The Gondoliers There was trouble at the Savoy Theatre. After a successful run of several Gilbert & Sullivan operas the principals were becoming widely known with the London public and they demanded from Richard D ’Oyly Carte increased salaries.

Gilbert, who like his colleague Sullivan, was on a share of the takings, was incensed with fury. H e felt he had been instrumental in making the singers famous and was outraged at their demands for star billing.

He was, at that time, engaged in writing a new opera. He changed the book so that each performer had exactly the same amount to sing and speak, and was able to say that in The Gondoliers there were no stars.

And, of course, the subject of The Gondoliers is . . . equality.

The Yeomen of the Guard Gilbert had an obsession with lozenges. When a new show was due, he kept proposing the same plot, a magic lozenge which when it was sucked would change people’s personalities.

He proposed the lozenge plot for the fourth time to Sullivan at a meeting.

Sullivan, usually a mild man, rejected it in no uncertain terms. Gilbert stormed out of the meeting and went home. While he was waiting for the underground train he saw a poster for the Tower of London. An idea came to his mind and when he got home he sketched out the plot of a new opera on two pages.

The synopsis was dispatched to Sullivan who happily agreed to set it.

The working title of the new piece was The Tower of London but in rehearsal Gilbert decided to change it to The Yeomen o f the Guard.

After a break of six years, the Society has returned to an Autumn Season of Gilbert & Sullivan. As this is Dublin’s year as European City of Culture it was decided to revert to the Savoy Operas which we have presented to the public since the foundation of the Society in 1913.

The Gondoliers is being presented in what we feel is a very exciting interpreta­ tion in modern dress. However, we must keep faith with the past, and therefore, we are also performing a traditional version of The Yeomen o f the Guard.

As an added attraction, we welcome a num ber of new, gifted and talented artists in many of the leading roles, whose performances will, we hope, delight our audiences.

Since joining the R & R in 1967, she has a p p e a re d regularly in the ir A u tu m n Seasons of G ilbert & Sullivan at the G aiety The .tre, w here she has played most of th e leading s o p r a n o roles.

FRED GRAHAM Fred G r a h a m began his singing c areer as a boy soprano with the Dublin G r a n d O p e r a Society and made his first live radio b roadcast in ‘C h il­ d re n at the M i c ro p h o n e ’ at the age of 13. H e la ter studied at th e College o f Music w here he was aw arded a singing scholarship. A Feis Ceoil prizewinner, he has a p peared with various m u s i­ cal societies and has been a regular m e m b e r o f the R & R since 1959. F red has pla yed in many shows, notably those o f G ilbert & Sullivan in which he has played most of the le ading b ariton e roles.

AISLING GREEN Aisling has been dancing since the age of 4 and appeared in her first musical at 11 with OLMS Sallynoggin. Since then she has worked with many societies in shows such as The Wizard o f Oz, The M ikado, The K ing and /a n d Carrie (in which she played the lead). She has also worked in Crossmaglen with the Shelagh Y outh Musical Society in Godspell and Shay H e a ly ’s The Knowledge.

O ver the last 4 years she has appeared with D A Y M S in West Side Story, Zorba and The Hired Man. T his is her second year with the R & R having played Chava in Fiddler on the R o o f last year. She is also one of the three recipients of the R & R ’s R obert McCullagh Bursary for vocal studies.

HEATHER HEWSON H eather is a leading artist with the R & R , well-known for her portrayals of such Gilbert and Sullivan roles as Katisha, Lady Jane, the Duchess of Plaza Toro, and of a wide variety of Character parts in musicals, notably Bloody Mary in South Pacific, Mrs. Pearce in M y Fair L ady, Mamita in the 1978 prem iere of Gigi, Q ueenie in Show Boat, and Golde in Fiddler on the R oof.

She has been Chorus M aster of the R & R for some years and has played a considerable part in the develop­ m ent of the Society’s choral activities.

A n Honours graduate in Music and D ram a Stud­ ies of Trinity College, Dublin, her activities include accompanying, arranging music, conducting, and appearing from time to time in the Society’s con­ certs and cabaret entertainm ents - sometimes in highly unusual disguises!

ANNA JENNINGS

A nna, a graduate in music from M aynooth, per­ formed her first opera at the age of fifteen, the m other in A m ahl and the Night Visitors, and has been on stage since. She has played he leading roles in musicals such as A nnie get your Gun, Carousel, South Pacific, The Merry Widow and many other musicals and operettas.

Since coming to Dublin in 1989, A nna has played Queen of the Night and First Lady in Excerpts form operas in John Player theatre with D G O S. She has sung with the R T E Chamber Choir, given recitals and appeared as soprano soloist in performances of Carmina Burana', a premiere of Children o f the Last Music (G erard Victory) at the Royal Flospital, Kilmainham; played Fiordiligi in Cosi Fan Tutte (Young Dublin Opera). Later this year she will be soprano soloist for M ozart’s Requiem, Bach’s Cantata 140 and will be giving solo concerts in Belfast and Donegal. A n n a is now studying under sponsorship in London with vocal coach Elizabeth Hawes and repetiteurs David H arper and Paul Ham burger.

RITA KEALY

Rita was born in Dublin and commenced her dance career at the very early age of 4 when appearing on the Theatre Royal in Robinson Crusoe with Noel Purcell.

Rita subsequently became a Royalette and trained under Alice Dalgarno. She has worked on many films and televi­ sion.

Rita has choreographed for many of the Dublin musical societies and has won many awards for her work, including Best Choreographer at W aterford International Festival of Light O pera on four separate occasions for A nnie Get Your Gun, Guys and Dolls, Mac and Mabel, all with SM DS and George M with Guinness Musical Society. She has also been awarded Best Choreographer with AIM S and Tops of the Town. She has choreographed Anglo Irish Banks in 1989 Tops national final and is currently choreographer to Irish Distillers Tops, which recently won the Dublin final.

DECLAN KELLY Declan Kelly studies singing with Paul Deegan under scholarship at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. His particular achievements include Feis Ceoil awards, semi-finalist at the International Mozart Competition and being invited to sing for the Irish Youth Fund in New Jersey. He has sung with St. Patrick’s Cathedral Choir and was recently accepted into the National Cham ber Choir.

As a youth Declan perform ed in such various shows as The Sound o f M usic, Mother Courage, Oliver, and Jesus Christ, Superstar. More recently at the R IA M he has sung leading roles in all of their productions. O ther engagements have so far included Camille in St. J o h n ’s Musical Society’s The Merry Widow, Ferrando in Young Dublin O pera’s Cosi Fan Tutte and in July soloist in The Music o f A ndrew L lo y d Webber at the National Concert Hall.

Public concert and oratorio performances include Mozart masses, Bach cantatas, a recent Messiah at the Kilkenny Arts Festival and a forthcoming B ritten’s St. Nicolas in Waterford. His platform repertoire also com ­ prises Irish ballads, G erm an lieder and French songs.

This is Declan’s first appearance with the R & R.

PAUL KELLY Paul studied with Veronica D unne at the College of Music, Dubhn. Equally at hom e on the stage and on the concert platform he has a particular affinity with operetta, winning the Best Male Singer at the W aterford Festival and the AIM S Best Male Performer.

SANDRA KELLY Sandra Kelly who has just obtained her PhD . in Chemistry from U C D is playing with the R & R again after a lapse of several years when she played one of the Fairies in lolanthe.

Studying music under Mary B rennan in the College of Music she has recently played with Crumlin & Roscrea Operatic Societies and last year she played Laurie in the Gay Byrne radio version of Oklahoma produced by Kevin Hough.

This season with the Society she plays Tessa in The Gondoliers.

FIONA McANDREW Originally from Dublin, Fiona grew up in Perth, Western Australia. She received an honours degree in Psychology from the University of W estern Australia in 1989. During this time she also studied singing with Evelyn T hom pson O A M , winning vocal prizes in national Eisteddfods and performing as a soloist in oratorio. She was a m em ber of the W estern Australia O pera Company and the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of W estern Australia, playing a num ber of roles including, ironically, the part of the Duchess in The Gondoliers] Later, she joined the chorus of the Australian Opera.

After meeting Dr. Veronica D unne in Dublin, Fiona stayed to study with her and Ms Jeannie Reddin at the College of Music. This year she played the part of Ms Woodsworth in Benjamin B ritten’s Albert Herring at the Gaiety T heatre and was a participant in masterclasses given by Geoffrey Parsons at the R IA M in March. She has perform ed as a soloist in the Bank of Ireland with the National C ham ber Choir. She was awarded an Arts Council/Aer Lingus Travel Aw ard which enabled her to attend masterclasses in Siena, Italy given by the tenor Carlo Bergonzi. While there she perform ed as a soloist with the choir of the Itahan Institute of Culture in con­ certs around N orthern Italy.

CATHAL McCABE Cathal McCabe was born in Derry and educated there at St. C olum b’s College and in Q ueens University Belfast where he took degrees in chemistry, music and psychology.

H e joined the music staff of R T E in 1969 and w orked on a wide variety of programmes. He was appointed Controller of Radio 2 FM in 1985 and in 1988 became H ead of Music where he has responsibihty for the entire music output of R T E Radio including the National Symphony Orchestra and the R T E Concert Orchestra.

H e first becam e interested in the theatre when he played piano for his fath er’s rehearsals and continued to work first as a music director and later as a producer. A m ong the Irish premieres he has worked on were Irene, George M, A Little Night Music, Man o f La Mancha and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

NOEL M cD o n o u g h Noel was born in Dublin into a theatrical family and his production career comm enced in 1979 when his first show Technicon Irl. (L td.) won the Tops of the Town outright at the final, televised from the Gaiety. He followed this by repeating the feat in 1980 with Irish Distillers Ltd. He then m oved to producing musicals and since then has produced The M usic Man, Finian’s R ainbow , O klahom a, Grdinne agus Fatha Glas, Black Velvet, The Merry W idow, and Die Fledermaus. Noel has produced two winning shows for the W aterford Light O pera Festival, 1983 M ack and Mabel and in 1986 Chicago with A rth u r’s Team . Last year Noel directed award winning Cabaret and had his professional debut with A Slice o f Saturday Night and m anaged the win­ ning Irish Distillers in Tops of the Town 1991. He has appeared in over 30 productions and last appeared with the R & R as Hans A ndersen. Noel is looking forward to playing Jack Point in Yeoman.

ROBERT McKEVITT R o bert McKevitt joined the R & R in 1978, but was al­ ready an experienced perform er with many of the Dublin and Belfast musical societies from as long ago as 1949.

With the R & R R o bert has been m ore prom inent in the bass G & S roles, and has also appeared in m any of the R & R ’s presentations at the NCH. His most recent appearance with the Society was as Baptista in Kiss Me Kate at the G aiety last Novem ber.

JOHN MOONEY John developed his taste for the stage in school where he played in a variety of musicals and plays. He has since qualified as a Chartered Accountant but still retains his theatrical interests.

H e has trained with the College of Music and is cur­ rently with Paul Deegan in the Royal Irish Academy of Music.

H e played Dick, the juvenile lead, in Rhymes produc­ tion of Sellout; Ozzie Babson in Irene; a straight acting part as the priest in Canaries and came back to the music scene again with DAYMS to play in West Side Story, Kiss M e Kate and Godspell.

H e has also sung with the DG O S, AIMS Anniversary Concerts and in the national final of Tops o f the Town which was televised live by RTE.

G a r ry h as a p p e a r e d with all of Ire la n d 's m ajor m usical societies in m an y diverse roles.

H e has stu d ied with Paul D e e g a n at th e R I A M , and V ero n ica D u n n e at the College o f Music, an d has p layed F ig aro in th eir p ro d u ctio n s o f T he Marriage o f Figaro a n d The B arber o f Seville. H e h as won A IM S /IL B S aw ards for Best A c t o r , Best M a le Singer, a n d Best Overall P e r fo r m a n c e in a musical.

G a r ry has also a p p e a r e d in T o p s of the T o w n c o m p e t i ­ tions, including last y e a r ’s winning e n try , P a c k a r d E le c ­ tric.

H e was a soloist o n Curtain Call, the R a th m i n e s & R a th g a r Musical Society's first reco rd , w hich was release d last y ear to g reat acclaim.
