Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society Nineteen thirteen seem s a long time ago; it was then that the Society gave its first presentation to the Dublin public with The Mikado, in the Q ueen’s Theatre.

Later we moved to the Gaiety where we continued usually twice a year since then. We are generally associated with Gilbert and Sullivan but even as far back as 1917 we ventured into musicals, but we are still loyal to G & S. In addition we have been welcomed into the National Concert Hall, from here we greet you again.

For many years we rented, for rehearsals, the national school in Rathmines which in 1972 was purchased by the Society. We now have a hom e of which we can be justly proud and it is a tangible heritage to pass on to the future m em bers of our Society. Here are centred our social activities, entertaining our Associate Members to evenings of music and also the public to recitals by our principal artists.

It might just be possible that, during our 80 years, som e of you have been, even as children, to a theatre to see the R & R, your being here now may m ean that you still retain an affection for us.

So as time goes by we look back to 1913, in the confidence that Gilbert and Sullivan’s works will still am use and entertain. It seem s fitting to finish our 80 years as we started, with The Mikado.

The Mikado is over a hundred and eight years old. in all that time it has remained the most popular and widely-produced of the operas, appealing as it does to all ages, from the youngest schoolchild too the ‘oldsters’ who have savoured its lovely music all through their lives.

The critics of the time said: ‘Messrs Gilbert and Sullivan must be familiar with success by this time, but never in their brilliant partnership of sprightly music and fantastic fun has a more unanimous verdict of approval been passed upon their labours, than when the curtain fell on Saturday la st. . . ’ These auspicious words bear repeating. How true they have proved to be. We hope our audiences will rejoice again in the Three Little Maids and the brilliantly effective trios and duets, leading to the finale of the first act, when Katisha’s entrance is greeted with disdain, but with some of the most inspiring music in the whole work.

The second act with Yum-Yum’s beautiful ‘The Moon and 1’, the Madrigal and splendid chorus work is rewarding to the last note, and probably by now completely familiar to listeners who are themselves word-perfect in the songs.

The Mikado was last produced by the R & R in 1985.

RAY BARROR Ray Barror, a m em ber of one of the best known families in Dublin’s musical scene, is a regular performer with the R&R. Ray’s career has em braced revue, pantom im e and musicals. He has played in a variety of productions including Cinderella andAladdin at the Olympia Theatre, sum m er seasons at Butlins and leading parts in The N ew Moon, O klahoma, The Boyfriend, S w ee t Charity and Annie G et Your Gun to n am e but a few.

He has also appeared with the Glasnevin Musical Soci­ ety in the NCH and took part in the Jo h n McCormack tribute Love S on g at the MCH and the Braemor Rooms.

One of his m ost enjoyable roles has been that of George M with the Guinness Variety Group.

g e a r 6 id g r a n t Gearoid studied m usic with the late Dr. J . O ’Reilly in the College of Music and graduated with a B.Mus. from CICD. Subsequently, he studied conducting with, am ong others, George Hurst in London. Since then he has worked as conductor, m usic director and arranger for m ost Irish theatrical com panies in works ranging from Mozart to Sondheim .

At present, he is resident conductor with the R&R. Gearoid has appeared as guest conductor with the Irish Cham ber Orchestra, Our Lady’s Choral Society and both National Sym phony and Concert orchestras.

EMER HARTNETT A Graduate of Music from University College Cork, she trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and Cork School of Music.

Her theatre roles began when she first appeared in Cork at the age of 13 in the title role \n A lice in W onderland in the Everyman Theatre. Other credits include the title role in A gnes o f God for which she won best new com er in the Cork Critics Awards, Thunder Up th e Gully and O nce a Catholic, both in the Everyman Theatre.

In musical theatre she played Sr. Amnesia in N unsense in the Cork O pera House, Camelot, Love from Judy, Babes in the Wood, S um m er Revels, with the Monforts in the Cork O pera House and m ore recently Aldonza in Man o f La M ancha with Stage Centre in the Cork Arts and Theatre Club.

E m er has recently moved to Dublin to further her singing career with Dr. Veronica Dunne in the Leinster School of Music and is a m em ber of the RTE Cham ber Choir. This is her debut appearance with the R&R.

HEATHER HEWSON Heather Hewson is a leading artist with the R & R, wellknown for her portrayals of such Gilbert & Sullivan roles a s Katisha, Lady Jane, the Duchess of Plaza Toro, and a wide variety of ‘character’ parts in musicals, notably Bloody Mary in S outh Pacific, Mrs. Pearce in M y Fair Lady, Mamita in the 1978 premiere of Gigi, Golde in F iddler on the Roof, and Queenie in S ho w Boat. In RTE’s concert presentation of Sondheim’s A Little M ight M usic she played with distinction the role of Madame Armfelt.

She has been Chorus Master of the R & R for some years and has played a considerable part in the develop­ ment of the Society’s choral activities.

An Honours graduate in Music and Drama Studies of Trinity College, Dublin, her activities include accompanying, arranging music, conducting, and appearing from time to time in various cabaret entertainments - sometimes in highly unusual disguises!

KEVIN HOGGH Kevin Hough celebrated 25 years in broadcasting last year. He has directed many musicals for societies throughout the country and has appeared in pantomime and revue at the Gaiety and Olympia theatres. Kevin played Ko-Ko in The M ikado also Jack Point in The Yeomen o f the Guard, the Duke in The Gondoliers and Bunthorne in Patience.

In 1969 Kevin toured with the Clann na Gael Festival Singers in Canada and the CIS and has broadcast with the RTECO on several occasions.

His Theatre N ights programme on Radio 1 is now run­ ning over five years and he frequently presents concerts at the NCH. Kevin's production of O klahom a for the Gay B yrne S how proved so successful that he has been auditioning all around Ireland for two “Gay Byrne Gala Concerts” at the NCH. Another exciting event with the RTECO and Gay will be presented in March.

The M ikado is one of Kevin’s favourites and was his first Gilbert & Sullivan role with the R&R at the Gaiety in 1963. He returns to the National Concert Hall on December 12th when he will present a very special event for the Year of the Elderly.

RITA KEALY Rita was born in Dublin and com m enced her dance career at the very early age of four when appearing on the Theatre Royal in R obinson Crusoe with Noel Purcell.

Rita subsequently became a Royalette and trained un­ der Alice Dalgarno. She has worked on many films and television.

Rita has choreographed for many of the Dublin musical societies and has won many awards for her work, includ­ ing Best Choreographer at Waterford International Festi­ val of Light Opera on four separate occasions for A n n ie Get Your Gun, Guys a n d Dolls, M ac and Mabel, all with SMDS and George M with Guinness Musical Society. She has also been awarded Best Choreographer with AIMS and Top of the Town. She has choreographed Anglo Irish Banks in 1989 Tops national final and was choreographer to Irish Distillers Tops when they won the Dublin final.

PAUL KELLY Paul Kelly was born in Dublin and studied singing with Dr. Veronica Dunne at the College of Music. He has won many prizes for his singing including the John McCormack Cup at the Feis Ceoil and appears regularly at the National Concert Hall and on RTE Television and Radio. Equally at home on the concert platform and the stage, he has appeared in leading roles in operas by Mozart, Smetena and Poulenc as well as in oratorio. He has also appeared with Wexford Festival Opera and at the Waterford Festival of Light Opera where he won an award for ‘Best Male Voice’. He sang the role of Fairfax in The Yeomen o f the Guard with the R & R at the Gaiety in 1991 and recently had a success as Ravenal in the College of Music's production of S h o w Boat.

MARGARET KILLIAN Margaret Killian is currently studying in the Leinster Opera Studio under Evelyn Dowling and David Wray.

Her stage work includes the Yeats Festival’s production of The Hour Glass in the Peacock Theatre, Sondheim’s A Little Night M usic and Menotti’s A m ahl and the Night Visitors in the National Concert Hall.

Her oratorio work includes Haydn’s Mass in Time o f War, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Mozart’s Mass in C and Mozart’s Requiem performed in Trinity College Dublin and Belfast.

She is currently a member of the RTE Chamber Choir, and recently recorded tracks from Bill Whelan’s The Lost Kingdom.

Working with the Opera Studio she has travelled throughout Ireland with various operat­ ic scenes including Mozart’s Die Zauberflote. Other plans include Handel’s Belshazzer and Mozart’s The Marriage o f Figaro.

ADAM LAWLOR Adam is delighted to^ be involved in this, his sixth consecutive performance with the R & R, although since this is their 80th year as Dublin’s best known (and best­ loved) musical society, he is only a “newcomer”!

Adam studied voice at the RIAM and the College of Music, and acting at the Brendan Smith Academy. He has also studied piano with Kathleen Louden LL.R.C.M., and finds this skill a great help in learning new roles.

He has worked with many societies countrywide, but is equally at home on the concert platform. Favourite musi­ cals in which he has performed include Zorba, Lil Abner, Chicago and The Hired Man. He also played a leading part in the hugely successful Andrew’s Lane production of A Slice o f Saturday Night, having been given just one week to take to the boards - word and note perfect!

Next in his busy schedule is the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar, and the Broadway classic dance show On Your Toes.

Adam would like to take this opportunity to say a great big thank you to everyone involved in this production, and of course A Very Happy Birthday to the R £>R. There’s nothing like a great big G & S sing!

ROBERT McKEVITT Robert McKevitt joined the R& R in 1978, but was already an experienced performer with many of the Dublin and Belfast musical societies from as long ago as 1949.

With the R&R Robert has been more prominent in the bass G & S roles, and has also appeared in many of the R & R’s presentations at the NCH.

MIRIAM MURPHY Miriam Murphy commenced her musical training with Dr. Veronica Dunne in 1990. Since then, she has been involved in masterclasses with Brigitte Fassbaender, CIgo Benelli and Penelope Price-Jones, as well as having enjoyed wide success in competitions including Abbeyfeale, Cork and Dublin music festivals. This year, Miriam was the overall winner at Dublin’s Feis Ceoil, receiving the Raymond Kearns Bursary for outstanding performance.

Currently a member of the National Chamber Choir, Miriam has had considerable experience as a solo performer, appearing in recital, opera, oratorio and musical comedy, making her National Concert Hall debut last year singing mezzo-soprano solo in Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle.

Future engagements include solo recitals at the National Concert Hall and the Bank of Ireland Arts Centre, operatic scenes on tour with the Leinster Opera Studio and mezzosoprano solo in Beethoven’s Ninth Sym p h o n y with the National Sinfonia.

Miriam has also been chosen to represent Ireland at the European Young Musician of the Future in Brussels in November of this year.

ALISON ELIZABETH RODDY Born in Dublin, Alison has studied vocal production with Evelyn Dowling for the past four years. Initially at the College of Music and currently at the Leinster School (where she is a member of the newly formed Leinster Opera Studio). She holds numerous awards for singing - m ost recenUy, the Robert McCullough Bursary with the R&R, the Thomas Holt Cup for Opera, and a bursary with Waltons World of Music. She has worked extensively in theatre, television and recording. Previous productions include: Martha, Un Ballo in Maschera, Die Fiedermaus, M adama Butterfly and Cosi fan Tutti - for DQOS Opera Ireland, The So und o f Music and The Wizard o f Oz at the Olympia, Trial b y Jury at the NCH with the R&R and the RTECO. Forthcoming engagements include La B ohem e and Lakm e with DGOS at the Gaiety, and a solo recital at the Mansion House in Dublin.

SEAMGS SHAW S eam us is from Dundalk, Co. Louth. He has been greatly Involved in m usicals there for the past few years.

To date his roles have included: Harbison \n S outh Pacific and Freddie in My Fair Lady with Dundalk Musical Society, Lun-Tha in The King and I, with Bernie Baldwin Productions, Pish-Tush in The M ikado and Falke in Die Fiedermaus with Blackrock (Dundalk) Musical Society.

He has appeared at Waterford, Bangor and Derry Light O pera Festivals.

S eam us has been a prizewinner at both the Dublin and Sligo Feiseanna Ceoil.

He is currently studying singing in the R.I.A.M. under Prof. Paul Deegan. This is S eam us’ first outing with the R&R.
