Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society The Gondoliers opened at the Savoy Theatre, London in December 1889 and with the earlier Mikado is acknowledged as the most popular of the Gilbert and Sullivan works. Opera and musical comedy in England through the eighteen hundreds had reached a low compared with the enormous success of similar works in Continental Europe. In London particularly,'a revival was overdue.

Gilbert and Sullivan, already successful, with Patience, H.M.S. Pinafore, lolanthe, Pirates o f Penzance, Yeomen of the Guard and especially Mikado had raised the standards, and so the appreciation of the public.

After Mikado and Yeomen, both authors had drifted apart and quarrelled; at one stage “the dialogue contained a long-range interchange of postal gunfire and increasing explosives”. Their business partner D’Oyly Carte, fearful of a complete breakdown did succeed in having them co-operate.

So effective was this that Sullivan recorded in his diary “they shook hands and buried the hatchet”.

Some of this shows in the situation where two humble gondoliers arrange “to reign jointly, so that no question can arise as to the validity of their acts”.

Gondoliers is a joyous opera, happy, kindly, exuberant with a sweet reconciliation after the bitter quarrel. So relax, let there be no possible doubt of your enjoyment and join us in being for tonight - one of our merriest fellows.

Vhe (gondoliers T h e ageless story of the two personable gondoliers and their refreshingly youthful and pretty wives remains one of the ‘top te n ’ in p o p u la rity in the G ilb ert a n d Sullivan repertoire.

It w as the eleventh in the series and was given its first p erform ance on D e c e m b e r ? , 1889.

It is re p o rte d that ‘this first night was the most brilliant of all their first nights, a n d th at at the close, the c om pany received an ovation that could be h e a r d outside, above the roar of the S trand ” .

T h e o th e r im p o rtan t q u a rte t of players in the opera are the D u k e and D u c h e s s of Plaza T o ro , a nd their darling daughter, Casilda, on w hom they h av e pinned their hop e s of financial survival. H ow ev er, her secret love L uiz, is b ut a d ru m m e r boy, and sc beneath her p a re n ts ’ notice.

T w o o f the loveliest duets Sullivan has written are sung by these two, a n d th e re are o th e r delightful quartets, especially the elegant G avo tte in th e se c o n d act, which also includes the w ell-l^ow n ‘T a k e A P air of S p a rk lin g E y e s ’ sung by M arco, te n o r p artn er o f the G ondoliers.

T h e p ro duction all those years ago was also responsible for an unusual a ck n o w le d g e m e n t of each o th e r ’s w ork, w hen at the e n d of the first p e rfo rm a n c e , G ilb e rt thank ed Sullivan and said ‘the o p era gives o n e the c h a n c e o f shining right through the tw entieth centur}' with a reflected light’.

EILEEN BARDIN Eileen B ardin studied voice w ith Deirdre Grier Delaney and m ore recently w ith Philip O ’Reilly. She is a m usic graduate from T rin ity College Dublin. She has been a m em ber o f a num ber o f choirs and m usical societies, including DGOS, Christ C hurch Cathedral Choir and Cantique (v/ith w hom she was a soloist) and has won prizes in the Feis Ceoil. In 1989 Eileen played the part of Belinda in Purcell’s D id o a nd Aeneas in W aterford and in 1993 she played the role of Valencienne in Lehar’s The M e rry W id ow w ith C lontarf Musical Society.

This is Eileen’s second appearance with the R & R and she is veiy excited to be playing the part o f Fiametta.

S IN ^ D MARIE BRENNAN Sinead has appeared in num erous productions to date.

She has had a keen interest in theatre from an early age.

The first show Sinead acted in was S h o w B o a t w ith D undrum Musical Society, playing the role o f Kim. She returned to D un drum in February 1994 to take the leading role o f M argot In Desert Song. Over the last few years Sinead has played roles in shows such as F idd le r on the Roof, S a lad Days, Godspell and Grease w ith the Xavier G oodwin School o f Drama. Sinead has also appeared w ith the W exford Light Opera Society where she played the role of M agnolia in S h o w Boat.

Sinead is currently studying singing with Evelyn Dowling, and she has ju s t graduated from Bull Alley Theatre C om pany where she studies m ost areas of perform ing. Her c o l­ lege roles included M atirio in The House o f Bernarda Alba, Mary T ilford in The C hildren's Hour, Boy and Observer in Pacific Ouertures, Astrid in Larry Grossm an's m usical p la y /\ D o ll’s L ife and Ju ne and Opera Singer in Anyone Can Whistle. Sinead has ju s t finished perform ing on the Olym pia stage in The K in g and I and is currently in rehearsal for Frederica w ith Corpus Christi Musical Society where she will play the title role. She is delighted to be w orking once again w ith the R & R.

PATRICK CONNOLLY Patrick is a member of ‘Anuna’ w itii whom he performs both as a choral member and as a soloist, he has per­ formed in Riuerdance the Show, The Royal Variety Performance as well as having several television and radio performances to his credit. Recently he has returned from highly successful concert tours of France and Sweden. He has recorded extensively with this group and is featured on their latest album Omnis.

As a soloist in his own right, Patrick has frequently sung in public with solo performances in the National Concert Hall, the House of Lords, Number 29, and as far afield as Moscow where he performed the baritone solos in Carmina Burana and Faure’s Requiem with the College of Music. Last October, he organised and produced a high­ ly successful concert in aid of O ur Lady’s Hospice netting in excess of £4,750. This event also resulted in his appearance on Liue at Three.

A student of Deirdre-Grier Delaney and Trudy Carberry, he has enjoyed several suc­ cesses in competitions winning the Baritone Solo, French Song and interpretation cups at the Feis Ceoil, the Baritone and overall Male Voice Award at Ballymena Feis and last year the Thom as Moore Singer o f the Year’.

Musical experience to date includes playing Antonio in the 1991 R & R production of The Gondoliers and Carousel in the Tivoli in 1991. Giuseppe is his first principal role which has proven to be most challenging and a valuable learning experience.

CATHY CORCORAN Cathy’s first leading role was that of Polly Brown in The Boyfriend with Bray Musical Society. Since then she has gone on to play many roles including Laurie in Oklahoma, the Narrator in Joseph, Hope in Anything Goes, Connie Wory in the Irish premiere of A Chorus Line, Maria in West Side Story, for which she was awarded Best Female Performer in the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera 1995, and her most recent performance was in The King a n d I at the Olympia.

She has been studying singing at the Royal Irish Academy of M usic as a pupil of Prof. Paul Deegan and has been a soloist at several concerts including the Eastern Region AIMS concert in the Mansion House 1995.

Cathy is really enjoying her first show with the R & R.

JACKIE CGRRAN-OLOHAN D aughter of Josephine Scanlon and Chris Curran, Jackie has distinguished herself as a perform er, m usician, m usic director and chorus master. Her m usical education thrived under Sr. Agnes Cecilia at St. Mary’s College, Arklow, the College o f Music and OCD. She has been Music D irector w ith DAYMS in m any show premieres including Zorba, The H ire d M an, M ost H ap py Fella, A n y th in g Goes, Into the Woods, La Cage aux Folles and A Chorus Line. She has been awarded Best Music D irector at the 1992 W aterford International Festival o f L ig ht Opera for her w ork on Sondheim 's In to the Woods and this, w ith conducting her father in last year’s p roduction o f Annie at the O lym pia she regards as her highlights to date. Jackie has m ade m any solo appearances in the NCH and works regularly on tele­ vision and radio. Her appearances include Kenny Live, Eurosong, Liue a t Three and RTE FM 3’s C oncert Choice. M ost recently she was Music D irector for the O lym pia’s p ro ­ d u ctio n o f The K in g a n d I. She teaches m usic at O ur Lady’s School in Rathnew.

BERYL DIXON in M arch 1990, Beryl D ixon directed the R & R’s highly suc­ cessful G ilbert & S u lliv a n Extravaganza at the N ational C oncert Hall. This was after an interval of som e years since she had directed several successive seasons o f G ilbert & Sullivan operas at the Gaiety Theatre and she com es to the R & R again to direct The Gondoliers this tim e in the N ational C oncert Hall.

Her absence from the D ublin theatre scene was due to her professional co m m itm e n t to teaching, lecturing, running her own speech and dram a school, and directing stage productions, w hich had to be w ithin easy distance o f her hom e in C ounty D urham in the N orth East o f England.

She is excited and delighted to be returning to her beloved D ublin and the R R. Indeed, she is reverting fully to producing - w ith perhaps some intervals o f festival adju­ d icating work.

A fo rm e r principal Soubrette w ith the D’Oyly Carte Opera Com pany, Beryl directed G & S a lm ost exclusively, b ut for som e years now has moved into m usicals and operetta but still m aintaining interest in G & S. Retired Soubrettes never disclose their age - and Beryl is no exception. Even her hus­ band (who is considerably older than her) does not know it! After all, th a t great Irishm an O scar W ilde said “ Never trust a w om an who will tell you her age. A w om an w ho will do th a t will do anything!"

JIMMY DIXON Jim m y began iiis stage appearances with Wexford Light Opera, playing a variety of parts. Following this he spent a year touring the CJSA with the international musical group “Up W ith People” . Over the past ten years he has taken leading roles with many societies. Appearances with the R & R include Motel in Fiddler on the Roof, Cornelius in H e llo D o lly and he com pered last year’s One Enchanted Evening. Having dipped his toe in G & S waters playing the Major General in The Pirates o f Penzance tonight he once again strays into Pat Campbell territory with his interpretation of the Duke o f Plaza Toro.

GAVIN DORRIAN Although his roots are Donegal, Gavin Dorrian was born in Glasgow. He studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, and later in London, before joining the Scottish Ballet where he remained for four years.

As a dancer he has toured internationally and danced soloist roles with the Scottish Ballet, the Iranian National Ballet, the Ballet of II Teatro Alla Scala, Milan, BalletTheatre Russillo of the Centre National Choreographique de Toulouse, France, Vienna Ballet Theatre and London City Ballet.

Based in Dublin, he is the Artistic Director of the College of Dance where he teaches both Classical Ballet and Contemporary Dance. He has also been Resident Choreographer for the past four seasons to Wexford Festival Opera.

Other choreographic credits include the live-action sequences for the feature-length film cartoon Thumbelina; Euripide’s The Bachae for the 1991 Cardiff Arts Festival; Die Fledermaus and La Trauiata, for DGOS Opera Ireland. Film work includes W. B. Yeats’ The Cat on the Moon, directed by Patrick Bergin. He m ost recently staged the dance for the Gate Theatre production of Pride and Predjudice.

s io b h An f a w s it t Siobhan is from Wexford and moved to Greystones where she became involved with the Greystones Operatic & Dramatic Society. She has played a lot of leading roles with them including Katisha in The M ikado and Eliza in M y Fair Lady.

She has worked m ost recently with Kevin Hough’s Theatre Nights concerts, both on The Late Late Show and in the Rose o f Tralee Festival. She has appeared as soloist in the m ost recent AIMS concerts.

Siobhan has also worked with Kilmacud and DAYMS. She played the part of Ruth in The Pirates o f Penzance last year.

PAULA FAY Paula Fay started singing at the tender age of 7 and has w on num erous feisanna and other com petitions th ro u g h ­ o ut the country. She began to act with Xavier Goodwin D ram a S chool at age 11. Her first leading role was N ancy in O liv e r follow ed by Prudence in the Q uaker G irl and S om bra in The Arcadians. She was bitten by the bug and appeared w ith various m usical socities and was a m em ber o f J u r y ’s Cabaret and B utlins’ Mosney. Her previous m u si­ cals include S a la d D ays; B e lle o f N e w York; Guys a nd D o lls ; S h o w b o a t; H o w to Succeed in Business W ithout R e a lly T ryin g and m ost recently the leading role, Millie, in Seven Brides fo r Seven Brothers w ith D undalk Musical Society. She is also a m em ber o f Coolm ine M usical Society where she has played leading roles in F in ia n ’s R a in b o w and S h o w Boat.

Gearoid studied m usic with the late Dr. J. O ’Reilly in the College o f M usic and graduated with a B.Mus. fro m (JCD. Subsequently, he studied conducting with, am ong others, George Hurst in London. Since then he has w orked as conductor, m usic d irector and arranger for m o st Irish theatrical com panies in w orks ranging from Mozart to Sondheim .

At present, he is resident co nductor with the R & R. Gearoid has appeared as guest conductor w ith the Irish C ham ber Orchestra, O ur Lady's Choral Society, the National S ym phony Orchestra and the RTE C oncert Orchestra.

PATRICIA HOUGH Patricia has played a variety o f leading roles in over 25 shows w ith several m usical societies. These have been as diverse as Ado Annie in O kla ho m a , Polly in The Boyfriend, Tzeitel in F id d le r on the Roof, and Phyllis in lolanthe.

She received the Best Female Perform ance Award fo r her portrayal o f the title role in Love fro m J u ly at the W aterford International Festival o f L ig ht Opera. In the same year she was awarded Best Fem ale Principal by the Association of Irish M usical Societies. W ith St. Louis Musical Society she was leading lady in th eir three award-winning productions: The G olden Years, The B o yfrien d and Love fro m Ju ly.

She has also played female lead in Anne o f Green Gables and in The K in g a n d /.

MARY KELLY Mary studies singing w itii Prof. Paul Deegan o f the RIAM. She has been an active m em ber o f the society since first jo in in g in 1991.

This is M ary’s first part and she is looking forward to play­ ing Vittoria in this season’s Gondoliers.

ANTHONY KIRWAN A nthony started his stage training at the Billie Barry Stage School at the age o f nine. Since then he has trained with the College o f Dance and is currently training at the Royal Irish Academ y o f Music under Prof. Paul Deegan.

His theatre credits include Annie at the O lym pia Theatre, F id d le r on the R o o f and pantom ines R obinson Crusoe and The S n o w Queen at the Gaiety Theatre.

Television credits include num erous appearances on S u n d a y M ig ht a t the Gaiety and S u nd ay N ig h t a t the O ly m p ia , Proms ‘94, The Late Late S how , Prologue o f JoM a x i and Secrets.

He has ju s t finished the M aureen Potter S h o w in C lontarf Castle. He has perform ed in J u rys Irish Cabaret which after their Sum m er Season run last year also to ok on board a ten-w eek coast to coast T our o f the United States and parts o f Canada.

PETER LEWIS Peter studied voice w ith the late Frank Cowle and won m ajor co m p etitio ns in the Feis Ceoil. He has sung m any G ilbert & Sullivan roles including Pish-Tush and Pooh-Bah in The M ik a d o , and Leonard M errill and Bosun in Yeomen and Pinafore respectively. He has appeared as a soloist in the G ay B yrn e Gala Concerts and recent AIMS concerts at the NCH and Mansion House.

Peter is an established m em ber of the R & R and has played m any leading roles w ith the society at the NCH and Gaiety Theatre. He is a soloist on the recent R & R record­ ing C urtain Call. He returns this tim e as M arco and enjoys this new challenging role.

BRENDAN MacQOAILE Dublin-born B rendan h a s studied singing with Dr. Veronica D unn e a t th e Leinster School of Music. He has appeared on television and radio an d has followed his grandfather’s lead on to th e Dublin stage, m ost recently in Aladdin with the Baldoyle Musical Society.

MAURICE O ’SULLIVAN Maurice has perform ed in R & R pro ductions since 1948.

He h a s played in nearly all of the G & S operas, usually in the ‘heavy’ roles. He has also appeared in musical c o m e ­ dies su c h as Col. Pickering in My Fair Lady, Merlin in C a m e lo t and Lazar Wolf in Fiddler on the Roof.

He h as pro d u ced m usicals for m any co m p an ies and lec­ tured on Gilbert & Sullivan.

He w as active for m any years on R & R com m ittees.

# Sponsoring the Rehab bottle banks w hich proved to be an enorm ous success providing over 50 sites nationw ide and collecting 3,233 tonnes o f glass in 1994.
