Celebrate our Cluster IV Sorors
International Day of Prayer
MESSAGE FROM Soror Joyce G.Barlow
Cluster IV Coordinator Greetings Sorors of Cluster IV, Our newsletter of this fall season covers our activities of the past few months and events that salute you and the service projects of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®. Everyone has been extremely engaged as the pandemic is abated by the vaccines and steadily returning to a hybrid mode with increasing components of more in person interactions. As I address this topic, my attention is focused on the newer members of our chapters and how are we incorporating mentorship into their learning process. Frequently, we forget, then again hold, our knowledge and expertise as a gold bullion without sharing our nuggets of wisdom. My challenge to any seasoned members who has kept themselves abreast of changes and revisions to our policies and practices, is to mentor our newer members. Accept the script that you can lead from the inside without being in an executive position within the chapter. Voluntarily accept the role as mentor without being asked. Join a committee and announce your support of the appointed or voted leader. You may ask the question “How can I mentor?” First and foremost, your primary goal is to assist and support the person through the learning process and eventually through education, your level of expertise will require occasional guidance. To assist the mentee, remember your role and allow the mentee to lead and learn. Your willingness to listen to the ideas of the mentee and to incorporate new diverse approaches, technology and shared learning is essential for your chapter’s growth and retention. According to Matrix Blog, “there are five types of mentoring, but for our purposes, we can readily incorporate these three: natural, peer and situational.” Interestingly, both the mentor and mentee gain knowledge and depth from the shared experience. Under the leadership of our 13th South Atlantic Regional Director, Lucretia Payton-Stewart, the Leadership Development Committee has generated the AKA Leadership Modules. Let’s utilize the resources that were intentionally produced for our maturation. Proceed to aka1908.com, members only, resources, forms and documents and in the search box type “lead.” You will immediately note our AKA University Modules. Remember this information is only accessible if you are a financial member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Let’s continue leading from the inside to create stronger bonds of sisterhood and service. Sisterly Leaership,

CRU Military is a ministry that connects the global military community to Jesus Christ. Their International Team is impacting military members in almost 33 countries in the areas of Combat Trauma, PTSD, Family Life and specific needs of individual communities. Heart of the Bride is ministry mostly focused on orphans. They have connected with and developed orphan ministries in Haiti, Kenya, Zambia, and India. Within the orphan ministries they focus on Residential Care, Education and Spiritual Development, and Transition Support. 21 sorors from the chapter participated in this informative and successful event.

Recipients of the 2021 scholarships were Kelsie Peacock and Dawson Herring. Kelsie was an ASCEND Scholar, #CAP participant and volunteered in the Madison County Get Out to Vote rally. She was involved in various school activities and a member of the varsity cheerleading squad. While dual-enrolled at North Florida College, Kelsie became a Certified Nursing Assistant. She plans to continue at North Florida College in Madison and pursue advanced degrees in Nursing. Dawson Herring has participated in various community service projects in the county, was active in school extra-curricular activities and made the President’s List while dual enrolled at North Florida College. Dawson is enrolled in Florida State University. Upon graduation from FSU, he plans to attend Dental School at the University of Florida. Students were required to demonstrate academic achievement, leadership skills and community service. Applicants had to submit a letter of recommendation and an essay of their future goals. Both students received a $750.00 scholarship.

From 2013 to 2019, Delta Iota Omega (DIO) Chapter raised from $4000 to $8000 each year for its health and wellness initiatives and its mentoring programs, using proceeds from the chapter's annual fundraising gala Pink in the City. Because of the pandemic, DIO cancelled the gala and sponsored a 2021 Pink Challenge activity for which sorors challenged each other to donate "more green for the pink" in honor of the chapter's 75th anniversary. The Pink Challenge yielded $3,450.00. As a result. the chapter made virtual donations to these focus groups: American Heart Association, Covenant Care for Alzheimer's, and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. DIO is also a Silver Partner for Covenant Care for Alzheimer's annual Memory Walk, and Covenant Care cosponsors the chapter's annual Caregivers' Day activities
