Fur Trade Days, now in its 43rd year, celebrates the furtrading era and serves as an annual gathering for friends, families and newcomers to Chadron.

You can find many artifacts of this era from both the fur traders and their Native American counterparts at the Museum of

the Fur Trade three miles east of Chadron. Or check out the Primitive Rendezvous on Bordeaux Road east and south of Chadron for an immersive experience with the Buckskinners.

Downtown Events Thursday, July 11 5-10 p.m. – Fur Trade Days Carnival (Downtown Chadron) Fur Trade Days Carnival tickets are available pre-sale at the Chadron Chamber of Commerce for $20. Tickets at the gate will be $25. The carnival’s 13 rides and food wagons will be set up at the intersection of East Second and Bordeaux streets.

Bordeaux Road Events Wednesday, July 10 All Day – Primitive Rendezvous Setup (3 miles East and 8 miles south on Bordeaux Road) The Buckskinners Camp takes visitors a step back in time to the era of the Mountain Men. The authentic Rendezvous is sponsored by the Bordeaux Creek Fur Trade and Muzzleloading Association. Located 3 1/2 miles east of Chadron on Highway 20 and 8 miles south on Bordeaux Road, the camp is set up in an area with fresh water, shade and great scenery.

The rendezvous is very much like those of the fur trade era.

Campers trade their handiwork and wares as the original rendezvous participants did. People at the camp sell items that relate to the period, including guns, shooting supplies, clothing and cookware.

The rendezvous was important to the mountain men, Indians and fur companies in the 1800s. A site was chosen each year to host the rendezvous and traders came from far and wide to pick up supplies to necessary to survive. The fur companies would exchange goods such as guns, powder, lead, traps, knives, axes or clothing for the furs of the mountainmen.

A bonus for the sightseer at the Buckskinners Camp is the traditional dress of the 1800s that buckskinners wear during the rendezvous.

Special shooting events for Buckskinner participants include a variety of shooting matches with rifle, pistol, and trade guns, contests for youth and women, and a candlelight shoot. There is also competition in the skills of tomahawk and knife throwing, a cooking contest, and plenty of carousing afterwards.

The alley, located between Main Street and Chadron Avenue in the 100 block is home to three new murals. They’re a great place to take photos and enjoy the talents of local artists. The murals were completed in June by volunteer artists of all ages. Come back and visit again because more murals are in the planning stages on seven buildings throughout Chadron, and interest is growing.

Other public art pieces are also planned, including two painted pianos that will be available in public places for individuals to play and enjoy. Contact the Chadron Chamber of Commerce to learn more about Art Alley and the public art initiative.

10th Street Events

The annual Classics in the Park Car Show at Wilson Park is the perfect spot for car lovers during Fur Trade Days.

Friday, July 12 6 p.m. – Classics in the Park Car Show Pre-registration (Wilson Park) and informal cruise. Cars will be displayed on Main Street following the cruise.

Saturday, July 13 6:30 a.m. – Registration for Rotary Colter Run (CSC Armstrong Building) The annual Colter Run, named for famed fur-trader John Colter who escaped Blackfoot Indians on foot, naked, running and hiking 200 miles in 10 days to reach safety, features 5K and 10K races and a 2-mile fun walk. Age groups start at 14 and under for the 5K and 18 and under for the 10K. Team George members will again participate, raising funds through t-shirt sales to benefit scholarships for CSC students in the college’s Comparative Justice/ Legal Studies Abroad program in honor of the late George

Watson, a former CSC professor and Colter Run organizer who died in 2010 of pancreatic cancer. Shirts can be purchased at Outlaw Printers prior to race day or during race registration.

Donations to the cause can also be made to the CSC Foundation for the Team George Scholarship Fund.

Harper Watson was one of three Chadron 7 year olds who ran the 5k during the Colter Run. This year’s Colter Run will start and end at the Nelson PAC, allowing runners to loop through the renovated Elliott Field and see themselves on the jumbotron.

The Greenwood Cemetery Tours feature actors portraying historical characters with connections to the region. The tours raise funds to maintain the cemetery kiosk.

his year’s Greenwood Cemetery Tours will feature nine characters from the region’s early days. They are as follows: Ray and Faye Graves, famous for Graves Glass Plates, this pioneer photography couple documented Chadron’s early days. They will be portrayed by Jim and Carole Wright.

Frank O’Rourke, an early cowboy in the area who worked for the famed Spade Ranch. He will be portrayed by his grandson Jim O’Rourke, who still lies on the family land.

William Martens was known as Wilhelm until his arrival in the U.S. in 1881. He still has de-

scendants living in the area. Rex Cogdill will portray Martens.

Harvey Anderson and his father John built the red barn on the land east of town that became a landmark for many early travelers. Anderson will be portrayed by John Axtell.

The Waltz Family was chosen for this year’s tour in large part because of the big stone at their family plot. Bill Huntington will act out this role.

Josiah Gillespie was famous for his part in the Chadron to Chicago Horse Race, winning the race even though he did not cross the finish line first.

He will be portrayed by Jacob Rissler.

Rattlesnake Pete was another rider in the Chadron to Chicago Horse Race with a casual relationship to the truth. Jim Margetts will play Rattlesnake Pete.
