Cole Porter The nam e Cole Porter is one of the ‘greats’ of musical comedy. H e was born on 9th June 1891, in Peru, Indiana, the son of a gentleman farm er and a grandson of a millionaire. He was born rich and lived a life of luxury. Educated at private schools and subsequently at Yale and H arvard Universities. A fter Yale he went to H arvard Law School, however instead of pursuing a legal career he transferred to the Music D epartm ent. He continued studying music in Paris.

In the 20s and 30s his name became synonymous with musical comedy and in all he wrote the scores for 23 shows, including in 1948 Kiss Me, Kate. H e gave the theatre some of its best loved melodies and wittiest lyrics several of which you will h ear in this production of A nything Goes.

RAY BARROR R ay, a m em ber of one of the best known families in D ubin’s musical scene, is a regular perform er with the R & R. His career has em braced revue, pantom im e and musicals.

H e has played in a variety of productions including Cinderella and A laddin a t the Olympia Theatre, sum m er seasons at Butlins and leading parts in New M oon, Oklahom a, The Boyfriend, Sweet Charity and A nnie G et Your Gun to nam e but a few.

H e has also appeared with the Glasnevin Musical Society in the NCH and took part in the John M cCormack tribute L ove Song at the N C H and the B raem or Room s.

MARION DUANE M arion is a B .M us., H .D ip. graduate and studied voice and piano at the College of Music. She is currently working in the Music D epartm ent at R T E as a Presenter/Producer.

Before coming back to D ublin to em bark on her university degree M arion lived in London singing professionally with her sisters w ho came to fame on H ughie G re en ’s Opportunity K nocks series, winning for seven consecutive weeks and subsequently winning the Variety Club A w ard o f G reat Britain.

Television appearances include a six-week series with Tomm y C ooper on ITV, Bernie Winters Show (B B C ), Crackerjack, Starburst and The Keith Harris Show for ITV , Com m and Perform ance for Prince Philip, guest appearances on The Late Late Show, Sonny K nowles Show and L ive at Three.

T heatre experience includes sum m er seasons at Hastings, B ournem outh and Bristol, Principal Girl in Aladdin (Olym pia T heatre, D ublin), role of Agnes in G ypsy (Gaiety T heatre) and M aura in The Scattering (Gaiety Theatre).

H e r last appearance with the R & R was in M ad about Musicals last April in the NCH.

PETER FRAZER-JONES P eter began his career at 12 when he toured the Variety T heatres in England with the then well-known C horister Variety A ct - Stetfani’s Silver Songsters! He later becam e a child actor appearing in several plays and films.

A fter National Service he joined the L ondon Com ­ pany of Brigadoon, and later Carousel, where he played E noch Snow Jnr. H e is probably best known to r his T V work as Producer/D irector. His musical productions include: Bruce F orsyth’s Follies, Frankie H ow ard’s Specials, Tom m y Cooper Specials, B enny Hill, Liberace in London, Victor Borge, Tony Bennett at 'The Talk o f the T o w n ’, Tony Bennett in Dallas, Jack B enny at the R oyal A lb ert Hall.

Currently he has his latest situation comedy playing on the IT V N etw ork L a n d o f H ope and Gloria. His earlier comedies include: A fter Henry, Fresh Fields, George an d M ildred, R o b in ’s Nest, M an about the House. H e has recently returned from Hollywood where he directed a comedy series Too Close fo r Comfort. H e is however turning back to his first love the musical theatre, and hopes to confine his activities in this area.

H e lives in Shepperton near London, by the Tham es.

Is m arried to D ublin-born Kitty and has two children Louise and Guy both working in the entertainm ent industry.

G earoid studied music with the late D r. J. O ’Reilly in the College of Music and graduated with a B.M us. from U C D . Subsequently, he studied conducting with, among other, G eorge H urst in London. Since then he has w orked as C onductor, Music D irector and arranger for most Irish Theatrical Com panies in works ranging from M ozart to Sondheim.

A t present, he is resident conductor with the R & R. G earoid has appeared as guest conductor with the Irish C ham ber O rchestra, O u r L ady’s Choral Society and both the National Symphony and R T E Concert O rchestras.

HEATHER HEWSON Heather is a leading artist with the R & R, well-known for her portrayals of such Gilbert and Sullivan roles as Katisha, Lady Jane, the Duchess of Plaza Toro, and of a wide variety of character parts in musicals, notably Bloody Mary in South Pacific, Mrs. Pearce in My Fair Lady, Mamita in the 1978 premiere of Gigi, Queenie in Show Boat, and Golde in Fiddler on the Roof. She recently played Mme Armfeldt in the RTE presentation of Sondheim’s A Little Night Music in the NCH. She has been Chorus Master of the R & R for some years and has played a considerable part in the development of the Society’s choral activities.

An Honours graduate in Music and Drama Studies of Trinity College, Dublin, her activities include accom­ panying, arranging music, conducting, and appearing from time to time in the Society’s concerts and cabaret entertainments - sometimes in highly unusual disguises!

ANNA JENNINGS Anna, who has a degree in music is studying singing in London. She is a frequent performer on radio and television and also performs frequently with musical societies throughout the country.

As a soloist she has appeared in the NCH and Kilmainham and also with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra at the Adare Festival. She has played leads in grand opera and many lighter roles in musical comedies as well as recitals at home and abroad.

This year she has received the Robert McCullagh Bursary (R & R) plus sponsorship from Shell and the Arts Council; Shortly she will be touring with The Eagle (M AI), as a soloist with the Concert Orchestra in the NCH (RTE), playing the lead in The Gypsy Princess and she also has an invitation to sing in Finland.

RITA KEALY Rita was born in Dublin and commenced her dance career at the very early age of 4 when appearing at the Theatre Royal in Robinson Crusoe with Noel Purcell.

Rita subsequently became a Royalette and trained under Alice Dalgarno. She has worked on many films and on television.

Rita has choreographed for many of the Dublin musical societies and has won many awards for her work, including Best Choreographer at Waterford International Festival of Light Opera on four separate occasions for Anne Get Your Gun, Guys and Dolls, Mac and Mabel, all with SMDS and George M with Guinness Musical Society. She has also been awarded Best Choreographer with AIMS and Tops of the Town.

She has choreographed Anglo Irish Banks in 1989 Tops national final and is currently choreographer to Irish Distillers Tops, which won the Dublin and National Finals in 1991. She has both staged and choreographed this production.

PAMELA KEELEY Pamela began her theatrical training at the age of four with The Billie Barry School of Stage Training. She has appeared in both the Olympia and Gaiety Theatres in pantos and musicals including Mother Goose, Babes in the Wood, Snow Queen, Dick Whittington, Robinson Crusoe, Bugsy Malone, Gypsy and Jack and the Beanstalk. She has appeared in cabaret in the Braemor Rooms several times. Television appearances include Anything Goes, Fdilte Romhat, Sunday Night at the Gaiety and BB Baskin.

In 1991 and 1992 Pamela won Best Female Comedi­ enne Award at the Waterford Festival of Light Opera for the parts of Bonnie in Anything Goes and Little Red Riding Hood in Into the Woods both of which were directed by Brian Merriman.

ADAM LAWLOR Adam is delighted to be returning to the Gaiety for his third successive season with the R & R. He seems to be making a career of playing ‘titled gentlemen’ having just portrayed Sir Freddy Einsford Hill (My Fair Lady), The Don (Gondoliers) and most recently the Pirate King (Pirates o f Penzance).

He studies drama with the Brendan Smith Academy and at the Digby-Stewart College (London) and singing at the RIAM and College of Music. He has been nominated for his comedic performances in AIMS and also won the Best Supporting Actor trophy at the Waterford festival.

When not performing on stage Adam takes part in ‘Murder Mystery’ weekends, and is quite an accom­ plished pianist.

KEN LONG Ken a native of Galway comes from a strong musical background. He has played many leading roles with societies west of the Shannon, including Tony West Side Story, Judas - Jesus Christ Superstar, and many more.

He has trained at the College of Music Dublin and this year sang on the Gay Byrne Gala Concert, at the NCH. He was also chosen to sing at the Theatre Nights Gala Concert in the Dome at the Festival of Kerry. This is Ken’s first production with the R & R, and he is looking forward to it very much.

ROBERT McKEVITT Robert McKevitt joined the R & R in 1978, but was already an experienced performer with many of the Dublin and Belfast musical societies from as long ago as 1949.

With the R & R Robert has been more prominent in the bass G & S roles, and has also appeared in many of the R & R ’s presentations at the NCH. His most recent appearances with the Society were as Baptista in Kiss Me, Kate at the Gaiety and Sergeant Meryll in The Yeomen o f the Guard in 1991, and Mad about Musicals for the Society in April 1992.

MAURICE O ’SULLIVAN Maurice has been playing in R & R productions since 1948. He has played the ‘heavier’ roles in the G & S operas and will also he remembered for his roles in musical comedies such as Colonel Pickering in My Fair Lady, Merlin in Camelot and Lazar Wolf in Fiddler on the R o o f tor the R & R. He has produced musicals with a number of com­ panies and has been active for many years on R & R Committees.
