A Century of Song As the R&R approaches its 100* Birthday we are deUghted to bring you news of an exciting programme of events to mark this wonderful occasion in this, our Century of Song!

In addition to our twice-yearly productions we will be staging smaller, intimate performances and producing a commemorative book on the Society’s rich history setting it out as a marker for Dublin’s cultural landscape.

We are particularly interested in gathering any information on productions from early in our history such as old programmes, photos and newspaper cuttings. Please get in touch if you have any and we assure you all originals will be taken care of and returned.

Welcome to the National Concert Hall and to a concert version of that great show, Guys 8 Dolls.

But this is a concert w ith a difference. This production includes not only the famous R&R Chorus, but also the dialogue and stage movements of the principal actors, all costumed in 1950's style, as when the show opened on Broadway.

This type of presentation is new to the R&R and incieed it could be said to be most suitable for the ambience of a concert hall.

So the guys and dolls of the Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society are ready to entertain you and are delighted to be joined on stage by guys and dolls of the RTE Concert Orchestra.

Next year - 2013 - we, in the R&R, w ill be celebrating our 100th Birthday!

But more of that later!

GJY6 ^ DOLL^> 6lhOW 6YPD1P6I6 N ew York, the city th at never sleeps. And w ith in it, all human life. From the news seller to the chorus girl, from the gam bler to the missionary - all of th em caught up in the te em ing v ita lity of the city streets.

Sergeant Sarah Brown, of the Save a Soul Mission, spends her days vainly trying to spread 'The Word', and make a difference to the sin and depravity of the streets, full of tipsters, gamblers and con men. Miss Adelaide, the showgirl, is desperate to leave behind her seem ingly glamorous lifestyle for a w h ite picket fence and roses round the door w h ile her term inal fiance Nathan Detroit whiles away the hours trying to find yet another n ew location for his floating dice gam e w hile keeping just one short step ahead of the law. The gamblers, eager for just one more roll, for that w in n in g streak which w ill keep th em ahead of the gam e are led by the coolest, highest roller of th em all. Sky Masterson, w h o w ould bet on anything that w ou ld turn him a profit. These are some of the characters of Damon Runyon's story.

Act I Nathan Detroit is desperate to find a location for his floating crap game: he can use the Biltmore Garage, but only if he can come up w ith a thousand dollars - fast.

He has to find a bet that he can w in against Sky Masterson, and succeeds in w agering that Sky cannot persuade Sergeant Sarah Brown to fly w ith him to Havana. Sky realises th at he has been conned but w o n 't give up w ith o u t trying. He uses every ounce of his slick charm to convince Sarah that he is reformed sinner and that he w ill deliver a dozen sinners to her Mission if she w ill have dinner w ith him at his favourite restaurant. Reluctantly she agrees, w ith o u t realising that the restaurant is in Cuba...

Adelaide hasn't lost all hope that Nathan has given up his shady lifestyle, and th at their fourteen-year-long engagem ent w ill soon end in w edding bells. However, Nathan shows no signs of any change in his m ode of e m ploym ent, and during Sky and Sarah's absence in Havana, organises his gam e in the Save a Soul Mission itself. To convince the local policeman that the gathering of gamblers is entirely legitim ate, Nathan is forced to announce that he and Adelaide are eloping that

evening. In Cuba, Sky sees Sarah in a com pletely d ifferen t light, and despite the undoubted opportunity, the better side of his nature prevails. As they return from Havana, the crap game is raided, and Sarah runs from Sky, believing herself to have been used in order to get her a w a y from th e Mission.

Act I! Nathan cannot elope and host the crap gam e at the same tim e, so he lets Adelaide run once more. Sarah's uncle Arvide realises th at she has fallen in love w ith Sky, but refuses to have anything to do w ith him. Arvide insists that Sky fulfil his promise to deliver tw e lv e sinners to the Mission. At the crap game, Nathan offers to pay up on his bet about Sarah and Havana, but Sky denies that he took her there. Sky rolls the dice to w in the souls of the crapshooters, and insists that they keep their promise to attend the prayer m eeting.

Adelaide forgives Nathan on condition th a t they elope, but Nathan has the most unbelievable excuse of all - a prior engagem ent at the prayer m eeting. At the m eeting the gamblers reluctantly confess to their previous sins, and Sarah's mission is saved from closure. Cue w ed din g bells as Nathan and Adelaide m arry at the Mission now run by none other than Sergeant Sarah and Brother Sky Masterson!

Gearoid Grant graduated from UCD in 1972 and since tfien has combined a freelance career as conductor w ith a career in music education. He has recently retired from teaching in the FCJ School in Bunclody w here over the years he established a "school of music" w ith over 250 students playing in 2 very large ensembles. Gearoid started conducting in RTE over 30 years ago and has perform ed w ith RTECO and RTENSO on TV, in Concert Halls, and even in the rain w ith a 6000 strong choir in Lansdowne Road.

In 1990 Gearoid devised and continues to present and conduct each year the acclaimed The Irish Times/RTE series M u s k in the Classroom which introduces music to 30,000 Irish children annually, w ith 24 performances at the National Concert Hall in Dublin and in major venues around Ireland.

The program m e is developed in conjunction w ith RTE, The Irish Times and the Department of Education.

Gearoid has conducted the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland since its inception and has never missed a concert in nearly 30 years. The Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society has had similar service. For the last 10 years he has conducted the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland (including a sell-out concert in Carnegie Hall) and he organises and conducts the Hallelujah Christmas Concert at the Point Theatre w ith over 9000 children singing.

When he has the tim e Gearoid conducts orchestras in Europe, America and Africa in Halls from Cape tow n to Boston in a w ide repertoire ranging from Mozart to Sondheim. He has too intention of stopping just yet!

Noel graduated in 1997 from the Samuel Beckett School, Trinity College w ith a B.A. (Mod) Honours Degree and subsequently an M.A in Drama and Theatre Studies in 2003.

Noel's credits include The M erry W idow and Die Fledermaus in the National Concert Hall w ith Glasnevin Musical Society. He has been very successful at the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera w inning the Best Professional Director Award seven tim es w ith Mack 8 Mabel, Chicago, Cabaret, Barnum, Chess and the Irish prem iere of fW fa fo r Arthur's Team.

He also directed the Irish premieres of, A Slice o f Saturday Night, Seussical the Musical, and the w orld premieres of Rebecca Storm's H ollyw ood Ladies and Brian O'Reilly's Buskin at theTivoli Theatre. Noel directed the acclaimed N e w Pirates o f Penzance in 2002 and Je kyll d Hyde in 2006 for Wexford Light Opera. Both productions received the coveted AIMS Best Show in Ireland award. Noel recently directed the acclaimed world prem iere of The Lords o f Love, a n e w musical by Eoin Colfer in the Wexford Opera House and the Centenary The M ikado for Wexford Light Opera in 2011 Television credits include: Devised and directed D ifferent Dreams k a W in q Boyzone for RTE, devised and directed six aw ard-w inning productions for John Player Tops, The Last N ig h t o f the Proms & Viennese N ight for the Bank of Ireland Proms.

In June 2004 Noel was invited to direct The Importance o f Being Earnest a{ the Oscar Wilde 150th Celebrations in

Portora, Enniskillen. Recent credits also include Tim Rice's Chess', Cole Porter's Anything Goes at The National Concert Hall, The Merry Widow and Mel Brooks' The Producers also at The Gaiety Theatre in 2009. In 2011 Noel directed Some Enchanted Evening by Rodgers & Hammerstein for the R&R in conjunction with the RTE Concert Orctiestra. Noel would like to thank the R&R, the Casting Committee, the Production Team and a fantastic Cast for bringing this Guys and Dolls production to fruition.

Credits in Theatre in Education: In 2001 he devised and directed Learning Through The Arts In 'Breaking The Cycle' Schools for the Department of Education it featured a cast of 2,000. In 2004 he devised with Joe O'Donnell the award-winning melodrama. The Hands o f Doom for the Food Safety Promotion Board. He devised and directed St. Michael's House SO*" Anniversary production let's Celebrate in The Helix involving a cast of 400 students with intellectual disability in 2005. In 2006 he produced and directed Honk! in The Helix w ith a cast of 350 children from 15 prim ary schools, for the Dublin Docklands Developm ent A uthority which w on the 2006 Allianz Award for Culture in the Community.

IHIADIM lEAlLY, CtioiorocDAmD Marina has enjoyed great success as a dancer and choreographer performing throughout Ireland on television and in all major venues.

Her work, ranging fronn musical to opera has earned her many accolades w ith career highlights to date including winning both the AIMS and Bangor Festival's Best Choreographer Award for Me a n d M y Girl, going on to co-choreograph the professional production of the same show at the Olympia Theatre and also choreographing the Dublin premiere of the iconic show The Producers for the R&R in 2009.

Marina's association w ith the Society began initially as a dancer and progressed to choreographing musicals and concerts at the National Concert Hall and Gaiety Theatre too numerous to m ention. She has choreographed many of the Society's Gilbert & Sullivan productions over the years including the critically acclaimed The Mikado and last year's The Pirates o f Penzance to name but a few.

She is delighted to continue her association w ith the R&R as Choreographer for this season and w ould like to thank the entire cast for their very hard w o rk and dedication over the last num ber of months.

JACI^IIIE GJIDDAI OlLOlhAlfl, Cttoau DwrcroD ackie has a distinguished career as a performer, musician, director, chorus director and teacher. Her musical education thrived under Sr. Agnes Nolan at St. Mary's College, Arklow, Eithne Troy at the College of Music and subsequently UCD from which she graduated w ith a B Mus. (Hons.). By day she can be found teaching music at St. Gerard's School, Bray, Co. Wicklow.

She has been Music Director and Conductor for many show premieres including Anything Goes in 1991 w ith DAYMS directed by Brian Merrim an and was awarded Best Music Director at the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera for Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods. This, and conducting her late father, Chris, in Annie at the Olympia, she regards as her highlights to date.

Jackie is currently appearing w ith Wexford Light Opera Society in their production of Follies and w ould like to thank the R&R for affording her the opportunity to do so. Future engagem ents include perform ing w ith Jim Doherty and Honor Heffernan in Jim M olloy's 80"' Birthday Celebrations here at The National Concert Hall.

Nora joined the R&R as ASM to Stage Manager Seamus O'Neill. She has worked in all the backstage departm ents including Props, Lighting, Sound, Stage M anagem ent and Production Managem ent for the R&R in both the Gaiety Theatre and The National Concert Hall.

Nora has acted as Stage Manager and Lighting Designer/Operator for m a ny societies and groups, notably, St. Louis, Loreto, Take Four and John Player TOPS (Aer Lingus). She has stage managed and lit many aw ard winning shows in Waterford and Bangor. She is a recipient of an AIMS award for Best Stage Manager and has conducted workshops on Stage M anagem ent for AIMS.

M ary has been involved w ith numerous musical societies since 1977 both on and off stage. In 1987 she jo ined the Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society perform ing in several shows and working behind the scenes on costumes. She received AIMS and Tops of the Town awards for Best Costumes. Mary wishes the Directors, Cast and Crew good luck and every success w ith Guys 5 Dolls.

EDWADD O'GIDADY WAL6HE, Wapddcdi: A trained architect, Edward has perform ed as singer and dancer w ith the R&R in Fiddler on the Roof, The Gondoliers, Anything Goes, The Produc&s and numerous concerts. He was honoured to take over the role of Wardrobe Master from illustrious predecessors in 2009. He has performed w ith Katherine Lynch (live shows), Dublin Burlesgue Tassel Club, G2 and Is a founding Board m em ber of ABSOLUT Gay Theatre Festival Dublin (Chair of Artistic Panel). Having overseen costumes, hair and m ake-up for SMCO's Footloose, th e y have appointed him Production Designer for their 2012 production of Hair Awards include Set and Costumes for Slaughterhouse Swan (Focus Theatre). Radio and Television: Lucy is an established voice-over artiste and does both commercial and corporate work for radio and television. She also voices the characters of Sam and Jessica (am ong others) in the RTE/Monster animations cartoon series Ballybraddan. This year, Lucy was a m em be r of 'Team Kian' on the hit RTE talent show. The Voice o f Ireland.

Lucy will be playing the role of Kate McGowan in Maury Yeston's Titanic at the Civic Theatre, Dublin in May this year.

Originally from Arklow, Jimmy began his stage appearances with Wexford Light Opera. Over thirty-five years on the stage have provided him with a variety of roles and opportunities to appear in Drama, Variety and Musicals as well as presenting. He has worked with m any musical societies in Dublin and elsewhere. As a m em ber of the R&R for the past tw enty-five years, he has played several roles in the Gilbert & Sullivan repetoire, including Sir Joseph Porter in HMS Pinafore. In addition, he has presented and taken part in m any concerts for the R&R and enjoyed three Christmas seasons at the National Concert Hall as the Tin Man with Festival Productions presentation of The Wizard o f Oz. More recently he recreated the role of Tin Man in The Wizard o fO z ' m the Wexford Opera House for Christmas 2010, followed by his Lyric Opera debut as Njegus in The M erry Widow here at the National Concert Hall. He presented the H ear Our Songs Concen for the R&R in March, and played the role of the Major General in their successful presentation of The Pirates o f Penzance last Autumn.

Jimmy will return to the National Concert Hall to play Uncle Max with Festival Productions presentation of The Sound o f Music next Christmas.

ADTriJD mcGAJDAr, t c Jm Arthur started on the stage 40 years ago with Good Counsel Musical Society, Drim nagh and has since th en been involved in over 80 musicals. In th at tim e he has been nom in ated for four AIMS awards culminating in th e Best Supporting M a le aw ard for his portrayal of Jud Fry in Okldhoma!. He was also n om in ate d three tim es as Best Director.

He has played m an y different roles in musical societies around Ireland such as Jupiter in Orpheus in the Underworld, The King in The King and I, the title role in The Mikado and his favourite of all, Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, a role which he has played m an y times. He has com peted in seven International Festivals of Light Opera in W aterford and has been the recipient of the Gold M edal for Bass Solo in the Feis Maitiu.

In th e last tw e n ty years he has been directing shows all around Dublin. He was nom in ated for Best Director w ith Keable Young Generation in th e W aterford International Festival of Light Opera for his production of The King and I. He has appeared at The National Concert Hall, The Olym pia Theatre and The Gaiety Theatre on num erous occasions. Most recently he has appeared in Jim M olloy Productions' 42nd Street at The Gaiety Theatre. He has just finished directing a highly successful run of Guys and Dolls'iot Naas Musical Society in March of this year and has also just com pleted th e short film Suitcases which w as shot in Co. Clare and is d ue for release to film festivals in 20 1 2 .

CIADAIH OLOIhAin., UdDpy m tiODj[ As a past pupil of Blackrock College, Ciaran had his first stage experience at th e age of 13 portraying the role of Captain Corcoran in HMS Pinafore under the late Fr. Jarlath Dowling. W hile in school, he p layed the role of Naphtali in Joseph and the A m azing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and p erfo rm ed in tw o original productions, Ochdn and Brothers in Arms, both w ritten by Toirleac O'Brien.

As a student of Phillip O'Reilly, Ciaran received vocal coaching at the Royal Irish A ca d e m y of Music for six years. During th at tim e he also received a Diplom a in Perform ance. In 2 0 1 0 Ciaran co m pleted his Bachelor of Arts d egre e in History and Greek and Roman Civilisation at University College Dublin.

Ciaran perform s on a regular basis w ith the chorus of Lyric Opera in productions such as Lucia di Lam merm oor, Don Giovanni and II Trovatore. Closer to h o m e in his native W icklow, he has p erfo rm ed with MYTh Productions, playing roles in such titles as Billy Elliot, Ragtim e and Evita to n a m e but a fe w and perform s on a regular basis w ith his band. The Bandits. Last year Ciaran returned to Blackrock College as Assistant Musical Director in their original production. Going Forward, w ritten and directed by Brian Savage. With th e R&R Ciaran has p layed the title role in The M ikado and Sam uel inThe Pirates o f Penzance both under th e direction of Garry M o u nta in e. He also ap peared as a soloist in th e concert Flear Our Songs.

As a proud grandson to th e late Josephine Scanlon and Chris Curran, and son to Sean and Jackie Olohan, Ciaran is no stranger to th e world of th eatre and music. He would like to wish th e cast and crew of Guys an d Dolls the very best luck.

Marion started her singing career with the Young Dublin Singers and sang on a number of their many recordings. She studied singing with the late Sr. Mary Finan and with Matt Smolenski at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. Marion has co-directed many musicals for children.

She joined the R&R as an active chorus member in 1983.

Theatre credits include: Mrs Rose in Hello Dolly, Mrs Brown in Showboat, Grandma Tzeitel in Fiddler on the Roof, Mrs StainslyAshertonin Me and M y Girl and Mrs Eynsford Hill' in M y Fair Lady, all for the R&R at the Gaiety Theatre.

The RTE Concert Orchestra has had a special place in Irish musical life for over 60 years, with a range that sees them equally at hom e in classical, opera, jazz, film, rock and traditional music.

The orchestra has perform ed Nessun Dorm a with Pavarotti and Messiah for the Pope, played w ith jazz legends like Lalo Schifrin and Cleo Laine and rock musicians like Jon Lord of Deep Purple, and collaborated w ith top Irish acts including Altan, Sharon Shannon, Duke Special, Declan O'Rourke and The Coronas.

Heard across the world in seven Eurovision Song Contests, the RTE CO gave the electrifying first performance of Riverdance and w e n t on to record the phenom enally successful CD. Other commercial recordings include Declan O'Rourke's Big Bad Beautiful World, Duke Special's I N ever Thought This Day Would Come and a recording of Balfe's opera Falstaff that was acclaimed as 'a triumph for singers, conductor, orchestra and chorus alike' {The Irish Times). Film credits for the RTE CO include A lbert Nobbs by Brian Byrne, which earned a 2012 Golden Globe nomination for Best Song and w on the 2012 IFTA for Original Score, as w ell as Byrne's The Island, Irish Destiny Micheal 6 Suilleabhain and The League of Gentlem en's Apocalypse by Joby Talbot.

The RTE CO has twice been the 'house orchestra' for The Late Late Show, showing its range in performances with a guests ranging from Billy Ocean to the River Tenors (aka Apres Match) to Bell X I. The RTE CO also recorded Brian Byrne's arrangem ent of the old th e m e w hen Ryan Tubridy took over as presenter. In its 2 0 1 0 appearance at Electric Picnic, the orchestra's set was hailed as one of the highlights of the weekend.

Recent years have seen the developm ent of a popular series of film screenings w ith live performance of the orchestral score. Highlights of these screenings to date have included The Wizard ofO z, Casablanca, Psycho, Bugs Bunny on Broadway and the massively successful The Lord o f the Rings.

The RTE CO's education program me is presented nationwide to tens of thousands of young people as the RTE/The Irish Times Music in the Classroom series, which has been running for 23 years.

The RTE CO's M ay/June season at the National Concert Hall includes the world prem iere of Bill Whelan's Symphonic Suite from Riverdance (^7 May), concerts with Declan O'Rourke (8 June) and Hayley Westenra (14 June) and a recreation of The Rat Pack: Live a t the Sands H o tel (16 June).
