Dear Ramapo College Graduate,

On behalf of the RCNJ Board of Trustees, faculty, and staff, I am honored to extend our sincere congratulations to you on your achievement as a member of the Ramapo College Class of 2025!

Today marks the culmination of your undergraduate journey and the launch of your next chapter. The past few years have been challenging. You persevered. You were victorious. You made a difference. Take a deep breath, look around, and enjoy this memorable moment.

As you move into the next chapter of your life, I encourage you to continue to be bold, be kind, and be good teammates. Boldly step outside of your comfort zone and commit to engaging with the histories, communities, and inquiries that surround you. Be kind and humble and commit to acknowledging that you do not know all the answers – the world is far more interesting this way. Be good teammates, and commit to cultivating relationships and fostering community by demonstrating empathy and respect.

Each one of you will make a unique impact, and I look forward to learning of and boasting about your service and success.

Congratulations, Roadrunner!

Sincerely,

GUEST

Welcome to Ramapo College’s 2025 Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony!

The audience is requested to stand during the Processional, the National Anthem, and the Alma Mater

Out of respect for all graduates, remain seated until the conclusion of the ceremony. The ceremony will officially conclude after the Recessional, which includes the graduates’ exit from the arena floor.

Graduates will be directed to exit Prudential Center via the M&M’s Tower. Guests will be directed to exit via the Citizens Tower or Lafayette Street entrance. Graduates and guests should meet on Mulberry Street.

Safety: Prudential Center does not allow guests to stand in aisles or by railings. If you are in one of these areas, you will be asked to move. We appreciate your cooperation with this policy.

Photographs: A professional photographer will photograph graduates as they greet President Jebb on stage and as they pose off stage. Within three days of the ceremony, graduates will receive both a secure link to view their photos online and hardcopy paper proofs in the mail. Contact Island Photography at 1-800-869-0908 or Custserv@islandphoto.com with questions.

A portion of the proceeds from the photography sales support the Class of 2025 Senior Legacy Drive, a time-honored Ramapo tradition that unites the graduating class in supporting The Fund for Ramapo College. Proceeds enable the College to attract and retain its most valuable assets — the students and faculty. Student scholarships, faculty fellowships, student/faculty research grants, and special College projects are some of the initiatives funded through The Fund for Ramapo College. For more information, visit ramapo.edu/giving/senior-legacy-drive

Congratulations to both you and your graduate! Enjoy the pomp & circumstance of the morning!

Craig J. Coughlin

The Honorable Assembly Speaker Craig J. Coughlin has served in the New Jersey General Assembly since 2010, representing the 19th Legislative District. He is the longest serving Speaker in the state’s history, now in his fourth term.

Highlights of the Speaker’s legislative tenure include raising the state’s minimum wage, delivering property tax relief, investing in childcare and mental health programs, increasing public school funding, ending surprise medical bills, and improving the state’s environmental remediation programs to provide a cleaner, safer future. These initiatives were made possible by the responsible state budgeting and fiscal stewardship during his time as Speaker.

Speaker Coughlin has spent his legislative career fighting for the working people of New Jersey. The first bill passed in his tenure as Speaker was the Equal Pay for Women Act. Under his leadership, the Democratic caucus has spearheaded numerous bills to provide tax relief for the people who need it most— middle-class families and seniors.

After securing passage of the ANCHOR program, the largest property tax relief program in state history at the time, Speaker Coughlin authored the StayNJ program, which will cut seniors’ property taxes in half. Coupled with expansions in prescription drug assistance programs of PAAD and Senior Gold, New Jersey seniors will see real savings and improved affordability.

The issue closest to Speaker Coughlin’s heart is the fight against hunger. His policy agenda has prioritized food security for New Jersey families and ending childhood hunger. He has worked to expand free school lunches and sponsored four expansive anti-hunger bill packages, including increasing aid to food banks by 500%, and creating a first-in-the-nation Office of Food Security Advocate. His ultimate goal, in concert with a coalition of community leaders on this issue, is the elimination of hunger in New Jersey by 2030. Speaker Coughlin stresses the importance of local engagement on food security to highlight the needs in every community—including his annual bowling fundraiser to benefit local food pantries in his district, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars and recruiting volunteers.

Speaker Coughlin is a lifelong resident of Middlesex County. He was born in Perth Amboy on January 31, 1958 and attended public schools in South Amboy. He attended St. John’s University for his B.A. (summa cum laude ’80) and J.D. (’83). Before running for the Assembly in 2009, Coughlin was a member of the South Amboy Board of Education and served as a South Amboy City Councilman for six years. Speaker Coughlin has also served in various legal capacities including as a municipal court judge, prosecutor and public defender.

Coughlin is a partner in Woodbridge-based law firm, Rainone, Coughlin, Minchello LLC. He and his wife, Letitia, live in Woodbridge and have three sons—Craig Jr., Vincent, and Nicholas. He is also the proud grandfather of Claire and Jameson.

All ceremony participants and attendees are to remain seated until the end of the Recessional.

GRADUATE REPRESENTATIVE

Class of 2025

Nikita Ashanti Hanover is a first-generation student from Guyana who is earning her degree in Social Work with a minor in Psychology. She is an Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) scholar, consecutive Dean’s list student, and the recipient of several awards, including the Sophomore Outstanding Leadership Award, Junior Outstanding Leadership Award, Emerging Leaders Award, and The Jerome Lee Award. Nikita is also a proud member of the Tri Alpha Honor Society and Phi Alpha Honor Society.

Throughout her academic journey, Nikita has demonstrated a deep commitment to advocacy, mentorship, and community engagement. She has made a lasting impact through her internships with the Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Compliance and the Civic & Community Engagement Center (WeCare Program), as well as her volunteer work with the Office of Violence Prevention.

During her time at Ramapo, Nikita has demonstrated exceptional leadership as President of the Students of Caribbean Ancestry organization, a resident assistant, peer facilitator, and as an EOF mentor and academic assistant for first-year EOF students.

Nikita’s involvement and leadership also extend beyond campus. She strives to be a beacon of change, bridging gaps in mental health access and policy reform for marginalized communities. As she prepares to pursue her master’s degree in Social Work with a clinical concentration, Nikita remains committed to advancing research on generational trauma, financial challenges, and mental health disparities for the Caribbean & South American diaspora. Overall, Nikita expresses that her goal as a clinical social worker is to provide a listening ear and be a voice for the voiceless.

THE FRED AND FLORENCE THOMASES AWARD

The Fred and Florence Thomases Faculty Research and Development Award was established in 1975 as an endowment from founding trustee Florence Thomases and her husband, Fred Thomases.

The award is given annually to honor one or two faculty members who demonstrate excellence in teaching, excellence in scholarship, outstanding contribution to the College and community, and outstanding fulfillment of professional responsibility. Academic Deans, in consultation with faculty and students, make nominations for the award to the Provost, who reviews the nominations and forwards three names to the President for the final selection.

GRAND MARSHAL

The 2025 recipient of The Fred and Florence Thomases Faculty Research and Development Award serves as this morning’s Grand Marshal and is carrying the Ramapo College Mace.

All ceremony participants and attendees are to remain seated until the end of the Recessional.

ACADEMIC HERALDRY

The wearing of caps, gowns and hoods at college and university functions dates back to the earliest days of the oldest universities, when they were first worn by monks and students to keep warm in the 12th century castles and halls of learning.

GOWN. The bachelor’s gown has pointed sleeves. The master’s gown has oblong sleeves, open at the wrist. The doctor’s gown has bell-shaped sleeves.

HOODS. Hoods are lined in silk in the color or colors of the institution granting the degree. If the institution has more than one color, the second color is shown through the use of chevrons. The binding or edge of the hood is usually made of velvet in a color designating the field in which the degree was granted.

MORTARBOARD

. The traditional mortarboard (cap) is made from the same material as the gown. Doctor’s caps may be made of velvet and may have tassels of gold or in the color of the wearer’s degree. Graduates of some institutions wear soft caps.

Each baccalaureate graduate of Ramapo College is in a black gown, cap with tassel, and stole. Tassel colors indicate the individual graduate’s academic discipline.

Ramapo College is proud to share that this year’s caps and gowns are made from 100% postconsumer recycled plastic bottles. An average of 25 plastic bottles was used to manufacture each cap and gown.

MACE. The mace symbolizes the Office of the President and is carried by a faculty member who generally leads the Processional for the three major academic ceremonies: Opening Convocation, Undergraduate Commencement, and Graduate Programs Commencement. The Ramapo College Mace, created in 2002, features Ramapo College’s seal on a silver medallion. Ramapo College’s mace is hexagonally shaped, hand-crafted from solid natural cherry, and custom turned by hand.

All ceremony participants and attendees are to remain seated until the end of the Recessional.

LATIN HONORS

Latin Honors are awarded to undergraduate students who have met the criteria below as set forth by the College.

Latin Honors are awarded to undergraduates who have achieved a cumulative grade point average (G.P.A.) at Ramapo College as follows:

* Cum Laude (between 3.5 and 3.699)

All ceremony participants and attendees are to remain seated until the end of the Recessional.

Ramapo we sing to you.

Ramapo with pride.

Praise filled voices raised on high fill your mountain side.

In the time we’ve spent together we have come to learn to have dignity, a mind that’s free and celebrate humanity.

Ramapo, as years go by. Ramapo with love.

Even when you’re far away, forever we’ll be one.
