Kiss Me, Kate - Synopsis At F ord’s Theatre, Baltimore, actor-director Fred G raham has just finished a run-through of a musical version of The Taming o f the Shrew. The opening is only a few hours away and everybody’s nerves are on edge. F red is feuding with his co-star and ex-wife, Lilli Vanessi, while Lois Lane, another actress in the company, is unhappy about her rom ance with her fellow player, Bill Calhoun. The older hands have seen it all before it’s just A nother O p ’nin’, A nother Show.

Bill confesses to Lois that he has been gambling and has signed Fred G raham ’s nam e to an lO U . All Lois can ask is W hy Can’t Y ou Behave?

Meanwhile in Lilh’s dressing room, she and F red are at loggerheads again.

They both still love each other, but neither will admit it. Lilli, in fact, has gone so far as to become engaged to H arrison Howell, a wealthy pillar of Washington society. Talk of engagements and anniversaries start Fred and Lilli reminiscing and they rem em ber their first show together in the chorus of a second-rate operetta. T here was a waltz in it which they start to sing.

(Wunderbar).

Two gunmen arrive to collect F red ’s lO U and when he denies having signed it they tell him they will be back later. In her dressingrooom Lilli receives a bouquet which she assumes to have come from Fred and she confesses privately that she remains So in L ove with him. But Fred had m eant the flowers for Lois and although she doesn’t read the accompanying note, Lilli puts it away in her costume.

The play within a play begins. Lilli, Fred, Lois and Bill (Katherine, Petruchio, Bianco and Lucentio) sing We Open in Venice, describing their itinerary around Italy. Petruchio arrives to seek the hand of Katherine, knowing full well her reputation as a shrew. She doesn’t attem pt to hide her feelings, roundly declaring that / Hate Men. Petruchio woos her with Were Thine that Special Face. K atherine is unm oved, but Lilli is, for she has found F re d ’s card to Lois. Lilli and Fred use the rough house action of the play for a real fight and once off stage Lilli announces she is leaving the show immediately. Fred is unable to force her to stay and at that m om ent the gunmen return.

Seizing his chance, Fred acknowledges the lO U but explains th at he can’t honour it if LilH walks out and the show closes. The gunmen force her at gunpoint to go on with the show.

During the interval the actors and their dressers go outside to escape the heat of the theatre. They d o n ’t even feel like going off on dates after the show because I t’s Too Darn Hot. Back on stage Petruchio longs for the women in his past and asks Where is the Life that Late I Led? H arrison Howell arrives in answer to a call from Lilli, b ut before he can see her he meets Lois and it transpires that they have met before. O verhearing their conversion Bill becomes jealous, but Lois, assures him that sh e’s A lw ays True to You (in M y Fashion).

H arrison promises to take Lilli away from the chaotic life of the theatre, but in the life that he proposes she realises she will probably die of boredom.

A t the first opportunity she sneaks out with Fred and they meet the gunmen, who tell them that their boss has been rubbed out and the lO U is no longer binding. They confess that they have becom e fascinated by the Bard and urge everyone to Brush Up Your Shakespeare.

The performance resumes. K atherine, now tam ed, admits I am A sham ed That W omen are so Simple and advises all women to be humble, whereupon Petruchio happily invites her to Kiss Me, Kate.

RAY BARROR Ray, a m em ber of one of the best known families in D ublin’s musical scene, R a regular perform er with the R & R. His career has embraced revue, pantom ime and musicals.

H e has played in a variety of productions including Cinderella and A laddin at the Olympia T heatre, sum­ m er seasons at Butlins and leading parts in N ew Moon, Oklahoma, The Boyfriend, Sweet Charity and A nnie Get Your Gun to name but a few.

He has also appeared with the Glasnevin Musi­ cal Society in the N C H and took part in the John McCormack tribute L o v e Song at the N C H and the B raem or Rooms.

PETER BEAMISH Peter Beamish is no stranger to the stage and in his career to date has appeared in num erous plays and musicals. He has played St. Brioche in The Merry Widow and, on more than one occasion. The Duke in Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Gondoliers. Peter has played Billie Bigelow in Carousel and has also taken part in productions such as A Funny Thing H appened on the Way to the Forum , The Belle of New York, Magyar Melody, The Gypsy B aron, La Belle Helene T he Student Prince, Naughty M arietta and others.

A part from musicals, he played the Young Charlie in the world am ateur premier of Da. On the Irish Dram a Festival Circuit, he has won awards with Sundrive Play­ ers in A rthur Miller’s A View fro m the Bridge and Shaw’s Pygmalion, as well as three Best Actor Awards for his portrayal of Casimir in Brian Friel’s Aristocrats with St. Patrick’s Players, Greystones.

This is his first appearance with the R & R.

DONAL BYRNE Donal has been studying singing in the College of Music with Ann-M arie O ’Sullivan for the last two years.

In that short time he has won the T enor Solo and the Thomas M oore Trophy at Feis Ceoil and also the Tenor Solo at Feis Maitiu.

Roles th at Donal has played range from Buttons in Cinderella (Aughrim Playhouse) to Marco Palmieri in The Gondoliers (Malahide M.S.). He has also appeared in two productions of the Threepenny Opera at the Roy­ al Hospital, Kilmainham and the Royal Dublin Hotel.

He recently played the part of Guiseppe in the DA Y M S Irish Prem iere of The M ost Happy Fella.

In a m ore classical vein he has played the part of D on Ottavio in a recent perform ance of M ozart’s Don Giovanni in the College o f Music.

This is D o n a l’s first appearance with the R & R.

PAT CAMPBELL Pat Campbell is well known to R & R audiences being a performing m em ber since joining the Society in 1945.

H e has been playing leading roles for many years both at the National Concert Hall and here at the Gaiety Theatre.

Pat is particularly known for playing the comic roles in the Savoy O peras and also as compere for many of the Society’s concerts and social occasions.

Now in Kiss Me, Kate he plays the R unyon character of Max O ’H agan, one of the gangsters.

JIMMY DIXON Jimmy began his stage appearances with Wexford Light O pera Society, playing a variety of parts. Follow­ ing this he spent a year touring the IJSA , Canada and South A m erica with the international musical group U p With People.

Over the past eight years he has taken leading roles with many societies and last year guested with Anglo Irish Banks on the nationally televised Tops o f the Town final.

Recent appearances with the R & R include Motel in Fiddler on the Roof, Cornelius in Hello Dolly and the Jester/C om pere in A Song to Sing O! at the NCH last March.

MARION DUANE Marion is a B .M us., H .D ip. graduate and studied voice and piano at the College of Music. She is currently working in the Music D epartm ent at R T E as a Presenter/Producer.

Before coming back to Dublin to em bark on her university degree M arion lived in L ondon singing professionally with her sisters w ho came to fame on Hughie G re en ’s Opportunity K nocks series, winning for seven consecutive weeks and subsequently winning the Variety Club A w ard of G reat Britain.

Television appearances include a six-week series with Tomm y C ooper on ITV, Bernie Winters Show (BBC), Crackerjack, Starburst and The Keith Harris Show for ITV. Com m and Performance for Prince Philip, guest appearances on The Late Late Show, Sonny Knowles Show and Live at Three.

T heatre experience includes sum m er seasons at Hastings, B ournem outh and Bristol, Principal Girl in A laddin (Olympia T h eatre, Dublin), role of Agnes in G ypsy (Gaiety T heatre) and M aura in The Scattering (Gaiety Theatre).

H er last appearance with the R & R was in the title role of Gigi.

GEAROID GRANT G earoid studied music with the late Dr. J. O ’Reilly in th e College o f Music and graduated with a B.M us. from U C D . Subsequently, he studied conducting with, am ong o thers, G eorge Hm^t in London. Since then he has w orked as conductor, music director and arranger for most Irish theatrical companies in works ranging from M ozart to Sondheim.

A t present, he is resident conductor with the R & R. G earo id has appeared as guest conductor with the Irish C h am ber O rchestra, O ur L ady’s Choral Society and both the National Symphony and R T E C oncert orches­ tras,

HEATHER HEWSON H e a th e r is a leading artist with the R & R , well known for her portrayals o f such G ilbert and Sullivan roles as Katisha, L ady Jan e, the Duchess of Plaza T o ro , and o f a w ide variety o f ‘character’ parts in musicals, notably B loody M ary in South Pacific, Mrs. Pearce in M y Fair L ady, M am ita in the 1978 prem ier of Gigi, Q ueenie in Showboat, G olde in Fiddler on the R o o f and Ernestina in Hello D olly!

She has taken p a rt in many plays and won individual awards in dram a festivals on several occasions, and has recently com pleted a four-year course in Trinity College, D ublin leading to a B .A . M oderator degree in M usic and D ra m a Studies.

In recent years she has had the added role of C horus M aster o f the R & R and has played an im portant p a rt in expanding the range of music perform ed by the company.

BRIAN HOWARD Brian is equally at hom e directing m elodram a, Shakespeare, musical comedy, scriptural o r pop musi­ cals to all of which he brings his multi-facetted experi­ ence and visual flair.

Born in D erbyshire, E ngland, he was Artistic D irec­ tor of H arrogate T heatre for six years and during that time the theatre became known for its exciting and adventurous policy.

H e has extensively studied Am erican Musical T h e a tre , Restoration and Elizabethan T heatre and directed every­ thing from music-hall to Jean G enet, and studio theatre to full-scale spectaculars.

H e has adapted many well known books for the stage such as Great Expectations and has worked with a variety of very well known artists. He has successfully directed in Perth, Sweden, Dublin and many times in Britain.

A part from directing plays and musicals Brian is well known in the field o f pantom im e.

H e also teaches dram a and gives talks on Musical T heatre.

The Society welcomes Brian to his first engagem ent as Director with the R & R.

ADAM LAWLOR If all the world’s a stage, then A dam is going to make sure he ’s regularly acting on it!

A dam studied dram a at the Brendan Smith Academy, singing at the R IA M before transferring to the College of Music and piano with Kathleen L ouden LRCM. H e has been twice nominated as Best Comedian in AIMS and won the best supporting actor award at the W aterford International Festival for his perfor­ mance in Zorba. O th e r performances include Caiphas in Jesus Christ Superstar (Olympia T h e a tre ), Pirate King (Baldoyle M .S.) and Melvin P. Thorpe in The Best Little W horehouse in Texas (Olympia T heatre).

He has just completed The M ost H appy Fella which was his fourth show with DAYMS.

DEX McGLOUGHLIN Born in Dublin, Dex began her early training in Classical Ballet with Clodagh Foley. L ater she studied with the Imperial Society of teachers of Dance and is now recognised by them as a registered teacher. She has her own school in South County Dublin where she teaches ballet and modern dance.

Dex is one of the most talented and sought-after choreographers working with am ateur musical soci­ eties in this country. H e r choreography has brought many AIM S nominations and awards and she has di­ rected workshops and residential dance weekends for the association.

Am ong shows to her credit are M y Fair Lady, The Boyfriend, Finian’s Rainbow, Die Fledermaus, The M u ­ sic Man, The Merry Widow and Showboat, Fiddler on the Roof, Hello Dolly for the R & R. This is D e x ’s sixth season with the R & R , having directed two of the spring season shows at the National Concert Hall.

ROBERT McKEVITT R obert McKevitt has been an active m em ber of the Rathm ines & R athgar Musical Society since joining in 1978, but was already quite an experienced perform er having appeared in the Gaiety Theatre with several oth ­ er companies such as D G O S and Old Belvedere Musical & Dram atic Society as far back as 1949.

Bob has appeared with the R & R in most of the bass roles in the Gilbert & Sullivan cycle, as well as many other productions in the Gaiety, N CH , etc.

His most recent appearance was with Opera Theatre Com pany in the Dublin Theatre Festival production of Late N ight Weill.

DES WHELAN Des made his stage debut in 1971 when he played Fagin in W exford Y outh G ro u p ’s production of Oliver, Since then he has played a wide range o f leading roles with W exford Light O pera Society and N ew Ross M usi­ cal Society, which include Paris in L a Belle Helene, Ko-Ko in The M ikado, Einstein in Die Fledermaus and Noah in Two by Two. H older of two Best A ctor awards from the N orthern Ireland Festival of Light O pera for his portrayal of Higgins in M y Fair Lady and Zuniga in Passion Flower.

In the same festival he has won four Best Singer awards as Curley in Oklahoma, Paquillo in L a Perichole, Red Shadow in The Desert Song and Danilo in The Merry Widow.

Recipient of four AIM S (ILBS) nom inations, this year he received the Sylvia Leahy Trophy for Best Male Singer as R o bert in The New M oon, and on his first visit to the W aterford International Festival of Light O pera in Septem ber, in the role of R obert he took hom e the H arry Sage Perpetual C up for Best Male Singer.

Des has appeared on R T E ’s Late Late Show and Live at Three, and is in constant dem and for concert and cabaret w o rk .

This is his first appearance with the R & R and he is looking forward to Taming the Shrew in Kiss Me, Kate.

R & R NEWS You are very welcome to our production of Kiss Me, Kate. This production is the culmination of six months planning and three months of intensive rehearsals.

We hope you will enjoy our presentation and will tell your friends to come along and enjoy it also. The success of the production depends on the support we receive, which we greatly respect and appreciate.

“CURTAIN CALL” - FIRST R & R RECORDING This is the first recording by the Society and features fourteen tracks from well-known shows, most of which have been presented by the Society in the past. Special orchestration and choral arrangements were commissioned by the Society for this recording, which with the large chorus and soloists will ensure hours of listening pleasure. We are very pleased with the early reaction to our recording and we hope that you will enjoy it.

Copies may be purchased from members of the Society in the theatre at £6.99 for cassette and £10.99 for CD. It is also available from the Society (tel. 971577) and record shops.

The recording is m arketed by L unar Records under the RTE label.

OTHER ITEMS On Tuesday 6th November we took part in Theatre Nights Concert in the NCH, which is produced by Kevin Hough for RTE. This will be broadcast in the immediate future and we would recommend your listening to what was a most enjoyable and successful concert.

On 15th Septem ber the Society presented the famous American bari­ tone Mr. Sherrill Milnes in a special celebrity concert in the National Concert Hall. It was a glittering occasion and we were honoured by the presence of President Hillery and Mrs. Hillery. This was an important event in the musical life of the city and our introducing Sherrill Milnes to Dublin audiences was received with acclamation.

The Society continues to present recitals in its Concert C entre in Rathmines, the most recent being by the H unt Sisters (piano and violin) on 31st October, sponsored by M urphy & G unn Motors, Rathgar.

The purpose of these recitals is to develop an interesting musical venue in Rathmines for the benefit of the local residents.

The Society is an am ateur musical society; none of the performers or officers of the Society receive any paym ent, but give their talents and services free in the best interests of the Society and as their contribution to the musical life of Ireland.
