W ILKINSON G ELBVIEH R ANCH
Wilkinson Gelbvieh Ranch
is located in the arid prairie of SE Colorado, between Trinidad and LaJunta. Bill and Nancy own around 250 Gelbvieh and Balancer cows, about 2/3 of which are registered. Their daughter, Sydney, has recently returned to the ranch, working for CSU Extension as a Regional Specialist for Rural Engagement. Together, the three of them make up Wilkinson Gelbvieh Ranch.

The land has been in Bill’s family since the early 1950s, when his parents, Charles and Jo Wilkinson, moved their sheep and Hereford cows from the family’s ranch in the Hill Country of Texas. Charles laid the foundation for the Colorado ranch, with his forwardthinking conservation and infrastructure practices - all of which have greatly benefited the Wilkinsons in their operation.
Growing up with Herefords, Bill made some big changes in the ranch’s genetics. After obtaining an Animal Science degree from CSU, then managing a registered Limousin herd in the San Luis Valley of Colorado, Bill moved to West Texas in the early-1980s to manage a ranch there, bringing his Herdbuilder Gold Strike son, a PB Gelbvieh cow and a yearling heifer. He had based his decision to move to the Gelbvieh breed on the landmark 1980’s MARC study, which showed the breed’s superiority in both performance and maternal characteristics. During his time in Crane, Bill met and married Nancy, added Sydney to their family and returned to Colorado in 1990, with 2 PB bulls, 10 PB cows, 15 half-blood females and 65 head of crossbred cows.

Back in Colorado, they went to work to develop their Gelbvieh herd, through select purchases and use of AI and ET. They used Angus sires as the logical choice for breeding heifers and, after seeing the acceptance and marketability of the Gelbvieh-Angus cattle, they began to incorporate Angus genetics into their mature Gelbvieh cowherd. So, when the Balancer program was implemented, the Wilkinsons easily took advantage of the new opportunity.
The environment of SE Colorado can be difficult, but the Gelbvieh cow excels. Forage is almost always in short supply and can be pretty spread out, so the Wilkinsons emphasize the traits that produce good-structured cattle that thrive in these conditions, while still producing the pounds that everyone needs to stay in business. To best adapt to the environment, the Wilkinsons also maintain a Gelbviehbased commercial herd. That allows them to better utilize some of the large 10,000+ acre pastures, with larger groups of cattle and multiple bulls. Also, having commercial cattle gives them the option to reduce their herd more quickly, if needed, and still realize
the value of those cows.
From the beginning, the Wilkinsons have been actively involved in the leadership and development of the Breed, through Association membership and cattle exhibition at local, state, and national levels. “The history of the Gelbvieh breed is a tribute to so many people and we are proud to have been a part of that history since 1986. The road has been a little hard to navigate at times and has had its ups and downs, but we are proud to have been on this path. We are excited to stay the course and see what the next 50 years will bring for the Wilkinson family and the Gelbvieh breed.”

Last year was our first year with DVAuction and we felt like it was very successful! Not only were we able to reach many more people outside of our area, but we also found having the option of on-line bidding was really a time-saver for our friends and neighbors who just couldn’t attend the Sale. It was a little tight in our “Lodge,” but we learned a lot and were very pleased with the Sale. Thank you to all of our buyer and bidders.
This year, we will be moving back to the Barn, right next to the Cattle. We’ve made some improvements there – adding a concrete floor, bathroom and high-speed Internet – so we will be more comfortable and have easier access to the bulls.
Guarantees:
• Sight Unseen Purchases are Guaranteed - “If you don’t like ‘em, you don’t take ‘em!”
• Bulls are guaranteed for one Breeding Season or one year, whichever comes first. (Disclaimer - Negligence voids guarantee)
♦ Leave Trinidad on 350/160
♦ Continue on 350 (as if you were going to La Junta)
♦ Right before Mile Marker 11 (the mile markers start at the 160/350 “Y”), turn RIGHT onto County Road 48
♦ Go straight EAST for about 8 miles
♦ At the metal cut-out “Wilkinson Ranch” sign, take a right over the cattle guard
♦ Follow that road, until you come to a “Y”, and take the left fork. It will circle down to the barn and corrals.
If coming from La Junta, reverse it and turn LEFT just past Mile Marker 11.
• Delivery Policy – We encourage you to bring your trailers, but we understand that isn’t always feasible. So, we will be happy to deliver your bulls, free of charge, up to 100 miles. After that, we will charge $2/mile
Note: Wilkinson will retain 1/3 semen interest on all sale bulls. If any bull shows potential for AI use, we would like to collect and market his semen, at the buyer’s convenience.
Note: In cases where a Trich test is needed, we can keep the bulls and have them tested here, then work with the buyer for delivery OR the buyer can take the bulls and have them tested at their home vet, and bill us.

La Junta

The Bulls
As you look through the catalog, our hope is that you appreciate what you see and get an idea of what we are doing to try to meet each of your individual needs. Our goal for ourselves and our customers is to have a good breed-up each spring, producing those calves that come easily and thrive and grow. We are also continuing to focus on improving the carcass value in our cattle, so that they will do well in the feedlot and grade well at the plant.
We understand that many of our customers want to keep their replacement heifers, so we also want to be able to provide those bulls for those heifers. Many of these bulls will serve as dual-purpose bulls – enough calving ease and performance to use on both heifers and mature cows, and we know that is a plus for many of you with smaller herds.
To meet our goals and standards, we continue to add new herd sires from some of the nation’s top herds, as well as from our own herd. We also use anywhere from 1015 AI sires through our breeding program each Spring, with the goal of enhancing our cow herd and their calves. We want everyone who comes to our Sale to be able to find bulls that meet their individual needs, and we think that is possible with this year’s offering.
These bulls have been developed on a high roughage ration, at home in a 3-acre trap. Last year, we made the investment in some new feeding facilities and a vertical mixer and we were very pleased with the change to daily feeding. The bulls’ rate of gain has improved, and we feel we can better monitor their health, as well. With the size of the trap, the bulls have lots of room to travel and we regularly walk through them to get familiar with them and vice versa. All bulls are PI-BVD free and have been ultra-sounded, PAP tested and passed a breeding soundness exam. If Trich tests are required, we can keep the bull(s) and get them tested here, then get them to the buyer later. Or, the buyer can take the bulls, have them tested at home and send us the bill. Supplement sheets with Ultrasound data, PAP scores, scrotal measurements and any other updates will be available the week prior to the Kick-Off Saturday, on our website, on Facebook and by request.
Bulls will be eligible to go anywhere in the United States. If you cannot take them right away, we can keep them here, at a minimal charge. If you want to take them on Sale Day, health and brand papers will be ready to go. If you need them delivered, we will work with each of you to get the bulls to your place, charging for delivery after the first 100 miles.
Since the bulls are here at home, feel free to give us a call anytime and we will be happy to have you walk through the bulls at your convenience. Then, return for the Sale Day! If you can’t be here, this year you will have the opportunity to bid on-line, through DVAuction. That will make it easier to fit into your schedules.

For several years, we have participated in the AGF (American Gelbvieh Foundation) Scale and Rail contest (owned steers) and Steer Challenge (donated steers). The data we have been able to gather has made it worthwhile, while the donation to the AGF helps them continue funding their efforts for the breed. In 2023, our group included several sons out of BNW Dirt Road, so we qualified for the pen (same sire) competition, as well as the individual competition. We were very excited with the results:
AGA Scale and Rail Contest
Average Daily Gain, Balancer – Champion Steer (BNW Dirt Road 6144D) – 5.16 lbs/day
Carcass Value, Balancer – Champion (BNW Granger 9126G) – USDA Choice, YG 2 and Reserve Champion (BNW Dirt Road 6144D) – USDA Choice, YG 2
Pen of Steers, Balancer – Champion Pen, (all BNW Dirt Road 6144D) – USDA Choice and YG 2
AGA Foundation Steer Challenge
Carcass Value – Champion Steer (BNW Granger 9126G)

The Heart of the Herd – The Females
If you have gone through and read the footnotes, you will notice that nearly every bull’s dam gets some mention. That’s because we truly love and value our females! Over the years, we have spent a lot of time, energy, and money, selecting the females that will continue to improve our herd. Always keeping our environment and end goals in mind, we have focused on breeding for moderate sized, efficient, and structurally sound cows. All the while, we have focused on improving their performance and carcass values, which they will pass on to their calves. To do all of this, we have been very strategic with our bull selection and mating, while at the same time gathering and reporting all data. One example is ultra-sounding our yearling heifers, along with the bull calves, which we have been doing for over 20 years.
Just like our Registered herd, our Commercial females undergo the same scrutiny. Our cows are expected to cover the country and breed back each year in a timely manner. They have to be good, moderate-sized mamas with udders and teats that hold up over time and they have to raise calves that will generate money for us.
As a result of our efforts, the quality of our heifer calves continues to improve. Each Fall after weaning, our normal routine is to evaluate and sort our heifer calves into 3 basic groups – Keepers, Sale replacement heifers and market calves. Twenty years ago, this was a “bottom heavy” split, with us usually only keeping the top 20-25 head and selling the rest at the Sale barn, for replacements or feeders. However, times have changed and so has our herd. We are getting “top-heavy” with more and more quality heifers. So, we have started offering several pens of heifers at our Bull Sale each year and they have been very well received. (See pages 18 and 19 for their listings and more information about their development.)
Dams of Dominance
Wilkinson Gelbvieh is #1 in Colorado
Each year the AGA recognizes the top-performing Gelbvieh and Balancer females and their breeders/owners through the Dam of Merit and the Dam of Distinction Program. Both programs recognize the cows that excel at what Gelbvieh and Balancer cows are known for – fertility, production and stayability. The Dam of Merit program is an elite group, with only 5.32% of the cows qualifying, but the Dam of Distinction is even more special – only 1% of active cows are able to meet this criteria, as it involves EIGHT years of production records.
For 2024, Wilkinson Gelbvieh was the #1 Owner of Dams of Dominance in Colorado, with 36 total – 32 Dams of Merit and 4 Dams of Distinction, and they were 11th in the Nation for BOTH owners and breeders. Considering the arid and brittle environment of SE Colorado, that is a true testament to the Gelbvieh cow.

Another one of the NWSS Pen of 3 Balancer bulls, this guy is a Power Bull! His performance, with a ton of eye appeal, makes him an exciting herdsire prospect. He’s out of the new Kansas bull and another Dam of Merit, who goes back to the old “PGS” cow, one of our favorite old cows. This cow strength shows up in positive maternal traits. He scanned well, with a big eye which matches up to his EPD carcass data. This bull will catch your eye with his overall dimension and structural soundness.

MAXIMUS 4162M
The youngest bull in the Sale, this one is out of a 12-year old cow who is still in the herd, doing her job. Look at his ratios for BW, WW and YW

Open Replacement Heifers
The heifers in this offering were chosen for their futures as cows. They were not chosen for the show ring. They are good structured out of good mamas – built for production. These heifers will be sold in groups of five (determined by Sale Day), with buyer’s choice for each group. That means the winning bid can take one, two or all of them. If they don’t take them all, we will continue to sell the remaining ones in the group until all are sold. Then the 2nd group will go the same way.
As a point of reference, all of our female calves enter our heifer development program in early December, but because of weather this year, these girls were a few weeks late getting started. With all of the snow and mud, they lost around 50 lbs from their weaning weights. However, once they got on feed, they have been doing really well. Once all of the heifers are ultrasounded in February, we make the decisions on which to cull, which to sell as replacements and which to keep in our herd. These 10 females were chosen from the replacement bunch with the intention of going out into other herds and making an impact for the buyer.

Gelbvieh and Balancer EPD Averages – Summer 2024
AGA’s EPD’s are based on a National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) collaboration with the American Simmental Association (ASA) and the American Red Angus (ARA). With this collaboration, our EPD’s are on the same base as these breeds, allowing Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle to be compared directly with Simmental and Red Angus cattle. Additionally, DNA testing is currently being incorporated into EPD’s as well. This is still a “work in progress,” as the AGA is learning how to best incorporate individual animals’ genomic testing into the years of hard data, to better calculate their EPDs. As a result, the EPD’s reported in this catalog may change again - before and/or after they are sold.

MATERNAL TRAITS
Calving ease direct (CED): Percent of unassisted births, when used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease.
Milk (Milk): Genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk, in pounds of weaning weight..
Stayability (STAY): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six year of age. The Stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity.
GROWTH TRAITS
Birth weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf.
Weaning weight (WW): Predicts expected difference, in pounds, for weaning weight.
Yearling weight (YW): Predicts expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight.
CARCASS TRAITS
Yield grade (YG): Predicts differences in yield grade score. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio.
Carcass weight (CW): Predicts differences in pounds of hot carcass weight.
Ribeye area (REA): Predicts differences in rib-eye area in inches. Greater ribeye areas are preferable.
Marbling (MB): Predicts differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye. Greater marbling numbers are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades.
INDEXES - Tools that allow you to select for several EPDs at once, making selections more efficient than selecting on one trait at a time. Some equate those traits into a dollar amount.
Total maternal (TM): Combines growth and milk information to predict weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters.
Feeder profit index (FPI): Represents how a bull’s progeny will perform in the feedlot, when sold on grade and yield. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. Maternal traits are not really a part of this index.
PAP (Pulmonary Artery Pressure) Testing
Quite a few of our customers run cattle at higher elevations, so we started PAP testing our bulls quite a few years ago. Dr. Jeremy Ley of Four Mile Clinic in Canon City has been doing the testing since we began. The following chart is a great tool to help evaluate the level of risk for specific PAP scores at a range of altitudes. (NOTE: These bulls have been raised and fed at home, which is at about 5500’ elevation).
PAP RISK FACTOR – based on a development and test elevation between 5500-6000 ft
