THE SORCERER The Sorcerer was the second work in which Gilbert and Sullivan collaborated. It was preceded two and a half years earlier by Trial by Jury. Both were written originally without any idea that they would one day be used with a musical score.

First presented at the Opera Comique on 17th November 1877, its six months career was so successful that Sullivan was enabled to take a holiday in his beloved Paris, and Gilbert was encouraged to proceed immediately with the writing of the story for another opera which was to be called H.M.S. Pinafore.

There were many revivals of the The Sorcerer in the next eight years, during which five more operas were written. It was still doing good business, in the early months of 1885, as the partners put the finishing touches to The Mikado.

The story opens with an outdoor celebration of the engagement of the lovely Aline to Alexis Pointdextre of the Grenadier Guards.

Alexis, wanting everybody to be as happy as he is, calls in the Sorcerer — John Wellington Wells — and asks him to make up a magic potion.

Aline is not sure that she approves, but goes off to find an immense teapot in which the drink will be brewed.

The Socerer arrives, grim in appearance and recites his incantation.

The stage darkens, there is great noise and fireworks.

The second act sees the company happily under the influence of the magic potion, but some have been paired of with the wrong partners.

The fun is fast and furious as they eventually extricate themselves.

The opera was last produced by the R. & R. in 1968.

THE MIKADO The Mikado — ever-young, and greatly loved — was the Gilbert & Sullivan opera chosen for the Society’s presentation seventy golden years ago on December 8th, 1913 in the old Queen’s Theatre.

Of the very first staging of the opera, twenty years earlier in the Savoy Theatre in London, the critics agreed that never in their brilliant partnership of sprightly music and fantastic fun, has a more unanimous verdict of approval been passed upon their labours — the partnership was never stronger!

For this (twenty-ninth) presentation of The Mikado by the R. & R., we are assured that its place in the hearts and minds of its actors and audiences is still secure, for the power of its dramatic music, lovely songs and brilliant sense of fun.
