On behalf of the Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society it is my privilege and pleasure to welcome you to our beloved Gaiety Theatre.

Although the Society’s first production (The Mikado) took place in 1913 at the Q ueen’s Theatre - sadly now replaced with an office building - it was in the following year, 1914, that we cam e here to the Gaiety to present The Yeom en o f the Guard. We have been here each year since then (frequently twice a year) for the past 85 years and so the R & R is by far the longest serving theatrical com pany to appear at this theatre, a record of which we are justly proud.

O klahom a! is currently enjoying a m ost successful revival in the West End and so we decided it was timely for the R & R to present the Dublin revival of this Rodgers and Hamm erstein m asterpiece. O ur previous “O klahom as” were in 1957 and 1982.

Incidentally Oklahoma becam e the 46th state of the CISA in 1907, only six years before the R & R cam e into existence!

So now, get ready to m eet the farmers and the cowmen as they gather at Aunt Eller’s farmhouse in our 1999 production of O klahom a!

It is withi great sorrow that I recall the totally unexpected death in May of this year of our friend and collegue, Brendan Galvin. He meant so much to so many people in so many ways in the R & R that his loss will be felt for a very considerable time.

Brendan joined the chorus of the Society’s 1972 production o f F id d le r o n the Roof. His jovial manner, easy charm and sense of fun quickly won the hearts of us all. As a performing mem ber he had a strong baritone voice and was a fine player in secondary character parts.

Although he served on the Executive Committee and several sub-committees, it would be true to say that com m ittees would not have been his favourite avocation.

Brendan held a m ost important role on the Executive - that of Production Secretary. This role entailed working with theatrical professionals on m atters pertaining to our productions - scenic designs, lighting, amplification, obtaining of stage props and generally co-operating with the professional director of our shows. Brendan excelled in all these activities and carried out his duties with great flair and imagination yet always in a laid-back manner which belied the thoroughness of his dedication.

Brendan personified all that is best and worthwhile in the R & R. He was totally committed to the success of the Society and to the continuance of the highest standards for which we constantly strive. With his customary good hum our he possessed the useful knack of defusing a serious confrontation with a gentle quip.

Brendan was the perfect link between the Executive Committee and the performing m em bers and between new m em bers and the ‘old hands’.

We extend our deepest sympathy to his brothers, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

We miss Brendan greatly. May he rest in peace.

It is a radiant sum m er morning. Aunt Eller sits out on her farm, churning butter and looking over the horizon. Curly, a local ranch hand, com es to call with a serenade: Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’. Eller’s niece, Laurey, and Curly are smitten with one another, but both are too proud and stubborn to admit it. When Curly grandly offers to take Laurey to the Box Social that evening, she doubts that he can escort her in proper style (The Surrey w ith the Fringe on Top).

J u d Fry, the hired hand, lets it be known that he intends to ask Laurey to the dance, and she, intimidated by Jud, is too frightened to turn him down. Curly, hurt by Laurey’s apparent ambivalence, invites Aunt Eller to ride to the Box Social with him.

At the train station. Will Parker receives a hero’s welcome upon his return from Kansas City.

While there he won enough prize money at the rodeo - $50 - to earn the hand of Ado Annie, whose strict Pa, Andrew Carnes, said Will couldn’t marry his daughter without cash up front. But Will has a new problem; in his absence Annie has taken up with the exotic Persian peddler man, Ali Hakim. Annie confides to Laurey that she can ’t choose between Will and Ali (I Cain’t S a y Mo).

Towards the end of the day, folks begin to gather at Aunt Eller’s on their way to the Social, where Curly is set upon by a shrieking flirt, Gertie Cummings. The other girls gather around Laurey, buzzing with the news, but she airily tosses their concerns away (Many a N ew Day).

Meanwhile, even if Ado Annie can’t choose between Will and Ali Hakim, her father sees no such dilemma; as far as he’s concerned. All’s sweet talk to his daughter am ounts to nothing less than a proposal of marriage. In case Ali doesn’t get the m essage, Carnes delivers it with his shotgun. Ali is trapped. (It’s a Scandal! It’s an Outrage!)

Laurey and Curly remain tentative with each other, but they adm it that folks are beginning to talk (People Will S a y W e’re in Love). Curly questions Laurey about her plans to go with J u d to the Social but can’t seem to change her mind. Stung, Curly decides to visit J u d down at the sm okehouse where the hired hand lives.

Curly tries a novel approach with the unpopular Jud: people may not like you while you’re alive, he reasons, but think of how m uch they’ll weep for you when you’re dead! (Pore Jud is Daid). But the real purpose behind Curly’s visit is soon obvious: Laurey. Both men want her, and both men are ready to fight for her. After Curly departs, Ju d thinks it through Laurey is even worth killing for. Ju d is desperate for a woman, desperate to escape his Lonely Room.

Earlier, Laurey had let the Peddler Man sell her a vial of smelling salts that he claimed was nothing less than the “Elixir of Egypt”, a potion to help clarify her thoughts. Now, fraught by her feelings for Curly and her fear of Jud, Laurey gives the Bixir a try (Out o f My Dreams).

In a swirl of dream images (Ballet), Laurey sees herself marrying Curly. Ju d invades the wedding; he carries her off, thwarts Curiy’s attem pts to rescue her, and, after a horrific struggle, kills Curly. Laurey awakes from her nightmare with a start . . . and finds J u d offering his arm, ready to escort her to the Box Social.

ACT TWO Despite plenty of division between farmers and cowmen, the community has com e together to raise money for a new schoolhouse. High-spirited and competitive, the different factions m eet that night at the Box Social where they m anage to dance a little and fight a lot (The Farmer and The Cowman). Funding for the schoolhouse is earned by bids placed on each of the picnic ham pers prepared by the farm girls. As the auction begins, under the stern eye and sturdy gavel of Aunt Eller, Ali Hakim has a transaction of his own to see through. In order to manoeuvre his way out of marrying Ado Annie, Ali contrives to pay $50 for all the gifts Will bought in Kansas City. With cash in hand. Will can once again claim Ado Annie for himself.

The crowd is ready to bid on the final two ham pers - Ado Annie’s, and Laurey’s. Will trum ps everyone by bidding his $50 on Annie’s hamper; Carnes mocks him because, with the money now going towards the schoolhouse. Will is broke once more. Ali, who really wants to stay a bachelor, swallows hard and outbids Will by $ 1. Ali gets Annie’s hamper, but Will gets Annie.

O ne picnic basket is left: Laurey’s. Curly and Ju d outlast the other bidders and now they are clearly determined to outlast each other. It’s a showdown, and as their bids climb higher and higher it isn’t about Laurey’s ham per anymore; it’s about Laurey herself. Each m an gives up every penny he has; Curly even sells his saddle, his horse, and his gun. In the end Curly outbids Jud, though the tension between the two m en isn’t resolved.

Will Parker gets Ado Annie alone. Now that he has earned her hand, he reasons, he gets to lay down the law. His rules on matrimony are very clear: It’s All Er N othin’. Annie will play by his rules - her way.

As the two lovebirds chase each other off, a more troubled duo approaches: J u d Fry with Laurey, whom he has m anaged to steer away from the party. Face to face, J u d tries to tell Laurey what she means to him. When his clumsy attem pts fail, he turns to threats.

Angrily, Laurey sum m ons her courage and fires Jud, warning him never to set foot on her property again. But once alone, she breaks down, calling tearfully for Curly. He com es along and consoles her; terror turns to relief and joy, as the two lovers finally admit what everyone has long known (People Will S a y W e’re in Love; reprise).

Several weeks later, a wedding supper is in progress at Aunt Eller’s. Curly and Laurey “couldn’t pick a better time to start in life”, Eller declares, since the Indian Territory is about to join the Union as a brand-new state, Oklahoma. Matrimony is in the air: Will and Annie are hitched, and even Ali Hakim has been snared - by Gertie Cummings, who plans to rein in her husband’s days on the open road.

As the wedding night unfolds, the menfolk engage Curly and Laurey in a raucous, if harmless, local tradition called a “Shivoree”. But good fun turns deadly serious when an unwanted guest, Ju d Fry, stumbles onto the scene. Drunk and angry, he becom es dangerous as he takes on Curly, switchblade in hand. Their fight, implied at the sm okehouse, and conjured in Laurey’s dream, now becom es reality. A parry, a fall, and J u d collapses on his own knife. A short time later, he is dead. Curly is arrested, and charged with Ju d Fry’s murder.

Out of necessity, a frontier community is often required to m ake its own laws, set its own term s of justice. No one wants Curly to spend his wedding night in jail, and so an im promptu trial is held at Aunt Eller’s farm. Curly is acquitted on the grounds of selfdefence. The prisoner is free to com m ence his honeymoon.

The sun begins to rise on another radiant morning. Curly and Laurey ride off to start their new life together, serenaded by friends, family and neighbours (Finale Ultimo).

NOEL McD o n o u g h Noel’s credits include the Mernj Widow, Die Fledermaus and Give m y Regards, with the Glasnevin Musical Society in the National Concert Hall. He has been very successful in the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera, winning the Best Director Awards for his production of Macic and Mabel (Sandynnount Musical Society), Chicago, Cabaret, Barnum and in 1998 Crazy for You. He specialises in premieres, and with Arthur’s Team he directed LiVAbner, Dames at Sea, N ew Pirates o f Penzance, On Your Toes, 42nd Street, Guys and Dolls and Singin’ in the Rain. Also to his credit are the Irish premieres of A Slice o f Saturday Night, Last o f the Red Hot Lovers in Andrew’s Lane, and Rebecca Storm’s Hollywood Ladies at the Tivoli.

In 1996 Noel directed/devised Different Dreams on television for RTE and staged The Last Night o f the Proms and the Viennese Night for the Bank of Ireland Proms in the RDS. In December 1996, Noel directed the Irish premiere of Stephen Sondheim’s Assass/ns in the Samuel Beckett Centre.

His recent credits include Frank McGijinness’s Som eone W ho’ll Watch Over Me, wodd premiere of Brian O’Reilly’s Buskin’, Cinderella at the Gaiety, Me and My Girl at the Olympia/Cork Opera House and the award winning Chess for ESB/MADSOC at the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera.

Noel graduated in 1997 from Trinity College with BA (Mod.) Honours Degree in Drama and Theatre Studies. After last year’s Fiddler on the Roof Noel welcomes the opportunity to work with the R & R again.

Once again he has enjoyed working with a talented production team and cast, and a very supportive committee, in bringing this vibrant Oklahonia! to fruition.

GEAROID GRANT Gearoid studied music with the late Dr. J. O’Reilly in the College of Music and graduated with a B.Mus. from CICD. Subsequently, he studied conducting with, among others, George Hurst in London. Since then he has worked as conductor, music director and arranger for most Irish theatrical companies in works ranging from Mozart to Sondheim.

At present, he is resident conductor with the R & R. Gearoid has appeared as guest conductor with the Irish Chamber Orchestra, Our Lady’s Choral Society, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland and the RTE Concert Orchestra.

JACKIE CURRAN OLOHAN Daughter of Josephine Scanlon and Chris Curran, Jackie has distinguished herself as a performer, musician, music director and chorus master. Her musical education thrived under Sr. Agnes Cecilia at St. Mary's College, Arklow, the College of Music and CICD. She has been Music Director for many show premieres including Zorba, The Hired Man, Most H appy Fella, Anything Goes, Into the Woods, La Cage aux Folles and A Chorus Line. She was awarded Best Music Director at the 1992 Waterford International Festival of Light Opera for her work on Sondheim ’s Into the Woods and this, with conducting her father in the production of Annie at the Olympia, she regards as her highlights to date.

Jackie has m ade many solo appearances in the NCH and works regularly on television and radio. With husband Sean, she sings as part of the group Avoca and works as a backing vocalist on the session scene. She teaches music at Our Lady’s School in Rathnew.

RITA KEALY Dublin-born Rita originally trained and danced with the famous choreographer Alice Dalgarno. As a professional dancer she appeared in all of Dublin’s major theatres, in a variety of shows.

She has worked in films and television, including many RTE light entertainment shows.

Turning to choreography, Rita has worked with countless musical societies throughout the country. Recognition has come in the form of many endorsements including ‘Best Choreographer’ at the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera on four separate occasions and also similar awards from AIMS. Rita has choreographed several national finalists in the popular J o h n Player T o p s of the Town’ competition. Most recently she has choreographed many shows and concerts for the Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society and the Glasnevin Musical Society at the Gaiety and National Concert Hall, together with the ‘Bank of Ireland Prom s’ for RTE. Her work has also been seen on the stages of the Grand Opera House, Belfast and several seasons with the lORC at the Cork Opera House. She recently choreographed the very successful Me an d M y Girl for the lORC at the Olympia Theatre. Admired for the vitality and dedication of her work, Rita has also given workshops to a variety of groups countrywide.

Rita is delighted to be back with the R & R for their 1999 production of Oklahoma! and would like to acknowledge the very special contribution of Marina in choreographing this show.

JOHN O’DONOGHUE A graduate of the National College of Art & Design, Jo h n has worked on more than sixty productions as designer or scenic artist.

Recent design credits include Buskin’ at the Tivoli Theatre and Cork Opera House, Return to the Forbidden Planet at Andrew’s Lane and Tivoli Theatres, Assassins at the Samuel Beckett Theatre and Fiddler on the Roof at the Gaiety Theatre. Other design credits include Chess, Chicago, S ingin ’ in the Rain, Anything Goes, Guys an d Dolls, Oklahoma!, Oliver, Grease, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, H ow to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, The Pajama Game and the plays Canaries and War. ELAINE HEARTY Elaine has recently graduated from a three-year course in Speech and Drama Studies with the Dublin Institute of Technology. In 1998 she won the 2FM Jacob’s Song Contest with one of her own compositions and appeared on various radio and television programmes. At present she is working with other writers, with a view to developing her style and performance. Her aim is to become a professional recording artist.

Last year was Elaine’s first year with the R & R where she played the role of Chava in Fiddler on the Roof. She is delighted to be a part of this year’s production.

LISA KELLY This is Lisa’s second show vinth the R & R. She played Hodel in last year’s production of Fiddler on the Roof and was also a joint winner of the R & R Robert McCullagh Bursary last year.

Lisa has just finished a run of Chess with the ESB Musical Society, in which she played the role of Florence Vassy.

Previously a member of Stillorgan Musical Society, Lisa played Valma Kelly in their production of Chicago which won Best Show in the Northern Ireland Festival of Light Opera.

Lisa has also played the parts of Frenchie in Grease, Gilmer in Godspell, and Sarah Brown in Guys and Dolls. Lisa studies singing with Kathryn Smith in the Leinster School of Music and over the last few years has been a soloist at various lunchtime recitals in the National Concert Hall. Lisa’s next role is as Jill in the Gaiety’s Christmas Pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk.

SUE MACHESNEY Sue is currently studying singing with Evelyn Dowling. She has taken part in all the R & R productions since she joined the Society six years ago.

She is delighted to be playing the part of Gertie Cummins in this year’s production of Oklahoma!

Previous performances include Maria in West Side Story at the NCH and Rosalinde in As You Like It.

JOHN McCALL John is a twenty-year-old BA student reading Marketing with French and German at Dublin City University where he is a keen member of the Contemporary Players’ and Singers’ Society. He is no stranger to musical theatre having played many roles with the R & R and the Musical Youth Theatre of W icklow in various productions including Kurt von Trapp in The Sound o f Music, Zebulun in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Fyedka and Tevye in Fiddler on the R oof and recently Roger in Grease.

He appeared at the National Concert Hall with the R & R during their Spring season production of Romberg to Rodgers. This is John’s second season at the Gaiety with the R & R.

ARTHUR McGAURAN A rthur has been involved in over seventy m usical productions since he started at the tender age of 17. In that tim e he was nominated for four AIMS Awards culm inating in the Best Supporting Actor Award for Jud Fry in Oklahom a!

His successes on stage include such parts as Jupiter in Orpheus in the Underworld, the King in The King and I, Joe in Show B oat and Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, which is his favourite part.

He has competed in four international festivals of light opera and has been the recipient of the Gold Medal for Bass Solo in the Feis Maitiu.

In the last few years he has directed a number of musicals and was a founder member of the Celbridge Musical Society. Arthur played the part of Captain George Brackett in the R & R production of South Pacific in 1996. He performed in Show Business in the National Concert Hall and was Captain Andy in the R & R production of Show Boat in 1998. He played Jud Fry the last tim e the R & R did Oklahoma!.

RICHARD MORE O’FERRALL Richard began both acting and singing while in secondary school, playing a number of main characters in school musicals. He played Herbert in Great Expectations in the Waterford Light Opera Festival this year.

GARRY MONTAINE As a baritone Garry lias appeared in Dublin and around the country, playing major roles as diverse as ‘Finch’ in H ow to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying to Tevye’ in Fiddler on the Roof.

Born in Dublin, he became a member o f the popular Young Peoples Theatre Group and has appeared in their productions to date including Plaza Suite (Jessie Kipplinger) and Nicholas N ic k d b y (Lord Hawke and other roles).

He has won many awards for his work as an actor and singer. He studied with Dr. Veronica Dunne at The Leinster School of Music and Professor Paul Deegan at the RIAM. He appeared in the Opera Theatre Company’s production of M ahogany Songspiel for the Dublin Theatre Festival and Sceanario’s production o f In Com pany w ith Sondheim staged at the National Concert Hall.

He appeared with D’Oyly Carte Opera Company, playing ‘Poo-Bah’ and ‘Wilfred Shadbolt’ in their productions of The M ikado and the Yeomen o f the Guard (which has been recorded for TER/EMI), at Sadlers Wells, London and the Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham.

Television and radio include The Late Late Show, Live at 3, Theatre Nights all for RTE, ‘Shadbolt’ in Yeomen o f the Guard and ‘Pooh-Bah’ in The M ikado for BBC Television.

Garry’s m ost recent productions include ‘Ramades’ in the Risen People at the Gaiety Theatre, ‘Henry Higgins’ in M y Fair Lady at the Gaiety Theatre, ‘Joe Keller’ in A ll m y Sons at the Andrew Lane Theatre, ‘Emile’ in South Pacific at the Gaiety Theatre, ‘Sam Byck’ in Assassins at the Beckett Theatre, ‘Khruschev’ in JFK at the Olympia Theatre and ‘Dancairo’ in Carmen at NCH, and he completed a twelve week run playing ‘The Man’ in B uskin’ at the Tivoli Theatre and the Opera House, Cork.

Garry played the part of Tevye in Fiddler on the R oof last year.

Margaret was involved with theatre even before she left school, appearing in Under M ilk Wood at the Gate and The Crucible at the Olympia, both directed by Barry Cassin.

She was associated with Strand Players for many years as actor and director. Her production of / Do Not Like Thee Dr. Fell won the All-Ireland Drama Festival 1981 in Athlone.

Other plays she directed for Strand include The Sea, Separate Tables and The Country Boy. She appeared in The Country B oy when Barry Cassin directed it at RHK in 1989. She served on the Board of the Abbey Theatre from 1978 to 1982.

Though she produced a number of musicals, including S how Boat, West Side Story and L ittle M ay Sunshine - which won the premier award at the Bangor Music Festival - this is only her second appearance in a musical. She won the Best Supporting Actress Award at the Waterford Light Opera Festival when she played Mama Morton in Chicago for Arthur’s Team - directed by Noel McDonough.

KILLIAN O’DOWD Killian comes to the Society w ith a varied musical background. He played Lt. Cable in South Pacific and featured in such shows as Oklahoma!, Brigadoon, Fiddler on the R oof and the Wesley Burrows’ musical Carrie, where he played the leading role o f Heloise.

He has also taken part in the Gay Byrne Gala Concerts and the Bank o f Ireland RTE Proms. His most recent appearance with the Society was in S how Boat where he played the role o f Steve Baker.

KENNETH O'REGAN Kenneth has recently moved to Dublin from Cork where he trained in the Cork Academy of Dramatic Art with Catherine M ahon-Buckley. He recently appeared in the ESB/ MADSOC’s production of Chess, in which he played Anatoly.

He played the part o f Curly earlier this year in the Coolmine Musical Society production of Oklahoma!. Other credits include Me and M y Girl (Olympia, Cork Opera House), The Yeomen o f the Guard, Joseph and the A m azing Technicolor Dreamcoat and The Merry W idow (Palace Theatre, Cork) and H.M.S. Pinafore, La Traviata and Carmen (Cork Opera House).

LUKE O’REILLY This is Luke’s first se a so n with the R & R. He is delighted to b e appearing in this production of O klahoma!, playing the p art of Slim.

DEREK RYAN Derek joined the R & R last year for Fiddler on the Roof, and since th en he has b een very active in all their productions.
