WELCOME From the President o f the Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society On behalf of the Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society, it is my privilege to welcome you to the National Concert Hall and to the Society’s presentation of The Pirates o f Penzance.

The Pirates is the third of the successfid thirteen comic operas created by those two great geniuses of musical theatre - Gilbert and Sullivan.

Because of the failure to secure the American performing rights of their previous show (HM S Pinafore), Pirates had its premier performance in the Fifth Avenue Theatre, New York on the 31st December 1879. The English premiere was in the Bijou Theatre in Paignton on the previous night.

The London premiere was not until April 1880.

Pirates was a smash hit, so much so, that within three months of its opening, the impresario Richard D ’Oyly Carte had organised four companies touring the show across America.

Indeed, it is doubtful that the prolific twenty-year partnership between Mr. G. and Mr. S. would have lasted without the persuasive managerial skills of D ’Oyly Carte As years went by the popularity of Pirates waned due greatly to the emergence of ‘The Biggies’ - The M ikado, The Gondoliers, The Yeomen o f the Guard ttc. However, in 1980 its popularity was restored by the brilliant production by Joseph Papp which took Broadway and the West End by storm.

The new Pirates was full of vigour, vitality and contained many inovative delights including new arrangements to Sullivan’s music with some up-tempo rhythyms. Yes, Pirates was back in popularity.

So sit back and enjoy the topsy-turvy world of Gilbert and the melodic music of Sullivan as you meet The Pirates o f Penzance'.

DODO O'HAGAN A N APPRgCIATlON It is with great sadness that we announce the recent death of one of our most prominent members, Dodo O ’Hagan.

Dodo gave over fifty years of wholehearted service to the R&R, both on the stage and on various committees. It is fair to say that she devoted the greater part of her life to the Society.

On stage she played many cameo roles and always performed them with seriousness and conviction. We recall her playing Inez in “The Gondoliers”, her Yente in “Fiddler on the Roof” and her Lady Eynsford Hill in “My Fair Lady”. But it was for her service on many committees that she will be remembered.

Dodo was valiant in her efforts to keep the R&R up to the high standards it had set itself. To that end, she would argue her points with verve and determination. Our Associate Members got to know her well through her work as Assistant Honorary Treasurer. She served for many years on Casting Committees and was very much involved in devising our concerts at the National Concert Hall.

Her boundless enthusiasm for the Society was fittingly rewarded when she was made a ‘Life Member’ of the R&R in 2008.

Her always elegant presence will be missed. We send our sincere condolences to her relatives and friends.

THE PIRATES Op PENZANCE The Pirates of Penzance opens in a pirate den on the Cornish coast of Britain where they raise a toast to the good health of young Frederic who is to complete his apprenticeship that very day at noon and become a full-fledged pirate!

Frederic, though, has a secret to reveal: he longs to leave his seafaring life behind but resists not wanting to unduly burden one o f his fellows. But who could Frederic possibly burden by breaking free of his pirate ways? The pirates are indeed perplexed but Ruth, a servant of the band, steps forward and reveals she is the cause of Frederic’s problems. In fact, many years ago she made a mistake that would cost the young lad dearly: W hen Frederic was a child his father wished him to become a ships pilot so he sent his son along with his guardian Ruth to do his bidding. Being hard of hearing, though, she mistakenly confused the word pilot with pirate and apprenticed the young lad to the fearsome bunch of pirates until his 21st birthday. To make matters worse, so embarrassed was she that rather than face Frederic’s father and correct her mistake, she too signed on with the band for a life on the sea!

The years pass by and eventually Frederic’s 21" birthday arrives. Fiowever, even on this wonderful occasion he is confronted with a conundrum: on one hand he is obliged to leave his band of pirate friends as soon as his apprenticeship expires: on the other hand, if he does become a free man, his lofty sense of duty would force him to betray his friends and reveal their very existence! Still, the Pirate King reminds Frederic that he need not yet decide as he is still under contract until noon that day.

The Pirate King is also perplexed by an interesting problem: despite their best efforts they can not seem to turn a profit from their pirate ways, but why? Frederic knows why, for this is no ordinary band of mercenary pirates: They are the not-so-fierce Pirates of Penzance and, being orphans themselves, are bound by a deep-seated compassion for others. But word has gotten around about this bunch of push-over pirates and every ship they capture claims to have a crew of orphans aboard! So, bound by their orphan-pirate duty they release their captives along with any loot they steal!

W hat then is to become of poor Ruth once Frederic is a free man? Well, she is then told she must accompany her young charge when he departs his pirate life but all the while Frederic is consumed by his desire to find a woman to wed. As noon arrives and Frederic is released he tries one final time to convince his sea mates to give up their ways but his please fall on deaf ears. He is to leave defeated with Ruth, his nurse maid of old.

Frederic’s thoughts turn once again to finding a wife - but as his sole experience of womankind is limited to Ruth, how is he ever to know if he happens to meet a beautiful woman? Worse still is he has no idea if Ruth is even vaguely attractive: so he asks! Vanity gets the better of her and she attempts to spin him some white lies about her alleged beauty. Soon, though a group o f fair maidens appear in the distance and the game is well and truly up for Ruth! Frederic looks on from afar and with a love-struck satirica' nod to the Victorian sanctity of marriage, he serenades them and reveals himself to be a former pirate asking if any will marry him. All but the beautiful Mabel refuse and she and Frederic enter the cave alone to ‘converse...’ Their conversation eventually leads to the inevitable conclusion that they are to be wed.

Consumed with jealousy at Frederic and Mabel’s pending nuptials the pirates all lay claim to the other maidens. We soon find out that the girls are none other than the daughters of the esteemed

Major General Stanley. In brusque fashion The Pirate King informs General Stanley of the marriages while his daughters plead to their father that they are being coerced into it by pirates. The Major roundly objects to the notion of having pirates as his sons in-law and the pirates are none too pleased at the prospect of having such a stuffy father-in-law either! Having reached such an awful standoff, Stanley refuses to consent to the weddings and the pirates threaten to capture him if he does not. W hat is the Major General to do...? He too has heard the rumours about a bunch soft-hearted pirates, so he chances his arm and claims to be an orphan himself True to form the pirates buckle under the weight of their guilty conscience and set him free.

Act II opens as Frederic and Mabel find General Stanley in the cemetery on his estate. Wracked by guilt and in deep mental anguish he decries his transgressions in lying to the pirates and betraying his ancestors. It appears though that the Major is not one to let actual family lineage get in the way of a good story. His ancestors didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t own the property at all and he only bought it from another family a year earlier. But as far as he is concerned, Stanley bought the ancestry of the building along with the rest o f it! (throughout his career Gilbert made no secret o f his disdain and contempt for the trappings of the Victorian infatuation with ancestry and titled heredity â&#x20AC;&#x201D;a theme which bubbles to the surface again here).

By now Mabel and Frederic are adamant that they simply must either convince the pirates to take a better road or face the consequences so they enlist the help of the Sergeant of Police and his force to raid them. Unfortunately, to say the Sergeant is incompetent and cowardly is to understate the matter and the police reluctantly agree to raiding the pirates but are saved when Ruth and the Pirate King burst in and notify Frederic that he is still bound to his contract (and is still a pirate) due to a minor detail: he was born on February 29 in a leap year and therefore has only had five birthdays rather than the 21 required by his apprentice contract! Bound by honour, duty and the small matter o f his contract, Frederic is forced to leave Mabel and rejoin the pirates but lets the secret out that Stanley lied about being an orphan. An angry Pirate King then declares he will raid Stanleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s estate that night.

Soon afterwards the police continue to hunt down the pirates and the two bands finally confront each other. A short battle results with the pirates winning. Stanley is captured and set to be executed until Ruth declares allegiance to Queen Victoria. The pirates and police soon follow similarly and it appears the pirates are not true pirates at all. They are loyal to Britain and reveal that they are not orphans at all but rather old noblemen who have gone bad. The Major General finally has the prospect of having many noblemen who have gone wrong as sons-in-law so he quickly gives his blessing to the marriages and the weddings proceed without hindrance.

Gearoid G rant graduated from U C D in 1972 and since then has com bined a freelance career as conductor with a career in music education.

H e has recently retired from teaching in the FCJ School in Bunclody where over the years he established a “school of music" with over 250 students playing in 2 very large ensembles.

Gearoid started conducting in RTE over 30 years ago and has performed with R T EC O and RTEN SO on television, in Concert Flails, and even in the rain with a 6,000 strong choir in Lansdowne Road!

In 1990 Gearoid devised and continues to present and conduct each year the acclaimed The Irish Tim es/R T£ series “M usic in the Classroom” which introduces music to 30,000 Irish children annually, with 24 performances at the National Concert Hall in D ublin and in m ^ o r venues around Ireland. T he programme is developed in conjunction with RTE, T he Irish Times and the D epartm ent o f Education.

Gearoid has conducted the National Youth Orchestra o f Ireland since its inception and has never missed a concert in nearly 30 years. T he Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society has had similar service. For the last 10 years he has conducted the Cross Border Orchestra o f Ireland (including a sell-out concert in Carnegie Hall) and he organises and conducts the Hallelujah Christmas Concert at the Point Theatre with over 9,000 children singing.

W hen he has the time Gearoid conducts orchestras in Europe, America and Africa in Halls from Cape Town to Boston in a wide repertoire ranging from Mozart to Sondheim. He has too intention o f stopping just yet!

Marina has enjoyed great success as a dancer and choreographer performing throughout Ireland on television and in all major venues.

Her work, ranging from musical to opera has earned her many accolades with career highlights to date including winning both the AIMS and Bangor Festival’s Best Choreographer Award for M e and M y Girl, going on to co-choreograph the professional production o f the same show at the Olympia Theatre and also choreographing the Dublin premiere of the iconic show The Producers for the R&R in 2009.

Marina’s association with the Society began initially as a dancer and progressed to choreographing musicals and concerts at the National Concert Hall and Gaiety Theatre too numerous to mention. She has choreographed several o f the Society’s Gilbert & Sullivan productions including the 2002 production o f The Pirates o f Penzance and last year’s critically acclaimed The M ikado to name but a few.

She is delighted to continue her association with the R& R as Choreographer for this season and would like to thank the entire cast for their very hard work and dedication over the last number of months.

JACiqE CURgAN OLOHAN, Chokus DmgcroR^ Jackie has a distinguished career as a performer, musician, director, chorus director and teacher. Her musical education thrived under Sr. Agnes Nolan at St. Mary’s College, Arklow, Eithne Troy at the College of Music and subsequently U CD from which she graduated with a B Mus. (Hons.) By day she can be found teaching music at St. Gerard’s School, Bray, Co. Wicklow.

She has been Music Director and Conductor for many show premieres 'm dn6\n^ Anything Goes in 1991 with DAYMS directed by Brian Merriman and was awarded Best Music Director at the Waterford International Festi^'al of Light Opera for Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods. This, and conducting her late father, Chris, in Annie at the Olympia, she regards as her highlights to date.

Jackie is delighted to continue her association with the R&R as the Society’s Chorus Director and welcomes all the new members on board.

NORA aRQURgg, PRQDucnoN M anager^ Nora joined the R & R as ASM to Stage Manager Seamus O ’Neill. She has worked in all the backstage departments including Props, Lighting, Sound, Stage Management and Production Management for the R&R in both the Gaiet)f Theatre and The National Concert Hall.

Nora has acted as Stage Manager and Lighting Designer/Operator for many societies and groups, notably, St. Louis, Loreto, Take Four and John Player TOPS (Aer Lingus). She has stage managed and lit many award winning shows in Waterford and Bangor. She is a recipient of an AIMS award for Best Stage Manager and has conducted workshops on Stage Management for AIMS.

Mary has been involved with numerous musical societies since 1977 both on and off stage. In 1987 she joined the Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society performing in several shows and working behind the scenes on costumes. She received AIMS and Tops of the Town awards for Best Costumes. A trained architect, Edward has performed as singer and dancer with the R&R in Fiddler on the Roof, The Gondoliers, Anything Goes, The Produceis and numerous concerts. He was honoured to take over the role of Wardrobe Master from illustrious predecessors in 2009. He has performed with Katherine Lynch (live shows), Dublin Burlesque Tassel Club, G2 and is a founding Board member o f ABSOLUT Gay Theatre Festival Dublin (Chair of Artistic Panel). Having overseen costumes, hair and make-up for SM C O ’s Footloose^ they have appointed him Production Designer for their 2012 production o f Hair. Awards include Set and Costumes for Slaughterhouse Swan (Focus Theatre). Edward would like to thank the R&R Wardrobe Mistress Mary Cregg for her sure, quiet industriousness. THE CAST NICOLA MULLIGAN, M a b el Irish Soprano Nicola Mulligan is a native o f Louth and read Music at the Royal Irish Academy o f Music and has recently completed a Bachelor o f Arts in Music Performance graduating with first class honours. She studied with Dr. Veronica D unne and is currently studying with renowned vocal coach Mary Brennan. Nicola is a multiple prizewinner at ESB Electric Ireland Feis Ceoil and was also awarded the N C H Young Musician o f the Future. Solo work includes M ozarts Coronation Mass, Bach’s M agnificat and Handel’s Messiah with orchestras such as the RTE Concert Orchestra and Orchestra of St. Cecilia. Nicola has performed with Opera Theatre Company, Lyric Opera, Opera Ireland, Festival Productions and Opera Montalto Italy. Operatic roles include Gianetta and Casilda in The Gondoliers, Josephine in H M S Pinafore, Barbarina in Le N ozze di Figaro, Arminda in La Finta Giardiniera, Clorinda in La Cenerentola, Galatea in Acis and Galatea, Bastienna in Bastien and Bastienna, Nella in Gianni Schicchi, Valencienne in The Merry Widow and concert performances o f Musetta in La Boh'eme, Gilda in Rigoletto and Zerlina in Don Giovanni. Recording and broadcasting include various programmes on RTE Television, RTE Lyric FM and Louth-Meath FM as well as C D recordings as guest soloist with St. Peter’s Male Voice Choir.

Brian is a 3'“*year Music Performance student at T he Royal Irish Academy of Music under Mary Brennan. His initial training began with First Active Children’s Theatre School under the direction o f his m other Maureen and brother Sean. H e has been involved in numerous performances with them playing such roles as Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar, Tony in Copacabana and Tyrone in Fame. Brian has been involved extensively in Musical Theatre, Opera, Operetta and Oratorio around the country. He has taken on roles such as The Beast in Beauty and the Beast, Marius in Les Miserables, Curly in Oklahoma!, Danny Gilmartin in Calamity Jane, Norm anno in Lucia D i Lammermoor, Marco in The Gondoliers, Nanki Poo in The M ikado, Ralph Rackstraw in H .M .S Pinafore, Lord Tolloler in lolanthe, Parpignol in La Bohefne, Gherardo in Gianni Schicchi and Giuseppe in La Traviata. In 2010, he received the AIMS award for Best Male Singer. No stranger to the Gilbert & Sullivan canon, this is Jimmy’s fourth time toj)lay the Major General, having also appeared as Sir Joseph Porter in H .M .S. Pinafore und the Duke o f Plaza Toro in The Gondoliers, both with the R&R. Over thirty-five years on the stage have provided him with a variety of roles and opportunities to appear in Drama, Variety and Musicals as well as presenting. He has worked with many Musical Societies in Dublin and elsewhere. In more recent years he has presented several concerts for the R&R and enjoyed three Christmas seasons at the National Concert Hall with Festival Productions presentation o f The W izard o f Oz. Playing the Major General in tonight’s performance tops off a busy year for Jimmy. He recreated the role o f Tin Man in The W izard o fO z for Festival Productions in the Wexford Opera House last Christmas, followed by his Lyric Opera debut as Njegus in The Merry Widow here at the National Concert Hall in February. Presenting the Hear Our Songs! concert followed for the R& R in March, in addition to which he has appeared in The Percy French Story with Entertainment Unlimited in several venues throughout the year.

Jackie has appeared with the R&R, Glasnevin Musical Society, Jim MolJoy Productions and Festival Productions in a variety o f Gilbert & Sullivan roles including Ruth in The Pirates o f Penzance and Katisha in Festival Productions award-winning The Mikado for which she won the Best Character Actress at the Buxton International Festival o f Gilbert & Sullivan in 2007.

This “...the hilarious comic mezzo” (The Irish Times) returned as Ruth in The Pirates o f Penzance and The Duchess of Plaza Toro in The Gondoliers, the Fairy Queen in lolanthe and recently as Katisha in last year’s critically acclaimed production The Mikado all at the National Concert Hall.

Jackie is delighted to reprise the role of Ruth with the Society and is enjoying sharing the stage with her son Ciaran once more.

Michael completed his doctoral studies in U CD two years ago and currently works as a teacher in the city centre. This is his twelfth show with the R&R, having joined the Society in 2004.

His most recent roles include Earl Mountararat in lolanthe in November 2008, Bill Bobstay in 2009’s production of H M S Pinafore and Pooh Bah in last year’s production of The Mikado, all in the National Concert Hall. He has played the minor roles of Flora’s Servant in La Traviata and Bogdanovitch in The Merry Widow for Lyric Opera. He has also performed in the chorus many times for Lyric Opera, counting Turandot, Tosca, I Due Foscari, Lucia di Lammermoor and Norma among his favourites.

He served on the Society’s Executive Committee from 2005 until 2009. Michael is very pleased to be playing the part of the Sergeant of Police and would like to thank all the cast and production team for making the entire experience such an enjoyable one.

CIARAN OLOHAN, S a m u e l A past pupil o f Blackrock College, Ciaran had his first experience o f G&S at age 13 playing the role o f Captain Corcoran in H .M .S Pinafore under the late Fr. Jarleth Dowling. While in school, he played the role o f Naphtali in Joseph and performed in two original productions, Ochon and Brothers in Arms, both written by Toirleac O ’Brien.

As a student o f Phillip O ’Reilly, Ciaran received vocal coaching at the Royal Irish Academy of Music for six years, during which time he also received a diploma in performance. Ciaran also completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Greek and Roman Civilisation at University College Dublin. W ith the R&R, Ciaran has sung the title role of The Mikado in the successful production of the same name, and also appeared as a soloist in the concert Hear Our Songs.

W ith Lyric Opera, Ciaran has sung in the chorus for such operas as Lucia di Lammermoor, Don Giovani and most recently, II Trovatore. Closer to home in his native Wicklow, he has performed with M.Y.Th Productions, playing roles in such tides as Billy Elliot, Ragtime, Evita to name but a few. In May o f this year Ciaran acted as assistant Musical Director for Blackrock College’s original production o f Going Forward, written by Brian Savage.

Ciaran comes from an extremely musical family, he is particularly proud to be a grandson o f the late Chris Curran and Josephine Scanlon, both o f whom had very distinguished careers, including roles in the R&R. His own parents are no different, his father Sean has been involved in music all o f his life, and his mother Jackie has been the biggest musical inspiration in life to date. He is very excited and privileged to be sharing the stage with her once again tonight.

Muireann Mulrooney (soprano) is reading her B.Mus. Performance degree at the D IT Conservatory o f Music & Drama where she studies with Edith Forrest and Trudi Carberry. She has been a prize winner in Feis Cecil and at the Arklow Music Festival and featured regularly as a soloist with St. Patrick’s College Choir from which she graduated with B. Ed Honours in 2010. She has also regularly performed in lunchtime concerts at the college.

For Glasnevin Music Society Muireann appeared in The Pirates o f Penzance and as a soloist in Showstoppers a t Christmas, both at the National Concert Hall in 2010. Up-coming appearances include the title role in an excerpt from Massenett’s M anon with the D.I.T. Opera Ensemble and also as a soloist with Glasnevin Musical Society’s forthcoming Showstoppers a t Christmas.

Muireann is delighted to be a part o f the R&R’s production tonight.

LAUR^ MUHgHY, E^ te Laura is in her final year as an undergraduate studying for her BA in Performance at the Royal Irish Academy of Music where she studies with Mary Brennan and Brenda Hurley.

Laura spent the summer on tour with the prestigious Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival throughout Turkey, Spain and Germany performing works such as Mahler’s Second Symphony, H andels Creation and Carl Orflf s Carmina Burana among other works. She also performed H andel’s Messiah at the renowned Santander Music Festival. Laura has taken part in a number of productions at home including the chorus of The Merry Widow with Lyric O pera at the National Concert Hall and was also lucky enough to perform in the chorus of Opera Ireland’s final production of Puccini’s Tosca. She has had the privilege of working with a num ber o f esteemed conductors as part of her work with SHMF including R olf Beck, Steven Parkman, Christoph Eschenbach, Stephen Connolly, Daniel Reuss and Christopher Hogwood.

Laura has also been successfiil in competition this year winning the German Government C up for Bach aria at die ESB Electric Ireland Feis Ceoil and the English Song Prize and bursary in the Irene Sandford Competition at the Royal Irish Academy o f Music. O ther accolades include the Mezzo-Soprano competition, the Vincent O ’Brien C up and the Denis O ’Sullivan Medal at the ESB Electric Ireland Feis Ceoil. Laura was invited by the John McCormack Society to sing at their annual concert in the Mansion House and was the recipient of the Oliver O ’Brien Bursary.

Future engagements include playing the role of Ino in RIAM’s production of Handel’s Semele and performing Handel’s Solomon at the Gottingen Musik Festival, Germany in the New Year.

CATHY BYRJJE, ISOBEL C athy Byrne is 24 years old and is currently working as an Occupational Therapist in the Central Remedial Clinic, Clontarf, Dublin.

She began her vocal training with Aoife Dunne, and studies violin under David Lee. She studies Classical Ballet and Modern Dance Theatre with the Dex McGloughlin School of Ballet in Rathmichael, Cc. Dublin.

Cathy is no stranger to the National Concert Hall having appeared here over the years in the RTE/Irish Times Music in the Classroom Series devised by Gearoid Grant with both the RTE Concert Orchestra and the RTE National Symphony Orchestra. She has also toured the country with the RTE Concert Orchestra w ith these educational programmes.

This is Cathy’s seventh season with the R&R and is delighted to be performing in this production of Pirates having enjoyed all her previous experiences with the Society, including solos in Let’s Celebrate the Magic o f the Musicals and Hear O ur Songs!

PHILIP B Y I^ E A N APPRgCIATION It is with great sadness that we announce the recent death of one of our most prominent members, Philip Byrne.

Philip joined the Society in the mid-seventies and being tall, dark and handsome, and possessing a fine baritone voice, was the ideal leading man.

Among the roles he played were Danilo in The Merry Widow and Gaylord Ravenal in Showboat.

Philip sang professionally all over Ireland and the UK and toured extensively in the USA. We shall miss his charming smile, his easy manner, for Philip was the most affable of men.

He met his lovely wife Kathy in the R&R and so to Kathy and the children, Conor and Aoife, we send our deepest sympathies P.C.

1913 -2013 A Century of Song As the R&R approaches its 100* Birthday we are delighted to bring you news of an exciting programme of events to mark this wonderful occasion in this, our Century of Song!

In addition to our twice-yearly productions we will be staging smaller, intimate performances and producing a commemorative book on the Society’s rich history setting it out as a marker for Dubhn’s cultural landscape.
