The Story of Hello Dolly Dolly Levi is a widow of Irish extraction living in New York who amongst other talents has proved very successful as a ‘matchmaker’. Her latest cUent is Horace Vandergelder, a very wealthy businessman of pompous temperament, living in Yonkers who is contemplating marriage for the second time.

The action takes place in the 1890s, between Yonkers and New York and involves Horace’s two employees Cornelius and Bam aby and his niece Ermengarde, all influenced in different ways by Dolly who keeps the action moving at a fast pace. Also involved is a milliner and widow, Mrs. Irene Molloy, who had been suggested as a possible second bride for Horace. Little does she know that Dolly sees him as a likely match for herself. To eliminate Mrs. Molloy, and so that Vandergelder won’t suspect her own schemes she even undertakes to introduce him to yet another wealthy widow, Em estina Money.

The fun rages fast and furious with Dolly busy ‘matchmak­ ing’ for everyone in sight. The action then changes to the famous Harmonia Gardens Restaurant in New York, where excitement has reached fever pitch at the news that Dolly is about to come back there for the first time since her husband Ephraim Levi’s death. By now the young people have satis­ factorily paired off and are there enjoying themselves, so Dolly decides the time has come to set the scene to ‘capture’ Horace. However, before events can reach a satisfactory conclusion, Vandergelder learns that his niece is now part of the stage show. His rage is such that he ends up in the prisoners’ dock for creating a disturbance and Dolly bids him farewell.

Next day he is back in Yonkers. By now alone, he suddenly realises that he misses Dolly. He needn’t worry though, she has no intention of letting him get away. She returns to Yonkers, all is forgiven, and she agrees to marry him.

CECIL BARROR Cecil has been involved in musicals for over 60 years.

D uring which time he has perform ed with numerous societies including the original Dublin O peratic Society.

H e has been a m em ber of the R & R since 1930 and his m ost recent role with them was in 1988 in Fiddler on the R oof.

A m em ber of the Abbey School of Acting he has played in both the Abbey and the G ate — he was in the original cast of Stephen D and Philadelphia Here I Come!. H e will be long rem em bered for his role in Hugh L eo n a rd ’s Da at the Olympia.

His has been a very famous voice on radio over the years w here his activities are legion.

JAMES BELCHAMBER Jam es is celebrating his tw entieth year directing for th e R & R . His first show was in 1969 which was the first production of M y Fair L a d y in Ireland. He was also p ro d u c er o f the first am ateur production of Fiddler on the R o o f in the world for the R & R in 1972.

Jam es em b ark ed on a theatrical career by winning the L everhum e Scholarship to the Royal Academy of D ram atic A rt. H e has since worked in nearly all branches of the theatre and is renowned internationally through his work as an a cto r in theatre, film and television.

H e started directing when he was asked to help in the revived M alvern Festival Com pany. A p a rt from his w ork in E ngland he has since directed 28 shows in Ireland, 12 o f them being for the R & R at the Gaiety T h eatre.

B eing half Irish and half English he is delighted to be back once m ore with the R & R w orking with old friends and making many new ones.

Alf has been playing in G ilbert and Sullivan since he ® ^*"8 ®Hospital School. L ater he played the H e n iy L itton parts as a m em ber of C lontarf Parish Musical Society and has about nine, in all, o f these in his repertoire. H e has played many roles with the R cfe R through the years.

Recently he has undertaken parts in grand opera and played D r. D ulcam ara in L ’Elisir d ’A m ore a n d Sir T ristram in Martha.

JIMMY DIXON Jimmy began his stage appearances with Wexford Light O pera Society playing a variety of parts.

Following this he spent a year touring the USA, Canada and South America with the international musical group.— ‘Up With People’. Over the past seven years he has taken leading roles with many societies.

In 1988 he appeared as Motel, the tailor, in the R & R production of Fiddler on the R o o f and guested with the Anglo Irish Banks show on the nationally televised Tops o f the Town final from the Gaiety last June.

EAMONN EATON Eamonn has been on stage since childhood and has worked with many societies in the Dublin area. He studies singing with Ruth Maher in the College of Music.

His appearances with the R & R include Gigi and Showboat at the Gaiety and The Magic of Lerner and Lowe at the National Concert Hall. He was one of the scholarship recipients in the R & R 75th Anniversary Scheme.

GEAROID GRANT Gearoid studied music with the late Dr. J. O ’Reilly in the College of Music and graduated with a B.Mus. from UCD. Subsequently, he studied conducting with, among others, George Hurst in London. Since then he has worked as conductor, music director and arranger for most Irish theatrical companies in works ranging from Mozart to Sondheim.

A t present, he is resident conductor with the R & R. G earoid has appeared as guest conductor with the Irish Cham ber Orchestra, Our Lady’s Choral Society and both the R TE Symphony and Concert orchestras.

AISUNG GREEN Aisling has been dancing since the age of 4 and appeared in her first musical at 11 with OLMS Sallynoggin. Since then she has worked with many societies in shows such as The Wizard o f Oz, The Mikado, The King and /a n d Carrie (in which she played the lead). She has also worked in Crossmaglen with the Shelagh Youth Musical Society in Godspell and Shay Healy’s The Knowledge.

Over the last 4 years she has appeared with DAYMS in West Side Story, Zorba and The Hired Man. This is her second year with the R & R having played Chava in Fiddler on the Roo/last year. She is also one of the three recipients of the R & R ’s Robert McCullough Bursary for vocal studies.

HEATHER HEWSON H eather is a leading artist with the R & R. well known for her portrayals of such Gilbert and Sullivan roles as Katisha, Lady Jane, the Duchess of Plaza Toro, and of a wide variety of ‘character’ parts in musicals, notably Bloody Mary in South Pacific, Mrs. Pearce in My Fair Lady, Mamita in the 1978 premier of Gigi, Queenie in Showboat and Golde in Fiddler on the Roof.

She has taken part in many plays and won individual awards in drams festivals on several occasions, and has recently completed a four-year course in Trinity College, Dublin leading to a B. A. Moderator degree in Music and D ram a Studies.

In recent years she has had the added role of Chorus M aster of the R & R and has played an important part in expanding the range of music performed by the company.

DEIRDRE HODGINS Deirdre studied piano and voice for several years and is currently a student of Evelyn Dowling at the College of Music. She was also awarded a Diploma in Drama Studies at the Brendan Smith Theatre Academy.

She has appeared with the Tivoli Lyric Players in The Pirates o f Penzance; the DGOS in Turandot, Orfeo ed Euridice, La Boheme and The Pearl Fishers and in Fiddler on the R o o f with the R & R.

CATHAL MacCABE Cathal was bom in Derry and educated at St. C olum ba’s College and Q ueen’s University College, Belfast where he took degrees in Chemistry, Music and Psychology.

H e joined the music staff of R TE in 1969 and worked on a wide variety of programmes including the Gay B yrne Show. H e was appointed Controller of Radio 2 FM in 1985 and in 1988 he became Head of Music where he has responsibility for the entire music output of RTE R adio including the RTE Symphony Orchestra and R T E Concert Orchestra.

H e first became interested in the theatre when he played for his father’s rehearsals and paid his first visit to the W aterford International Festival of Light Opera as a perform er in 1963. He now works as a director. Among the Irish premiers he has worked on were Irene, George M, A Little Light Music, Man o f La M ancha and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. He has worked with St. Agnes Choral Society, Belfast, since 1976.

H e rejoins the R & R for Flello Dolly having played a number of leading roles with the Society in the past — the most memorable of which was as King Arthur in Camelot, and the P irate King in The Pirates o f Penzance.

DEX McGLOUGHLIN Dex is one of the most talented and sought-after choreographers working with amateur musical societies in this country. She also runs a very successful ballet school where she teadies classical ballet and modern dance. ~ H er choreography has brought many AIMS nomina­ tions and awards and she has directed workshops and residential dance weekends for the Association.

Among shows to her credit are My Fair Lady, The Boyfriend, Finian’s Rainbow, Die Fledermaus, The M usic Man, The Merry Widow, arxd for the R & R Show boat and the very successful Fiddler on the R o o f at the Gaiety last November.

This is D ex’s fifth season with the R & R having directed two of the spring season shows at the National Concert Hall.

She is delighted to be working on this production as H ello Dolly is one of her favourite shows.

MARIOS MEGANNETY Marion started her musical career with St. Louis Musical Society and played roles in a number of shows including A nne o f Green Gables, H alf a Sixpence, Fiddler on the Roof, Hello Dolly and took the part of Mrs. Mullins in Carousel.

She studied voice production under Micheal O ’Higgins and Maciej Smolenski at the R.I.A.M. She joined the R & R in 1983 and has taken part in most of their productions since then both in the Gaiety and the National Concert Hall.

JOHN MOONEY John developed his taste for the stage in school where he played in a variety of musicals and plays. He has since qualified as a Chartered Accountant but still retains his theatrical interests.

H e has trained with the College of Music and is cur­ rently with Paul Deegan in the Royal Irish Academy of Music.

H e played Dick, the juvenile lead, in Rhymes produc­ tion of Sellout; Ozzie Babson in Irene; a straight acting part as the priest in Canaries and came back to the music scene again with D A VMS to play in West Side Story, Kiss Me Kate and Godspell.

H e has also sung with the D GO S, AIMS Anniversary Concerts and in the national final of Tops o f the Town which was televised live by RTE.

JOYCE TEEVAN Joyce is a long-time student of dance and dram a and has been studying singing with Deirdre Grier Delaney for eight years in the College o f Music, where she has b e en aw arded four vocal scholarships.

In 1988 she won “Best Fem ale Singer’ and ‘Best O verall Perform ance’ in the AIM S/ILBS Award Schem e for the title role in Peg o ’ M y Heart. This year she becam e one o f the three recipients of the R & R ’s R o b e rt M cCullough Bursary. HeRo D olly is Joyces’s second show with the R & R — she played H odel in Fiddler on the R o o f in 1988.

C iaran is 18 years old and has recently finished school at B elvedere College where he took part in such musicals as Godspell, Fiddler on the R o o f and A nnie Get Y o u r G un. H e also took part in the college’s production o f H ello D olly at the SFX Hall playing the part of Cornelius Hackl.

H e is now studying for a communications degree at the U niversity of Dublin. This is his first appearance with the R & R.

HAZEL YEOMANS H azel Y eom ans started h e r stage career in the old T h e a tre Royal at the age o f three and during the following years she played the Royal, the Q ueens and the O lym pia with such well-known variety artistes as N oel Purcell, Cecil Sheridan and Danny Cummins.

In h e r teens she joined Jimmy O ’D ea and his company at the G aiety T heatre for the Christmas pantom im es and A ugust revues, which she played for a num ber of years.

D uring this tim e she also becam e a m em ber of the R & R a n d starred in Showboat, O klahom a, A n n ie G et Your G un, L o v e fro m Judy and num erous G ilbert and Sullivan productions. She also had a television and radio series with R T E and played with Ray M cAnally and M ilo O ’Shea as the lead in the musical Carrie.

H azel later moved to L ondon and continued her m usical career there, appearing on ITV and LWT television and succeeded Barbra Streisand in the title role in Funny G irl at the Prince of W ales Theatre.

She then becam e involved in the world of films and travelled to various countries with her late husband, the international film director, Peter Collinson, recording songs and voice­ overs for foreign movies. She continued this work on her return to L ondon where she now lives.

R & R NEWS 75th ANNIVERSARY YEAR — 1988

It was with great pride that the Society celebrated its 75th Anniversary in 1988. Many additional fiinctions were organised for our Associate Members, Active Members and Guarantors. These all added to the great feeling of pride within the Society on achieving 75 years of successful musical endeavour.

PRESIDENTIAL MEDALLION AND CHAIN OF OFFICE

The 75th Anniversary Committee presented a Presidential Medallion and Chain of Office for the President of the Society. The Medallion and Chain of Office were executed in Irish silver by Dublin silversmiths to the special design of the Society.

This marvellous momento of our 75th year is worn by our President, Mr. Clem Ryan in the photograph appearing in this programme.

R & R MUSICAL SOCIETY CONCERT CENTRE

The Society rebuilt its premises as a concert centre in 1988 (after very serious fire damage), incorporating the latest technical facilities, with seating for 170 prople. The premises are being used for recitals, concerts, management conferences, etc., in addition to Society requirements. All enquiries regarding the Concert Centre should be made to the Director at 956584.

RECITALS

The inaugural recital of our series of recitals was given by Bernadette Greevy, mezzo-soprano, on 10th October, 1989, the recital was a great success.

O ther artists engaged to present recitals include: Finbar Wright, tenor; Anne Maria Smith, soprano; Daire Fitzgerald, cellist (presently with Yehudi Menuhin) and of course the R & R itself.

FEIS CEOIL 1989

R & R Cup was won by Joyce Teevan (who plays a leading part in Hello Dolly).

Forde/Taylor Prize was won by Louise Maxwell.

R & R MONTHLY CLUB DRAW

The R & R Monthly Club Draw ended in October 1989. All funds from the draw were directed to the rebuilding of our premises as a concert centre.

The contribution from the draw was significant in the total rebuilding costs and the Society is most grateful to all those who took part in the draw.

Gaiety Theatre Information and Services Booking Information: The Box Office is open on l\/londay-Saturday 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. for advance bookings. Credit Card Bookings accepted by telephone 771717. Postal Bookings are processed in order of receipt. Please make cheques payable to Gaiely Entertainments Ltd. and enclose ASE, or add postage to your remittance.

Gift Vouchers: May be purchased at the Box Office.

Car Parking: We offer car parking facilities, in association with Dublin Corporation. You will receive, with your tickets, a voucher for Drury Street Car Park; this enables you to use the car park for 50p, between 6 p.m. and midnight. The Car Park is closed on Public Holidays.

Latecomers: In response to general request, latecomers will not be admitted until there is a suitable break in the performance.

Fire Procedure: In the event of an emergency, please follow the instructions of the staff, who are trained in evacuation procedure, and walk quickly through the nearest Fire Exit, which is clearly marked.

General information: Smoking is prohibited in the auditorium. Glasses and bottles may not be brought into the auditorium. The use of cameras and tape recorders is prohibited.

Kiosk: The Gaiety Kiosk is situated in the foyer and is open before the performance and during the interval. The kiosk stocks minerals and confectionery.

Ices: Ices are sold on each level of the auditorium during the interval. For the benefit of party organisers, orders may be placed in advance.

Bars are situated on the Parterre, Dress Circle and Grand Circle levels.

All bars are open half an hour before the performance and during the interval.

To avoid queueing for your interval drinks, you may pre-order your drinks and reserve a table in any of the Bars.

The interval order form is displayed in the Foyer and in each Bar. Coffee is available in all the Bars.

At the end of the performance the Bars on the Dress Circle and Parterre levels will remain open.

The Gaiety Bars offer an attractive setting for Conferences, Press Receptions, Fashion Shows and Meetings.

The Management reserves the right to refuse admission and to make any alteration in the cast or programme which may be rendered necessary by illness or other unavoidable cause.
