of the most incredible motorcycles in the world during the annual Sturgis Rally as the Buffalo Chip becomes the center of the custom bike show universe. This year, the nine shows The Chip is hosting hold more significance than ever.

Since the onset of the pandemic, builders have been relegated to showcasing their craftsmanship in online, virtual bike shows. And while those who pioneered the concept during challenging times deserve to be commended, it’s difficult to fully appreciate the artistry of a custom motorcycle in two-dimensions. The work deserves to be savored like a sip of properly aged whiskey, to be inspected from all angles in order to appreciate how metal masters meld the worlds of form and function. Luckily, like the gigantic V-Twin that towers above the entrance to The Chip, there’s plenty of room at the CrossRoads to spread motorcycles about during the bike shows Please see CUSTOM, Page 15

so all can enjoy socially distanced. For the past 11 years, the Buffalo Chip’s Motorcycles as Art exhibition curated by Michael Lichter has been a star attraction for the venue. The annual collection of custom motorcycles, artwork, memorabilia, and photographs is world-class. This year’s exhibit is going to be particularly special because every participant in “Heavy Mettle—Motorcycles and Art with Moxie” has built 20 or more bikes for 20 or more years and is still in business today. It’s also Lichter’s 20th Sturgis exhibition. That theme bears even more relevance today. Cumulatively, the builders in the 2020 Motorcycles as Art show roughly bring “1,000 years of experience” to the table. This group didn’t read the custom motorcycle history books. They wrote them. Knowing the competitive nature of this year’s class of builders, undoubtedly they’re going to want to impress their contemporaries, and this is one show you’re not going to want to miss. Check it for free out all week long inside the Buffalo Chip Event Center near the East Gate. The Rat’s Hole Custom Chopper Show is another one you won’t want to miss as Ted Smith and the Rat’s Hole crew will be celebrating its 32nd annual show in Sturgis. The hand-sculpted Big Daddy Rat trophies are the most unique awards on the custom bike scene and winning one is a tremendous honor. The Rat’s Hole always attracts some of the most eclectic motorcycles around, from oddities like the world’s first tattooed motorcycle to curiosities like a Harley outfitted with two front wheels that tilt like a traditional two-wheeler. Traditionally the Rat’s Hole “Best of Show” winner is marched out on the Buffalo Chip’s Wolfman Jack Stage just before the evening’s headliners to receive the “Big Daddy Rat” trophy, the cherry on top of an unforgettable experience, but protocols might alter that tradition this year. The Rat’s Hole goes down Thursday, August 13, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Buffalo Chip CrossRoads. The Sportster Showdown has quickly become one of the marquee shows at The Chip. The Sportster is, after all, the longest continually produced motorcycle in the Harley lineup, and its versatility has endeared it to legions of fans. From choppers to drag racers to cross-country tourers, the Sportster is only limited by people’s imagination. Host Pat Patterson and the Led Sled Customs crew know how to have a good time. The show kicks off Tuesday, August 11, at 2 p.m. with awards presented

at 5 p.m. Hang around The Chip’s Camp Zero for the Afterparty Anarchy Games presented by Go Fast Don’t Die. The carousel of custom bike shows will continue to spin all week long. Both the FXR Show & Dyna Mixer, hosted by South Da-

kota’s own Joe Mielke, and the Buffalo Chip V-Twin Visionary Performance Motorcycle Show, are rising stars on the Sturgis scene. The FXR has a diehard fanbase, evident by the riders who abuse the heralded Harley at the Bell Brawl, the tire-destroying stunt

show that generally follows the mixer. The FXR Show is all about those fans and the stories behind their bikes. It also raises money for charity. V-Twin Visionary Jeff Please see CUSTOM, Page 19

Holt is one of the hardest-working, most genuine guys in the industry, a big reason the long-time magazine editor, wrencher, racer and Harley performance specialist has a following that’s growing bigger every week. Both these shows inject the custom scene with much-needed young blood. Did you know that about one in five riders these days is a woman? More ladies than ever are riding and wrenching these days, and they’re just as proud of their handiwork as the guys. Thanks to the Buffalo Chip, they’ve got a place to showcase their pride and joy. The Women & Wheels Bike Show is an all-women’s ride-in bike show held during the Buffalo Chip’s 12th annual Biker Belles Celebration. Scheduled for the CrossRoads on Tuesday, August 11, it’s free to enter and free to attend. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. while the bike show fires up at 10:30 a.m. Exceptional rides will be mentioned at the Biker Belles luncheon immediately following the show. If none of those pique your interest, maybe baggers is your thing. If this is the case then the Florida Full Throttle Magazine All Brands Bike Show & Bagger Blastoff on Wednesday, August 12, is right up your

alley. Like choppers? The Buffalo Chip School’s Out Chopper Show host Mondo Porras knows a thing or two about customizing choppers, and there’s never any shortage of raked-out, old school cool scoots rolling around the Black Hills. Sturgis Hall of Famer Porras has been building them long for nigh on 50 years, so

expect to see some groovy machines at the School’s Out Chopper Show Saturday, August 8. Then there’s the Camp Zero Mini Bike Show. Camp Zero is the center of good old-fashioned fun at The Chip, so what better place to hold a show for custom mini bikes. Little pull-start Colemans and other minis have boomed in popularity the last

few years, the subversive following quickly becoming more mainstream. Coordinated by none other than Snap Fabrications Joe Mielke, this is a first-ever show. Big fun can be had on little bikes, and plenty of fun will be had at Camp Zero come Tuesday, August 11, at the maiden Mini Bike Show.

hipsters ride hard and play hard, and The Chip knows all too well how the rigors of the road on those hard rides take their toll. People ride for thousands of miles to get here, then ride more once they’re here. Hard not to with all the great roads and natural beauty in the Black HIlls. Ultimately, the motorcycle that got you here might need a little TLC to get you back home. Luckily, The Chip has built a new one-stop moto shop for everything you’ll need, from parts to installation, in the heart of the free-access CrossRoads. The new Buffalo Chip Garage presented by Fozzy’s Cycle Shop is a 2,400-squarefoot facility featuring a hand-picked team of Harley-certified mechanics. If Paul “Fozzy” Fosdyck isn’t wrenching on your bike, rest assured, this talented team can address any of your mechanical needs. The Buffalo Chip Garage’s retail center is stocked with plenty of goods from sponsors Continental Tires, Yuasa Batteries, and Bassani Exhaust along with other top vendors. Continental’s offering a smoking deal on its ContiTour Special where you get a front tire free when you buy a rear from the Buffalo Chip Garage . Riders are undoubtedly going to be laying down some rubber, so be sure to check those tread depths before rolling home. If that wasn’t enough incentive, in celebration of its grand opening, bike owners who make major purchases of parts and accessories and have them installed get a free Yuasa battery (limited to the first 150). “We built our six-bay garage so that all the riders who need repairs done or want new parts installed can have that work done by certified mechanics onsite,” said Buffalo Chip President Rod Woodruff. The Buffalo Chip Garage couldn’t be situated in a better location. There’s free bike parking, quick in-and-out service (but sadly no In-n-Out burgers!), and access to the non-stop entertainment and events at the free-access CrossRoads, so there’s no shortage of something to do while your bike is getting worked on. The CrossRoads hosts custom bike shows daily, stunt shows regularly, and bands like Big Skillet and The Hawkeyes rock the Big Engine Bar stage throughout the week. From tire changes and smokin’ deals on Continentals to oil changes, installs, and battery swaps, the Buffalo Chip Garage can do it all. Bikes with fried electronics is

common at the rally, especially on older motorcycles. Doing the biker shuffle down Lazelle and Main isn’t kind to old bikes. No worries, Fozzy and the team at the Garage gotcha covered. They can also do audio installation. Once the work’s all

done, be sure to get your bike spiffed up at the Miss Buffalo Chip Bike Wash. The Buffalo Chip Garage is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. You can’t miss the new tin building towering above the CrossRoads.

McKeag Original Anchors Charity Auction Legends Ride Unveiling BRYAN HARLEY

Special to the Journal

The 80th anniversary Sturgis Rally is going to be one for the record books. Way things have been going, Sturgis might be the lone holdout in a rally-less summer. This makes the 2020 Legends Ride painting by gifted artist Darren McKeag even more collectible. A bidding fury’s sure to break out when this beauty goes up for auction Monday, August 10, at the 13th Annual Legends Ride. Doesn’t get much cooler than two old school characters on a Shovel and a Pan rolling by Mount Rushmore on their way to the Sturgis Buffalo Chip’s Legends Ride. The colors pop, and thanks to their vibrancy you can almost feel the rumble of their engines and sense that the riders are boogieing along. The painting’s chock full of American imagery—famous presidents, the unmistakable Buffalo Chip sign, Sturgis in big, bold letters, and the freedom to ride. The 80th anniversary banner connects the brothers of the open road at the wheels, the timestamp demarcating this painting as one-of-a-kind. If you’ve ever checked out one of the Buffalo Chip’s Motorcycles as Art exhibitions curated by Michael Licther, you’ve probably seen McKeag’s work. He’s been a featured artist several times, and his artwork has adorned everything in the exhibit, from hanging on the walls to custom motorcycle tanks and helmets to beneath people’s skin. Literally, as McKeag is also an accomplished tattoo artist. Born and raised in Iowa, McKeag’s been an artist almost as long as he’s been able to hold something to draw with. Motorcycles have also been a constant since childhood. As a kid, Darren rode around on the tank of his father’s ’65 Panhead. By the time he was a teen he was already hitting up ‘70s bike shows. He spent six years in the Army and Army Reserve before pursuing art full time. About 10 years ago, he discovered some artwork he did from when he was about 12 or 13 and realized that what he drew then was the same style of art he does today. “My art has truly come full circle for me, and I understand that this is my path. Drawing, tattooing, and painting art that involves motorbikes, cars and kulture, is my art and what I do daily,” said McKeag. He also said he’s super honored to paint the 80th anniversary piece for the Leg-

Darren McKeag created this original painting specifically for the 2020 Legends Ride auction.

Visual and tattoo artist Darren McKeag ends Ride. The 36” X 48” acrylic on canvas original painting is imbued with both McKeag’s roots and the roots of the Sturgis Rally. It goes up for auction in Outlaw

Square across from the Historic Franklin Hotel on Monday, August 10, during the 13th annual Legends Ride. To date, the Legends Ride has raised $985,000 for lo-

cal charities and non-profits like the Black Hills Special Olympics and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame. Maybe the sale of this year’s commemorative painting will push that number over the million-dollar mark! If you’d like to meet the artist, Darren McKeag will be at the aforementioned Sturgis Motorcycle Museum on Friday, August 7, 8, 9 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. He will also be a featured guest at the 13th annual Legends Ride.

ou know what they say about the best laid plans. While the Buffalo Chip intended on once again showcasing the intense bar bangin’ action of American Flat Track and Roland Sands SuperHooligans at the 80th anniversary Sturgis Rally, fate had other plans. While it would have been easy to toss in your cards, that’s not the way the Buffalo Chip rolls. Enter the Xtreem Flat Track Buffalo Chip Super TT! Never hurts to spice things up once in a while and the Buffalo Chip Super TT is going to be fire! Luckily, the Buffalo Chip has a prime piece of racing real estate right across the street from the campground, so Xtreem Flat Track President Jake Latimer and his father Frank, racers themselves, hooked up with AFT SuperTwins rider Rob “Bugs” Pearson to map out a new track at The Chip’s PowerSports Complex. With all the real estate over there, the Xtreme Flat Track Buffalo Chip Super TT is going to be longer, wider, faster, and wilder than your average TT. While a TT generally has to have at least one

race and champions crowned in each class at the end of a grueling run of seven races in eight days. The Buffalo Chip had another ace up its sleeve because the Crazy John Street Drags are back again this year. This old school, runwhat-ya-brung drag race down the middle of the Buffalo Chip’s amphitheater has quickly become a fan favorite. Sketchiness rules as bike’s back ends wiggle like fish on a line as fearless riders launch down the narrow patch of pavement at speeds up to 120 mph. It’s a hoot as baggers, Dynas, high-powered Harleys and the occasional lightning-quick Buell blast down the strip. The Street Drag Invitational with Crazy John will light up the Buffalo Chip’s Wolfman Jack Amphitheater Tuesday, August 11. You can do a racing double-header that day. Watch the Crazy John drags, then shoot across the street and catch the Buffalo Chip Super TT. The riveting racing action doesn’t stop there. Kicking off the Buffalo Chip’s 2020 Race Series is the high-flying action of Renegades Off-Road Racing. Just about every type of high-powered four-wheeler will be ripping up the

hillside at the Buffalo Chip PowerSports Complex. There’s a class for everybody, from Junior UTV all the way up to Pro UTV. When these bad boys unleash all that horsepower, look out as dirt’s gonna fly. The action gets started Friday, August 7, as the Renegades Off-Road Race Trials take place from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. while the races are the following day from 12 to 6 p.m. The Chip’s final ace is the crew of the Gambler 500. This maniacal group of mini-bike loving, livingon-the-fringe types invaded Camp Zero a couple years ago, and no one’s been able to get rid of them since. Gamblers bring a whole ‘nother level of craziness to The Chip. These guys and gals show how much fun can be had on little bikes

as Coleman 200cc Trail Mini Bikes buzz like flies in and around the Buffalo Chip. The carnival’s nonstop at Camp Zero across the street as Gamblers jam-pack the week with everything from Mini TT’s to Endurocross to drag races to a fullblown custom mini bike show. At the daily Gambler 500 Mini Bike TT and GoPowersports Barrel Races, riders can win up to $2,000 worth of prizes courtesy of GoPowersports and Sena. You don’t even have to bring your own mini bike because they’ll have a handful to borrow thanks to Coleman Powersports, SnapFabrications, and Camp Zero. The shenanigans don’t stop there as Gambler instigator Jason Lightner’s going to huck his legendary Porsche off a glorious pile

of dirt in an event affectionately dubbed Gambler Hooptie X. Later in the week, they’re also planning the Gambler 500 Hooptie Huck, so if you’ve got a hooptie too and would like to launch that piece into the air, come on out and join the fun. Hooptie X kicks off Sunday, August 9, at high noon at Camp

Zero while Hooptie Huck takes place Thursday, August 13, at the same location. When the best laid plans fall apart, shuffle the deck and draw again. Sturgis is rooted in racing, and The Chip stays true to those roots no matter what hand it’s dealt.

Cory Ness Street Glide Custom Built for a NASCAR legend BRYAN HARLEY

Special to the Journal

No pressure building a custom bike for NASCAR Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace, right? Not only would the motorcycle have to meet the standards of a man who made his living standing in victory lane, the motorcycle’s a star attraction of the Buffalo Chip’s second annual Rusty Wallace Ride. The benefit ride raises money for the NASCAR Foundation, All Kids Bike and SD Special Olympics – Rapid City Flame and the sale of the one-of-a-kind custom motorcycle brings in a big chunk of change. The list of people you’d trust with such an important task is short. Luckily, the Buffalo Chip and the Ness family go way back, so when looking for somebody to spearhead the project, The Chip didn’t have to think too hard. “I enjoyed working with Rusty. Certain

things he liked, certain things I liked, and we blended design ideas together,” said Cory Ness, president of Arlen Ness Enterprises. Before implementing those design ideas, they needed a bike. Again, having friends in the right places paid off as another of The Chip’s long-time allies, Black Hills Harley-Davidson, graciously donated a brand spankin’ new 2020 FLXH Street Glide with a Milwaukee-Eight 107 engine to the cause. As fine as Harley’s new Street Glide is, though, the Ness family is known for making show-stoppers, so Cory and the Ness team set about the task of taking the Glide to the next level. The front end now flexes bigger muscles thanks to the addition of Ness’ Wide Tire Kit and Hot Leg fork legs. The wider 180mm tire needed a wider fender, too, and the Ness Wrapper front fender fits like a glove. Then there’s the wheels. The Ness Y-spoked Wheels feature not only a Please see NESS, Page 32

new design that hasn’t even hit the market yet, the titanium finish is new to the market as well, and right now the only place you’re going to find these wheels is on the Rusty Wallace Ride Street Glide. While Harley’s Milwaukee-Eight is a mighty fine engine, dressing it up in a full complement of covers and accents from the Ness 10 Gauge collection makes it even finer. Like the wheels, the covers are dressed up in Ness’ new titanium finish. The engine ensemble’s piece de resistance might possibly be the latest Ness Sidekick air cleaner. The air cleaner’s filter is generously wide in the front so it’s funneling copious amounts of air to the engine. Of course, a free-breathing engine is going to be more powerful, and who doesn’t like more power? Another slick little feature is the Sidekick’s transparent cover, which allows riders to see what’s going on inside the air cleaner. The custom exhaust system Rinehart Racing made for the Rusty Wallace Ride Street Glide will also give it an extra kick in the pants. Turns out, Wallace is friends with the Rinehart folks, which is Please see NESS, Page 34

a good thing because the muffler needed to be extended an extra five inches to fit the Ness Down-and-Out Saddlebag bottoms and custom back fender Ness built specifically for this motorcycle. With a bit of newfound power thanks to its air cleaner and exhaust, boosting the motorcycle’s braking performance was also important, and billet Arlen Ness 4-piston caliper brakes and rotors were just the ticket. The list of premium Ness parts doesn’t stop there. The Ness MX Floorboards are a fresh upgrade to the stodgy stock footrests. Better yet, like a fine wine they’re paired with Ness Air Trax shifter pegs and arms. The motorcycle grips also come from the Ness Air Trax line. Ness Modular handlebars are a big upgrade because they have a high degree of adjustability and can be tailor-fit to a rider. Just another hot ticket item coming from the Ness factory you’ll find on this contemporary machine. LaPera also had a hand in making this motorcycle special by crafting a beautiful custom leather seat for it. And speaking of beautiful, the paint job Mazz Enterprises out of Arizona did is simply stunning. Between the stripes and underlying geometric honeycomb pattern, the paint is deep and lustrous. Smartly applied splashes of titanium paint bring about a homogenous feel to the motorcycle’s clean and classy lines. The Cory Ness-customized FLHX Street Glide will be on display at Black Hills Harley-Davidson during the rally if you’d like to stop by and check it out. Better bring your checkbook because once you see this beauty in person, you’re going to want to take it home. We’ll find out exactly who the lucky new owner is Wednesday, August 12, 2020, when they are handed the keys at the second annual Rusty Wallace Ride.

Power & Beauty from J&P Cycles You can win this H-D Low Rider S BRYAN HARLEY

Special to the Journal

If you’re going to party like a rock star at the Sturgis Rally, you need a rock star motorcycle. And when the winner of the 2020 sweepstakes bike is on the Buffalo Chip’s main stage receiving the keys to this asphalt-destroying Softail on Friday night, August 14, they are going to indeed be living like a rock star! The Buffalo Chip teamed up with J&P Cycles, GEICO Motorcycle, and Black Hills Harley-Davidson for the annual

giveaway. J&P Cycles’ Pat Garvin turned wrenches on the project, tapping into his keen awareness of what’s current and cool in the industry. The Low Rider S returned to Harley’s lineup this year after a couple years’ hiatus, the latest version sporting the new Softail frame. With an 1868cc Milwaukee-Eight 114 engine, an inverted fork, and cast aluminum wheels, it’s ready to rock straight from the factory. Since the stock Low Rider S has such clean lines and a solid stance, Garvin didn’t want to completely change the lines of the bike, but he did crank up the volume to 10. While the new Softail chassis and Milwaukee-Eight powerplant are already Please see J&P, Page 38

solid, this doesn’t mean there’s not room for improvement. Out went the stock shock, in went a high-performance Progressive 465 unit, which added an extra inch of height and bumped up clearance. With the upgraded suspension and greater lean angles the new owner will be achieving, some sticky rubber was in order, so a set of Metzeler CruiseTec tires were spooned on to keep this thing glued to the pavement. The four-valve MilwaukeeEight 114 engine already packs a righteous punch, but never one to settle for status quo, J&P Cycles uncorked it a bit with a Vance & Hines VO2 Rogue Intake and Stainless Steel 2-into-1 Upsweep Exhaust. The addition of a Vance & Hines Fuelpak FP3 ensures all the newfound tire-shredding horsepower is dialed in proper. The bike’s stock lighting is lackluster, so it was replaced by Kuryakyn Kellerman LEDs. The Kellerman Atto Satin Black Turn Signals are super small but super bright. Hidden underneath the switch housings on the handlebars, you wouldn’t even know they’re there at a glance. The bulbous stock turn signals on the back were likewise ditched for a set of Kuryakyn Kellermans.

Tidying up the backside didn’t stop there. A fender-hugging Milwaukee Twins Black Curved License Plate Mount looks so much cleaner than the stock billboard-style license plate. Further complementing the sleek look of the tail section is a thinner Lectric Lighting Co. Slantback LED taillight with a sweet smoke lens. For hand and foot controls, the good peeps at Biltwell came through with their new Alumicore grips and Punisher footpegs, aggressively styled, wide pegs that fit the attitude of the

bike to a T. The Performance Machine Vision Arrow Mirrors are also a natural fit and offer wide-ranging adjustability to boot. For the finishing touches, the tins were shipped to Copperhead Graphics where they laid down this electric mix of gold leaf and gold metal flake paint, coated in candy gold, which keeps the look gangster while still paying homage to that original Low Rider S look and feel. A Le Pera Kickflip Seat was just the ticket for a wicked bike like this. Le Pera did the project a solid

by adding custom gold stitching to match the paint. The way this bike pulls, the Le Pera Kickflip is the perfect seat because it’ll really hold you in the pocket when you launch this thing. And it will take off like a rocket. The 2020 Low Rider S was already a mean machine, but now it’s next-level, in both looks and performance. Fit for a rock star. Enter to win this beauty before August 10, 2020, at buffalochip.com/sweepstakes or at the GEICO tent.
