A Welcome to You From the President o f the Rathmines & Rathgar M usical Society As President of the Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society it is my pleasure to welcome you to our Autumn presentation here at the National Concert Hall, which is Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Yeomen o f the Guard.

As is known to all ‘G & S’ devotees, ‘Yeomen’ is quite different to the other light operas created by these two theatrical geniuses.

Gone is Gilbert’s satirical script, poking fun at ‘The Establishment’ and at society in general.

Gone is the topsy-turvy storyline concerning somewhat cardboard characters.

Gone is the whimsical and complicated plot with its inevitable happy ending.

The Yeomen o f the Guard is a story of real people who lived in and around the grim Tower of London in the 16th century and indeed, Gilbert’s libretto echoes the dialogue of the period. Sullivan’s delightful musical score tends towards the ‘Grand’ rather than the ‘Light’ opera and here and there is Tudor in style.

We hope you will enjoy our 2004 production of The Yeomen of the Guard. The Society’s first presentation of this fine piece of theatre was in 1914 - ninety years ago!

GUARD The Yeomen of the Guard, or The Merryman and His Maid, opened October 3, 1888, at the Savoy Theatre and ran for 423 performances. The darkest of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. Yeomen ends with a broken­ hearted main character and at least tw/o reluctant engagements, rather than the usual armful of marriages. However, Gilbert’s ‘pointed’ satire and oneliners abound, there are plenty of topsy-turvy plot complications, and many believe that the score is Sullivan’s finest. Indeed, some enjoy Yeomen particularly because of its ever-changing emotional balance of joy and despair, love and sacrifice.

The setting of Yeomen is laid in the Tower of London in Shakespearean times. Colonel Fairfax is sentenced to die in an hour on a false charge of sorcery. To avoid leaving his estate to his accuser, and Vidth the help of the Lieutenant of the Tower, he secretly marries Elsie Maynard, a strolling nger, who expects to be a well-paid widow in an Dur. With the help of the Meryll family, Fairfax :apes, throwing the Tower and the astonished Elsie into despair. But the disguised Fairfax WOOS Elsie, and in the end, she loves Fairfax and jilts her intended husband, the jester Jack Point.

GARRY MOUNTAINE - Director Garry studied with Dr Veronica Dunne at the Leinster School of Music and at the RIAM with Professor Paul Deegan.

He appeared in Mahogany Songspiel fOpera Theatre Company, Dublin Theatre Festival) and In Company With Sondheim fSceanario, National Concert Hall). He has played many roles including Tevye in Fiddler on the R oof (Gaiety Theatre), Ramades in Risen People (Gaiety Theatre), Emile de Becque in South Pacific (Gaiety Theatre), Joe Kellor in All My Sons (Andrews Lane Theatre), Eddie Carbone in A View from the Bridge (Andrews Lane Theatre), Sam Byck in Assassins (The Beckett Theatre), Khruschev in JFK (Olympia Theatre), Dancairo in Carmen (National Concert Hall), The Man in Buskin (Tivoli Theatre), Nathan Detroit in Guys & Dolls (Gaiety Theatre), and most recently Prof. Henry Higgins in M y Fair Lady (Gaiety Theatre).

With the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company he played Poo-Bah in their production of The Mikado and Wilfred Shadbolt in Yeomen o f the Guard (Sadler’s Wells Theatre, UK).

Television and radio work include The Late Late Show, Live at 3 and Theatre Nights. He also appeared in the BBC productions of The Mikado and Yeomen o f the Guard.

Last year Garry co-directed the R&R’s 90th Birthday Celebration Concert, having previously directed The Mikado (2001) and The Pirates o f Penzance (2002), both at the National Concert Hall.

GEAROID GRANT - Musical Director Gearoid Grant was born in Dublin and graduated with a B.Mus degree from University College Dublin. Since then he has combined a freelance career as conductor with a career in music education. He has conducted all the principal orchestras in Ireland, the National Symphony Orchestra, the RTE Concert Orchestra, the Ulster Orchestra, the Irish Chamber Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland.

Gearoid devised and continues to present and conduct the acclaimed series Music in the Classroom which introduces music to 30,000 Irish children annually, with performances at the National Concert Hall in Dublin and in major venues around Ireland. The programme is developed in conjunction with RTE, The Irish Times and the Department of Education. Gearoid has toured in England with the Irish Chamber Orchestra. He has conducted all of Shaun Davey’s major works, and premieres of Shaun Davey’s Relief o f Derry Symphony in 1989 and his Concerto for Uilleann Pipe performed for the first time at Greenwich Festival in London. These works are recorded for Tara Records. He has done a great deal of film work with the Irish Film Orchestra, of which he is Associate Musical Director. No stranger to television and theatre, Gearoid Grant has conducted a wide repertoire ranging from Mozart to Sondheim.

Gearoid has been the conductor of the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland Under 18s since it was formed in 1980 and is a member of the Board of the NYOl. Gearoid has been the Musical Director with the R&R for over 25 years

JACKIE CORRAN-OLOHAN - Chorus Director Daughter of Josephine Scanlon and the late Chris Curran, Jackie has distinguished herself as a performer, musician, music director, chorus master and teacher. Her musical education thrived under Sr. Agnes Nolan at St. Mary’s College, Arklow, Eithne Troy at the College of Music and subsequently GCD from which she graduated with a B Mus. (Hons.).

Jackie has been Music Director and Conductor for many show premieres and was awarded Best Music Director at the Waterford Festival of Light Opera for Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods. This, and conducting her father in Annie at the Olympia, she regards as her highlights to date.

As a performer she has appeared at the NCH and on RTE radio and television.

Jackie enjoyed working with Lyric Opera in the NCH recently.

MARINA KEALY - Movement & Staging Marina has been involved with dance from an early age. She has performed in all the major theatres, professional cabaret and on national television. Marina’s work has been wide and varied. Having danced in numerous John Player Tops o f the Town finals, she was delighted when the show she choreographed reached the national final and was broadcast live by RTE. Other successes include, Godspell, Chess, Guys and Dolls, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, West Side Story, Jesus Christ Superstar, Wonderful Town and many dance workshops throughout the country.

Marina’s work received a nomination from AIMS for Grease and won Best Choreographer Award from both AIMS and the Bangor Festival for her work in Me and My Girl. Following this Marina was asked to co­ choreograph the professional production of Me and My Gid at the Olympia Theatre. Marina has a long association with the R&R. Firstly as a dancer, and performer in the role of Liat in South Pacific. She then successfully choreographed the R&R production of The Pirates o f Penzance in the NCH and also choreographed the R&R 90th Birthday Celebration during 2003. Marina is pleased to be involved in this production of The Yeomen o f the Guard and thanks the cast for all their hard work.

JOHN O’DONOGHUE - Set Design John is a graduate of the National College of Art and Design. His recent design credits include: Hamlet (Cork Opera House), La Boheme (Lyric Opera), Into the Woods (Full Circle) and Camelot (Festival Productions). For the R&R Musical Society he has designed their 90th Anniversary Concert, their recent G&S The Mikado and The Pirates o f Penzance productions, Oklahoma!, Guys and Dolls, Fiddler on the Roof and A Century o f Song.

Other credits include: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and Jack & the Beanstalk (Cork Opera House), The Sound o f Music, La Traviata and Oliver (NCH), Dog House and The Hired Man (Draiocht), Buskin (Tivoli Theatre & Cork Opera House), Return to the Forbidden Planet, Oncle Oncle and loathing Compares to You (Andrews Lane Theatre). MYLES ANTONY - Logo Design Born in Dublin, Myles lived in Rathmines until he was 18 wiien he re-located to London to complete his art studies programme. He has always been an admirer of the R&R and claims that it was the Society’s production of The Dancing Years in the 1950’s that began his life-long love affair with musical theatre.

Myles returned to live in Dublin in 2003. This is his second commissioned work on behalf of the Society having designed earlier this year the R&R show logo for the My Fair Lady production in the Gaiety Theatre.

Myles is pleased to have renewed his association with the R&R. He is currently working on the design of the show logo for the R&R 2005 Winter Season’s production of Lerner & Loewe’s Gigi.

Paul Kelly studied with Dr. Veronica Dunne at the College of Music, Dublin and has won many prizes for his singing including the John McCormack Cup at the Feis Ceoil. Paul has sung roles in operas by Handel, Mozart, Smetana and Poulenc and has many roles to his credit in light opera. Equally at home on the concert platform, he has given several song and lieder recitals and has regularly featured in performanaces of oratorio.

He is well known to Dublin audiences for his appearances with the R&R for whom he has sung Col. Fairfax, Nanki Poo and Frederick in the Gilbert & Sulllivan repertoire as well as appearing in several of its concerts at the NCH and musicals in the Gaiety.

Elsie Maynard

Sadhbh Dennedy is currently studying for a B.Mus. Performance Degree in DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama. She has been studying singing with Mary Brennan since the age of fourteen. She is in her final year of the music course. Sadhbh has had great success competitively. She is a Feis Ceoil prizewinner since the age of fifteen, recently winning the Soprano Solo competition. She also is a Ballymena Festival prizewinner, where last year she won numerous awards, including the Soprano Solo competition.

Recent performances include the original composition of ‘Hongongalongalo’

by George Higgs, which was performed in the Fringe Festival this year, where Sadhbh was the soprano soloist. She played the role of the Countess in DlT’s Might at the Opera in the NCH (2004). She sang with the chorus in Opera Ireland’s production of Jenufa and Tosca (2004). In 2003, Sadhbh was the soprano soloist for the world premiere of a commissioned work by Eilis Farrell, accompanied by the RTE Concert Orchestra. Sadhbh has been very successful in college too, winning numerous awards, including the Leo Maguire Cup. Last year, she achieved the highest mark in her college for her performance end-of-year exam.

Sadhbh is currently playing the role of Susanna in her college’s performance in the end of year exam of The Marriage of Figaro, which is in the Gaiety Theatre this week.

JOHN MOONEY - Jack Point John developed his taste for the stage in school, where he played in a variety of musicals and plays, winning a best actor award in Feis Atha Cliath. Vocally, John trained initially in the College of Music and then moved to the Royal Irish Academy of Music where he studied under the direction of Professor Paul Deegan.

HeJias played many lead roles that include the Barrister in Trial by Jury, Ozzie in Irene, Action in West Side Story, Petrucio in Kiss Me, Kate; Barnaby in Hello Dolly, Giuseppe in the Gondoliers, the Beadle in Sw eeny Todd and John Hinckley in Assassins.

He has appeared on RTE television and radio. He has sung in a wide range of concerts in all the main Irish venues including the NCH. In 2002 John played the lead role. Bill Snipson, in the R&R’s production of Me and My Girl in Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre. John last played with the R&R in its 90th Birthday G&S concert in 2003.

ROISIN SULLIVAN - Phoebe Meryll Rolsin began her dance and theatre training at a young age with the Billie Barry Stage School and was also a student at the Gladys Sheehan School of Drama.

Roisin played the lead in the R&R production in My Fair Lady of Eliza Doolittle in March of this year. She has gone on to join the European tour of Riverdance where she sang lead for the show. She sings with her sister Aisling in their own musical theatre show Melodies o f the Musicals. Other theatre credits include the role of Anne Dindon in La Cage Aux Folles (presented by DAYMS - The Musical Workshop, SFX City Theatre), soloist in the Glasnevin Musical Society’s production of Showstoppers on Tour, ensemble for Grace (new musical workshop for Abhann Productions), Les Mis&ables Masterclass (London), Singing Out! (Bewleys Cafe Theatre), Celebration, Dance Everybody Dance, The Millenniunri Beat, and All I Wanna Do Is Dance (Gaiety Theatre), The Wizard o f Oz (The Olympia), and Oklahoma! with Festival Productions in the NCH. Operas include Madam Butterfly and Hansel and Gretel.

Her film credits include Sw eeny Todd, The Miracle, Last o f the High Kings, The Money Go Round and In the Nam e o f Love. Television credits include The Late Late Toy Show, Open House, Billies Babies and a live studio interview for ID News.

STEPHEN FENNELLY - Lieutenant of the Tower Stephen Fennelly has been a full time member of the National Chamber Choir since 2002, touring to Brazil, China, Poland and the Czech Republic as well as giving regular concerts around Ireland. He was a member of CICD Choral Scholars from 1997-1999. He sings with a number of other choirs including the Fishamble Singers, taking part in their performance of the complete Bach cantatas and the Milltown Chamber Choir. He was a regular member of the Opera Ireland chorus from 2000-2003 performing in operas such as Aida, Lady Macbeth of Mtsenk, The Flying Dutchman, Silver Tassie, Carmen, Norma and Don Giovanni and with the Anna Livia Opera Festival chorus. He sang the small roles of Crebien in Puccini’s La Rondine and the Servant in Flotow’s Martha. He is the low bass in The Fourtune Cookies,' a barbershop quartet. Stephen played the role of Pirate King in the 2002 R&R production of The Pirates of Penzance. He is currently a pupil of Philip O’Reilly at the RIAM, having previously been taught by Paul Deegan and Colette MacGahan.

DEREK RYAN - Sergeant Meryll Derek entered the Leinster School of Music early in 1997, studying with Dr. Veronica Dunne and Ms. Jeannie Reddin. Since then he has appeared in many productions and concerts throughout Ireland. He played the dark and powerful character of Judd Fry in the R&R production of Oklahoma! at the Gaiety in 1999. He won the Bass Solo in the RDS Feis Cecil early in 2000.

He has had masterclasses with Sir Thomas Allen and Mr. Willard Whyte, two internationally acclaimed singers.

Derek has appeared with Lyric Opera in the productions of Fiddler on the Roof and Cavalleria Rusticana at the NCH. He has had successful appearances in Waterford and in the Irish Ring Opera. He was a co-producer of Six Voices, One Stage, One Might with his company HM Productions in February 2001 in the John Field Room.

NIGEL DCJGDALE - Leonard Meryll Nigel is a graduate of the Samuel Beckett Centre for Drama and Theatre Studies. He has performed as Butler with Bunratty and Knappogue Castle Banquets for three summer seasons as well as numerous musical theatre performances in his home town of Limerick. In Dublin he has performed with the Irish Master Tenors Show, Glasnevin Musical Society and as Cantor at the Pro Cathedral. This is his second R&R performance having recently played the role of a servant in My Fair Lady at the Gaiety Theatre.

ANN HOGAN - Dame

The Yeomen of the Guard Carruthers

Ann is a native of Birr in Co. Offaly. Siie is currently in her second year studying with Mary Brennan. She previously studied with Helen Hassett of Cork School of Music and with Deirdre Hanniffy in Birr.

Ann received an AIMS nomination for Best Singer for the role of Josephine in HMS Pinafore with Birr Stage Guild in 2001. She also played Katisha in their 2002 production of The Mikado. She won the Contralto Solo Competition in this year’s Feis Ceoil.

Ann was a member of the Opera Ireland chorus for their 2004 productions of Tosca and Jenufa. This is her first appearance with the Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society.

SUSAN WARD - Kate Susan Ward is in her second year in the RIAM where as a soprano she is studying singing with Irene Sandford and Kathleen Tynan for a B.A. in Music Performance. She will appear as ‘Fan Club Girl’ in the new Miramax film Ella Enchanted. She has performed as Nancy in Oliver, Adelaide in Guys and Dolls, Maria in The Sound of Music and Golde in Fiddler on the Roof Susan was a finalist in the 2fm Jacobs Song Writing Competition. She also won the Coca-Cola Movie Star competition. She appears in the film Wimbledon with Kirsten Dunst. Susan has been taking part in Feiseanna all over the country since the age of three and has a huge collection of first prizes and awards for classical singing, drama and dance.

She sings and plays lead guitar in her band ‘Lost and Sound’. The band won third place in the recent Shockwaves Band Competition. She has appeared several times on RTE’s Fair City. Susan played the part of Shona in Poga’s Wonderland and in December she will be playing the part of the Spirit in the RIAM production of Dido & Aeneas.

DENIS MOLLOY - First Yeoman Denis has studied with Prof. Paul Deegan. He has performed with Biessington and Naas Musical Societies in Oklahoma!, The Merry Widow, The Gypsy Baron and also as a soloist in several concerts.

EOIN SUPPLE - Sergeant Meryll Eoin Supple is currently studying voice with Colette MacGahon as part of the BA in Music Performance degree at the Royal Irish Academy of Music.

Previously he has studied with Prof. Paul Deegan. He won first prize in the Baritone Solo competition at the 2002 Siemens Feis Ceoil.

With Opera Ireland and Anna Livia Opera, Eoin has performed in Faust, Don Carlos, Jenufa and Tosca. His oratorio repertoire includes Faure’s Requiem, Schubert’s Mass in C, Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Requiem and Haydn’s Creation.

He is a keen choral singer and has appeared as a soloist on a number of occasions.

Eoin’s future engagements in the National Concert Hall include the bass solo in Mozart’s Mass in C minor in December and in April he will perform Finzi’s song cycle Let us garlands bring with the Royal Irish Academy of Music Chamber Orchestra.

R&R 2004 winter Season

Over Ninety Years of Musical Magic!

Introduction: It all started in 1913 at a meeting held in 48 Summerville Park, Rathmines Dublin. C. R Fitzgerald, who was the young organist at that time in Rathgar’s Church of the Three Patrons, wanted to establish a musical society whose membership would be formed from residents of the Dublin townships of Rathmines and Rathgar.

Original Objectives of the R&R: The objectives of the proposed musical society were the study of, and production of, operatic, choral and other high-class musical works. Notwithstanding the passing of the years and even into the 21st century, the society remains faithful to its original objective.

Operational Ethos of the R&R: While the production team, orchestra and technical crews - including lighting and set design - for each of the society’s productions is provided by experienced theatrical professionals, the chorus members and principal line­ up that appear on stage remains amateur. This ethos is guarded by the society’s voluntary Executive Committee that is made-up of representatives of all the elements of the society’s interest groups, associate members and corporate supporters.

T I.I, u 4 |v rN IU The first production - Gilbert & Sullivan’s Mikado 90U CC0 m t. 4. C was staged by the R&R in the Queen’s Theatre, Pearse L U. U^MK Street, Dublin in December 1913. The following year, also in December, the society performed for the first time in the Gaiety Theatre, Dublin with another Gilbert Copy o f poster for the 1913 show & Sullivan operetta Yeomen o f the Guard. As the society developed and membership expanded it was decided to complement the society’s Gilbert & Sullivan performances by including other musical comedy productions in its repertoire. In 1915 Planquette’s Les Cloches de Corneville was performed and this broadening of the society’s range of productions afforded its members many different opportunities to use their individual and combined range of musical talents and dramatic skills.

The Ongoing Contribution of the R&R to the Musical Theatre life of Dublin: The society has, since its establishment over 90 years ago, become a major contributor to the musical theatre life of Dublin city. The twice-yearly productions professionally presented in prestigious locations - including Ireland’s National Concert Hall - continue to attract maximum audiences.

The society offers associate membership to those friends who regularly support its musical productions. It also maintains close links with a host of individuals and organisations that have a keen continuous interest in the musical productions of the R&R.
