Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society So, we are back again in the Gaiety to present Fair Lady, in fact we have not been here since you saw A nything Goes in November 1992. How time flies.

Permit me to look back a little. Our first venture as a musical society was in 1913, The Mikado in the old Queen’s Theatre, now alas gone, thence quickly over to the Gaiety.

For a while we stayed with Gilbert & Sullivan, but gaining courage and audi­ ences we moved into musical comedy. There must be few among us who might have seen The Geisha (1928), A Country Giri (1930), The Quaker Girl and Monsieur Beaucaire, (both 1932), but are we not occasionally pleasantly surprised to hear some of the songs from those 1mentioned.

Many of you may have taken part in our shows and rehearsed in various rooms, one of these could have been the old national school in Rathmines. We had rented this and finally purchased it in 1972. We now have a home of which we are justly proud, a tangible heritage to pass on to future members of the Soci­ ety. In this are centred our social activities, entertaining our associate members to evenings of music and also the public to recitals by our principal artists.

Can any of us doubt that we will hold our place in the heart of musical Dublin and continue to brighten the evenings for all of you as we have done in the past eighty-two years.

GRACE BROPHY This is Grace’s third visit to the Gaiety Theatre vi^ith the R & R, having played in Gigi and S ho w Boat. She is a long-time mem ber of the Sundrive Players, four times winners of the Premier Esso Trophy at the All-Ireland Theatre Festival. They have also guested in the Dundalk International Festival, the Opera House, Belfast, Questors Theatre, London and the Opera House, Monaco.

Grace has won Best Actress All-Ireland Award twice, (JTV Award at the Opera House, Belfast and awards at numerous festivals including the International at Dundalk.

Favourite roles include Filumena in Eduardo de Filipo’s play ofthe same name, Kate in Arthur M iller’s A ll M y Sons, Bessie Burgess in Sean O ’Casey’s The Plough a nd the Stars, Anna Sevyenovna In Brian Frlel’s M onth in the C ountry and Lady in Tenessee W illiam s’ Orpheus Descending.

PATRICK CAMPBELL Pat Campbell has been a perform ing member of the R & R for half a century having joined the Society in 1945. He was a m em ber of the chorus for the first twenty-five years and it was his playing o f KoKo in the 1971 production of The M ikado that comm enced his career as a lead player.

Since then he has perform ed all the com ic roles in the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, together with character parts in a variety of musicals. He is well-known as a compere of concerts and social events.

Pat has served for many years on various R & R committees and was General Secretary o f the Society from 1974-1986.

In 1988 he was a recipient o f a M illennium Award presented by the Lord Mayor of Dublin for “outstanding achievement in light m usic” .

He plays Colonel Pickering in this production of M y F air Lady.

JACKIE CGRRAN-OLOHAN Jackie’s musical education thrived at three diverse locations, St. Mary’s College, Arklow, the College of Music and (JCD. She has been Music Director for several Irish show premieres with DAYMS including Zorba, The Hired Man, Most Happy Fella, A n y th in g Goes, Into the Woods and La Cage aux Folles. Jackie has worked many times with DAYMS and with several other musical societies including Wicklow, Greystones, Dolmen, Bank of Ireland and Playback.

She is an accomplished perform er in her own right, appearing regularly on radio and television with her husband Sean in their group Avoca. Jackie has made many solo appearances in the National Concert Hall and works regularly as a backing vocalist with RTE and on the session scene.

She teaches music in Our Lady’s School, Rathnew. She was awarded Best Music Director at the 1992 WIFLO for DAYMS production of Into the Woods and this, along with conducting her dad, Chris Curran in last year’s production of A nn ie at the Olympia, she regards as her highlights to date. W ith a busy schedule of work and family, Jackie still manages to fit in her daily swim in W icklow Harbour! Her next venture will be as Music Director for The King and I at the Olympia Theatre.

GEAROID GRANT Gearoid studied m usic with the late Dr. J. O ’Reilly in the College of Music and graduated with a B.Mus. from GCD. Subsequently, he studied conducting with, among others, George Hurst in London. Since then he has worked as conductor, music director and arranger for most Irish theatrical companies in works ranging from Mozart to Sondheim.

At present, he is resident conductor with the R & R. Gearoid has appeared as guest conductor with the Irish Chamber Orchestra, O ur Lady’s Choral Society, the National Symphony Orchestra and the RTE Concert Orchestra.

GRSGLA HOGGH Ursula’s first part with the Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society was Tessa in The Gondoliers when she was eighteen and she is not saying what year that was .. .

However, since then she has played Mrs. Partlet in The Sorcerer, Margo in The M erry W idow, Olga in a subse­ quent M erry W idow, Meg Brockie in Brigadoon, Kate in The Pirates o f Penzance, and with St. Louis Past Pupils Musical Society, Madame D ubonnet in The B oy F riend for w hich she was awarded The A djudicator’s Special Award at the W aterford International Festival of Light Opera. She won the Best Supporting Actress Award the follow ing year for Mrs. Arm itage-M oore in The Golden Years.

Ursula’s last appearance with the R & R was three years ago when she played Inez in The Gondoliers at the Gaiety.

RITA KEALY Rita was born in Dublin and trained and danced witli the famous choreographer Alice Dalgarno. She has choreographed for many musical societies throughout the country and this is her sixth season to work with the R & R. Rita has also worked in films and television including the RTE Proms. She has won many awards for her work including Best Choreographer at the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera on four separate occasions. She has also been awarded Best Choreographer with A.I.M.S. Rita choreographed the Irish Distillers Tops o f the Tow n which won the National Final on RTE.

PAUL KELLY Paul Kelly studies with Dr. Veronica Dunne at the College of Music, Dublin and has won many prizes for his singing including the John McCormack Cup at the Feis Ceoil. Paul has sung roles in operas by Handel, Mozart, Sm etena and Poulenc and has many roles to his credit in light opera. Equally at hom e on the concert platform, he has given several song and lieder recitals and has regularly featured in performances of oratorio.

He is well known to Dulbin audiences for his appearances with the Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society for whom he has sung Col. Fairfax, Nanki Poo and Frederick in the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire as well as appearing in several of its concerts at the National Concert Hall.

ADAM LAWLOR Adam has a long and distinguished career in theatre encom passing opera, oratorio, rock operas and musicals.

Personal favourites include the roles of Dr Bartolo in The Marriage o f Figaro, Mimico in Zorba (WIFLO Award), Caiphas in J e su s Christ Superstar, Tevye in Fiddler on. the R o o f and Eddie in the hugely successful Slice o f Saturday Night.

Adam spent m any years studying voice in the RlAAVCollege of Music, piano with Kathleen Louden LRCM, and dram a with the Brendan Smith Academy. When not performing he has acted as chorus m aster and rehearsal pianist with many societies, and has also coached young singers for auditions, helping them to broaden their repertoire.

He is delighted to play a very different role, that of Zoltan Karpathy (at certain performances) in a musical he enjoys very much.

Adam has won the award for Best Supporting Actor both in AIMS '95 and the Waterford International Festival. His next perform ances are as a soloist in the AIMS Concert at the new Limerick Concert Hall. He is also director o f S o u th Pacific with the Kilmacud Musical Society for spring '96.

NOEL MAGEE Noel Magee was born in Derry and comes from a theatrical background being the son of the Irish recording artist Charlie McGee. He is one of the long-standing members of the R & R having joined the Society in September 1961.

Over the years he has taken part in most of the major produc­ tions of the Society from Kismet, Fiddler on the Roof, Sw eet Charity, Camelot and South Pacific to the complete repertoire of Gilbert & Sullivan operas and the previous productions of My Fair Lady. He has extensive experience in cabaret, both here and in Canada and has featured on commercial television.

His most recent appearance with the Society was in the March production of One Enchanted Evening at the National Concert Hall.

ROBERT McKEVITT

M

Robert McKevitt joined the R & R in 1978, but was already an experienced performer with many of the Dublin and Belfast musical societies from as long ago as 1949.

With the R & R Robert has been most prominent in the bass G & S roles, and has also appeared in many of the R & R’s presentations at the NCH.

GARRY MOGNTAINE As a baritone Garry has appeared with all the major musical societies in Dublin and around the country playing major roles as diverse as Finch in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof Born in Dublin, Garry’s early dramatic training was at school playing leading roles in many Shakespearean dramas. He later became a member of the popular Young Peoples Theatre Group and has appeared in their productions to date including Plaza Suite, (Jessie Kipplinger) 1989, and Nicholas Nickelby (Lord Hawke and other roles) 1988.

He has won many awards for his work as an actor and a singer including the AIMS/ILBS Awards for Best Actor, Best Male Singer and Best Overall Performance in a Musical. Garry studies with Dr. Veronica Dunne at the Leinster School of Music and has played Figaro in the RIAM productions of The Marriage o f Figaro and The Barber o f Seville.

He was soloist with the Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society’s first CD Curtain Call which is a compilation of songs from various musicals and operettas. Television and radio Include The Late Late Show , concerts for BBC Radio and Yeomen o f the Guard and The Mikado for BBC Television. R & R shows include Oklahoma, A nnie Get Your Gun, Yeomen of the Guard, and various concerts at the National Concert Hall.

KILLIAN O ’DOWD Killian comes to the Society with a varied musical background.

He has played Lt. Cable in South Pacific and featured in such shows as Oklahom a, Brigadoon, Fiddler on the R oof and the Wesley Burrows' musical Carrie where he played the leading role of Heloise. He has also taken part in the Gay Byrne Gala Concerts and the Bank of Ireland RTE Proms. His m ost recent appearance with the Society was in last November’s Pirates of Penzance in the National Concert Hall.

EMER OTLAHERTY A versatile and award-winning performer, Em er’s range of achievement covers the entire vocal and perform ing fields.

Highlights include In Com pany w ith Sondheim at the National Concert Hall, The Carmelites in the Theatre Royal, Wexford, La Trauiata at the Bank of Ireland RTE Proms, the inaugural concert for Bank of Ireland’s successful series at the House of Lords and M aritana (Lazarillo) at the Waterford Festival.

Emer played Constance in The Sorcerer and Plaintiff in Trial by Jury for the Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society in the Gaiety Theatre, and took part in their tribute to Gilbert and Sullivan at the NCH.

JOANNE O ’HAGAN An honours graduate of Drama Studies from Trinity College Dublin, Joanne was a highly active m ember of the Dublin University Musical & Dramatic Society, where she directed and produced the Trinity Musical for three consecutive years.

Since graduating Joanne has worked prim arily in television and film production. Her theatrical training and interest has been maintained by her participation with the R & R over the past three years, both in production and in performance.

This year Joanne was given the opportunity to assist Andrew Wickes in this production of M y Fair Lady as Assistant Director and Stage Manager.

EILEEN O ’SULLIVAN Eileen is a graduate of tfie Gaiety School of Acting and holder of a Performer’s Diploma from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA). She is currently studying voice with Edith Forrest in the College of Music.

The last year has been a busy one, touring France, Germany, Denmark and Switzerland with Irish Actors’ Theatre Company, and performing in Dunguaire Castle, Galway.

Previous appearances in Dublin include Stephen Berkoffs production of Salom e at the Gate; at the Olympia, The Wizard o f Oz, The Sound o f Music and The W oman in Black which also toured to Cork Opera House; Carousel at the Tivoli and The Deer’s Surrender at Andrew’s Lane.

Other roles include The Pupil in The Lesson, Mary Warren in The Crucible and Katie Brown in Calamity Jane. Film work includes Pebble and the Penguin, Fatal Inheritance and The Commitments.

ANDREW WICKES Andrew Wickes comes from London and divides his time between directing, acting and writing.

He has appeared as an actor all over Britain and in the West End of London: roles include Narrator in The Soldier’s Tale, Samiel in Der Freischiitz, Orsini-Rosenberg in Am adeus, Salieri in Mozart and Salieri, Bartolo in The Marriage of Figaro, The Ghost of Christmas Present in A Christmas Carol, Manuel Estrada in Lady Be Good!, Walter Furst in William Tell, The Friend in A Respectable Wedding, Kunz in -A Patriot For Me, and both Chauvelin and Lambert in The Scarlet Pimpernel.

His writing includes translations of Le Bourgeois Gentilhomm e (Moliere) and Don Giovanni (Gazzaniga), and stage adaptations of The Oz Trial, Shakespeare Follies, A Christmas Carol (Dickens), The York Mystery Plays, A Tale o f Two Cities (Dickens) and The History of Tom Jones (Fielding).

Andrew currently teaches acting and stagecraft in London, at Trinity College of Music and the National Opera Studio. He is delighted to be working in Dublin for the first time.

LATECOMERS: In response to general request, latecomers will not be admitted until a suitable break in the performance.

FIRE PROCEDURE: In the event of an emergency, please follow the instructions of the staff, who are trained in evacuation procedure, and walk quickly to the nearest fire exit, which is clearly marked.

GENERAL INFORMATION: Smoking is prohibited in the auditorium. Glasses and bottles may not be brought into the auditorium. The use of cam eras and tape recorders is prohibited.

KIOSK: The Gaiety Kiosk is situated in the foyer and is open before the performance and during the interval. The kiosk stocks minerals and confectionery.

ICES: Ices are sold on each level of the auditorium during the interval. For the benefit of party organisers, orders may be placed in advance.

BARS: Bars are situated on the Parterre, Dress Circle and Grand Circle levels. All bars are open half an hour before the performance and during the interval. To avoid queuing for your interval drinks, you may pre-order your drinks and reserve a table in any of the bars. The interval order form is displayed in the foyer and in each bar. Coffee is available.

At the end of the performance, Jo h n Bâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bar on the Parterre level will remain open.

The Gaiety bars offer an attractive setting for Conferences, Press Receptions, Fashion Shows and Meetings. The Management reserves the right to refuse admission and to m ake any alteration in the cast or program m e which may be rendered necessary by illness or other unavoidable cause.
