Mad About Musicals Last year the Society brought M ad A b o u t Musicals to the National Concert Hall for the first time and it proved to be such a success with Dublin audiences, that it was decided to present four m ore concert versions from p opu la r musicals again this year.

This sea son ’s music is by Sigmund R o m berg, Frank Loesser, Irving Berlin and Je rom e Kern. These four com posers have given us a feast of rom antic melodies plus a sense of fun which has been enjoyed by both perform ers and audiences over many years.

N oted for its en co uragem en t of new talent the R & R at the present time, has, in the Society, a wealth of ta lented, attractive, young p e rfo rm ­ ers. I am sure that you will leave the Concert Hall tonight feeling that you have had a really wonderful evening.

A f t e r se co n d ary school, she jo in ed th e family gro u p T h e D u a n e Sisters - a n d w o r k e d extensively in Irelan d b e fo re m oving to L o n d o n . T heir success in w inning O p p o rtu n ity K n o c k s for seven consecutive w eek s led to a busy television and theatrical c a r e e r which cu lm in ated in th e D u a n e Sisters w in ning T h e V a rie ty Club A w a rd o f G r e a t B ritain in 1979.

GEAROn) GRANT G earoid studied music with the late Dr. J. O ’Reilly in the College of Music and graduated with a B.Mus. from U C D . Subsequently, he studied conducting with, am o n g others, G eorge Hurst in London. Since then he has worked as conductor, music director and arranger fo r most Irish theatrical companies in works ranging from Mozart to Sondheim.

A t present, he is resident conductor with the R & R. G e a ro id has appeared as guest conductor with the Irish C h a m b e r O rchestra, O ur L ady’s Choral Society and both the National Symphony and R T E Concert orches­ tras.

AISLING GREEN Aisling has been dancing since the age of 4 and appeared in her first musical at 11 with OLMS Sallynoggin. Since then she has worked with many societies in shows such as The Wizard o f Oz, The M ikado. The King and /a n d Carrie (in which she played the lead). She has also worked in Crossmaglen with the Shelagh Y outh Musical Society in Godspell and Shay H ealy’s The Knowledge.

O v er the last 4 years she has appeared with DAYMS in West Side Story, Zorba and The Hired M an. This is her second year with the R & R having played Chava in Fiddler on the R o o f \ast year. She is also one of the three recipients of the R & R's Robert McCullagh Bursary for vocal studies.

HEATHER HEWSON H eather is a leading artist with the R & R, well-known for her portrayals of such Gilbert and Sullivan roles as Katisha, Lady Jane, the Duchess of Plaza T o ro , and of a wide variety of Character parts in musicals, notably Bloody Mary in South Pacific, Mrs. Pearce in My Fair L ady, Mamita in the 1978 premiere of Gigi, Q ueenie in Show Boat, and Golde in Fiddler on the Roof.

She has been Chorus Master of the R & R for some years and has played a considerable part in the develop­ m ent of the Society’s choral activities.

An Honours graduate in Music and D ram a Stud­ ies of Trinity College, Dublin, her activities include accompanying, arranging music, conducting, and appearing from time to time in the Society’s con­ certs and cabaret entertainm ents - sometimes in highly unusual disguises!

ANNA JENNINGS A n n a , a g r a d u a t e in music from M a y no otii, p e r 足 f o rm ed h er first o p e r a at the age of 15, the m o t h e r in A m u h l a n d the N ight Visitors, she has p layed the leading roles in musicals such as A n n ie G et Y o u r G u n. Carousel, South Pacific a n d The M erry W idow.

Since com ing to D u blin in 1989. A n n a has played Q u e e n of the N ight an d First Lady in E xcerpts fr o m O peras in the J o h n Play er T h e a t r e with D G O S . She has sung with the R T E C h a m b e r C h o ir, given recitals both in Ireland a nd L o n d o n an d has p e r fo r m e d with the New Jersey S y m ph on y O r c h e str a at the A d a r e Festival. She has also a p p e a r e d as s o p r a n o soloist in p e r fo r m a n c e s of Carmina Buruiiu: a p r e m i e re o f Children o f the L o st M u 足 sic ( G e r a r d Victory) at the Royal Hospital K ilm ain h am an d she played Fiordiligi in Cosi fa n tutti ( Y o u n g Dub lin O p e r a ) . O t h e r w orks include M o z a rt's R eq u ie m an d Mass in C. Flandel's M essiah, Bach's Cantata 140 and many others.

RITA KEALY R ita was b o r n in D ub lin an d c o m m e n c e d h e r d a n c e career at the ver y early ag e o f 4 w h e n a p p ear in g o n the T h e a t r e R o ya l in R o b in s o n Crusoe with Noel Purcell.

R ita s u b s e q u e n tly b e c a m e a R o y a le tte a n d t r a i n e d u n d e r Alice D a lg a r n o . She has w o r k e d on m a n y films a nd televi足 sion.

PAUL KELLY Paul stu died with V ero n ica D u n n e at the College of Music, D u b lin . SANDRA KELLY Sandra Kelly who has just obtained her PhD. in Chemistry from U C D is playing with the R & R again after a lapse of several years when she played one of the Fairies in lolanthe.

Studying music under Mary Brennan in the College of Music she has recently played with Crumlin & Roscrea Operatic Societies and last year she played Laurie in the Gay Byrne radio version of Oklahoma produced by Kevin Hough.

In N ovem ber 1991 with the Society she played Tessa in 7'he Gondoliers.

PETER LEWIS Peter Lewis studied singing with Frank Cowle and won Feis Ceoil gold medals in 1973 and 1974. Since then he has sung many principal roles with the R & R , mainly in Gilbert & Sullivan, O f these, most notable would be Pish Tush in The M ikado on several occasions, the Bosun in H M S Pinafore on two occasions and he also took the part of A vran in Fiddler on the Roof.

He has taken part in previous N C H concerts with the R & R and was a leading soloist in the R & R ’s recent cassette Curtain Call.

CATHAL MacCABE Cathal MacCabe was born in Derry and educated there at St. Columb's College and in Q ueens University Belfast where he took degrees in chemistry, music and psychology.

He joined the music staff of RTE in 1969 and worked on a wide variety of programmes. He was appointed Controller of R adio 2 FM in 1985 and in 1988 became Head of Music where he has responsibility for the entire music output of R T E R adio including the National Symphony Orchestra and the R T E Concert Orchestra.

He first became interested in the theatre when he played piano for his father’s rehearsals and continued to work first as a music director and later as a producer. A m ong the Irish prem ieres he has w orked on were Irene, George M, A Little Night Music, Man o f La Mancha and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

ROBERT McKEVITT Robert McKevitt joined the R & R in 1978, but was al­ ready an experienced performer with many of the Dublin and Belfast musical societies from as long ago as 1949.

With the R & R Robert has been more prominent in the bass G & S roles, and has also appeared in many of the R & R ’s presentations at the NCH. His most recent appearances with the Society were as Baptista in Kiss Me, Kale at the Gaiety and Sergeant Meryll in The Yeomen o f the Guard in 1991.

JOHN MOONEY John developed his taste for the stage in school where he played in a variety of musicals and plays. He has since qualified as a Chartered Accountant but still retains his theatrical interests.

He has trained with the College of Music and is cur­ rently with Paul Deegan in the Royal Irish Academy of Music.

H e played Dick, the juvenile lead, in Rhymes produc­ tion of Sellout; Ozzie Babson in Irene; a straight acting part as the priest in Canaries and came back to the music scene again with DAYMS to play in West Side Story, Kiss M e Kate and Godspell.

He has also sung with the DGOS, AIMS Anniversary Concerts and in the national final of Tops o f the Town which was televised live by RTE, His roles with R&R include Barnaby in Hello Dolly.

Giuseppe in The Gondoliers, in 1991, He was a semi­ finalist in Star Search in Clontarf Castle. In May 1992 he will be singing 'Bring Him Home' from Les Miserables in the Gay Byrne Concert.

ANNE MARIA SMITH Anne Maria studied music with Bernadette Greevy in Dublin and Marlena Malasin New York. Having sung in Belgium, Spain, Italy and the US. is now permanently living in Dublin since her marriage. Her first production with the R&R was as Julie in Showboat, and has since appeared with the Society on several occasions. We wel­ come her return to Mad About Musicals.
