U

gyen Wangmo is the founder and CEO/Editor-in-Chief of FORWARD Fashion Toronto™, a Toronto-based fashion publication. Her leadership skills and innovative mindset have introduced a creative approach to the fashion landscape of Toronto. Ugyen’s expertise extends beyond traditional fashion content creation. She is also a proficient AI Content Creator and AI Prompt Engineer. She utilizes artificial intelligence to redefine the methods of content creation and delivery, bringing a unique blend of creativity and technology to the fashion industry. Ugyen is significantly involved in the digital transformation within fashion content creation. She understands the importance of staying ahead of the rapidly evolving fashion industry. She leverages digital technologies to drive innovation and efficiency in content creation. A forward-thinking leader in the fashion industry, Ugyen combines her passion for fashion with technology to create impactful and innovative content. Her recent launch of UWANGMO™ attests to her commitment and visionary approach as she challenges the conventional boundaries and continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in fashion content creation. Additionally, the launch of Ama’s Loom—an AI-powered fashion brand that embraces the vibrant textile artistry of Bhutan - is in keeping with her charge to venture deeper into this journey.

challenges have you experienced in the process of creating this? WANGMO: FORWARD Fashion Toronto™ is my sanctuary where my passion for fashion and writing comes to life. And Toronto, for me, has always been this bubbling pot of style and substance, a place where cultures mix and inspirations flourish. Yet, it felt like our city’s fashion voice was drowned out on the global stage. That needed to change. FORWARD was my way of amplifying our unique style story, showcasing what Toronto truly had to offer. But let’s be honest, carving our space amidst the towering giants of fashion was no less than arriving at an elite soirée without an invite. But FORWARD wasn’t crafted to be just another glossy cover. Instead, those very talents overshadowed, yet incredible, fuel FORWARD’s soul. And with every story we tell, I’m reminded that crafting dreams into reality is possible when armed with tenacity, passion, and enthusiasm. RAINE: In what ways do you think AI will push the envelope for fashion? What impact do you think AI will have on bespoke fashion? WANGMO: To me, fashion and AI are like old friends chatting over a cup of tea—unexpected but beautifully harmonious. AI isn’t merely a tool—it’s a collaborative muse, weaving fresh dimensions into design, crafting, and storytelling. As I see it, AI will push bespoke fashion beyond custom-fit attire into deeply personalized

RAINE: When did you first discover your passion for writing? Who were your earliest influencers? UGYEN WANGMO: Let’s put it this way, ever since I can remember, reading has been my gateway to my grand adventures, meeting with fascinating characters— from everyday people to fictional friends and learning and exploring without boundaries. It is hard not to fall in love with words, the images they can paint and the power of words when they are strung together. So naturally, writing also became a part of me— me starting to write journals or try to experiment with the musicality of sentences when words come together in perfect accordance. As for my earliest influencers, it began with the sleepy town of Malgudi. Just as R.K. Narayan painted vivid imagery of Malgudi’s daily life, I strive to capture the essence of Toronto’s fashion pulse. The way Maupassant enlightened readers about the depths of the human psyche, I endeavour to uncover layers of fashion’s relationship with society. And like W. Somerset Maugham showcased diverse human experiences, I unveil the myriad faces of fashion, transcending geographical bounds with the aid of AI. Drawing inspiration from my journey in the vibrant world of Toronto’s fashion industry, it’s almost like flipping through the pages of an enthralling novel. My fascination has always been akin to the spell cast by a riveting book. Both worlds have captivated me, from the distinct lines of a tailored ensemble to the mesmerizing tales spun by authors. In much the same way an author brings a fictional town to life, I envisioned and brought FORWARD Fashion Toronto™ to the fashion lovers of Toronto. With UWANGMO™, I aim to bridge the tales of yesteryears with today’s digital renaissance, challenging and redefining the very fabric of fashion content creation. Because, in every stitch and story, there lies an adventure waiting to unfold. RAINE: What led to the creation of FORWARD Fashion? What

experiences. It will propose designs born from a harmonious blend of history and futuristic insights, revolutionize material choices for style and sustainability and democratize the luxury of tailor-made garments. This isn’t about replacing the soulful touch of fashion with machinery; it’s about using AI to make fashion more intimate, immersive, and authentic to our individual stories. And as we venture deeper into this journey at FORWARD Fashion Toronto™ and UWANGMO™, I’m passionately driven by one belief: even as we embrace technology, the heart and essence of fashion must always remain undeniably human. RAINE: In what ways do you think fashion, AI, and the Metaverse might blend to disrupt the status quo? WANGMO: I see a vibrant canvas of possibilities in the heart of fashion, AI, and the Metaverse. This isn’t just about clothes; it’s about redefining identity and self-expression. Bespoke Digital Fashion: Imagine strolling into a digital boutique in the Metaverse where every piece feels like it’s been waiting for you. It’s not just about size or colour; it’s a deeper connection, an unspoken understanding of your style. Trend Forecasting on Steroids: Through the lens of AI, I see patterns and rhythms in fashion that were previously hidden.

Guilt-Free Glamour: The Metaverse allows us to revel in fashion’s allure without the tangible footprint. It’s where eco-conscious meets elegance. Collaborating with Code: Pairing my design instincts with AI isn’t about automation or machines replacing the muse, but rather it’s about amplification and working in harmony. Fluid Fashion: In this digital domain, fashion isn’t static; your attire is an extension of your aura. The outfit morphs with your mood, emotions, and world. It’s fashion with feelings. Fashion Education and Upskilling: The Metaverse is more than just a digital escape—it can be an expansive space for learning. Virtual tutors, interactive design labs, and virtual ateliers can nurture the next generation of designers, making high-end fashion insights accessible to all. Breaking Geographic Barriers: Everyone has a front-row seat in a virtual world. The Metaverse knows no borders. From Toronto’s urban sprawl to the tranquil shores of Bali, everyone gets a frontrow view. With initiatives like UWANGMO™, I’m narrating this vision into reality. We’re at the frontier of an era where fashion isn’t just about wearing but truly embodying our most authentic selves.

VONTELLE

FASHION EYEWEAR Bringing Unique Fit and Fashion Into Focus

T

he concept for Vontélle was born out of a need of both founders Tracy Vontélle Green and Nancey Harris. They wanted vibrant patterns, better fitting glasses, and to purchase from a Black-owned brand. When they did not find what they wanted, they created it. The spectacular handcrafted designs are new to the eyewear industry and include a wider bridge for the nose, a longer temple for a comfortable fit on your ears, and a wider lens to fit over high cheekbones. The goal is to change how you see and be seen. Tracy called Nancey (her friend since college) in June 2019 to complain about losing her glasses. She went to look for a replacement and had two issues. 1. They all look the same.

So, I made a list of entrepreneurs who birthed companies out of necessity and a missing component (Untuck It (shirts), Bevel (razor), Ruby Love (period panties), Peloton (exercise bike), Beats (headphones), Sundial/Shea Moisture (lotion/ hair products), etc. All these products already existed, but they each found a missing component and used that to build multi-million-dollar companies.

out within such a crowded space? VONTÉLLE: Our patterns and our sizes are our secret. While there are many eyewear companies, none of them cater to or create for the diverse face.

Vontélle Eyewear is following a similar path by providing a new solution to the eyewear industry and working with our community. The corporate vision for Vontélle is to become the leading African American woman-owned luxury eyewear design company.

Many ethnicities (African Americans, Hispanics, Biracial, Asian, Hawaiian, Japanese, German, Jewish, Polish, India/Bangladesh, etc), have issue - They wear rubber bands on the end of their glasses as it hurts. If the glasses are too tight, they rest on the lymphnode behind your ears-which causes headaches.

RAINE: Beyond a certain amount of functional necessity - making it a large market by default - eyewear is a very broad market. What is the secret to making your products and collections stand

If you look at many eyeglass wearers, the temples (arms) are short and often don’t go over the ear. Moreover, the average Pupil Distance (PD) for most European ethnicities is 56 - 60. All other ethnicities have

2. They didn’t fit well. She was tired of having indentations on her cheeks and nose. Nancy commented that she had lost a pair of sunglasses as well. They started doing research after that call in June. How to make glasses, manufacturers, black designers, etc. In July 2019 they said, “Let’s try to do this.” Nancey booked both their tickets in August 2019 to attend an eyewear expo during Paris Fashion Week in 2019. RAINE: How did this spark, and expand over time and enhance the journey to where you are now? VONTÉLLE: Our trip to Paris was an eye-opener (ironically). We saw thousands of glasses and met eyewear manufacturers and designers, but NOT one Black-owned or Black Women-owned designer or manufacturer of eyewear. This served as our “aha moment” – this was the reason that glasses did not fit properly on our faces. We did not have representation in the industry.

We decided to design and create better-fitting eyewear with a focus on adding textiles and patterns. If not us, then who?

hances the creative and personal identity of those wearing your products?

RAINE: What is the most important factor when infusing glasses with enough stylistic flourish allowing them to transcend beyond a necessary accessory?

VONTÉLLE: Vontélle eyewear stands out. Everyone who wears our products do so because they want to be more creative, love color, culture, and want to make a statement. They want to wear eyewear that matters…and buy from a black female-owned company.

VONTÉLLE: After George Floyd and Black Lives Matter, there has been a real transition to celebrate our heritage – even more so. Vontélle does that with our eyewear. We are the only brand that includes ethnic designs in our eyewear. Making them not only a beautiful accessory but a statement piece. The National Institute of Health’s National Eye Institute reports that African Americans and Hispanics are more likely to have cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy than any other ethnic group. This makes it more difficult to wear contacts, so properly fitting eyewear is crucial. RAINE: Vontélle has been able to develop professional relationships. Collections with other brands and intellectual property throughout the business. When working with another brand, what is the most important element when developing a product/collection that maintains a certain amount of synergy between all parties? VONTÉLLE: If you love patterns and color, you want to work with us. Our Nickelodeon collection does just that- you see the character and color in our glasses – they are not boring, and the kids love them. For example, SpongeBob has a sponge pattern on them. Baby Shark has sharks on them. We have embarked on some new partnerships for adults and we come in as ourselves - and our partners love it. They tell us what shapes they want and/or what vibe they want to create, and we collaborate from that point. We use their motif or brand colors to dictate the finished products. RAINE: How do you hope your brand en-

Vontélle understands eyewear is a medical necessity! Yet there are less than a handful of Black eyewear makers.

Considering 164 million American adults wear glasses, Vontélle Eyewear is poised to disrupt the industry. With the right partnerships and capital, the goals of the company are limitless. RAINE: You are given the choice to pick one favorite product or product line from across the brands, and lifespan. What are you choosing and why? VONTÉLLE: From Vontélle, all our eyewear is spectacular, but our Rwanda Wayfarer is dear to my heart as it was the first pair we designed and our best seller. It has a full pattern on the front and just elevates ANY outfit. RAINE: Who are your dream brand or individual collaborators for a product line? VONTÉLLE: For a men’s line, Lebron James or Tom Ford. I would love to work with Donna Karan, she’s also from NY. I also like Rachel Roy and can’t forget Oprah & Gail; they wear the most fabulous glasses now. RAINE: What is some advice you can give

Raine Magazine | Vol 40

in funding a creative career or business? VONTÉLLE: The first step we recommend is to ask questions. Ask everyone “How did you do that? Where should I go to get this?” Do not be afraid to ask. LinkedIn is your best friend. You can find a great deal of information using search engines. Moreover, do not take “no” or “I do not know” for an answer. If you want or need information, keep asking. Do your research and get the knowledge and answers you seek. Lastly, ensure you have a business plan, review the numbers - actual potential ROI (return on investment) and reach out to other start-up business owners in your industry. There is the fun part of the business, which is probably what drew you there, and there are the necessary business needs. RAINE: Do you have any further exciting projects coming up? VONTÉLLE:We now have 3 licensing deals (Nickelodeon, 50th Hip Hop, and Bouffant & Broken Hearts by Kendra Dandy). In Saks Fifth Ave, they carry curated 10 SKUs. We have 4 new collaboration collections. Harlem Haberdashery x Vontélle, Earline Sims collection x Vontélle, Naevia’s Magic Glasses x Vontélle, Deemed x Vontélle, Divine Collection for our sororities & fraternities. We are creating a new collection for National Vision (they own the America’s Best chain of stores). Our most important project and one we are most proud of is giving the gift of sight to homeless families. We have partnered with WIN (Women in Need), the largest provider of family homeless shelters and supportive housing in New York City, and local optometrists to offer free eye exams. We are working with vision companies to donate free eyeglasses and the Steve & Marjorie Harvey Foundation. Provideing a grant which pays for the prescription lenses for women, men, and children in need.

purposeful fashion The Brand Metri Holliday artfully blends color science, fashion, and spiritual symbolism to create exquisite designs that evoke the profound emotions of love, calm, and joy. They believe that colors and symbolism have the power to deeply influence our well-being and emotions, and through their meticulously crafted silk scarves, they aim to infuse these positive sensations into people’s lives.

The Designer Metri Holliday is a Washington DC-based designer. After spending 17 years in the corporate world, she decided to reinvent herself and follow her passion. All her mulberry silk scarves are custom designed and made in the USA. Scarves are hand rolled and printed in Italy. RAINE: How did the burnout you experienced in your corporate job lead you to create Metri Holliday scarves? What are some ways you avoid burnout now? METRI HOLLIDAY: The burnout I experienced in my corporate job was a major life-changing event for me. I loved what I did. I was going at a fast pace - and even though I was doing what I enjoyed, ironically the one thing I completely ignored was me. I learned this the hard way after I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). As I was working with Dr. Teitelbaum to help heal my body, I learned the importance of our thoughts and emotions. Not just from a spiritual perspective, but from a scientific perspective.

optimal brain health. I have changed the way I exercise. I loved doing intense cardio. Now I do enjoy a combination of activities like yoga, light cardio, leisurely walks, meditation, and resistance training. Nutrition – it is also very important. I pay closer attention to the food combinations and timing of the food. I eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains every day. Sleep – I make sure to get at least 8-9 hours of sleep. With CFS, it’s very hard to get quality sleep despite feeling fatigued all the time. Setting boundaries - yup! Setting boundaries with people, work, etc. The key is to prioritize yourself. Ask yourself if the company of this person or a particular activity will drain your energy or help your energy. My favorite self-care activity is practicing DNRS as I find it fun. RAINE: What is the meaning behind your scarves’ designs? HOLLIDAY: I tell a story with each design. Every scarf has a different message in it. For example, in “I Am Enough”, I used earthy tones and animal patterns. Earthy tones have a soothing effect. Animals used in the design are grounding and remind one of connection to the earth. The message of the scarf is to remember that we need to ground ourselves so we can lay a solid foundation. After all, you can only grow as much as your foundation will allow you. So why not lay a strong foundation? The name of the scarf is a positive affirmation we are all enough just the way we are. The goal is to shift our energy to something more positive and the story behind each scarf serves as that reminder to the wearer.

health, I discovered a greater sense of self-confidence and self-acceptance. Through my own experiences, I hope others can gain the courage and inspiration to explore their own creative sides or whatever brings them joy. By nurturing all aspects of their well-being, they can cultivate a strong foundation of self-awareness, self-acceptance, and resilience. RAINE: What was the biggest surprise you have experienced in building your business or career? HOLLIDAY: Developing your own product is harder than taking already created products (drop shipping or white labeling) and selling them in the market. For me, the biggest surprise has been around brand identity. The fashion industry is very competitive and consumer demand changes quite often. People are so used to expecting new products every day or every season. Given that I design for emotions and feelings, which are not seasonal, I don’t follow these seasonal trends - which makes it a bit harder. So I have to focus more on building a brand and educating consumers on what I am about. I continue to work on it. Competing with established brands, emerging designers, and fast fashion vying for consumer attention is challenging. RAINE: What words of wisdom can you share with others on a similar journey? HOLLIDAY: I took a big leap of faith when I decided to change the direction of my life. So I have what I call a “leap of faith” checklist: Get curious – learn new things, new ways of doing the same things. Stay curious. You never know what you might create.

Dr. Teitelbaum referred me to a training by Annie Hopper. It’s called Dynamic Neural Retraining System (DNRS), which was a game changer for me. It’s a structured program one follows for 6 months and the results were amazing. I still practice it. As I did more research on how to rewire your limbic system, I was inspired to create my brand as I wanted to draw attention to our thoughts, feelings, and how they influence the choices we make. To me, fashion is fun and easy. There is plenty of research that shows that color affects our mood, and how we choose to dress is influenced by how we feel. So I combined these concepts of color psychology and fashion psychology to create what I like to think are mindset scarves.

RAINE: What drew you to create purpose-driven fashion? HOLLIDAY: I wanted to draw attention to our thoughts and emotions and how they influence how we perceive ourselves and others. You can imagine how we limit ourselves every moment. However, you can change that by becoming more aware of what might be holding you back. It’s easy to remind ourselves to do this when we have something to look at and feel. Something that will remind us to set a positive intent instead. So I created these mindset scarves to serve as a reminder of the kind of energy you would like to invite into your day and have fun while doing so as the patterns and silk used are simply luxurious.

Save money and make sure you have a system that works – learn to manage your finances well and find a balance between what your heart desires and what your mind is telling you.

Some people inspire others through books, talks, etc. I chose to do it through fashion.

RAINE: How has focusing more on your holistic health changed your life? What do you hope others can gain by doing so?

Start getting clear on your story – this helps with branding and marketing.

Burnout is tricky and there is a lack of awareness around how debilitating it can be. Healing conditions like CFS require a lifestyle change. To manage my burnout, I have changed the way I do things a lot. I approach things from a holistic perspective. Exercise – it is very important as it stimulates the release of several neurotransmitters associated with maintaining

HOLLIDAY: Focusing more on holistic health has had a profound impact on my life, allowing me to embrace my creative and artistic side in ways I never thought possible. Prioritizing my overall well-being, including physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects, has brought about a remarkable transformation. As I focused on improving my mental and emotional

Be ready to see yourself in a different light and adopt a positive mindset - some people will judge you no matter what you do. What matters the most is if you know how you see yourself. Become more aware of your thoughts and how they are influencing you. Watch out for stress. Carve some time out for self-care.

Be consistent and show up for yourself – don’t make working on yourself or that idea you had a one-time thing and then forget about it. Surround yourself with supportive people that will help build you. The goal should be to eliminate or at least limit the company or activities that drain your energy levels.

RAINE MAGAZINE: Why did you pursue a career in fashion design?

RAINE: Why did you decide to write a memoir? How do you hope it will affect readers?

MARLÈNE P. NAICKER: Serendipity! One minute at a fashion show and my mind was spellbound by the accessories. Looking back now it all makes sense: from my mad-hatter adventures as a child, to books which I immersed myself in as a teenager, and finally as an adult where for over two decades, I had been collecting fashion maga-

But surprisingly, nothing in those words today feel helpless – rather even in the darkest moments, I sought to find the light, sought to find one’s way back. If there is one takeaway from the book, it’s about finding acceptance. Life will give and life will take – it’s a constant ebb and flow- and it’s only in acceptance of our fate that we find ourselves. RAINE: Why did you decide to implement blockchain technology in your company? NAICKER: As a luxury fashiontech brand, transparency and authenticity are pillars of our universe. We work with premium French heritage suppliers, spinning collections of the finest quality, craftsmanship, and exclusivity. By using blockchain, we celebrate our artisanal craftsmen, instilling trust in customers. With our custom hologram keys, each product links to their digital twins, offering unparalleled authenticity and security. NAICKER: The heart of our brand beats to the tune of celebrating life’s precious moments, memories, and experiences. Our name evokes the magical nostalgia of my childhood and represents youthfulness, playfulness, and curiosity. We cherish the contrasts and find beauty in the darkest corners of existence. Inspired by legendary icons, our collections capture the essence of the human experience through creations with unrivaled craftsmanship, offering a one-of-a-kind luxury experience. RAINE: What was the biggest surprise you have experienced in building your business or career? NAICKER: The biggest surprise has been the disingenuous and bitter rivalry in the top end of luxury. Unexpected. But – significant learning experience. RAINE: What words of wisdom can you share with others on a similar journey? NAICKER: Find yourself, challenge yourself, and maintain your sense of curiosity. Embrace discipline, for even during the toughest moments, you’ll unearth the secret of a reset button, whether it’s a walk in the forest, hugging trees, or doing a killer workout. Don’t be afraid to seek help when needed. RAINE: Do you have any exciting plans coming up? NAICKER: We are debuting our collections at NY Fashion Week Flying Solo Indie Event in September 2023. Fundraising with Sydecar, podcasts, and we hope to see our collections in top luxury boutiques from NY to LA. Watch out for Muldooneys! Photo Credits: All photo credits are to Muldooneys.

ART

DYLAN MA

Dylan Martinez earned his MFA in Glass at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana. He has studied with master craftsmen across the U.S. and abroad. His artwork is regularly exhibited throughout the US and internationally. Dylan’s artwork is held in several international public and private collections, most nota-

bly, the Imagine Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida. Martinez has been featured in several publications. Dylan designs and creates all his work by hand in his studio in Bingen, Washington. Dylan’s artwork often examines the boundaries of human perception. His work challenges the viewer’s expectations through the

manipulation of light, space, and the optical properties of glass. While steeped in the traditional techniques in glass making, he constantly strives to discover novel approaches to exploit the material. His hyper-realistic water bag sculptures often trick viewers into believing the glass objects are water-filled plastic bags.

ARTINEZ

Blowing the Art World Away

With his latest series, Dylan introduces colorinto his work for the first time in a few years with his solid sculpted Pac-Man-inspired ghosts that lure the viewer in with their simplistic design and ethereal luminosity RAINE: What made you sign up for the introductory art course in glass in college?

Even if it was a requirement, why glass and not other forms of art (like drawing or pottery)? DYLAN MARTINEZ: I remember walking by the studio one day and seeing someone working with hot glass for the first time and I knew I had to try it. The material is just so exciting. There aren’t many universities that

offer glass-blowing, so I recognized what a rare opportunity it was. As a science major, I somehow got lucky and snagged a spot in the class which was usually reserved for art students. I was never good at 2-D works like drawing or painting, but I excelled at ceramics and wood class in high school. The fire, molten

glass, danger, and difficulty were intriguing, and glass also has so many alluring properties. RAINE: Why did you fall in love with glass and decide to pursue a career as a gaffer? MARTINEZ: I fell in love with the material and the process immediately. I grew up working with my dad who was a master stonemason, so I knew early on how to work with my hands. Working with glass opened a door for me to continue my passion for making things while also exploring my own ideas and creativity for the first time. I love the challenge of glass; the material requires every bit of your attention. From the first gather of hot glass, until it’s put away in the annealer to cool down, you must be completely focused, problem-solve quickly, and be very intentional with every move. Almost every mistake is evident in the final piece, so each sculpture is an artifact of my mastery of the material in those moments of making. It still challenges me 16 years later! RAINE: Where do you find the inspiration for your pieces? MARTINEZ: I’ve always been curious about the world around me and how it all worksthat’s why I studied science in college. I find

my best inspiration when I’m fully present, open, and curious. When I’m out on a hike and I’m fully tuned into nature and all its beauty, there is such a good rhythm that flows through me. The ideas flow, good questions come up. The same thing can happen when I blow glass- I get in this cadence with the glass and sometimes I will see something new or try something different that leads to a whole new idea to explore. It’s more about living authentically and playfully. If I take care to do my best daily, personally, and professionally, in my downtime ideas often bubble up seemingly out of nowhere. It’s also critical that I try new things often both in my work and my daily life. It’s good to have a beginner’s mindset. It’s easy to get lost in mastering techniques and you begin to design work that other makers appreciate. Often outsiders to the craft enjoy completely different aspects than a maker does- so it’s good for me to step back from my ideals of perfection when I’m making. RAINE: You’ve studied with master craftsmen in the US and abroad; how has immersing yourself in these experiences benefited your art and you as a person? MARTINEZ: Working with a variety of people from different walks of life is invaluable. You get to see different artistic practices, techniques, and philosophies. As one of my

mentors put it, “Learn it the way that I do it. If later you decide your way is better, you can always go back.” I like this advice and it helps me engage my curiosity to try new things often both personally and professionally. I don’t have a philosophy of “my way is best,” so I’m constantly striving to learn from anyone, anywhere. I’m always looking to add another “tool” to the toolbox. RAINE: Why are you so curious about the natural world, and how has this influenced your art? MARTINEZ: Ironically, my work is not flora or fauna. The natural world influences my life and art by how it affects me. Not only does it ground and recharge me, but it’s also so full of wonder. I see it everywhere and it doesn’t seem like many other people do. Maybe that’s part of my job as an artist to manifest the wonder I find in the world in a way that allows others to see it. RAINE: What words of wisdom can you share with someone on a similar journey? MARTINEZ: Make good art! Make lots of it and do some weird stuff. Get it out there, be patient, and keep tight records of all the work you create and send to galleries. Be

careful whose advice you follow. Trust your gut. Not many artists make a living on their art, so have realistic expectations. Be happy with what you have while working for what you want. Focus on being a better version of yourself every day. Let your progress be your motivation. Discipline and obsession will take you further than talent ever will. Slow and steady is the best way. Challenge yourself often and push yourself outside your comfort zone. I was a craftsman for ten years before I was exposed to art and sculpture. I enjoyed making utilitarian work, but my designs were stagnant. As I began making work from ideas and stopped making my old work my voice began to break through, and I finally began developing a style of my own. It’s important to really ask yourself questions like: why do you make at all? Why in this medium? Are there other materials that suit this idea better than the medium I’m best at? Being an artist is all about the journey and not the destination. So, explore. The world begins at the edge of your comfort zone.

Bringing The Inside Out

BILAL

REHMAN INTERIOR DESIGNER As CEO of his Design Studio & Gallery based out of Houston, Texas, 23-year-old luxury interior designer and content creator Bilal Rehman has skyrocketed to social media fame for his unapologetic and comedic takes on design and spaces, He is leading the next generation of luxury interior design. Bilal takes an all-encompassing approach, focusing on every detail of the space to make sure it is cohesive and tells a story. Bilal’s commercial projects have included plastic surgery offices that strived for a less “medical office” feel, law offices meant to stand out and have a stylish atmosphere, and retail stores that promised to leave their customers feeling at the height of luxury.

RAINE: What was the moment that sparked your creative passion for interior design? BILAL REHMAN: I’ve always had an eye for creating beautiful spaces. I practically grew up rearranging my parents’ house a hundred times and getting yelled at for it! But I believe the first time I realized not only the importance of interior design but also the impact it had was when I was around 12 years old, and my parents separated. As you can imagine it took a toll on them and I watched both my parents struggle emotionally. I made it my mission to completely transform their spaces in the hopes a different environment would help them through this tough time, and it did. Watching them both slowly adapt to their new environment and seeing their spirits rise was one of the greatest joys I’ve ever experienced. Right then and there I knew this was something special that I wanted to share with as many people as I could. RAINE: How did this expand over time and blossom into a full career within the industry? REHMAN: Growing up with immigrant parents, pursuing a career in interior design seemed out of reach. The pressure as the oldest sibling led me to work hard and secure a scholarship for computer engineering. Although rewarding, I knew it wasn’t my true calling. After an internship at an Interior Design studio, I climbed the ranks to become a senior designer in five years. Balancing computer engineering studies with my full-time design career was tough, but I made the leap and switched majors. After leaving my previous firm, I founded my own company, Bilal Rehman Studio. Within the same month, a TikTok video went viral, garnering an insane 15+ million views and half a million followers. Now, I’m living my passion with no regrets!

RAINE: How did the projects you worked on expand stylistically and creatively to give both yourself and your clients an idea of your creative voice as an interior designer? REHMAN: At the core of all of my work are two key principles: creating experience-based designs and my personal motto, elevating everyday experiences. My goal is to craft stunning spaces that engage all the senses while maintaining practicality. Personally, my interior style revolves around a combination of white, black, chrome, and bold colors. While many of my Houston clients may not have encountered my style before (unlike my clients in LA, Miami, and NYC), this element of surprise often sparks excitement in them. I believe in constant growth and evolution, learning from my clients as much as they learn from me, which ultimately leads to the creation of truly incredible personalized spaces. RAINE: How does working for clients in different industries impact your mindset when working on a particular design project? REHMAN: Understanding my clients’ fields of work is, in my opinion, a crucial aspect of my design process. It allows me to grasp the unique stresses they face throughout their day, which heavily influences the kind of environment they desire to come home to.

For instance, many of my clients work in the medical field, enduring 1216 hour days within sterile, cold, high-intensity environments. As a result, returning to a calm, warm, and vibrant home becomes a significant priority in their lives. Knowing these details empowers me to create spaces that serve as an oasis of tranquility, providing them with much-needed solace and rejuvenation after their demanding workdays. RAINE: How does working for clients in both residential and commercial projects impact the number of stakeholders and resources available in creating the most appealing final product possible for all involved?

this new strategy, we created our first TikTok video. To our amazement, it went viral, accumulating 15 million views and still growing. By shattering the boundaries of the traditional “young professional” image and unapologetically presenting my true self online and in real life, I gained a deeper respect from my clients. RAINE: You are given an effectively blank canvas to shape and design however you want. What are some of the advantages and challenges in this scenario?

REHMAN: Working on residential and commercial projects involves different dynamics in terms of stakeholders and resources, impacting the process of creating an appealing final product. In residential projects, homeowners’ preferences are central, making decisions more streamlined. In contrast, commercial projects involve a broader range of stakeholders with diverse opinions, requiring extensive coordination.

REHMAN: Designing with a blank canvas offers designers like myself unparalleled creative freedom, allowing the chance to explore endless possibilities and push the boundaries of traditional aesthetics. It provides an opportunity for highly personalized design, tailoring the space precisely to the client’s preferences and unique needs. Striking the right balance between aesthetic appeal and functionality is paramount. Overall, it’s an incredible opportunity to create remarkable and tailor-made spaces.

RAINE: What is the decision-making process behind choosing what pieces/collections or collaborations can be sold online individually as an extension of your business brand/footprint?

RAINE: You are given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to pick whatever existing space you want and create a redesign project to your own specifications. What space are you choosing and why?

REHMAN: Curating our collection is a source of immense pride. We have a deep appreciation for small artists from all corners of the world as well as craftsmen. They form the backbone of our industry but often go unnoticed and underappreciated. Every item in the gallery is chosen with utmost care, reflecting the same high standards I would use in any of my projects. I aim to break the misconception that luxury and high-quality pieces are unattainable or come with exorbitant price tags. Our goal is to make extraordinary, artistic pieces accessible to everyone, ensuring that beauty and craftsmanship can be appreciated without constraints.

REHMAN: Designing the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel would be a dream come true for me. I envision giving the space a fresh take on its beloved pink and green vintage style while preserving its sophisticated elegance. Every space, no matter how iconic, deserves a little facelift over time. My goal would be to achieve an elevated vintage look that resonates with the hotel’s legacy and charm. It would be an absolute honor and I would seize the opportunity without hesitation.

RAINE: What are your hopes for expanding the online storefront in the future? REHMAN: The online storefront for Bilal Rehman Gallery is currently live! We recognize that many of our followers are situated outside of Houston - but still desire to explore and purchase items from our carefully curated collection. RAINE: How does the utilization of social media and other platforms enhance getting your work out there to the widest possible audience? REHMAN: When I launched Bilal Rehman Studio, I initially handled everything on my own like most entrepreneurs. However, a significant realization dawned on me when my sister Maya, a marketing genius, reviewed my social media presence. My social media presence lacked authenticity and failed to showcase my true self, style, personality, and opinions.

RAINE: What is the most unique design element item that you have included as part of a design project for a space? REHMAN: We are currently working on an awe-inspiring project: an Italian villa-inspired new build. Inside this magnificent home, the centerpiece is a 144-inch long oval-shaped custom dining table made of solid travertine. This stunning masterpiece is supported by three-column fluted legs. RAINE: Do you have any further exciting projects coming up? REHMAN: I am thrilled to announce the upcoming official grand opening of Bilal Rehman Gallery! This is affirming our mission to create an immersive, one-of-a-kind space that sets us apart from anything else in Houston. Our two immersive experience rooms are designed to spice up your Instagram feed. Our gallery showcases hand-curated pieces from around the world, many of whom are small artists and craftsmen.

SUN KISSED SAFARI WITH NOVA LORRAINE

TRAVEL

S

tepping onto the sun-kissed soil of South Africa, the land of breathtaking safaris, one would be immediately swept away by the enchantment that would surround them. Every moment in this magnificent wilderness would feel like a journey into a dream, where nature’s beauty spills out all around her. The vistas, oh the vistas! They are a painter’s palette of fiery hues, with rolling hills that seemed to touch the sky. As the sun dips below the horizon, a vivid melody of oranges and pinks wash over the landscape, transforming it into a masterpiece of twilight. Each sunset is a promise of the equally stunning sunrises that await each day.

But it wasn’t just the skies that were seducing; it was the vibrant tapestry of life that made the land their home. Massive rhinos grazed gracefully, their ancient presence a testament to nature’s resilience. Majestic elephants, wise and powerful, roam freely, reminding one of the awe-inspiring power of these creatures. Graceful giraffes, with their necks stretching towards the barely there clouds, epitomize elegance in motion, while zebras dance across the plains. And then there were the lions, a reminder that in this extraordinary environment, survival and beauty are inextricably intertwined. As I watch these creatures thrive in their natural habitat, I realize that South Africa’s true beauty lay not only in its breathtaking vistas but also in its commitment to conservation.

RANCH

HOME AND DESIGN

G

isele Bündchen is the new owner of a 7.5-acre equestrian ranch in Southwest Ranches, Florida. The property includes a newly remodeled home with nine bedrooms, soccer facilities, tennis courts, an infinity pool with hot tub and fountain water features, and 10 large horse stalls. According to public records, Gisele paid $9.1 million for the ranch. Highlights of Gisele’s new home with almost 5,200 square feet include a first-floor primary suite with its own sitting area and private bathroom, an open concept living room with a fireplace and a floating-glass staircase, a gourmet kitchen with Italian Calacatta quartz countertops and a built-in bar. There is also an outdoor kitchen with a hibachi grill, pizza oven, BBQ pit, and a wine fridge. Gisele has owned multiple properties with her former husband, Tom Brady, in New York, Massachusetts, Montana and Florida, and she recently purchased a $11.5 million home in Surfside, Florida – just across the water from Tom’s home in Indian Creek.

52

No word on where Gisele and her two teenage children will spend most of their time, but the Southwest Ranches home is near several of Florida’s top-rated private schools. The listing agent, Chad Bishop, said that Gisele plans to have horses, chickens and other farm animals, “a real animal-friendly property.” Located near the Everglades about halfway between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Southwest Ranches is a rural neighborhood of large estates, including quite a few equestrian ranches, which led to the town’s name. Horses are almost as common as people in Southwest Ranches with miles of parks and trails to ride. The town is home to a number of national and local celebrities, including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Chicago Bears stars Devin Hester and Brandon Marshall, and Miami Heat star Udonis Johneal Haslem. BOOK SPOTLIGHT

Empower = ME POWER L

An interview with Author LaNysha Adams, Ph.D.

aNysha T. Adams (@edlinguist) is an award-winning education consultant and speaker whose mission is to revolutionize how people learn. With 20 years of experience in education at school, district, and state levels, Adams holds a Ph.D., is a certified coach, and has spoken for numerous organizations (e.g., The College Board, Ford Foundation, NSF) as well as high schools, community colleges, and universities. RAINE: Could you tell us more about where the idea for Me Power came from and the unique message about empowerment that it presents? LANYSHA ADAMS: It’s truly a reflection of 20 years in education research roles at the high school, university, school district, and state levels. I started my career teaching English to speakers of other languages do-

mestically in three states (California, New York, and New Mexico) and internationally in three countries (England, Spain, and Mexico). For ten years, I worked full-time and laid the foundation for what would become my coaching and consulting business. When I incorporated my company, Edlinguist Solutions, I decided to capture my outcome in a tagline: “The path from learning to empowerment” so that I could succinctly describe my approach to change. I’m an avid journaler, so when I reviewed all of my thoughts on the topic, this tagline also reflected an answer to the poverty question I had journaled so much about. To truly change one’s life, no matter what station we’re born into, we need to be empowered individually and collectively. The definition of empowerment had always bothered me. If empowerment comes from within, how in the hell does someone else

GIVE it to you? In Me Power, I argue that after four centuries, it’s time for a new definition for the word empower. Empower means you’re transferring power to someone else. What about the power that comes from within you, which you manifest when you become more of who you are, creating change and working to reach your maximum potential? To understand empower’s true meaning, I focused on the inverse of its prefix -em: me. The word’s prefix stems from French, Old French, and Latin, meaning “in” or “into.” In doing so, I realized empowerment is a personal process of pivoting one’s perspective inward. Traditional definitions, however, assume external forces control the process. By shifting our thinking from empower to Me Power, we become the active agents that create the change we want to see. Inherent in traditional definitions of the word is the idea someone else will quote-on-quote “empower” us. Me Power must be constructed from within. RAINE: How do you feel the struggles you had to go through in academia as a black woman have impacted your life choices and what went into Me Power? ADAMS: During my time in school, I was acutely aware of the systemic barriers designed to keep some of us out of the academy. I experienced this first-hand and had to find ways to navigate in order to make it. But it wasn’t until I started seeing myself as an asset that I began to unpack how to use Me Power—the potent combination of self-knowledge and principled action—to catalyze change to really make it through. I was a first-generation college student and the very first in my family to obtain a doctorate. Because of my experience juggling

multiple commitments as a nontraditional student, I understand the unique needs of students who are trying to complete their degrees while working full-time, parenting, and/or caretaking family members. RAINE: In the book you share the inspiring struggles and near-death or pre-death experiences of several different people. How do they – and your own struggles and neardeath experience – impact you and your ongoing work? ADAMS: Confronting death is one way to put life into a clearer view. At the beginning of 2022, for the first time during the pandemic, our entire family contracted COVID. I was sicker than ever in my life – so much so I don’t recall many hours of consciousness! After three weeks, my fever and nonstop coughing broke, and I started to feel better. A DC sports team won, and pizza was half-off. While my husband went to pick up the pizza, I sat down on the couch to close my eyes…a week later, I woke up in the ICU, having survived a COVID-pneumonia-induced cardiac arrest and coma. Without my husband returning to find me and perform CPR, there is a high chance I would not be here today. A heart attack and a cardiac arrest are medical terms that are often used interchangeably. The difference between these two conditions is that during a heart attack, the heart is still beating, so it can pump oxygen-rich blood throughout the body. During a cardiac arrest, the electrical signals that enable the heart to beat properly become disrupted and stop pumping blood throughout the body. Technically, I died and came back, so I feel a renewed sense of life. I don’t have time to waste. I’m so grateful to be alive and to see what life has in store for my two sons (ages 3 and 5) for however long I’m going to be on the planet. I feel a quiet resolve about what’s ahead, and I’m definitely not afraid of death, which I see as another kind of beginning. RAINE: In Me Power, you write, “Knowledge of self is the most important knowledge and all other knowledge must revolve around it.” Would you elaborate on this in the context of self-empowerment? How does this tie into your formula - Knowledge of Self + Principled Action = Me Power? ADAMS: Self-knowledge is the gateway to personal empowerment. Point blank period, period point blank. Empowerment requires knowing who you are and adopting a state of mind in which you refuse to define yourself by others’ unsolicited perceptions,

judgments, and expectations. The process of learning to unlearn, learn, and learn again is the basis of self-knowledge. Knowledge of self is about taking responsibility for our thoughts and actions, not just in terms of what happens outside of us, in the world, but also inside of us, in our minds. It’s about taking stock of our thoughts, beliefs, emotions, habits, and behaviors, then asking, “What do these things about me mean for me?” Self-knowledge isn’t just about knowing yourself; it’s also about knowing others because we are all products of our environments and our interactions with others. RAINE: How does Me Power differ from selfish notions such as entitlement, narcissism, and the like? ADAMS: It’s akin to asserting that self-care isn’t selfish. Maintaining our physical, mental, and emotional well-being has to be at the center of how we navigate through life; otherwise, it may be short-lived. That differs so much from narcissism—a concept that’s typically associated with someone who only thinks about themselves without any regard for others. The word “me” in Me Power may lead to a misunderstanding, as “me” may cause one to think of an individual who is mindless and self-absorbed. Right now, narcissism appears to be on the rise. Me Power, on the other hand, is not just focused on the self. It’s what I call a me-first philosophy that calls for the individual to do what is best for oneself first, always in relationships and community with

others. RAINE: What advice would you give to people who haven’t read your book or visited your websites about finding their empowerment? ADAMS: Know who you are today. Compare this version to your past. Does it align with where you want to be in the future? Self-knowledge is a journey, not a destination. If unpacking who you are is tough or if who you are today is not the best version you’d like to be in the future, then it’s time to take action! Write down three adjectives that come to mind when someone else mentions your name. What are the words they use to describe you? Ask five people who know you well to describe you using three adjectives and compare them to your original list. How do these words make you feel? Do these feelings match the way you see yourself? RAINE: Do you have any new projects coming up, or anything else you would like to share that we’ve not asked about? ADAMS: The audiobook version of Me Power will be released before the end of the year. Me Power is more than a book, it’s a new definition of empower based on an evolving knowledge of self. Me Power is available wherever books are sold and on my website for autographed and personalized copies at lanysha.com. I appreciate you for the opportunity, and I thank the readers for reading.

WRITING

Storytime FASHION IS FREEDOM Many writers find it increasingly challenging to get seen and heard. Raine Magazine, always seeking the new and exciting, has created the Storytime Short Story feature. The word limit for each submitted entry in this second edition was 350 words. After putting out a call for writers on our website and via Facebook and Instagram, we received poetry from new writers Lexi Merring and Bonita Menezes on this edition’s topic: Fashion is Freedom. Enjoy!

All AI Images by Bryson Littlejohn

Fashion is Freedom By Benita Menezes To the young girl who sketches.

Fashion is freedom,

We’re finally on the path we wanted to be

Designing the pretty bright clothes,

To the teenager in college.

walking,

On the back of her notes.

She’s finally here,

Fashion is freedom,

In design classes, let’s kill it.

Fashion is freedom, To the adult here now.

To the young girl in art class.

Fashion is freedom,

We are still quite on our way,

Now she doesn’t want to draw fruits,

To the young adult in her show.

But God! It feels so much more comfortable

The dress sketch feels like a far better pursuit.

This graduation was immense,

somehow.

Fashion is freedom,

She can finally see what she would draw.

Fashion was always freedom,

To the teenager who shops.

Fashion is freedom,

To the adult who began in art class.

Is there ever going to be,

To the young adult working.

We will make it our career,

The exact clothes as she draws?

Let’s always keep exploring,

Is there any better task?

Borrowed Shoes By Lexi Merring This is what happens when

On rainy days,

In sunshine,

You will be trapped

you let every role fit you

the holes in your heels

the pavement’s heat

in shoes that are

like a borrowed

will start to soak up

will melt your soles

not yours that will lead you

pair of shoes

puddles like tears

until you are

exactly where you are told to be,

one half size

and will hold them

stuck in place

never where you want to be.

too small:

until your socks are saturated

(but you are always

and your feet are cold.

stuck in place).

You will become

This is what happens until you are tired of duct-taped bottoms

a patchwork of ripped seams

Sometimes the laces

and wet socks and stuck soles and

and duct tape but

will tie themselves

laces that trip you

no amount of holes

together in knots

for no reason at all.

will convince you to

just to watch you fall.

get your own pair.

This is what happens until you kick off the borrowed shoes and demand your own. This is what happens until you stop letting others determine your path and start creating it yourself.

The Elephante In the Studio

MUSIC

A

wildly innovative producer, artist, and songwriter fusing melodic electraonic dance music with pop, blues, rock, and other genres, Elephante (American musical artist Tim Wu) is living what many people might call “The American Dream”. As the son of Taiwanese immigrants, his Asian-American upbringing in Michigan was unique and sometimes isolating. He graduated from Harvard University and entered corporate America at a top global consultant firm – thoroughly disliked it - and pursued his passion in music. To date, he’s garnered hundreds of millions of streams across his two indie EPs: I Am The Elephante (2016), a nine-track exploration of progressive house, synthpop and trap; and Glass Mansion (2018), which shot to #1 on iTunes! U.S. Dance chart. His upcoming project, Heavy Glow, represents his first full-length studio album, a largely solo effort further pushing the boundaries of dance music, featuring the debut single, “High Water.” Elephante has headlined two sold-out national tours, played nightlife residencies including those at Hard Rock and Wynn Las Vegas, and appeared at major music festivals such as Lollapalooza, EDC Las Vegas, and Electric Zoo.

Photo Credits: María José Govea .

RAINE: Where did the name Elephante come from? ELEPHANTE: Elephante is a reference to the phrase “elephant in the room” - when I first moved out to LA, I had a corporate job and absolutely hated it. I was always leaving early and calling in sick to work on music. I even installed Ableton on my work computer. So the elephant in the room was that I wanted to be a musician, and the name was about embracing the elephant in the room and becoming the Elephante. RAINE: When you’re not making music, what do you listen to? Who are your musical heroes (and what genre of music are they)? ELEPHANTE: I listen to all sorts of stuff, everything from electronic to classical to hip hop to the Barbie soundtrack (which kinda bangs). My idol growing up was John Mayer - he was the guy that made me want to make music. Lately I’ve been really inspired by Rufus and Odesza, and some up and coming artists like ford. and Del Water Gap. RAINE: How many instruments do you play? Is there one you don’t yet play but want to learn? How did you learn to play and sing? ELEPHANTE: I play piano and guitar. I was trained in classical piano as a kid, and I taught myself guitar when I was in middle school, mainly by listening to Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Mayer, and Oasis, and printing tabs off the internet. I’d love to learn to play drums - I’ve always had a strong melodic and songwriting sense, but learning how to produce good drums has always been a challenge for me, and I think it just looks like a ton of fun. RAINE: Is there a specific message you want people to get from any of your songs? Is there a specific impression you aim to leave with your music? ELEPHANTE: I write my songs from a very specific

place, but honestly once it leaves my computer and is off into the world, I don’t feel like they’re mine anymore - they belong to whoever is listening. I have songs that I think are really sad, but I’ve been told that they make people happy and vice versa, so who am I to tell you that someone else’s experience is wrong? I just want my music to bring people to another world and make them feel something. RAINE: What dream venue do you want to perform at and why? Is there a TV or streaming show you desire to perform on? ELEPHANTE: I’d love to play at Red Rocks one day. I’ve been lucky enough to check off a lot of venues and shows off my bucket list, but Red Rocks is one of the last remaining ones. I’m not sure about a live TV performance - the Super Bowl I guess? But I’d love to write a song for a TV show like The Bear or something like that. RAINE: What advice would you offer a new artist just getting started? ELEPHANTE: Honestly just follow your gut and keep putting the work in. There’s no formula to success everyone has a different path, and if you try to copy what someone else did, you’re destined for failure. And just know that it’s going to be hard. But just remember, every amazing artist was bad when they started. And I really believe the people who “make it” aren’t necessarily the ones with the most talent, it’s the people who can get told no the most times and keep pushing through. RAINE: Do you have any new projects coming up, or anything else you would like to share that we’ve not asked about? ELEPHANTE: I just released a few collab singles earlier this year, and lately I’ve been working on my next solo album. The first single should be coming very soon, and I can’t wait for everyone to hear it.

COVER STORY

J

ohn Ashford is a shoe designer, visual artist, illustrator, photographer, stylist, author, and teacher. After graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University with a major in Commercial Art, Ashford traveled to many cities in the United States and around the world.

He learned the process of constructing the perfect stylish and comfortable shoe from an old veteran cobbler in Naples, Italy.

His shoes have also been in numerous high fashion magazines. Additionally, he has made shoes for celebrities such as Wendy Williams, Alicia Keys, Ashanti, Paris Hilton, and many, more. His limited-edition shoe line is currently sold online, in select stores in Canada, select boutiques in the US, and the John Ashford Showroom in New York City. His limited-edition Sneaker line is called J-Ash.

Marrying those exquisite lessons and his natural artistic ability, he created The John Ashford Collection in 2003.

RAINE: Why did you pursue a career in designing shoes?

In late 2012, he birthed Authentic by John Ashford. This unique brand defines couture with high fashion art. Each shoe is an artistic masterpiece that is hand-crafted and signed by John Ashford himself.

JOHN ASHFORD: I pursued a career in designing shoes because an Italian cobbler saw that I had a passion for art, and he was excited about teaching me. I was doubtful at first, but then believed I would become successful at it.

His shoe collection has been featured around the world - including Africa, England, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Switzerland, and many other countries.

RAINE: When did you fall in love with art and why?

ASHFORD: I fell in love with art when I was a small child. The earliest memory was when I was four years old, and I was writing my name on the wall in my bedroom. By the time I got to the second letter, my mom disciplined me and let me know not to draw on the walls. The next day, she brought me a little black book with white pages in it. I started drawing lines, crooked lines, broken lines, wavy lines, and circular lines. That was the beginning moment of my art career. RAINE: Where do you get the inspiration for your shoes?

ASHFORD: I get inspiration from nature.

I love colors and textures. Water is a stimulant in my ideas. Transparency is a beautiful contour to fashion.

RAINE: What drew you to become an art teacher, and what impact do you want to have? ASHFORD: When I grew up, I was the youngest between my sister and I. Many of the kids in my neighborhood were either three years older or three years younger. The majority of the children were not my age. As I became a teenager, I learned that I had acquired so much from the older kids. In turn, I ended up being a role model to the younger kids. By the time I finished college, I realized that I had a powerful voice and wanted to uplift other artists like myself. I wanted every artist to be in charge of their own art and manage their own artwork. As an art teacher, I have seen countless students come back years after graduation to say, “Thank you for teaching me this or that!” It makes me proud to know I helped a student become a better person in life. RAINE: What is your favorite place that you have traveled to, and how did that make you a better designer?

ASHFORD: Out of the 38 countries that I have had the pleasure of traveling to, Costa Rica was my favorite place. I saw a waterfall flow into a pond, and out of the pond, was another waterfall that flowed into another pond. It was so surreal that I jumped into the pond and felt like I had found the fountain of youth. From that experience, I learned to just go with what feels natural. That is what I feel makes me a more in-tune designer. RAINE: Have you ever faced the issue of burnout in your career? If so, how did you overcome it? ASHFORD: I have never faced burnout, but I always try to be a better artist and designer than I was from the day before. Instead of following trends, I choose to stay creative and go with the flow. RAINE: If someone asked you how they could stimulate their creativity, what advice would you give? ASHFORD: To stimulate one’s creativity, I would ask them to take a walk in their neighborhood,

or in someone else’s neighborhood. I personally like going to the beach and watching the water hit the sand. For every wave, there is a different ocean current to the sand. RAINE: What are three things your fans don’t know about you? ASHFORD: 1) I’ve been a DJ since 12 years old. 2) I was in a hip-hop jazz band as a DJ/Turntablist, and that’s how I was able to travel to Naples, Italy - where I ended up studying with a shoe cobbler.

3) I am also a painter/visual artist that has had my artwork featured on many of the 90’s TV sitcoms such as Martin, The Jamie Foxx Show, Moesha, The Parkers, For Your Love, and recently this year, The Crossover series written by Kwame Alexander for Disney Plus. RAINE: What words of wisdom can you share with others on a similar journey? ASHFORD: Anyone getting into fashion or art, stay true to who you are and never let money or infiltration decide your worth! Be you and be okay with that. If others aren’t okay with that, that is their loss. You can change the world by being you 100%. RAINE: Do you have any exciting plans coming up? ASHFORD: I’ve been making shoes for over 20 years, so in fall/winter 2023/2024, I will finally be releasing my book Primary Colors, The Art of the Shoe. It is about my stories and the beginning years of shoemaking.

women in web 3 T

he world of Web3 and all things Blockchain, crypto, AI, and Metaverse is swiftly evolving. Artistic, talented creators have found a medium where their voices can be heard loud and clear. Among the newly empowered creatives entering Web3, there are a host of phenomenal women leading the way. Raine Magazine caught up to several and asked them about what drives/motivates them.

Everyone working in the space is trying to address a challenge, but they’re doing it with a mindset of collaboration and support.

Competition is taking the backseat in this “co-era” where collaboration, community, and co-creation is the ethos. In a world that is littered with negative headlines, strife and seemingly insurmountable challenges, the Web3 space is the opposite. It is positive with a can-do attitude of “we, the people”. It is a collection of people who see a future that looks different (and better) from what media is showing us. Web3 gives us the opportunity to start thinking bigger and doing bigger, because we don’t place limits on what we think

CHARLENE NICHOLS: My original reason was to empower the eye care industry by building sustainable and independent solutions that make it easier for all sectors of the eye care industry to interact, connect, and transact. The device combines vibration and thermal therapy in a unique shape to provide targeted pain relief for patients with myofascial trigger points and fascial tightness. It is designed to fit most braces for physical therapy or post-surgical musculoskeletal pain. “We are thrilled to have received these patents for VibraCool Pro,” said Amy Baxter, MD, CEO and Chief Medical Officer of Pain Care Labs. “Therapists have been asking for a pacemaker-safe modality. Patients have wanted a way to use our technology with and under braces. Having new patents and an improved design for clinical use is a significant milestone for our company, bridging bracing with pain-relieving wearables.” VibraCool Pro uses a unique combination of vibration and hot or cold therapy to deliver fast and effective pain relief. The device features a cleanable surface contoured for hand-held use as a modality for myofascial trigger points, or attaching with a strap to conform to multiple body

surfaces or existing braces. It is ideal for patients with myofascial pain, trigger points, and other sources of pain.

Pain Reduction by Modality

From aches and injuries to throbbing overuse syndromes, VibraCool® gives users one-touch wearable power over pain. Developed from over a decade of pain relief research, VibraCool® uses a patented combination of freeze solid ice and focal muscle vibration (fMV) therapies to naturally activate your body’s active pain fighting response. Our proprietary fMV frequency and thermal options relieve pain and remove the stress and anxiety that goes along with it.

Just as running a burn under cold water stops the sharp pain, or rubbing a bumped elbow stops the pain, our frequency stimulates the body’s system to dull or eliminate pain.

“I have experienced 13 knee surgeries. Finding the VibraCool Pro has been life-changing,” said initial prototype tester Teddy Hodges. “It provides effective pain relief while being portable and discreet. Combining it with compression sleeves and more rigid bracing has been a game changer to improve my life without drugs. Highly recommend.”
