Rainbow River Simmentals 10th Annual Online Bull Sale

Page 1

Welcome

Welcome to our 10th Annual Online Bull Sale!

Ten years - it feels like a milestone that’s worth acknowledging. I mean, we have sold bulls for a few years longer than that, as I had started out with private treaty sales initially in 2012. But nevertheless, the decision to move away from private treaty sales and step into the more risky world of an auction sale, did not come lightly 10 years ago.

I had started out selling bulls privately, from my yard, just like my dad did. Dad used to sell over 50 bulls each spring by private treaty. As a young girl, I picked up a lot from watching and listening to him tour customers through his bull pen. I was familiar with it, so it seemed easy to do it myself when I offered up my own pen of bulls for the first time. At that time, I was farming by Minnedosa. Dustin and I were dating, and he was a grain farmer, not a cattle rancher. I had no prior customer base, no connections, and being new to the area, I was starting with a blank slate. But, good old ebrandon classifieds and the online world of advertising helped me get started. I relied on ebrandon being my main advertising platform for several years. Slowly, word of mouth referrals started to bring in more customers. I never did produce a catalogue back then, although I did (very amateurly, lol) attempt to picture my bulls to include in my ebrandon ads.

After four years of private treaty sales, from 2012 to 2015, interest in my breeding program had really ramped up. It got to the point in 2015 where my past customers were getting pretty competitive in trying to be the first to select their bull(s). I had one repeat customer come in September, before the bulls were weaned, wanting to buy two bulls at that time. I recall being surprised and flattered all at once, but I was uncomfortable with selling bulls that early in their life. For one, they had several more months to go to develop and prove that they are deserving to sell as a bull. Second, I wasn’t sure how to price the bulls at that stage of their life, as they were very much still developing. That customer was insistent and I did eventually make a deal with him on two bulls. Then a couple weeks later, my neighbour found out that I had already sold two bulls. He was used to being the first through the pen and getting first pick, so he wasn’t too happy to hear that he missed out on getting there first!

The demand snowballed from there and nearly my entire bull pen was sold out by the end of December that year. It was a double edged sword. Although it was a good problem to have so many customers fighting over my bulls, I couldn’t help but contemplate if it was time to make a change. Time to simplify my life and condense my bull selling down into one day, instead of several months. I worked full time off the farm back then, and selling bulls by private treaty was challenging and time consuming when I wasn’t home and available all of the time. Also, I wondered if it was time to let my customers bid on my bulls. Then everyone would have a fair chance at getting to own that special bull they really wanted.

Back at this time, in 2015, the world of online bidding platforms was just getting going. LiveAuctions.tv was one of the first more noteable bidding platforms that I recall watching sales on. I made the decision to give this mode of selling a try. Dustin and I got married in 2015, and in 2016 we held our first online sale with LiveAuctions. That bidding platform was very different from today. We had to book a conference room at a hotel in Brandon, because we needed high speed internet in order to use the website. There was a live bidding button to click to bid, but the bulls sold one at a time, so there was an “auctioneer” who ran the LiveAuctions platform and verbally spoke to the people online. Looking back, it was slightly primitive, but hey, it worked! We also produced and mailed our first sale catalogue in 2016. That was a milestone in itself.

We sold our bulls through LiveAuctions for two years, with 12 bulls selling in 2016 and eight selling in 2017. Then, we moved. We relocated our farm to Fisher Branch in 2017, and built a brand new calving barn. I had always dreamed of having a live bull sale, so we decided to make a change again, this time moving to a live sale with optional online bidding through DLMS.

That 2018 sale was our worst ever. We sold 19 bulls that year, and 10 heifers, and the average was poor. We had very few buyers in attendance and most of our bulls sold over DLMS. Once again, we were farming in a new area with no established customer base. It felt like we were starting from scratch once

again. But we stuck with it. We did the live sale again in 2019 and 2020, with little improvements in the sale average and attendance each year. However, one thing remained constant. Consistently, 85% of our bulls sold through DLMS to online bidders.

In 2020, our sale had narrowly missed the Covid-19 lock downs, literally by a few days. In 2021, the world was a mess over the Covid pandemic and social distancing was real. At this point, we were forced to make yet another change to our bull sale, moving away from a live sale to an online DLMS FarmGate auction.

Covid forced us to move to the online sale format, but customer satisfaction, simplicity of sale day and sale preparations, and decreased sale day stress on the bulls, has made us stick with it. We have honestly enjoyed selling our bulls through FarmGate over the past five years and while we don’t plan to change away from this mode of selling anytime soon, we have decided to make one more change. This time, with how we promote and advertise our bulls leading up to sale day.

Over the last few years since our son was born, our lives have become more and more chaotic. Life with a toddler is very busy, and our farming operation has expanded. Farm help is hard to find. Dustin and I have noted that we need to find a way to slow the pace in order to increase our work-life balance and give more quality time to our son. But, how?

Prepping for bull sale amongst the peak of calving season is the most insane, self-inflicted torture we do to ourselves all year. Picturing the bulls takes days, then days of photo editing. The catalogue takes weeks to design. As soon as the catalogue is published online and sent to the printers, we are back in the picture pen a week or two later, videoing the bulls. It is repetitive and time consuming, and over the past year, I couldn’t help but think about how we can improve this process.

Times have changed. We’ve come a long way from selling our bulls with nothing more than an ebrandon classifieds ad. Online bidding platforms have become very reliable and sofisticated. Social media is king. The world has moved online, and although print advertising is still used, I can’t help but wonder if it’s actually, truely needed in today’s world. Canada Post has been less than reliable for the last several years. We spend five figures on catalogue design, printing and mailing each year, just for Canada Post to move at snail pace with getting them into the hands of our customers. I have a better idea. An online video catalogue.

In November, we decided to do a trial run with my newest idea, and we published a video catalogue to promote our 5th Annual Online Female & Genetics Sale. We received many compliments on the idea and we personally like how it worked. So here we are. Pushing the boundaries of what this industry has become accustomed to. Being creative, thinking outside the box. Perhaps blazing a trail? But, I really don’t care about that. We will do what we think is best for our operation and our family. Even if we are the only ones doing it. I think I may be onto something, though!

So with that, we are beyond excited to introduce you to our very first bull sale video catalogue. We hope you enjoy looking through our bulls in this way. Obviously, the catalogue will not be printed, but we have still mailed out a little sale reminder for you to hang on your fridge or keep with your stack of catalogues. As always, I am more than happy to talk you through our offering and to help you make selections that will best suit your breeding program. Don’t hesitate to reach out with any inquiries. Thanks in advance for your interest in our program!

We like to breed good cattle. We like working with good people. We take pride in doing good business.

Cheers, Jennilee

• Sale weights and semen test results will be posted on our website prior to sale day.

WEANING

Bulls were weaned on September 1, 2024 using a fenceline weaning method.

HEALTH

All cattle have been on a total herd health program since birth. They have been vaccinated and treated with:

• Pyramid FP5 + Presponse in February and at weaning

• Tasvax 8 in February and May

• Fermicon 7/Somnugen at weaning

• Safe Guard oral paste at weaning

• Ivermectin & Clean Up II for external parasites in June and November

GESTATION LENGTH

• We use a 285 day gestation period.

• The heritability of gestation length is moderately high.

• Gestation length influences a calf’s BW and a cow’s calving interval.

• All bulls have their gestation length specified in this catalogue, including embryo transfer (ET) calves. However, keep in mind that the age and genetics of the recipient dam could influence the ET calf’s gestation length, making it a potentially inaccurate indicator of the ET calf’s actual inherited gestation potential.

GENETIC TESTING

• All bulls have homo polled and coat colour results specified in this catalogue.

• If their polled and coat colour status could not be determined through parentage, then DNA testing was performed to obtain their results.

• “Homo” is short for Homozygous, i.e.) Homozygous Polled

• “Hetero” is short for Heterozygous, i.e.) Heterozygous Polled

• A red animal born out of two black parents will be diluter free.

• All animals were DNA tested as per CSA requirements.

• This means that a minimum SNP parentage test was completed on all embryo transfer (ET) progeny to verify parentage.

• In most cases, non-ET (natural) progeny have not been parentage tested.

• It is the purchaser’s responsibility to verify which parentage test was completed, if any, on each lot purchased.

What do the results mean?

RAINBOW RIVER WALK THE LINE 114M

Lots 1, 2 and 3 are full brothers who come to you from one of our young donors that traces back to the great WFL Red Sage 506C. Their granddam is the dam of Lots 10 and 11, she is a full sister to Betts and is also a donor in our program. The dam of these bulls brings in some different blood being sired by the highly exclusive American bull, STF Crimson Tide. Sage 11H is a big framed, long bodied, powerful cow with an excellent udder that milks well. Just like Lot 1, she has been special since the day she was born. I knew early in her life that she would be destined for our donor pen, and 38M has been impressive through every stage of his life, too. His pictures and videos speak for themselves. Never have we produced a bull with so much natural depth, dimension and softness, yet maintaining a strong top and fluid, flexible movement. He has a puppy dog disposition and excellent hair quality. Walk The Line has produced well for us over the last few years, and 38M offers more depth and power than his sire. 38M has blazed the trail for the rest of his contemporaries all of his life, weaning off of 11H as our heaviest adj WW bull on Sept 1 with a WW ratio of 107. Then powering through the fall and winter to check in as our heaviest YW bull with a YW ratio of 110. We are excited to be offering this bull to the industry and will be using him to advance our program as well. We reserve the right to retain semen for in-herd use.

Lot 1 was 11H’s natural calf, and Lots 2 and 3 are flush brothers. Lot 2 is the fancier brother, and still maintains an abundance of natural shape and thickness. He was just as impressive as Lot 1 through the first few months of his life. 114M has been a consistent gainer, ranking third with a ratio of 104 for both WW and YW. He is a power bull but will also produce beautiful daughters.

Lot 3 is the smaller framed option of these Sage brothers, but he is a chunk, being thick and dimensional from every angle. He appears to be easy doing, as he is one of the fleshiest bulls in the entire offering. We had two sets of ET calves born from Sage 11H last year; from Walk The Line and Tycoon. We have retained several daughters from Sage 11H in our replacement pen, two of which are flushmates to Lots 2 and 3 and are truly impressive. At weaning time, those mid-February born heifers stood in line with our early January heifers in terms of their size and performance. We also sold two Tycoon x Sage 11H heifers in our Online Female & Genetics Sale in November, they were popular and really demonstrate how prepotent Sage 11H is in production. Her ability to consistently stamp her progeny, regardless of gender and sire, is so valuable. Sage 11H and Sage 37F are two of the most consistent producing cows we have ever utilized in our program. I would expect similar consistency to be bred on through these sons.

131L was in the running to lead off this sale for most of his life. Last spring, as a young calf, his performance and bull character set him apart from the rest early on. He was the most popular bull on pasture tours because of his natural muscle expression combined with extra length of body and an early maturing look. He was also our heaviest bull at weaning time. We purchased his dam as one of the high selling bred heifers from the R Plus Dispersal in 2022. 1279J has a picture perfect udder and she has been producing very well for us over the last couple years. Her first calf was a dark red Sochi son that was popular last year and sold to Porter Ranches Ltd. in Alberta. 131L was so impressive by March last year that I bred 1279J back to WTL, and she gave us another red full brother to 131L in January. This is a cross that clicks as this year’s bull calf looks promising as well. 131L has what it takes to produce a stout set of sons, but his pedigree is also designed with the cow herd in mind. To combine the beautiful donor females on WTL’s side of the equation with a Venom daughter suggests good things from a maternal standpoint.

RAINBOW RIVER WALK THE LINE 97M

The dam of this bull is a beautiful, young cow with an impeccable udder and a lot of future ahead of her. We have been flushing her over the last couple of years and are working on building a cow family around her. Lass’ first natural calf for us was a Walk The Line son and full brother to Lot 5. That bull was popular in our bull sale this past March, selling for $9000 to South Valley Farms here in Manitoba. Several ET progeny were born here last year from Lass’ first two flushes; the bulls and heifers look equally good. Particularly with this mating, the heifers are especially beautiful. If you’re looking for a bull to improve a cow herd with, 97M would be a good option. His daughters should have impeccable udders with lots of milk.

This bull presents a very interesting and rare genetic opportunity. Being sired by the female maker, Tycoon, who the industry lost prematurely and whose semen is nearly impossible to source, and a direct son out of our beautiful Lass 84H donor, makes 64M one very unique breeding piece. Flushing cows is always a gamble, but when I put the irreplaceable Tycoon semen into Lass for this flush, naturally I was holding my breath and hoping for a big result! Imagine my disappointment when she skunked me on a flush with rare semen - giving me one lonely embryo. That embryo is 64M. He is one of a kind! We love our Tycoon females that we have in production. His daughters are known for being beautiful cows with their impeccable udder quality, ideal milking ability and dark red colour. Combine that with everything that Lass 84H has to offer, and bam! We have a big time, maternally bred bull here in 64M. He is a very quiet bull, long bodied, soft made with a thick hair coat, and dark pigmented from nose to tail. He should successfully breed on his dark, cherry red colour and produce a solid set of sons, but just think about how nice his daughters will be!

Lot 6: AUGUST 2024
Dam at 3 Years Old: SPRINGCREEK LASS 84H
Lot 6: HIND VIEW

We purchased the dam of Lots 7 and 8 as the the $22,500 high seller from the Sun Rise Dispersal in 2022. We purchased her to be a donor as we loved her foot quality, rib shape, depth and overall capacity, udder quality and dark red colour. As I said with Lot 6, flushing is always a gamble and we learned the hard way that 32C does not flush conventionally. We have had a slow start getting her progeny on the ground as we have been attempting to figure her out from a flushing standpoint for the last couple years, all the while with her only ever producing three viable embryos. 44M is one of those embryos and the only one of his kind. His flush brother was arguably even better than him, but had a testicle stepped on during the summer so had to be culled. 44M is a long bodied bull that carries the typical WTL stamp. WTL is so prepotent with stamping his progeny the same, it can get repetitive talking about them! 44M is the only WTL son we will ever have off of 32C, so if you like this cross, snap him up while you can.

RAINBOW RIVER WALK THE LINE 44M

After two flushes only resulting in three embryos, I was faced with the decision to either leave 32C open for the year and continue to attempt to flush her, or breed her back for a late calf. I decided to play it safe and opted to breed 32C to Shamrock. That’s why 122M was born mid-March, making him the youngest bull in the offering by a long shot. He probably could have weaned off heavier, but one calf in his pasture group consistently stole off his dam. He can be appreciated for his extra depth and softness of body, and excellent hair. Lots of good cow power backs up this young man, too.

Selling choice 3 or 5 embryos from one mating only IVF embryos - Stored at Abbotsford Vet Clinic, BC Tangleflags embryos are CAN & US qualified; all others CAN only

At the end of last year, I finally threw in the towel with attempting to flush 32C conventionally and decided to send her to the west coast, all the way to Abbotsford, BC, to try some IVF flushing. Thankfully, 32C has been a rock star in IVF production and has frozen a very healthy inventory over the last couple months! So healthy, in fact, that I have decided to share some of the embryos with this feature lot. We have flushed her to some of the most intriguing and maternally stacked bulls available, including the exclusive $210,000 Tangleflags whose semen sold for a record setting $2100 per dose just over a month ago! We have flushed her to Tangleflags’ sire, Holyfield, and our very own Protest, who is a Tycoon son out of the immortal WFL Red Sage 506C. The owners’ of Sage 506C will tell you that her cross with Tycoon is probably her best ever mating. Protest’s full sister, the $60,000 SVS Red Sage 49J is on fire in production, setting the stage to perhaps be the next great donor from this cow family. Protest has always been the “who is that!?!” bull when people tour here - he is that impressive. We know we have something special in him and we think he will work nice on 32C. We saw Justified in the flesh in June and were sure impressed with him in a lot of ways. Combining the Sammy and Soda Pop cow family with 32C and Captain Morgan should be exciting. The choice is yours!

RAINBOW RIVER SHAMROCK 25M

Lot 10: RAINBOW RIVER SHAMROCK 25M
Dam & Full Sister by Blood to Lots

RAINBOW RIVER SHAMROCK 26M

Our Sage 37F donor continues to impress us with her production ability. It doesn’t matter which way we breed this cow, she makes them good every time. She is a power cow, so I need to manage her power by breeding her to more calving ease type bulls. The outcome has always been high performing, long bodied, well balanced bulls, and daughters that put some jam into their offspring as well. We sold an impressive group of WTL flush brothers out of 37F last year, plus we have sold daughters to LaBatte Simmentals and Bonchuk Farms. 37F’s most potent daughter in production is our Sage 11H donor, who is responsible for Lots 1-3 in this sale. 37F is an extremely good footed cow with an excellent udder and is highly fertile both in production and with flushing. After flushing her to WTL, she gave me this set of twin bulls. They have been like two peas in a pod for the majority of their life. 25M has been the higher gaining bull with a little more stretch and in a slightly darker red package. Whereas 26M is softer made with more depth of body and a touch more natural shape. Because maternal matters, the idea to use Shamrock on 37F was based on my desire to cross the KWA Ms Rock 14X donor on my Sage cow family. That’s right... females - females - females! These bulls will be capable of raising a solid group of steers, or use them to build a cow herd. You’d probably look pretty smart if you bought them both and ran them together.

Just read the pedigree on this bull: Reddington, Venom, Sprinkles, Certainly Flirtin. That’s some serious cow power. We have been using Reddington for several years and have always appreciated the type of his progeny, which Lots 11 and 12 exemplify very well. Soft made and deep ribbed, moderate in frame, very docile and excellent feet. However, last year when Reddington’s first daughters entered production, we developed a new found appreciation for him. His daughters are sure making ideal young cows with picture perfect udders that milk just right, plus their softness and capacity lend itself to making them easy keeping cattle. They are quiet and sound footed, what more could we ask for? 1M will be an easier calving bull that will serve to add depth of body and maternal traits.

This bull has been a personal favorite all year. I’m a sucker for deep ribbed, soft made, sound cattle, and 35M has always jumped out at me because of that. I love that he came darker red, and I love it even more that he comes from our Sprinkles cow family. This bull is backed by generations of excellent footed cattle, plus the udder quality and milking ability backing him is second to none. In our inaugural Online Female & Genetics sale, we sold his dam as an open heifer to our friends at Valley Creek Simmentals in Australia. 49H spent a year in our ET program, being flushed to export her embryos to AUS. 35M has some full siblings walking the red dirt in Australia, but he was the natural calf out of 49H and is the only one in existence here in Canada. 35M has one tiny white spot over one back toe, but otherwise he’s pretty complete.

80M will be an easier calving option. Probably not quite heifer safe, only because the Dynasty influence on the bottom side of his pedigree adds some punch, but he could prove me wrong. Sprinkles 189E chops BW on her calves no matter which way we breed her. She is an outstanding cow, easily cementing her place at the top of our program and

becoming one of the most prepotent donor cows that we’ll ever have the privilege to own. To see Sprinkles in the flesh is to love her - she is ideally built with excellent feet that she breeds onto all of her progeny. There are few donor cows that stamp their progeny as consistently as Sprinkles does. You can see her stamp on the dam of this bull, pictured here as a first calf heifer, and also in 80M himself. 69K comes from an extremely consistent flush that resulted in two very special bulls for customers of ours. One pictured above, and the other sold for $20,100.

Calving Ease. If there is power in presence then this bull has it in spades! He carries himself with charisma and demands attention. He has always been this way, from the time he was a baby. He was the earliest maturing bull in the group, and the only one brave enough to still chase a cow in heat alonside our boss man, Protest. He should have very strong libido once you set him out to work! The only thing separating this bull from total perfection is that he does toe out on his front feet and he has two small socks on his back feet. But check out his stats - tiny BW, short gestation, ranked at the top of the breed for BW and CE. He is a very interesting calving ease option that could work in the heifer pen. He is backed by our very strong Belle cow family. His dam is a small framed, massive bodied cow and his granddam, 2G, is one of the most phenotypically ideal cows on the farm. His great granddam, 8D, has been a top producer and raised Lot 19.

Maternal greatness. Longevity. Foot quality. Dark red. If I had to choose only a few words to sum up this bull, that would be it. His dam is the second oldest cow in our herd and her ability to still be in production at her ripe age of 15 years is a testament to her fertility, soundness and ability to produce. Vegas 9X has put countless top performing bulls through our sales over the years. We only have two very cherished daughters in production. One is a “B” model, a top producer and the foundation of our “Belle” cow family (see Lots 15 and 19). Vegas’ second daughter was finally born two years ago, after 8 long years of bull calf after bull calf. After giving me yet another bull this January, I’m debating whether I should breed the old girl to sexed heifer semen, or flush her. Or maybe, flush her to sexed heifer semen! My point is, I just can’t get enough of Vegas’ influence in my herd and you really can’t go wrong with this bull. Stratton has worked really well on Vegas. I have bred her this way three times. Her most recent daughter is a full sister to 15M and she has an excellent udder, great feet, is dark red as well, and is doing a really nice job on her first calf. We also sold a full brother to Pittman Bros. in Alberta two years ago. The dark red colour should be locked into 15M as nearly his entire pedigree is stacked with dark cherry red cattle. You don’t find many cattle with the great JSP Red Prime Cut 010H sire in their pedigree anymore, but he was the best herd bull that ever graced my dad’s pastures. Purchased from Barry LaBatte, Prime Cut was a female maker. If you have a chance to get some Prime Cut blood into your program, do it.

This bull will be found sale day. He is so stout, thick, deep and soft made, he is hard to get around. And he is a youngster, being the third youngest bull in the offering, but he sure doesn’t look it! Made only better by the cow families that back him, just check out his pedigree. Brandy 9B was one of the best red cows to ever walk here. She raised big, quality calves every single year, and made it look easy. Dark red, heavy milking, strong uddered, excellent feet and easy keeping. After many years of her excellence in production, we finally flushed her last spring. She over stimulated, and only gave a few viable embryos with over 20 left unfertilized. I had planned to flush her again this year, but unfortunately, we lost Brandy at the beginning of August, with no embryos in the tank. A heartbreaking loss, for sure (RIP gorgeous girl). Now her legacy will have to live on through the two ET calves that were born this year, and her daughters that I have in production. If Brandy wouldn’t have died last year, the plan was to flush her to Tycoon to create a bunch more offspring like the dam of this bull. 41J is a big, powerful, deep bodied, big capacity, strong uddered, easy keeping cow that is as dark red as they come. We have two Tycoon x Brandy cows in production and they’re both excellent cows. The full sister to 41J put a $9250 son through this sale last year. And 41J herself has a ripper of a WTL bull calf at side that was born in January. He is a looker! The sire of 119M was our Navajo bull, a direct son out of LaBatte’s #1 cow, Pocahontas 2Y. The power, performance, and maternal strength backing this bull make him a very interesting herd bull prospect.

Calving Ease. 8M is our poster boy for this year. He got to grace the front cover of this catalogue. He has the most impressive width of top, hip, spring of rib and overall natural thickness and dimension. From the side view, you appreciate his balance, softness, length and depth, but once you step behind this bull, or view him from a side angle, he really shows you what he’s made of. If you’re looking for a bull to add natural thickness and muscling, look no further. If you’re looking for a bull to keep daughters off of, he’s also your bull for that. His granddam is our matriarch and previous leading donor, Blacksand Linette 823U - the cow that transformed our program. She is now deceased but we do still have some embryos in inventory and we love her daughters in production. I tell everyone that you can never go wrong with a Linette! The dam of this bull is a small framed cow with an awesome udder and the typical massive rib shape that the Linette’s are known for. 68K did a whale of a job raising this bull in her first year of production and has another nice heifer calf at side right now. I have stacked up the maternal strength in this bull to take the guess work out of the equation. Cobra, Iron Sugar, Ms Rock 14X, Linette, and Liner 104S - all very prominent, maternally driven names that have been around for a long time. This bull is a calving ease option that will work on second calvers and cows. I’m not sure if he will end up full-fledged heifer safe or not. He might have a little too much shape to be a bomb proof calving ease bull, but could potentially work on well-developed heifers.

I have loved the look of this bull from the moment he was born. He weaned off being the third heaviest adj WW bull in the group, and posted a ratio of 105 for both WW and YW performance. He is as dark red as you can make them, which runs generations deep on both sides of his pedigree. His maternal great granddam is the dam of Lot 16 and is still in production at 15 years of age. His granddam and dam are still producing also. The Belle’s are a very strong cow family for us, never skipping a beat in production and always doing what is expected of them. The dam of this bull has put a feature heifer through our Online Female & Genetics Sale to Judd Ag Ventures in MB, and his granddam has put daughters in the herds of Robb Farms, Perkin Land and Cattle and Drew Don Simmentals. Our $13,500 high selling bull last year was raised by a daughter of 14B as well. Lots of maternal power from this cow family. Protest himself adds some more maternal merit with being a Tycoon son out of the most productive Simmental cow in recent Canadian history. Protest’s first daughters have entered production this year and as expected, we love them for their show quality udders and milking ability. He is a powerful, soggy, awesome footed bull that is very easy keeping. He has put his stamp nicely on 120M. Protest is famous for throwing a lot of heifers, that is why we haven’t had any sons for sale until now. For those of you who toured here last winter, fell in love with Protest and were asking about a son... take a good look here. He’s our only red Protest son on offer this year!

If you’re looking to add that kind of substance to your calf crop, 109M will be the bull to do it. He is a small framed bull that is super soggy and stout. He is another grandson of our esteemed Linette donor, and he comes by that massive barrel, tankiness and softness honestly. His dam and granddam were built the same way. His dam died suddenly on pasture this fall, and unfortunately I never did take a picture of her, but she looked a lot like Linette 823U. 36G was an excellent footed cow and so easy doing. Calving Ease. Our one and only Impact bull on offer this year, and he is a doozy! If you have been following our program over the last several years, you will know how influential Impact has been around here. I probably say it every year, but Impact will go down as being the best bull we have ever had the privilege of using. There is no other sire that we have come across that provides such a wicked combination of calving ease and performance, while still making such functional females, and fixing feet, hair and udders. His secret to being such a special curve bender is the prepotency of his short gestation, with most Impact progeny coming 7-10 days early more often than not. Lot 22 definitely inherited that trait with being born 10 days early. The other predictable outcome we have established with Impact is how nicely he crosses with Walk This Way. The Impact x WTW combination is one we have used with great success for a few years now. It certainly worked with this bull, plus our most popular black bull last year was an Impact x WTW, as was our high selling red bull in 2022. Considering all of that, and the cow family backing 128L, the pieces of the puzzle start falling into place. His dam pictured here as a first calf heifer in August, is a beautiful female that was a beauty queen as a calf. His granddam, 28F, is an absolute tank and one of the most picked out cows on summer tours. 128L is one of those special bulls that was obviously really impressive from the moment he was born. He’s always had that herd bull presence to him, and so much shape and sogginess. His natural muscle expression and dimension is overwhelming. Foot quality should be locked in. The only question left is whether 128L will be safe to use on heifers. There is a little extra jam bred into him from his dam’s side, but between his small head, super short gestation, small BW, and being double bred calving ease, I want to believe that he may follow in his daddy’s footprints and calve easier than his EPDs suggest.

Well, well well, 35J has done it again! Two calves into her productive life and two bell ringers. There’s lots to be said about that kind of track record. Her first son, 4L, was our most popular bull last year. He was sought after by some of the biggest names in the purebred industry. While 4L was garnering all kinds of attention, we would tour the interested parties over to see 35J, and there standing beside her like a stout little brick shithouse, was 3M. I’m certain that this bull standing beside 35J sealed in much of the interest in his big brother last year. 3M has looked the part his entire life. He has the most incredible hair coat. Let me underscore that again - he is the hairriest bull I’ve ever seen, aside from club calves! His pictures and video can do the rest of the talking, he is stout. He is awfully good! AND he’s homo polled, homo black to boot! His tail was stepped on during fly season in July, I was not happy when I discovered that injury. A bull as good as him shouldn’t loose any parts! Needless to say, 3M was so impressive at a young age that we bred his dam back the same way. Guess what!?...She gave another cool bull calf. 35J’s flush sister also gave us a Caliber heifer last year. That heifer, a full sib in blood to 3M, is absolutely outstanding and was Cody Haney’s pick of our heifer calves last summer. One more thing... have you noted who 3M’s granddam is? Yes, Sage 506C. His kind of quality and predictability is no coincidence!

She is proving to be a potent producer, with many of her progeny rising to the top of our bull and heifer pens each year. She comes by her production ability honestly, as her dam has been an outstanding producer in the LaBatte program, putting many sons through their bull sale, plus two other daughters have sold for $14,750 to KT Ranches and $9000 to LaBatte’s. These flush brothers are the first ET sons we’ve offered from our 9144G donor. We selected her from a large group of R Plus two year olds with her first calf at side. She rose to the top of the pen easily with her excellent foot quality, most notably her ideal depth of heel, and strong udder. Her bold sweeping rib and capacity was another attraction point, her baldy face was a bonus, and her sire being 5015C was the cherry on top! Her first natural calf sold through this sale for $9750 to Triangle Stock Farms, AB. This cross with Caliber has proven to be a home run. I was hoping for heifers from this flush, but so far I’ve only got bulls! Caliber x 5015C can only mean good things from a maternal standpoint!

Lot 26 is the fancier, show stopper brother. He is smaller to moderate in frame, but he is very stout with a bold rib, thick hip, lots of width and strong top. He has a “look at me” presence and demands attention. He was really impressive at a young age and through summer. 103M was a popular favourite with visitors on pasture tours.

Lot 27 is the bigger framed option. He is one of the biggest framed bulls on offer, and also one of the longest. 112M was the heaviest bull in his contemporary group for WW and YW, with a ratio of 109 for both categories. Further, he was also the highest gaining bull in the entire offering, with a WW WPDA of 3.82 and YW WPDA of 3.45. He does have some tiny bits of white, just above his hooves, on both hind feet.

When IRCC sold the Fox Trot donor, she caught my attention with her gorgeous profile and show quality udder. The Boomshakalaka females are stunningelegant and feminine yet robust through their middle third. A few months later, I seized the opportunity to buy a pack of her embryos. I was praying for heifers - the vision of a Caliber x Fox Trot daughter still gets me excited! But, to my dismay, both embryos ended up as bulls, and the other brother got injured last summer. Needless to say, 67M will be a female producer. He is built much like Lot 26, being smaller framed but packed stout with muscle. He has a very pronounced hip and attractive profile. He is a very laid back, easy going bull. I suspect his daughters will be beautiful and he should breed on that money stripe.

We sold that heifer to Ryan King in November, as a feature Mandate bred in our Online Female and Genetics sale. I really can’t say enough good about Reeba in terms of her production ability. She is a bull producer and has put many impressive bulls through our sales over the years. 12M will serve to add length, add hip and add width of top to his calf crop. I loved that bull last year, but 3E truly outdid herself with 53M. He is one of the most complete bulls on offer and is exactly the type we ensvisioned when we purchased Mandate. He is sound, attractive through his lines but still stout and good haired, with Mandate’s signature herd bull head. He very much resembles Mandate himself, from when we purchased him for $160,000 a few springs ago. Tuition 3E is a beautiful, big bodied, excellent footed cow. She has been a top producer, having put several sons through our sale, with one daughter in production in our herd. She is very fertile, always rebreeding and calving at the same time each year. 3E has been earmarked to enter our donor program this spring. A flush to Caliber is planned for April and I am excited to expand her influence in our program! The best herd bull options are always backed by awesome momma cows. This cow ranks right up there with some of the most expensive donors we have purchased. Once again, a nice outcross pedgiree on this bull opens up a world of mating flexibility.

These Mandate bulls are all stamped the same. They are also consistently docile and easy going, just like big daddy himself. We have never seen another bull with feet as impressive as Mandate’s. The sheer size of his foot, depth of heel and perfectly parallel toes is simply as good as it gets. He has done an outstanding job of breeding on his foot quality also. The dam of this bull, Amber 42F, came to us as a frozen embryo from Lewis Farms. I wanted to bring in the influence of their Amber 205T donor cow, who was a matriarch in their red program. 42F has been a solid bull producer for us over the years, having put two top end bulls through our sale. A full sister to 21M sold through our Online Female & Genetics Sale two falls ago, going to our friends at ELD Farm in Ontario. She recently calved and Evan has given us very positive feedback on her. 42F was bred to Protest for her 2025 calf and he is another dandy at her side this year. She is a good milking cow with a strong udder and problem free feet.

RAINBOW RIVER MANDATE 89M

This bull comes from one of our longest standing cow families. The “Blackie” cow family as we affectionately know them, has stood the test of time by being honest production cattle. Problem free feet, strong udders, lots of capacity and rib shape to maximize their forage conversion and easy keeping ability, good dispositions, and of course, highly fertile. The dam of this bull is getting up in age, but still gets the job done each year. His granddam, great granddam, and great great granddam have all been flushed. If you’re looking to add no fuss genetics to your program, the kind that can handle some tough extremes, then I would suggest considering a bull like 89M, who comes from a long line of Interlake bred cattle. Cattle that can thrive in tough enviroments, without pampering, for many generations.

SEMEN IS STORED AT BOW VALLEY GENETICS, AB

This is your last opportunity to secure Mandate semen for the 2025 breeding season. If you’re wanting to break free from mainstream and get some different blood into your breeding program, here is your chance. Mandate is the outcross, foot improver, curve bender option that has been proving his worth more and more with each calf crop. His first sons that sold last spring showed us how sound, docile, deep bodied, big nutted and fertile he makes them. When his first set of bred heifers hit the sale scene this fall, he proved his ability to sire the right kind of females as well, with his three highest selling daughters fetching $17,000, $14,500 and $9500. The Mandate’s are like fine wine. They just keep getting better and better with age. His daughters here continued to evolve over time and now that they have entered production, we can confidently say that they met our very high expectations. Their udders are very good, they are very maternal and they milk very well. Mandate works great on power cows and heifers, and in my experience, he is much more heifer safe than his current EPDs suggest. We’ve used him on heifers for the last two years with not one assist. They are born small, easy and are extremely vigorous.

Calving Ease. I purchased 108M from the R Plus Dispersal as a frozen embryo. He offers a more outcross, calving ease pedigree and EPDs. His sire is the deceased black baldy calving ease sire, Hannibal, and his dam is the highly productive 3007A donor who needs no introduction. His maternal sister sold for a whopping $130,000 at the R Plus Dispersal and his maternal brother is the $150,000 Yuma, who is the sire of our very own $160,000 Mandate herd sire. I had seen 3007A in the flesh a few years before Marlin’s dispersal and she was a good footed, big bodied, tank of a cow. 108M’s EPDs read heifer safe, and based on his structure, I do think he will work in the heifer pen. I think his 91 lb BW was a little high due to the influence of his recipient dam. Lots of potential here!

96M is our only Crush son on offer. Crush 48K came to us as a frozen embryo from the Rancier program. I decided to retain Crush to use for one year before selling him as a two year old in our bull sale last spring. The Crush calves are nice fronted and bold in their center body. The dam of this bull was a never miss, get the job done, no fuss kind of cow. She had the biggest, fluffiest ears! We sold a beautiful daughter of hers to Drew Don Simmentals several years ago and have always regretted letting that heifer go, as we never did get another one to carry on the cow family. Poor 33C suffered a major injury two summers ago, but we decided to hang onto her to get 96M out of her, praying that he might be a heifer. Nope, no luck. 96M is now your opportunity to tie into our good 33C cow, with the bonus of being backed by the beautiful Flirt 624D donor. 33C was moderate in frame with a very functional udder that milked well. Despite her injury, she still did a good job raising 96M, a testament to her resiliency. The sire and dam of 96M were both extremely docile and strong footed. I would expect the same qualities from him.

We kick off the Sabrina ET calves with our only black Walk The Line son on offer. 31M is a full brother to our feature and second highest selling bull from last spring, Jackson 62L, who sold to Helgoe Simmentals in North Dakota for $11,750. 31M is very similar in design to his brother. He is long and extended with a clean front third on the side profile, but stout from behind with a big, thick hip and wide, flat top. He is good haired, sound and strong footed, and like all of our Sabrina progeny, he is extremely docile. He is a lovely bull to handle, just like his gorgeous momma! This mating with WTL x Sabrina is as consistent as it gets. We did have another flush brother to 31M in the pen, but he suffered a stifle injury over the winter and had to be culled. He too was a spitting image of 31M and 62L. All like peas in a pod. I’m still waiting on a heifer from this mating, but to my disappointment, so far they have all come as bulls! This is a maternally stacked mating that combines our gorgeous $25,000 Sabrina with the maternal strength offered from the $280,000 WTL. You really can’t go wrong here.

In my quest to make females, I decided to flush Sabrina to Boomshakalaka. He needs no introduction if you’ve been following the Indian River program over the years. Other than Liner 56U, I’m not sure that there is another seasoned bull that consistently makes such beautiful females. This cross succeeded in making some special females alright, with one being retained in-herd and two selling in our Online Female & Genetics Sale in November. One of them ended up being our high seller of the sale at $9500. The three bulls from this flush sell as Lots 38, 39 and 40.

Lot 38 has always been my personal favourite. He is bigger framed than his brothers, and actually one of the bigger framed bulls in the entire offering. He is long with a strong topline, clean fronted and fancy with a strong skull. I think he most resembles his sire. 19M has short ears that are a testament to his survivability and excellent vigour at birth. He was born early, unexpectedly, outside in -30 something terrible. By the time we realized he was out there, his ears were already frozen but remarkably, he was up and on his feet, had already nursed and was running around the pen. On all accounts, he should have froze to death. But, he is living proof of the importance of vigour in newborn calves!

As expected from this mating, all three of these Boom bulls will specialize in producing females.

59M is our lone Bentley x Sabrina bull, the only one born from his flush. Sabrina is famous for flushing huge numbers of embryos, so I hedged my bets and decided to try a split flush to Boomshakalaka and Bentley. The flush definitely leaned more to Boomshakalaka, as I only got two heifers and this one bull from Bentley. The heifer that I have retained in my keeper pen is gorgeous. She could wear a show halter. The other sister was a very nice heifer also and sold through our Online Female & Genetics Sale in November to Ferme Erisa in Quebec. Bentley has made a name for himself over the last few years, siring moderate framed, stout, soft made cattle and daughters with nice udders.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN THE WHY WE CHOOSE FARM GATE

1.Visit dlms.ca and follow the link to the DLMS FarmGate timed auction site www.farmgatetimedauctions.ca, click the LOGIN/ REGISTRATION button. First time users will select the REGISTER button from this page. Fill out the registration form to signup for a free user account. This program will send you text and email messages whenever there is activity on your favourite lots or someone challenges your proxy bid, and this is why you will be asked for both your current email and cell phone number. If you are a past participant in the Farm Gate Timed auctions, simply enter your user name and password to continue. This takes you to a list of both current and upcoming Farm Gate Auctions.

2. You can choose your favourite lots in this sale and the program will allow you to open either all sale lots or just your favourite lots on your screen. Any time there is active bidding on a lot you have identified on your favourite list, you will get a text and/or an email noting this activity.

3. The program allows you to place a proxy bid on any sale lot. This protects your interest in any lot of interest for you to a specified dollar value you set, when you may not be able to give 100% attention to the sale. For example, if the lot has a $2000 bid on it and you place a proxy bid of $3500 into the system, the computer will bid $2100 for you. But if some one else bids $2200, the computer will again bid for you, this time at $2300. The system will look after your interest to a maximum of $3500. If another bidder is on at $3600, your proxy will no longer be effective and you will no longer have the winning bid on this lot without once again logging in and manually bidding again, or moving your attention to a second lot of interest.

4. At closing time of the sale, the entire sale will extend bidding if a bid is placed on any lot in the sale. Any bid received after close time will extend the sale by the time listed on each sale. In most cases, the time gets shorter the longer in to extended bidding the sale is. When no bidding occurs for the extended time, the computer will declare the sale finished.

5. Following the sale, the Owner or Sale Manager will invoice all buyers in the sale. Please contact the seller with questions or to arrange delivery, pick up or shipping of your purchases.

For more info and assistance with bidding contact any of the sale contacts listed on the DLMS website.

FAQ:

WHAT IS RACEHORSE STYLE SALE CLOSE?

Racehorse style sale close is when the entire sale stays open in extended bidding. This type of sale allows you as the bidder to either continue bidding on one or more specific lots, or change to a different lot within the same sale if the bidding has gone in to extended bidding.

HOW WILL EXTENDED BIDDING WORK?

When we get to the close out end time, the clock for close extends by 5 minutes with any bid placed on any lot in the sale within that 5 minute window. This type of extended bidding turns the end time into more of a soft close. Extended bidding allows bidders to compete in lots like a real auction and gives all bidders the same time to make a decision. If you get outbid on your first lot of interest during extended bidding, you can switch to bid on your second lot of interest if desired. Always follow the countdown clock to see how much time remains in the sale you are interested in.

As our sale has grown in size over the years, we have contemplated different sale formats such as sticking with the Farm Gate Timed Auction, or switching to a live sale. After weighing our options, we still feel that the Farm Gate sale is our preferred method of selling. Here’s our top reasons why:

1. NO SALE ORDER

The racehorse style sale allows us to eliminate that dreaded sale order that causes so much stress on sale day! We have all been in that position where our #1 pick is listed after our #2 pick in the sale order. Decisions... decisions... do I risk not bidding on my #2 in order to wait to try on #1? We’ve all done it, and when our #1 choice goes way out of budget, we are kicking ourselves for not just buying #2 when we had the chance!

With Farm Gate, all lots sell at the same time and you have the flexibilty to start bidding on your favorite lot, then switch to your #2 pick (or your #3, or #4, etc) if your #1 pick goes out of budget. This gives all of our customers the best chance at owning the right female or genetic opportunity for their program.

2. MORE ONE-ON-ONE INTERACTION

When I first started selling bulls, I sold via private treaty from our yard. My favorite part about private treaty sales was getting to know my customers on a more personal level. Learning about your program and individual preference in cattle in turn builds a closer relationship between the customer and myself, and also gives me the insight to recommend females that would be best suited for your program. This is especially valuable with sight unseen purchases.

I found that when we switched to a live sale format, much of that one-on-one interaction was lost. Sale day was always such a blur and I really disliked not having enough time to talk to customers about their needs prior to the sale starting. Not all customers choose to interact directly with me prior to the sale with using Farm Gate either, and that’s perfectly ok! But I find that it does increase the amount of interaction between my customers and myself, which I really like.

3. BETTER FOR THE CATTLE

Less stress on the cattle is a major advantage of the online sale format. The heifers get to stay at home, in their environment, on familiar feed and don’t risk getting sick or injured while being moved or sorted for a live sale. Compared to live sales that take place off-farm, there is also no biosecurity risk with the cattle picking up an illness or disease that might exist at a public sale barn. Happier, healthier heifers are better for me, my cattle and my customers.

4. CUSTOMER FEEDBACK HAS BEEN POSITIVE

The old saying, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” applies here. Covid forced us to start with the online Farm Gate sale, but we have received so much positive feedback since making the switch that we want to stick with a good thing! The flexibility to come view the offering at your leisure, to bid from the comfort of your home (or while on the road, or at a meeting, a party or your kid’s hockey game) and even just the fun of the thrill when you never know if an opposing bid is going to give you that “You’ve Been Outbid” warning!

At no time will the seller’s liability exceed the purchase price of the animal.

EXCEPTION TO BREEDER GUARANTEE: This guarantee does not cover death, injury, sickness or mismanagement. No guarantee is given that a bull’s semen will freeze. In cases where the animal is subjected to any hormonal or surgical reproduction techniques (i.e. embryo transfer) after the sale, the guarantee shall be null and void. Animals cannot be returned to Rainbow River Simmentals if not in a sound, healthy condition.

HEALTH: All animals have been on a total herd health program since birth. Specific details are available upon request. It is the buyer’s responsibility to determine health requirements for importing any animal into their province or state.

LIABILITIES: All persons attending the sale, or viewing cattle on-farm prior to the sale, do so at their own risk and the seller assumes no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents occurring in or about the premises.

RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS: The above terms and conditions of the sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller, and be equally binding to both.
