uring a recent program development trip to Cordoba, Argentina, funded by a U.S. Department of State Capacity Building Grant, Ramapo College Associate Professor of Nursing Cristina Perez delivered a talk titled “Palliative Care in the United States.” The audience for this talk was approximately 60 nursing students and 10 professors at the Cordoba, Argentina branch of the Red Cross whose mission is to “Improve the lives of people, especially those who are in a situation of vulnerability, where their life, dignity or ability to live with a minimum of social and economic security is threatened.” In addition to their various services, the Red Cross also serves as an educational institution for nursing students. The talk by Perez was well received and developed into a fascinating discussion on the differences between palliative care approaches in the U.S. and Argentina, cultural realities and the complexities of the two healthcare systems. At Ramapo, Perez teaches a variety of courses including pathophysiology, pharmacology and research at the baccalaureate level and education
and research courses at the graduate level. She is a mentor to Hispanic nursing students across all programs and also teaches and mentors students as part of an educational partnership with a university in Ghana. Her research interests include Hispanic student barriers to success in nursing Associate Professor of Nursing Cristina Perez education, minority-focused health disparities, student success strategies in science and nursing curriculum development in higher education. She is a registered nurse with years of experience in adult/geriatric medical-surgical and hospice care nursing. Ramapo College will be offering an introductory course in Public Health and a corresponding study abroad opportunity to Argentina in spring 2020.
