THE GONDOLIERS This very popular and wellknown opera was given its first performance on December 7, 1889, the eleventh in the series of Gilbert and Sullivan operas, ft is reported that 'this first night was the most brilliant of all their first nights and that at the close the company received an ovation that could be heard outside, above the roar of the Strand.’

It is the love story of two gondoliers and their pretty wives, and of their entanglement with the Duke and Duchess of Plaza Toro and the ir ‘beauti­ ful daughter, Casilda’, whose affections, however, are already engaged by her father’s drummer boy, Luiz. Two duets between these two are among the most tuneful that Sullivan has written. The famous ‘Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes’ is a highlight of the second act.

Several delightful quartets are also in the score, notably the elegant Gavotte in the second act, and some of the gayest and most exuberant music of all the operas.

It was also responsible for an unusual acknow­ ledgment of each other’s work, when at the end of the first performance, Gilbert thanked Sullivan and said ‘the opera gives one the chance of shin­ ing right through the twentieth century with a reflected light.’

One must agree that he spoke the truth.

THE YEOMEN OF THE GUARD T h e Yeomen of the Guard’ was our first produc­ tion in the Gaiety Theatre. It was presented on December 7, 1914, and was destined to be the first of almost two hundred of our shows to be staged here.

It is one of the most famous of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas and was considered by the authors to be the best they had written together.

G ilbert saw in the character of Jack Point a por­ trait of himself and was at his happiest in his partnership with Sullivan during the writing of it.

Sullivan apparently had some difficulty in writing the famous ‘I have a Song to Sing O’ and eventu­ ally appealed to Gilbert who helped out with part of an old sea shanty he had heard sung by sailors on board his yacht. After hearing the first dozen bars o r so, Sullivan exclaimed : ‘I’ve got it!’ and assured his partner that ‘for once’ he was respon­ sible fo r the music as well as the w o rd s !

It was their tenth work.
