Paranhos Elderly House

The Project explores the idea of an "exemplary action", able to fuse new dynamics that tend to catalyze not only inform but also to influence new transformations and achievements over the territory in the City. It aims to design an urban equipment of significant programmatic and contextual complexity - Residential structure for the Elderly - a strategic urban area of the city: Paranhos

First Floor

Ground Floor

The functional organization of space is structured in a manner that accomodates elderly people in terms of accessibility, the ground and first floors are directily exposed to the sun light. The ground floor is a space for the services which also serves as an access to the building, however part of the floor is specifically reserved for rooms also with an entrance in between leading to the kitchen and technical room.

The upper floor is a meeting place where the elderly will be able to meet their family members and also interact with each other, with a spacious auditorioum which can be used for small events and information sharing and empowerment. The whole building is covered with a box creating a harmonious facade that blends with its environment

The area is structured and designed in a manner which makes it more lively, safe, resilient, sustainable and healthy and it is all in the hands of the urban designers to find ways which would improve the area which in turn must transform the city of Porto as whole. The sidewalks are more than just spaces in which people passes and nothing more, the idea was explored and implemented and now the sidewalks are spaces which encourages social activities and optional activities, while enjoying nature blended and merged with the artificial architectural elements. The incorporation of the new Metro line helps shape the area into a better place with the bus stops serving as more than just bus stops by allowing small local stores close by to boost the local economy.

Iceland Volcano Coffee Shop-Competition

The project required the design of a coffee shop that would be located at the base of the Hverfjall volcano. The new coffee shop would need to include facilities for a new visitor center and a small exhibition room that would give visitors information about the volcano’s history.

Hverfjall is in northern Iceland, it is a tephra cone or “tu ring” volcano. Located to the east of the volcanic Lake Mývatn, the volcanic explosion crater is 1 km wide and roughly 140 meters deep, and is a popular hiking destination. Visitors can easily access many parts of the crater via public hiking trails, where its ridges can reach up to 200 meters in height.

Mid-Atlantic Ridge Sun Orientation

The Orientation of the Sun played a crucial role in the decision making on the Volume of the building, The Volume of the building follows the path of the sun, the sun light is vital even though it appears for smaller portion of the day in certain seasons.

Mid-Atlantic Ridge Concept

Mid-Atlantic Ridge goes through Iceland, it is the only country that experiences this, therefore making it symbolical to the Iceland Nation. The building mimics the two separation of a single country making the building to have two volumes.
