It is my privilege, on behalf o f Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society, to welcome you to the National Concert Hall and to the Society's production o f Cole Porter's "Anything Goes" To stand the test o f tim e is one o f the criteria th a t defines a p rod u ct o f high quality. To have lasted 94 years in the precarious w orld o f show business and to be as popular as always, surely speaks volumes fo r the prod u ct affectionately known as the 'R&R'.

This remarkable achievem ent has been due in no small way to the enormous d e d ica tio n and sheer hard w o rk by unseen and unheralded m embers o f the Society's Executive C o m m itte e , sub足 com m ittees, various backup groups and many individuals, all g ivin g o f th e ir valuable services on an honorary basis.

Several m em bers o f th e present co m m itte e have given long and faithful service and fo r th a t they deserve much thanks as do all com m ittee members, fo rm e r and contemporary.

2007 Autumn Production - ANYTHING GOES

BACKGROUND ON "ANYTHING GOES" Anything Goes is a musical with music and lyrics by Cole Porter. The 'b ook' was a collaborative e ffo rt by Guy Bolton, P. G. Wodehouse, Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. It introduced such songs as "You're the Top", "I G et a Kick O ut of You" and "Anything Goes".

Anything Goes was based on an idea by a producer, Vinton Freedley, who was living on a b o a t in Panama, having left the USA to avoid his debts. He selected the w ritin g team, and the star, Ethel Merman. As the show was in preparation, a passenger ship, th e SS M orro Castle, burned and over 125 passengers perished. The plot, which concerned a shipwreck, was deem ed insensitive, and the show was alm ost entirely rewritten.

According to theatre legend, the show's new title, along w ith the title number, was born from the haste with which show was revamped; at a late night production meeting, an exasperated and over-worked mem ber o f th e production team cried out "A nd just how in the hell are we going to end the first act?!" " A t this p o in t," responded one o f the producers, being more helpful than he realized, "anything goes!!"

The resulting story concerned the shenanigans below decks on a cruise ship bound fo r London from New York. On board: an evangelizing nightclub singer, Reno Sweeney (played by Merman); a love-sick stowaway, Billy Crocker (played by William Gaxton); and a second-rate gangster on the lam, M oonface Martin (played by Victor Moore). The show opened at the Alvin Theatre, New York City, on 21 Novem ber 1934 and became the fo u rth longest-running musical of th e 1930s.

In 1962, the script was revised to incorporate several o f the changes from the movie versions. Most changes revolved around the previously m inor character Erma, whose name was changed to Bonnie. This revision was also the first stage version o f A nything Goes to incorporate "It's De-Lovely".

For th e 1987 Broadway Revival, which starred Patti Lupone in the role o f Reno Sweeney, John W eidm an and Tim othy Crouse (Russel's son) updated th e book and re-ordered the musical numbers, borrow ing Cole Porter pieces from oth e r Porter shows, a practice which the composer o ften engaged in.

The musical enjoyed a W est End revival in 2003 w ith the National Theatre's production starring Sally Ann T riplett and John Barrowman.

SYNOPSIS Billy Crocker, a young Wall Street broker, stows away on th e S.S. American, in hopes o f w inning the heart o f his beloved Hope Harcourt. His boss, Yale graduate Elisha J. Whitney, is also on board. He plans to relax before the tremendous sale o f his own company's stock (or, in th e 1962 version, to make an im portant business deal in England). Hope is on her way to England to be married to Sir Evelyn Oakleigh, a stuffy, hapless British nobleman. Stowing away with Billy are 'M oonface' Martin, a gangster labeled 'Public Enemy 13', and his friend Erma (originally named Bonnie); th e tw o have disguised themselves as a reverend and a missionary, respectively, after stranding the ship's real reverend back at the port. On board, Crocker runs in to his friend, nightclub singer Reno Sweeney, who resolves to help Billy win over Hope. Billy simultaneously learns the true identities o f M oonface and Erma, and in exchange fo r his silence, they join the p lo t to break up Hope and Evelyn; as the show progresses, Hope, Evelyn, Billy, Reno, Elisha, Erma, and M oonface all end up in a variety o f comprom ising positions w ith members o f the opposite sex.

Extracts from 'Anything Goes' in popular culture • The song 'Anything G oes' achieved a m inor revival when it was used in the famous M o n ty Python's Flying Circus 'C ourtroom sketch'. The Pythons also introduced a completely different song called 'Anything Goes' by "th e other Cole P orter". ("A nything goes in, anything goes out, fish, bananas, old pyjamas, mutton, beef and tro u t...")

• One o f the m ost widely-seen versions o f the song 'Anything Goes' is the opening scene o f Indiana Jones and the Temple o f Doom, w here W illie Scott (Kate Capshaw) sings the title song in Mandarin at a Shanghai club Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is visiting. The first part o f the Mandarin lyrics is: Yi w ang si-i wa ye kan dao Xin li bian yao la jin g bao jin tian zhi Dao A nything goes.

• In th e play Dancing a t Lughnasa by Brian Friel, th e song 'Anything Goes' plays on th e radio in A ct 2 and is then sung by Gerry Evans while dancing a b o u t in the back yard and lane. "In old times a glimpse o f stocking, was looked on as something shocking... Now, A nything goes..." The song summarises the w hole play - o f tim es changing and the new world having an influence.

• In th e 1974 movie Blazing Saddles, 'I G e t a Kick O u t o f You' is perform ed comedically by Cleavon Little and the other actors portraying black railroad workers, com plete with a full harmony arrangement.

BACKGROUND ON "ANYTHING GOES" In the Family Guy episode Saving Private Brian, the Sergeant trainer claims 'Anything Goes' to be one o f his most favourite shows. Also, in the episode Brian: Portrait o f a Dog, Lois sings the first lines o f the song 'Anything Goes'.

Lucy and Ethel sing 'Friendship' in an episode o f I Love Lucy.

Felix and Oscar from The O d d Couple sang 'Friendship' on their 1973 record called The O d d Couple Sings.

The song 'Anything Goes' is used prom inently in the 1972 film Sleuth, w ith main character A ndrew Wyke (Laurence Olivier), complaining th a t they "d o n 't write songs like that anymore".

In an episode of Summer Heights High Mr. G cancels a production o f Anything Goes one week before opening.

Betsy Randle sung 'Anything Goes' on a Boy Meets World episode. As Time Goes By. In the Torchwood DVD extras, John Barrowman reprises the song "A nything G oes" live on the set o f Episode 12: Captain Jack Harkness, adding Torchwood-specific references.

He also d ire c te d th e prem ieres o f A Slice o f Saturday N ig h t and th e w o rld prem ieres o f Rebecca Storm 's H o lly w o o d Ladies and Brian O 'R eilly's Buskin' at the Tivoli Theatre. Theatre in Education C redits: Devised and d ire c te d Learning T hrough The A rts In Breaking The Cycle Schools fo r th e D e p a rtm e n t o f Education in 2001. He also devised w ith Joe O 'D o n n e ll th e aw a rd -w in ning m elodram a.

The Hands o f D o o m fo r th e Food Safety P ro m o tion Board in 2004. In June 2005 he devised and d ire c te d St. M ichael's House 50th Anniversary p ro d u c tio n Let's Celebrate In The Helix involving a cast o f 400 students w ith intellectual disability. N oel recently p ro d u c e d and d ire cte d Honk! in The Helix, w ith a cast o f 350 children from 15 prim ary schools in th e D ublin D ocklands area.

MARINA KEALY - Choreographer Marina has been involved w ith dance fro m an early age. She has p e rfo rm e d in all th e m ajor theatres, professional caba re t and on national television. M arina's w o rk has been w id e and varied. H aving danced in num erous John Player Tops o f th e Town finals, she was d e lig h te d w hen th e show she ch o re o g ra p h e d reached th e national final and was bro ad cast live by RTE. O th e r successes in c lu d e , G o d s p e ll, Chess, Guys a n d Dolls, J o s e p h a n d th e A m a z in g Technicolor Dream coat, West Side Story, Jesus Christ Superstar, W o n de rfu l Town and m any dance w orksho ps th ro u g h o u t th e country.

Marina's w o rk received a n o m in atio n fro m A IM S fo r Grease and w on Best C h o re o g ra p h e r Aw ard fro m b o th A IM S and th e B angor Festival fo r her w o rk in M e a n d M y Girl. F ollow ing this M arina was asked to co -ch o re o g ra p h the professional p ro d u c tio n o f M e a n d M y Girl a t th e O ly m p ia Theatre. M arina has a long association w ith th e R&R. Firstly as a dancer, and p e rfo rm e r in th e role o f Liat in South Pacific. She successfully ch o re o g ra p h e d th e R&R p ro d u ctio n s o f The Pirates o f Penzance, the R&R 90th Birthday C elebration, M y Fair Lady, The Yeomen o f the Guard and Gigi. She recently c h o reo grap he d th e very successful p ro d u c tio n o f Chess fo r Glasnevin M usical Society and was D ire c to r/C h o re o g ra p h e r fo r th e R&R's last p ro d u ctio n . GEAROID GRANT - Musical Director G earoid was born in D ublin and g ra d u a te d w ith a B.Mus d e g re e from University C olleg e D ublin. Since then he has c o m b in e d a freelance career as co n d u c to r w ith a career in music education. He has co n d u c te d all th e principal orchestras in Ireland, th e N ational Sym phony O rchestra, th e RTE C o n c e rt O rchestra, th e Ulster O rchestra, the Irish C ham ber O rchestra and th e N atio na l Youth Orchestra o f Ireland.

G earoid devised and continues to pre sen t and c o n d u c t th e acclaim ed series Music in the Classroom which in tro du ces music to 30,000 Irish children annually, w ith perform ances at th e N ational C o n c e rt Hall in D ublin and in m ajor venues around Ireland. The p ro g ra m m e is d e v e lo p e d in co njun ction w ith RTE, The Irish Tim es and th e D e p a rtm e n t o f Education. He has to u re d in England w ith th e Irish C ham ber Orchestra. He has c o n d u c te d all o f Shaun Davey's m ajor w orks, and prem ieres o f Shaun Davey's Relief o f D erry Sym p ho ny in 1989 and his C o n c e rto ifor Uilleann Pipe p e rfo rm e d fo r th e firs t tim e at G reenw ich Festival in London.

These w orks are reco rd ed fo r Tara Records. He has d o n e a g re at deal o f film w o rk w ith th e Irish Film O rchestra, o f w hich he is Associate Musical Director. N o stranger t o television and th ea tre, G e aroid G ra n t has c o n d u cte d a w id e re p e rto ire ranging from M o za rt to Sondheim .

G e aroid has been th e c o n d u c to r o f th e N ational Youth O rchestra o f Ireland U nder 18s since it was fo rm e d in 1980 and is a m em b e r o f th e Board o f th e NYOI. He has been th e Musical D ire cto r w ith th e R&R fo r over 25 years.

JACKIE CURRAN-OLOHAN - Chorus Director Jackie has a d istinguished career as a perform er, musician, director, chorus d ire c to r and teacher. Her musical e du catio n th riv e d u n d e r Sr. A g ne s N olan at St. M ary's C ollege, A rklow , Eithne Troy at th e C o lle g e o f M usic and su bsequently UCD from w hich she g ra d u a te d w ith a B Mus. (Hons.).

Jackie has been M usic D ire cto r and C o n d u c to r fo r m any show prem ieres inclu ding A n y th in g Goes in 1991 w ith DAYMS d ire c te d by Brian M errim an and was aw arded Best M usic D ire ctor at th e W a te rfo rd In ternational Festival o f Light O p e ra fo r Stephen Sondheim 's Into th e Woods. This, and c o n d u c tin g her late father, Chris, in Annie at th e O lym pia, she regards as her h ig h lig h ts to date.

She is M usical D ire ctor o f M .YTh. p ro d u c tio n s, W ic k lo w and has a pp ea re d w ith th e R&R, Glasnevin Musical Society, Jim M o llo y P roductions and Festival Productions. She played Ruth in The Pirates o f Penzance and her m o st recent role was th a t o f Katisha in Festival P roduction's a w a rd -w in ning The M ik a d o in w hich she received th e Best C haracter Actress at th e Buxton International Festival o f G ilb e rt & Sullivan last year. Jackie enjoyed playing th e p a rt o f The Duchess o f Plaza Toro in th e R&R's p ro d u c tio n o f The Gondoliers at th e NCH. A lo n g w ith her husband, Sean, she p erfo rm s w ith th e singing gro up , Avoca, w h o have ju st released th e ir m ost recent CD. W e wish Jackie co n tin u e d success.

GERRY McKNIGHT - Production & Stage Manager G erry has been involved w ith th e th e a tre since 1972. He becam e a m e m b e r o f th e R&R stage crew fo r th e 1989 p ro d u c tio n o f Hello D o lly at th e G a iety Theatre and he has been involved m ainly in stage m a n a g e m e n t and props. This year G erry is d e lig h te d to take on th e role o f P ro du ction and Stage M anager fo r A n y th in g Goes at th e N ational C o n c e rt Hall.

He has w o rk e d w ith many musical and d ra m a tic societies, Loreto, St. Louis, M uckross, Take Four, Kilm acud, Bray, G reystones, C oo lm in e , O 'C o n ne lls, D undrum , G lencullen, Bank o f Ireland, A llie d Irish Banks, John Player Tops (Irish Life, Technicon), Bord Gais Players, C astleknock School o f Dance, D e b b ie Allen School o f Dance, P e m be rto n C lu b and Red Rua Theatre C o m p a n y as set designer, set builder, p ro p maker, lig h tin g , stage m anager o r p ro p master. He has been n om in ated by AIM S fo r b e s t stage m anager th re e tim es and is the recipie nt o f th e Best Stage M anager's Aw ard fro m th e W a te rfo rd International Festival o f L ig ht O pera.

G erry is currently e m p lo ye d by Co. W ic k lo w VEC w here he tu to rs in p e rfo rm in g arts p ro d u c tio n studies. This th re e year d ip lo m a course prepares stu d e n ts fo r th e final year o f th e U niversity o f Wales honours d e g re e in Perform ance Arts.

OUR PRINCIPALS SHARON SEXTON - Reno Sweeney Sharon is origin ally from Naas and d e ve lo p e d a love o f acting and musical th e a tre fro m a very young age. She g ra d u a te d fro m DIT's C onservatory o f Music and Dram a w ith a d eg re e in Theatre Studies 4 years ago. Since th en she has w o rk e d consistently on stage and screen, m ost recently having played th e role o f N ora in a musical w orksho p o f H im se lf and Nora w ith Longroad Productions in th e N e w Theatre. This year, Sharon co m p le te d a national to u r o f Lane P roductions' I Keano, playing th e role o f Surfia, a role which she will revisit in Jan o f n ext year.

She has trea d th e boards o f th e NCH befo re , m ost recently playing Lilly St. Regis in Festival Production's Annie last Christmas. Sharon is co -d ire c to r o f Biscuits fo r Breakfast Theatre C om pa ny which she co -fo u n d e d in 2004. She also teaches singing and Musical Theatre in th e In d e p e n d e n t Theatre W orkshop. She is d e lig h te d to be w o rkin g w ith th e R&R fo r th e first tim e on such a fun show and w ou ld like to wish everyone involved th e very best o f luck w ith th e run!

SHARON MURPHY - Hope Harcourt This is Sharon's first appearance w ith Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society and is d e lig h te d to have been given th e o p p o rtu n ity to play th e p a rt o f H ope in this p ro d u c tio n . A m e m b e r o f Kilcock MS since 1991, Sharon has played leading roles inclu ding Rizzo in Grease, Anna in The King & I, Model in F idd le r on the Roof, Maria in The Sound o f Music, M ary M ag d a le n e in Jesus Christ Superstar, A ld on za in M an o f La Mancha (for which she received an A IM S Best Actress N o m ina tion ), Johanna in Sweeney Todd (AIMS Best Show 2003), M abel in The Pirates o f Penzance, C atherine in Pippin, Julie Jordan in Carousel (with Kilcock and H arold's Cross Tallaght MS) and Sukie in The W itches o f Eastwick. Sharon has also played A n ne lle in Steel M agnolias and th e Evil Q ueen in Snow Whitel Sharon has p e rfo rm e d w ith Full Circle Theatre C om pa ny in th e ir Once U po n a Tim e /F ro m Stage to Screen co n ce rt p ro d u c tio n , has sung w ith th e Tom m y Flem ing C ho ir on his 200 6/7 Irish to u r and m ost recently p e rfo rm e d in th e O ne Voice concert p ro d u c tio n in th e G a iety Theatre. LESLEY BYRNE - Evangeline Harcourt Lesley has played some o f th e most famous parts in the musical theatre including Sally in M e a nd M y Girl, Svetlana in Chess, th e title role in Irene, G a b b i/B o b b y in C ity o f Angels, Fastrada in Pippin, Calam in Calamity Jane, Reno in Anything Goes, Ruth in N ew Pirates o f Penzance, A u rora/S pid erw o m an in Kiss o f th e Spiderwoman, Lottie in Mack and Mabel, Mrs Sowerberry in Oliver w ith Festival Productions and Countess Markiewicz in Larkin. She has also appeared as a soloist in the National C oncert Hall and the Theatre Royal W aterford.

Her awards include. Best Com edienne, Best Actress and A djudicators awards in NIFLO. Runner-up Best Actress with AIMS as Roxie Hart in Chicago with Bord Gais 1995.

Runner up Best Singer in AIMS as Dolly Levi in Hello Dolly with Baldoyle M.S. in 2000.

Television work includes O f f the Rails fo r RTE. However, you would most recently have seen her as Jacqueline in La Cages A ux Folles with DAYMS in the SFX. She is looking forward immensely to playing Evangeline Harcourt w ith the R&R and hopes you enjoy th e show!.

PAUL KELLY - Lord Evelyn Oakleigh Paul has sung various roles in G ilb e rt & Sullivan w ith th e R&R as well as Freddie in M y Fair Lady. He has also sung regularly in th e Society's concerts at th e NCH. In a d d itio n , Paul has sung roles in operas by M ozart, Handel, Poulenc, Smetena, A. J. Potter and James W ilson in a d d itio n to m aking extensive appearances in o p e re tta and musical comedy.

He has also appeared on the co nce rt p la tfo rm in o ra to rio in clu ding Messiah, Bach's St. Jo hn Passion, Haydn's C reation and Elijah by M en de lso hn as w ell as in recital at the John Field Room.

COLM LALOR - Elisha Whitney C olm was born and still lives in D ublin and cam e to singing and th e stage after injury end ed an athletics career in w hich he had run over 31,000 miles.

The c o m p e titiv e spirit (and lungs) having been established, he beg an voice tra in in g im m ed iately w ith Edith Forrest. He has played such te n o r roles as Camille, Mr. Snow, Phillipe, Frederick, Hilarion, Sid el Kar and others w ith m ore th an fiftee n d iffe re n t musical societies. In recent years C olm has been a reg ular w ith th e R&R, captaining th e ir HMS Pinafore in th e N C H and playing Mr. Snow in Carousel at th e Gaiety.

MICHAEL EVANS - Billy Crocker A native o f D ublin, M ichael has had th e great fo rtu n e o f w o rk in g w ith m any musical societies th ro u g h o u t Ireland. Previous roles include The Emcee in Cabaret, Nanky Poo in The H o t M ika do , B o bb y C hild in Crazy For You, Ju n io r in On Your Toes, Pippin in Pippin, Paul in A Chorus Line and M olina in Kiss O f The Sp ider Woman, which he p e rfo rm e d at th e W IFLO in 1999 earning him Best M ale Performer. O th e r awards include Best S u p p o rtin g M ale W IFLO and seven N ational AIM S Awards.

JENNY McCABE - Erma Singing since c h ild h o o d Jenny has progressed fro m leading roles in school musicals to p e rfo rm in g in venues such as The Helix, RDS C o n ce rt Hall, The O ly m p ia Theatre, The N ational C o n ce rt Hall, The G a iety and The Point Theatre.

In 2003 and in her very first stage role, Jenny w o n th e Best S u p p o rtin g Female award at th e W a te rfo rd International Festival o f L ig ht O pera, fo r her role as M a g g ie Jones in 4 2 n d Street. In 2006 she earned a Best C om e d ie n n e n o m in a tio n fo r her role as A u d re y in Little Shop o f Horrors.

She has also p e rfo rm e d excerpts from shows like M y Fair Lady (Eliza) Les M iserables (Eponine), M artin Guerre (Bertrande), The Scarlett Pim pernel (Marianne), The Sound o f Music (Maria), C h itty C h itty Bang Bang (Truly Scrum ptious), Cats (Grizabella) and many m ore in venues like th e N ational C o n ce rt Hall and th e O lym pia Theatre.

J e nn y has s u p p o rte d and a pp ea re d w ith artists like June Rogers, Tom m y F lem m ing (A life like m ine tour), Jo h n n y McEvoy, Ju lie t Turner, Charlie M c G e ttig a n and Sharon Shannon. She recently a ppeared w ith Shayne W ard on Tubridy Tonight and was p a rt o f th e vocal g ro u p which backed Josh G roban in th e Point Theatre earlier th is year. She shared th e stage w ith Rebecca S torm and Peter C o rry this year as th e y p e rfo rm e d as special g uests in M o o n l i g h t a nd Music.

COLE PORTER - BIOGRAPHY The only child o f Samuel Fenwick, a druggist, and Kate Cole, Cole Porter, born in Peru, Indiana on June 9th, 1891, was given a lot o f attention. His parents offered him o pportunities to study music, acting, or anything else he wanted, but he o pte d to study violin and piano.

Starting at an early age. Porter had completed his first song, "Song o f the Birds", by the age o f ten. A few years later, his m other had his piece, "The Bobolink W altz", published. A few years later, his parents decided to send him to a private boarding school called Worcester Academy, in Massachusettes, which was said to have a strong music departm ent. He entered Yale a few years later. The large size of the university allowed him to find many musical opportunities, from w riting tw o of Yale's best known football songs ("Bull D og " and "Bingo Eh Yale") to accompanying vocal groups and musical productions. Porter graduated with a "M ost Entertaining", award.

During his junior year o f college.

Cole Porter created his first show, See America First. Unfortunately, it was not very well-received by audiences, and as a result, ran for only 115 performances before closing. However, many say that had Porter not had this initial set-back, he w ould not have had the m otivation to push forward and make one o f the smartest moves of his life - he moved to France. While in France, Porter had an opportunity to practice song-writing, and w rote songs such as "An Old-Fashioned Garden", which was his first popular hit, for a 1919 show title d Hitchy Koo. That same year. Cole Porter m et and married Linda Lee Thomas, a wealthy woman who was considered by many to be the most beautiful woman in the world. They remained married for thirty-five years, until her death in 1954.

Although Cole Porter had a large group o f friends, many o f them d id n 't understand his career, and often encouraged him to 'retire', living o ff of the abundant money from his wife. They saw his song-writing career and purely geared tow ard his friends, and th o u g h t he w rote only amusing party songs. However, Porter was very serious about his career, and in 1923, he shocked them all when he w rote the score fo r Within The Quota, a jazz ballet written by Gerald Murphy.

Late in the 1920's, Cole Porter and his wife decided that the place to go, if Porter was going to make a name for himself, was Broadway. And so he did. In 1928, Porter introduced his first Broadway show, Paris, which featured

songs such as "Let's Do It, Let's Fall In Love", which is now considered a timeless, sophisticated piece. The next year. Porter created Fifty Million Frenchmen, featuring "You Do Something To M e" and "You've G ot That Thing". It was at this tim e th a t Cole Porter began developing a signature style, which blended humor, sensuality, and innuendo.

Although the 1920's were im portant years in Porter's life, nothing could compare to the 1930's. In this decade, it seemed th at Porter spat out hit after hit after hit with no forseen end! Am ong his hit shows were The N ew Yorkers, Gay Divorce, Jubilee, Dubarry was a Lady, and Red H ot and Blue. In addition. Porter w rote the score fo r many H ollywood musicals (including Born to Dance and Rosalie).

Toward the end o f the decade, in 1937, however. Porter g o t in a serious horseback riding accident.

A lthough the doctors finally decided (after much thought) against am putating his legs, the th irty surgeries in the years to come were no easier to take, especially because the majority o f them were unsuccessful. Cole Porter attem pted to remedy this by delving deeper into his work, and in the early 1940's, Porter created a fe w shows, including Panama Hattie, Let's Face It, and Something for the Boys.

These were not well-received, and many th o u g h t he had lost his gift.

However, as proven earlier. Porter was very m otivated by failure, and he thus proceeded to create the shows which w ould be the biggest successes o f his career. In 1948, Porter w rote Kiss Me, Kate, a musical based on Shakespeare's The Taming o f the Shrew. It ran fo r over 1,000 performances. The next year, he came out with Anything Goes, which almost paralleled Kiss Me, Kate's success. He had shown them all th at there was still something left in him However, after proving his point. Porter's m otivation began to die down, and although he did create a few more shows, among them Can-Can, Silk Stockings, and High Society, Porter's last years were far from wonderful. Having his wife die in 1954, and having his leg am putated in 1958, Porter was left somewhat alone and sad.

However, these last years of Cole Porter's life are no representation of his career, which was filled w ith excitement, energy, and hapiness. In 1960, he was honored w ith an honorary doctorate from Yale. It let him know th at no one w ould fo rg e t him, and th at all his talent was understood and appreciated. Porter died fo u r years later.

ROBBIE KEOGH - Luke This is Robbie's eleventh year w ith th e R&R. His firs t show was South Pacific where he played Lt. Buzz A dam s and has played parts in a lm ost every show since. He was also involved w ith C o o lm in e Panto G ro u p w he re he played th e lead in a n um be r o f p antom im es. In May 2000 he played th e p a rt o f Benny S o uthstre et in Knocklyon Variety G roup's p ro d u c tio n o f Guys a n d Dolls in th e Civic T heatre in Tallaght. In 2002 he played in C loud 9's p ro d u c tio n o f A View From a B ridg e by A rth u r M iller in A ndrew 's Lane Theatre.

His m ost recent role was as Eugene F od or in Crazy For You w ith th e Pioneer Musical Society at the D ra io ch t Theatre, Blanchardstow n. R obbie is d e lig h te d to be playing th e p art o f Luke and hopes you all e njoy to n ig h t's p erform ance.

SHAY GIBSON - John Shay jo in e d th e R&R in 2001, having p e rfo rm e d extensively w ith o th e r musical societies such as A rthur's Team, O 'C onnell's, Glasnevin and Festival Productions, to name b u t a few. He has played m any roles, b u t his fa v o u rite was th a t o f Fagin in Oliver!

These days, Shay divides him self fro m Hon. M a rke tin g Secretary to a m e m b e r o f th e Casting and C o n ce rt C om m itte e s w hilst p e rfo rm in g w ith th e R&R in all th e ir pro d u c tio n s each year.

This year, Shay tackles th e p art o f John, a Chinese convert, and hopes he will g e t it ju s t 'w ig h t' and th a t you enjoy th e show.

PASCHAL WALSH - Bartender Paschal jo in e d th e R&R in 1962 fo r th e Society's p ro d u c tio n o f W ild Violets. He has fa ithfully p e rfo rm e d in a lm ost all o f th e R&R p ro d u c tio n s since th e n and a m o n g the many parts he has played, his favou rite s include Luther Billis in South Pacific and Buffalo Bill in A n nie G e t Your Gun.

In 1972 Paschal played th e p art o f M e n d e l in th e R&R's origin al p ro d u c tio n o f F id d le r on the R o o f and in 1998 when th e society staged th e show again Paschal played th e p a rt o f M ordcha. He also played th e p art o f th e Rabbi in th e R&R's latest p ro d u c tio n o f th e same show in 2006.

TYNAN HOOPER - Minister Henry P. Dobson Tynan stu die d in the G aiety School o f A c tin g and from a yo un g age has been very much involved in musical theatre. He starred in several a m ateur p ro d u ctio n s inclu ding : Jesus Christ Superstar, G o d s p e ll and J o sep h a n d th e A m a zin g Technicolor D re a m co a t w here he played Jesus in all o f th e abo ve p ro du ction s. He also has p e rfo rm e d several tim es in th e N ational C o n c e rt Hall singing hits from various musicals and a ppeared in several p ro d u c tio n s such as th e W izard o f Oz to hits from West Side Story.

He has also a ppeared on many television p ro g ra m m e s fo r RTE fro m The Late Late S how to Fair C ity plus many children's television p ro gram m es. Since jo in in g the R&R Musical Society in 2002 Tynan's love fo r musical th e a tre has g ro w n . He has e njoyed b eing involved in M e & M y Girl and M y Fair Lady. He p layed M aitre Duclos in th e ir p ro d u c tio n o f G ig i and has also fe a tu re d in many NCH p ro d u c tio n s w ith th e R&R such as th e ir 90th C ele bratio n C o n c e rt and R om berg to Rodgers to several o f th e ir G&S productions. HISTORY OF TAP DANCE Tap Dance, style o f American theatrical dance, distinguished by percussive foo tw o rk , th a t marks o u t precise rhythm ic patterns on the floor. Some descriptive step names are brush, flap, shuffle, ball change, and cram p roll.

The sources o f ta p dancing include the Irish solo step dance, the English clog dance, and African dance movements. A m o n g the slaves in the southern United States, these m erged by the early 19th century into folk styles, th e m odern descendants o f which include buck-and-wing dancing and southern United States clo gging (both d on e in leather-sole shoes). The slave dances were ada p te d theatrically in 1828 in the first blackface minstrel show, in the dancing of Thom as "D a d d y" Rice. In late 19th-century minstrel shows and sh ow b o at routines, tw o techniques were popularized: a fast style in w o od e n-sole shoes, also called buck-and-wing, e xe m p lifie d by the d u o o f Jim m y Doyle and Harland Dixon; and soft-shoe, a sm ooth, leather-

sole style m ade fam ous by G eorge Primrose.

These styles gradually coalesced, and by the 1920s metal plates, o r taps, had been a dd e d to leather-soled shoes. In the 1920s and 1930s black dancers c o n trib u te d to th e d e v e lo p m e n t o f new styles o f ta p dance, and black dance teams became p o p u la r fo r th e ir acrobatic, ofte n satirical acts. John Bubbles popularized a slower, more syncopated style o f ta p dance. P rom inent dance teams o f th e era included Slap and Happy (Harold Daniels and Leslie Irvin) and Stum p and Stumpy (James Cross and Harold Cromer). Jazz provided fu rth e r rhythm ic com plexity, and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson became Am erica's most famous tap dancer. The style was furthe r expanded in the 1930s and 1940s, when dancers such as Fred Astaire, Paul Draper, Ray Bolger, and, in the late 1950s, Gene Kelly added movem ents from ballet and m odern dance. In the late 1970s and early 1980s interest in ta p dance underw ent a resurgence.

M arketing w ith the R&R Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society is heading for a milestone in theatrical circles having been in business for just under 100 years.

N o t many can boast o f such a feat, but their standards and expertise in stagecraft have kept them up there with the best of the rest.

Renowned for their professional style productions in both the Gaiety Theatre and the National Concert Hall, the 'R and R', as we are sometimes known, has made many appearances on the Late Late Show and has partaken in a string of professional gigs with the stars o f both stage and screen. In fact, some o f our artists have now become professionals in their own right.

Last year's productions. The Gondoliers and Lets Celebrate the Magic o f the Musicals!, received much acclaim and were covered extensively by various critics. Record numbers have attended our shows and capacity houses are now a seasonal norm. Feed back from our audiences is always positive which makes them return season after season.

Celebrities such as Terry Wogan and Gay Byrne are among the many patrons who graced our productions both on and o ff the stage and have publicly praised our professionalism and style.

Backed by a team o f experts, Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society strive to present the best entertainm ent possible fo r all ages to enjoy, year after year.

In staging our productions, no stone is left

unturned and the image we portray is as good as it can get. As part of any show, a Programme is most im portant and for us it is also a lasting record o f the show and its participants. Every season we produce an A4 glossy souvenir brochure-type programme which contains details o f the show, the society, its participants and supporters. Potential advertisers can choose between Full Page or Half Page and our rates are as com petitive as you will find in any similar type brochure. Anything Goes fo r the new R&R Honorary General Secretary W ell w hatever a b o u t A n y th in g Goes it's certainly all g o fo r me since July.

It was in July at th e A G M th a t th e R&R m em bership elected me General Secretary fo r th e 2007/8 year.

For those w ho are n ot fam iliar w ith h o w th e R&R operates, the Gen. Sec. is th e person th e Society entrusts w ith th e overall w elfare o f the organisation. M y jo b includes keeping an eye on th e day-to-day activities th a t a voluntary organisation o f th e size and co m p le xity o f th e R&R dem ands. I d o this by encouraging the Executive C o m m itte e M em bers to maximise th e ir in p u t into th e Society's activities in a way th a t reflects m odern governance and transparency norm s and responsibilities. As Gen. Sec. 1 am also responsible fo r th e stra te g ic d e v e lo p m e n t o f th e Society, p articularly g o in g forw a rd tow ards our 2013 C entenary Year.

1 have been part o f th e R&R as an A ctive M e m b e r since 1991. As a chorus m e m b er I p a rtic ip a te d in a num be r o f p ro du ction s and had th e personal p rivilege o f having Heather Hewson teach me th e nuances o f singing in some o f G ilb e rt & Sullivan's operettas. I served on th e Executive C o m m itte e initially as an A ctive M e m b ers' representative. S ubsequently I was elected M a rke ting Secretary and regularly assisted in F ront o f House duties during R&R productions. I te m p o ra rily w ith d re w fro m the Society's activities in 2004 in o rd e r to c o m p le te an MSc in Executive Leadership from th e University o f Ulster.

As my election has shown, situations o f organisational change b rin g w ith the m new vision, new approaches and new challenges particularly in p ro m o tin g , in a changing national social environm ent, th e w e ll-te sted R&R tra d itio n a l values o f q ua lity and fairness. It is my o pin io n th a t now more th e n ever th e R&R needs to reflect the o u tlo o k o f a m odern vibrant, ye t vo lun ta ry organisation if it is to sustain itse lf in to th e future.

The e x cite m e n t in the R&R as we approach our 100th Birthday is alm ost palpable. However, th e d em an d o f m aintaining a voluntary organisation, o f th e historical calibre o f th e R&R and in a m odern Ireland co nte xt, remains my key goal. I tru s t th a t w ith a m odern organisational o u tlo o k the R&R will c o ntin u e to entertain you in th e futu re w ith quality musical p ro du ction s sim ilar to 2007's A ny th in g Goes.
