Showboat is not just another American musical. First presented in 1927, it is the First great contemporary modern musical. The First to merge the traditional, happy-go-lucl<y naivete of Broadway musical comedy with serious themes. The first with a score ranging from light-hearted, popular thirty-two bar songs to nineteenth century operetta and grand opera. Undeniably, it is Jerome Kern’s Porgy and Bess.

Edna Ferber’s novel Showboat first appeared in 1926, in serial form in the Woman's Home Companion. Its sprawling, romantic story immediately attracted the attention of song-writer Jerom e Kern, who thought it perfect material for a musical.

At first, Ferber believed the idea of adapting Showboat to the musical stage was preposterous. The story sprawled over a fifty-year time span; it dealt with miscegenation, alcoholism, and a wife’s desertion by her ne’er-do-well gambling husband. The usual 1920s musical was invariably light-hearted farce about comic events at a college, country club, or Long Island estate. The most serious issues generally dealt with how a humble chorus girl might become a star in the Follies, or how sweethearts from differing social stations could be united.

Kern enlisted the talents of librettist Oscar Hammerstein 11 and producer Florenz Ziegfeld.

Charles Winninger (who played Cap’n Andy) made a welcoming speech to the audience, explaining that every scene that had been rehearsed was going to be performed that evening, and that cuts would be made in accordance with the audience’s response. On that legendary opening night, the curtain rose at 8.30 p.m. and finally rang down at 12.40 in the morning. Despite the evident need for pruning, critics and public alike were bedazzled by the score and the immense scope encompassed in the drama.

The history of the American Musical Theatre is divided into two eras: everything before Showboat and everything after Showboat. This seminal work revealed that a Broadway musical was free to embrace any kind of theme, however controversial. It could deal with serious issues in a suitably mature fashion, and could counterpoint light and cheerful scenes with those of human anguish. And yet it need never sacrifice popularity or a memorable tuneful score.

JACKIE CURRAN OLOHAN Daughter of Josephine Scanlon and Chris Curran, Jackie has distinguished herself as a performer, musician, music director and chorus master. Her musical education thrived under Sr. Agnes Cecilia at St. Mary’s College, Arklow, the College of Music and (JCD. She has been Music Director for many show premieres including Zorba, The Hired Man, Most Happy Fella, Anything Goes, Into the Woods, La Cage aux Folles and A Chorus Line. She has been awarded Best Music Director at the 1992 Waterford International Festival of Light Opera for her work on Sondheim’s Into the Woods and this, with conducting her father in the production of Annie at the Olympia she regards as her highlights to date.

Jackie has made many solo appearances in the NCH and works regularly on television and radio. With husband Sean, she sings as part of the group Avocaand works as a backing vocalist on the session scene. She teaches music at Our Lady’s School in Rathnew.

ROLAND DAVITT Roland Davitt is a third year student on the B.Mus. performance course, studying singing with Mary Brennan and Alison Young.

He has won several prizes including the male voice repertoire competition and prize for most promising singer in the Ballymena Festival, the baritone solo and the O ’Mara Cup for operatic aria in the Dublin Feis Ceoil 1997.

Roland sang the baritone solo in Faure’s Requiem with the Setanta Choir and the Ulster Orchestra in Dundalk and with the Ulysses Choir in the Peppercanister Church. As a member of the Conservatory he has sung many leading bass roles in the National Concert Hall including Balthazzar in Menotti’s Am ahl and the Night Visitors, Sarastro in excerpts from The M agic Flute and most recently he sang the leading male role with conductor Franz-Paul Decker in the Schubert opera Der Hausliche Krieg.

STEPHANIE ELLIOTT Stephanie was born in Dublin and trained with the Irish National Ballet. She has performed in all the major theatres in Dublin, and has worked in London’s West End and in Las Vegas. She also appeared on numerous RTE and BBC productions. In 1988 she formed her own dance group, which appeared on Sunday Night Live at the Gaiety. She has been involved in the production of Foster and Allen videos, and the Crown Paint commercials. Stephanie has choreographed three Gaiety Theatre pantos, and the Gate Theatre’s production of Jane Eyre. Much of her work is with RTE and includes the Sandy Kelly series. M ake Mine Music, O ff the Record series, Daniel O ’D onnell Specials, Upwardly Mobile, and The Proms. Most recently she has worked on The Music o f Andrew Lloyd Webber at the Mational Concert Hail. This is Stephanie’s first engagement with the R&R and she is delighted to be a part of the production team.

Siobhan is from Wexford and moved to Greystones where she becam e involved with the Greystones Operatic & Dramatic Society. She has played a lot of leading roles with them including Katisha in The Mikado and Eliza in My Fair Lady.

She has worked most recently with Kevin Hough’s Theatre Nights concerts, both on The Late Late Show and in the Rose o f Tralee Festival. She has appeared as soloist in the most recent AIMS concerts.

Siobhan has also worked with Kiimacud and DAYMS. She played the part of Ruth in The Pirates o f Penzance, and played the part of the Duchess of Plaza-Toro in The Gondoliers with the R&R in their production in the National Concert Hall in 1996.

In April this year Siobhan played the part of Florence in Chess with Wexford Light Opera Society and was then awarded ‘Best Female Singer’ and ‘Best Overall Performer’ for her performance by AIMS. Siobhan is delighted to join the R&R again to play this wonderful role.

NIAMH FLANAGAN Niamh trained at thie Billie Barry Stage School and has nnuch professional experience to her credit in theatre, cabaret, television and radio productions throughout Ireland.

She is no stranger to the Gaiety stage, as her first performance was in the pantomime Mother Goose which starred Maureen Potter in 1981.

Following regular appearances in the theatre’s Christmas pantomimes, Niamh played the part of Dainty June in the musical production of Gypsy during the summer of 1986.

Travel abroad and studies interrupted her stage career until joining the Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society at the beginning of this year. She appeared as a member of the chorus in the society’s production of Show Business at the Mational Concert Hall last May.

FRANCESCO FUSCO Francesco got the acting bug ten years ago when he first performed in Clane Musical Society’s Show boat, directed by Mona Conroy (an ex-member of the R&R).

Since then he has performed in Clane’s Seven Brides for Seven Brothers as the youngest brother, and also in Half A Sixpence and Calamity Jane. He has also performed in the Naas Moat Club’s pantomines Beauty and the Beast, Snow White and last year’s show Robin Hood, where Francesco played the title role.

In 1996 the Naas Musical Society was formed and their first show was My Fair Lady and Francesco played the part of the somewhat eccentric Prince Zoltan Karpathy.

This year Naas put on Showboat, once again directed by Mona Conroy, and Francesco played Frank Schultz.

As well as acting, Francesco is an ex-champion in ballroom and Latin-American dancing and is part of the Geraldine Folk Group and has performed abroad for many years.

At the moment Francesco is a part of the Mona Conroy Singers in her on-going show Showstoppers 5.

GEAROID GRANT Gearoid studied music with the late Dr. J. O â&#x20AC;&#x2122;Reilly in the College of Music and graduated with a B.Mus. from (JCD. Subsequently, he studied conducting with, among others, George Hurst in London. Since then he has worked as conductor, music director and arranger for m ost Irish theatrical companies in works ranging from Mozart to Sondheim.

At present, he is resident conductor with the R & R. Gearoid has appeared as guest conductor with the Irish Chamber Orchestra, Our Ladyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Choral Society, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland and the RTE Concert Orchestra.

PATRICIA HOUGH Patricia has played a variety of leading roles in over 25 shows with several musical societies. These have been as diverse as Ado Annie in Oklahoma!, Polly in The Boyfriend, Tzeitel in Fiddler on the Roof, and Phyllis in lolanthe.

She received the Best Female Performance Award for her portrayal of the title role in Love from Judy at the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera. In the same year she was awarded Best Female Principal by the Association of Irish Musical Societies. W ith St. Louis Musical Society she was leading lady in their three awardwinning productions; The Golden Years, The Boyfriend and Love from Judy.

She has also played female lead in Anne o f Green Gables and in The King and /.

SANDRA KELLY Sandra was born in Dublin and studies singing with Mary Brennan and Alison Young at the College of Music, Dublin. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s winner of the Gold Medal for singing at the College, Sandra has also won several prizes at the Dublin Feis Ceoii, including the Dermot Troy Trophy for oratorio, the Ford-Taylor Prize for Gilbert & Sullivan and the Rathmines & Rathgar Cup. She has performed with many musical societies around the country playing roles as diverse as Adele in Die Fledermaus to Sarah Brown in Guys & Dolls. Sandra performs regularly in cabaret, concerts and oratorio and was the soprano soloist at the re-opening of the National Gallery, Dublin. She has also performed at the Bank of Ireland Arts Centre.

Radio work includes playing the role of Laurey in the Gay Byrne S h ow production of Oklahoma! Sandra has also performed operatic roles in the National Concert Hall. These roles include the Queen of the Night and Gretel in excerpts from The Magic Flute and Hansel & Gretel.

ARTHUR McGAURAN Arthur has b een involved in over seventy musical productions since he started at the tender age of 17. In that time he was nominated for four AIMS Awards culminating in the Best Supporting Actor Award for Ju d Fry in Oklahoma!

His successes on stage include such parts as Jupiter in Orpheus in the Underworld, the King in The King and I, Jo e in S h ow B oat and Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, which is his favourite part.

He has com peted in four international festivals of light opera and has been the recipient of the Gold Medal for Bass Solo in the Feis Maitiu.

In the last few years he has directed a number of musicals and was a founder m em ber of the Ceibridge Musical Society. Arthur played the part of Captain George Brackett in the R & R production of South Pacific in 1996 and performed in Show Business in the National Concert Hall earlier this year.

FIONA MURPHY Fiona is a twenty year old B.A. student, reading Music and English at UCD. She is currently studying voice production with Irene Thompson and Jeannie Reddin. She has performed on numerous occasions at the National Concert Hall as a soloist, and has won several prizes in Feiseanna around the country. In 1995 Fiona won the Olive Watson Young Singer award in Belfast.

Later this year, Fiona will be making her debutante recital at the Bank of Ireland Arts Centre. This is Fiona's first time appearing with the Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society and she is delighted to be playing the role of Julie La Verne.

CIARAn J . NAGLE Dublin-born Ciaran has been a student of the DIT College of Music from 1990 until 1997, studying with Edith Forrest FTCL and Alison Young. He also has had coaching with Mark Shanahan and Brian MacKay. This summer he attended the Philodi singing school in Hereford and was coached by some of the leading teachers in England.

He has sung many leading tenor roles in college productions including: The Rakes Progress, Don Giovanni, The Bartered Bride, The Magic Flute, West Side Story and Miss Saigon.

Ciaran has sung with many musical companies throughout the country playing lead roles in shows such as HMS Pinafore, The Merry Widow, Show boat and A Little Night Music. He has also sung with several opera companies country-wide. Roles include Edguardo (Lucia Di Lammermoor), El Remendado (Carmen), Aeneas (Dido & Aeneas), 1st Sailor (Dido & Aeneas), Guiseppe (La Trauiata).

He has been a member of the Opera Ireland Chorus for the past four seasons in productions of The Marriage o f Figaro, Macbeth, L ’Elisir d ’a more. La Boheme, Tosca, The Magic Flute, Faust and La Cenerentola. He is also a member of the National Chamber Choir.

Ciaran will join the Opera Ireland Chorus once again in December for their ’97 winter season in the Gaiety. In January he will be singing in Carnegie Hail as part of the Robert Shaw Choral Workshops.

ANDREW WICKES Andrew Wickes comes from London, and divides ills time between directing, acting and writing. in recent years, he has been associated with the Dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Oyly Carte Opera Company, directing HMS Pinafore, Trial B y Jury, lolanthe, Gilbert & Sullivan A La Carte, The Mikado (televised on BBC2) and The Yeomen o f the Guard. He has also worked with the Royal Opera House, Welsh National Opera, Kent Opera, Scottish Opera, and in particular with Opera North, for whom he has directed Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni and Tosca.

Productions elsewhere include Aida (Newcastle), II Tabarro and Gianni Schicchi (Leeds), Cosl fan tutte (Birmingham), Faust and II Barbiere di Siuiglia (London), Curlew River (Cambridge), Jeans and Giovanni (BBC2 TV opera workshop), and a Haydschumanniade with Sir Peter Pears (Snape); he was the Associate Director on the 1988 York Mystery Plays, and on the 1989 Earls Court Carmen, which he subsequently revived in Tokyo. He has also directed a number of plays, including A Tale o f Two Cities and The History o f Tom Jones (Sheffield), The Tyrant (London) and Exit Pursued B y A Bear (Edinburgh).

He has appeared as an actor all over Britain and in the West End of London: roles include Narrator in The Soldierâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tale, Samiel in Der Freischiltz, Orsini-Rosenberg in Am adeus, Salieri in Mozart and Salieri, Bartolo in The Marriage o f Figaro, The Ghost of Christmas Present in A Christmas Carol, Manuel Estrada in Lady Be Good!, Walter Furst in William Tell, The Friend in A Respectable Wedding, Kunz in A Patriot for Me, and both Chauvelin and Lambert in The Scarlet Pimpernel.

His writing includes translations of Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme/tAoWhTe and Don Giovanni/Gazzaniga, and stage adaptations of The Oz Trial, Shakespeare Follies, A Christmas CaroZ/Dickens, The York Mystery Plays, A Tale o f Two Qiies/Dickens and The History o f Tom Jones/Fielding.

Earlier this year, Andrew directed Sem ele at Colchester, and Me and M y Girl at Athlone: he continues to teach acting and stagecraft in London, at Trinity College of Music and the National Opera Studio. Having directed the R&R productions of My Fair Lady (1995) and South Pacific (1996), he is delighted to have been asked back for S h o w b o a t Future plans include Crazy for You at Athlone.
