he juiciest burger, the most thirst-quenching beer and the most relaxing massage. The answers are all here in Rapid City Journal’s 2018 Best of the Black Hills.

The votes have been cast, the totals have been tallied and the Best of the Black Hills are now

crowned.

We received more than 2,700 nominations of businesses you believed should be named the very best in our region.

Then it was again your turn to decide who should be the winners.

More than 5,200 people cast 55,389 votes for the businesses in the 143 sub-categories.

Those votes were tallied, and first-, second- and thirdplace winners were named. First place winners will receive a plaque and second and third place winners will receive a certificate that they can display at their places of business.

Consumers, when you see the Best of the Black Hills logo, you will know they were recognized as a leader in their category by the people of the Black Hills.

The top vote-getters in the 15 major categories also received a short write-up in this publication about their business.

PARKWAY CAR WASH Parkway Car Wash has been a family-owned business since 1974. The original building was built as a self-service car wash. Over the years, they have built on to the facility, adding a storage unit, and automatic wash bay in 1987.

Owner Tom Stone believes what makes them unique from other car washes in the area is their commitment to customer service. As of now, they are the only car wash that offers interior vehicle cleaning.

Stone said going the extra mile for their customers is why they were voted best of the best.

“You try to go above and beyond for your customers. It’s a service industry, and it’s our job to provide a service. That’s what makes us great,” he said.

THE MAN SALON Unsatisfied by the lack of men’s hair services, Shawn Ericsson opened the first Man Salon location in 2008 in Sioux Falls. In 2010, his friend Justin Christman opened the first Rapid City location at Rushmore Crossing.

The response from the community and surrounding areas inspired them to open a second location off West Main Street in 2012.

One thing that makes them unique is that they focus almost entirely on men’s haircuts and services. They are a full service salon and provide many options for men.

“We have a certain number of female clientele, but the majority of our customers are men.

Not a lot of places have that. Men are getting more conscious about their appearance, so we want to provide them with a manly atmosphere for them to do that,” Christman said.

Christman said what makes them the best is what they provide for the community. The salon offers daily discount for active and retired military members, police and fireman, as well as college students.

“We call it our ‘Heroes and Poor College Kids discount,’” he said.

SILVERADO FRANKLIN HOTEL The Silverado-Franklin hotel first came to be when a group of business leaders in Deadwood attempted to construct a large downtown hotel, but ran into financial problems. A business man by the name of Harris Franklin offered to match any contribution dollar-for-dollar for construction in 1902. Harris became an officer and chief shareholder in the Deadwood Hotel Company, and the finished project was named in his honor. When it was completed in 1903, the Franklin Hotel was the most luxurious lodging in Deadwood.

The Silverado Gaming Establishment was started in 1990 by a group of partners in Rapid City. In 2005, they purchased the Franklin Hotel and completed a $7 million renovation project. The casino just celebrated its 28th anniversary in April.

“We think that having a historic property is very ‘Deadwood.’ We feel like we offer an authentic Deadwood experience to our customers.” said Tom Rensch, managing partner.

What makes them unique is their world-class customer service. “We believe our staff are second to none and they are the reason we are able to offer the best customer service and over-all experience in the industry,” he said.

HENRY ROY PHOTOGRAPHY Henry Roy Photography started in 2011 when owner Roy Ulrich, a transport deputy for the Pennington County Sheriff’s Department, picked up a camera and started taking photos in his spare time.

Ulrich posted the photos to his Facebook page and began receiving enquires from his friends about pricing and photo sessions. The business took off when he left his position at the sheriff’s department in 2012 to pursue photography fulltime.

Henry Roy Photography recently expanded, moving into a new facility in June to accommodate the increase in business. They provide a number of services to help make photo sessions more complete. They also provide military homecomings at no charge to give back to the community.

Jerry’s Cakes and Donuts got its start over 40 years ago when owners Jerry and Le Ann Schubert began in different aspects of the business. Jerry attended school to become a baker and got his first job with Rolling Pin Bakery, while wife Le Ann attended school to become a bookkeeper, getting her first job with Mr. Donuts.

The couple took ownership of a second Mr. Donuts location in 1989, and have been running it ever since.

From there, Jerry’s Cakes and Donuts has been a staple in

the community. The business is family owned, and they make everything on their menu from scratch.

“The shop has been our baby for many years, we’ve worked hard to build it from what it was, she said.

Their ties to the community are why they believe their customers voted them the best.

“Our customers have been with us from the beginning, they’ve watched our kids grow up. We truly appreciate our customers. Rapid City has been good to us,” she said.

The Days of ‘76 Rodeo was founded by a group of businessman in an effort to draw more people to the town of Deadwood. The rodeo and the parade have been drawing crowds for 96 years.

“It’s quite an honor to be named the ‘Best of,’ we’re pretty humbled by that,” said Dawn Burns, sales director.

The historic aspect and setting of the event are why The Days of ‘76 Rodeo has become a fan favorite.

“We’ve tried to keep everything as historically accurate as we can with any reconstruction. We have an incredible stock, it’s a fast-moving rodeo that keeps the audience engaged,” she said.

The rodeo has also won several awards.

They are an 18-time award-winning rodeo and 14 consecutive Medium Rodeo of the Year winners, being the only rodeo to win in that category. They were also inducted into the PRCA Hall of Fame in 2011.

“We have memorabilia in the museum, so it’s a very humbling experience,” she said.

STURGIS CROSSFIT Sturgis Crossfit opened in December 2013, when co-owners Craig Kirk and Josh Wilson teamed up to offer a new type of fitness facility for the Sturgis area.
