Last week, we impounded a vehicle for sustained loss of traction (burnouts) at Nau Mai/SH23 and the town end of Wainui Road. We know this isn't the only vehicle involved in burnouts and we'll continue our efforts to remove these dangerous vehicles and drivers from our roads. This particular vehicle hadn't had a WOF since 2023, making it a clear risk. Removing it from the road is a win for both us and the community. We'll continue to target these vehicles to ensure safer roads for everyone. After seizure, this post was published on Facebook to raise awareness:
"Police in Raglan have executed a warrant today, seizing a vehicle that

This antisocial road behaviour has frustrated members of the Raglan community for some time, due to the marks left on the road, as well as the rubber and rubbish left each night this occurs.
Antisocial road user activity not only puts the drivers at risk, but also passengers, bystanders, and members of the public.
Police remain committed to holding offenders of this nature to account. We wish to thank the members of the Raglan community for their reporting of these incidents and remind anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage of any antisocial road user behaviour to contact Police.
If Police are unable to take action at the time, we will ensure that follow-up enforcement action will be taken.

Doug Ford’s eye-catching Raglan Club mural was recently awarded Resene Best Professional Mural 2024.
Using the club’s existing windows, Doug’s 3-D mural gives the viewer a peek through a series of windows at various people in different social situations.
There’s a lot to see in each of the scenes and if you look close enough you might even recognise some of the characters.
Although Doug likes to paint from his mind’s eye, he is influenced by what he sees around him, and some of the mural’s characters will have hints of the people he meets.
“There are a few sneaky portraits in there,” he laughs. “Rob who used to be at Matapihi Gallery is in there playing darts.”
The scenarios might not be a true representation of the club, but it does capture the role it plays in the community of bringing people together.
“The different things the club does come through, with the billiards, the darts, the music, dancing, and the food,” he says.
This is the third time Doug has entered the Resene Mural Masterpieces competition and it’s his second win in the professional category. He’s a big fan of Resene paints so it made sense to enter and the 50 percent off the paint helps with the costs of producing large-scale artworks.
“Once upon a time, Resene were the ones who brought colour into the house paint and they could make every colour and it is always a decent quality,” he says.
Doug has close to 200 murals of all shapes and sizes under his paint brush. He painted his first mural in the 1989 – 'Cafe de Circus' in Wellington – not long after finishing a visual communication design degree at Wellington Polytech.
From café walls and churches to traffic signal boxes and school buildings, Doug has left his mark on al fresco canvases around the world.
It was how he stayed in New York rentfree. “Every time I was back in New York, I stayed in a hotel where you paint for accommodation. One time I was there for about seven months and I was just painting at the hotel, street hustling, and selling artwork in the market.”
Doug reckons there’s about three month’s work in the club mural and he’s grateful he was able to spread the work out over a year.
“Some days I would just go out and paint cheekbones, noses and eyeballs, just for an hour or two, because the club have always let me get on with it in my time.”
When he’s not painting murals, you can find Doug at Made Gallery, which is conveniently next door to the club. And if you’re a fan of the mural, Made is the place to find Doug’s paintings, and other quirky artworks for sale.
As we sit on the club’s deck looking at the mural, Doug’s keen eye catches things in the mural he reckons need a bit of work.
“See the lady with the cup of tea and the empty vase on the table; she definitely needs a rose in that vase,” he laughs.
He’s also eyeing up the wall space above the mural where he envisions expanding the artwork into the sky.
“What could make it look right is to extend the sky up to a dark royal blue and have the top of the buildings peeking through some balustrades.”

Aliteralarmy of volunteers has come from near and far on a mission to breathe new life into the historic Te Mata Hall.
Not only has the local community rallied behind the cause but a team of four carpenters from the New Zealand Army’s Linton base near Palmerston North recently arrived to help get the job done.
The soldiers have been camping on site as they work to reclad the 120-year-old building which project leader and resident builder Dan Grimshaw says is still a “well used” facility in this small rural settlement.
Even before the cavalry arrived, local volunteers were on the job water-blasting the hall’s ageing weatherboards for possible reuse while others were inside priming and painting newly delivered weatherboards for the front and back of the hall, which showed the worst signs of wear and tear.
Meantime many in the community got behind the project by donating home baking and other produce to feed the army quartet during their two-week sortie north.
It all began back at the end of last year when The Hits radio station ran a competition in conjunction with Resene ColourShops to give a deserving public hall a spruce-up.
News of the contest spread fast among the community and Te Mata Hall was entered into the comp. Locals voted en masse online, Dan told the Chronicle, and by sheer numbers and enthusiasm “blew the competition out of the water”
An ex-serviceman, Dan rang a mate in the army to arrange help with the spruce-up which – on closer inspection – had become more of a restoration. He drafted a proposal and sent photos to the army to “generate an appetite” for the project.
“We really needed the army working continuous days to get things done rather than rely totally on volunteers having to juggle day jobs,” he explained.
A committee was formed, a constitution created, a bank account opened and an online Givealittle page set up. With a goal of $50,000, fundraising began in earnest to cover the cost of repairs.
Local businesses offered discounted materials and volunteers came out of the woodwork, committing time and effort, while Resene Paints supplied the paint and painting equipment thanks to the radio competition which had prompted the makeover.
But there was much more to be done than giving the hall a fresh coat of paint.
Weatherboards needed replacing, as did the roof. Windows, cladding and structural support also needed attention. “We’re working hard to honour the hall’s original character while giving it the protection and care it needs,” the committee agreed.
So once the army guys had moved in –and enjoyed a welcome dinner put on in the hall by the locals – they got to work, having set their camp stretchers up inside the 1905 building with full use of its facilities.
“They’re soldiers, they can rough it,” Dan laughed. “It’s The Ritz!”
Recladding was the first stage of the project during the 10 working days they had, with reroofing to follow if the community’s fundraising was on target. And Dan was cautiously optimistic last week. “We’re not far off,” he said just one day into the job.
Funds raised were to go towards essential expenses including scaffolding, shrouding –to ensure all-weather work – weatherboard replacement, bracing, reroofing, re-spouting and window repairs.
A recent community dinner and family fun day at Te Mata Domain – organised by the hall makeover committee – was a huge success, boosting the bank balance by more than $2,700.
Mata Hall has been in need of a much-needed makeover.
And Raglan Four Square came to the party the weekend the army arrived, with bags of breakfast foods and milk to help the soldiers’ start to their days.
Now the residents of Te Mata are looking forward to gathering again in their revitalised hall which has served as a hub over the generations and is still used today for everything from weddings and funerals to ping-pong, yoga and the odd good oldfashioned hoedown.

2025 sees our Board try a few new things; well, many new things! We are bringing back small-business-breakfasts. We are bringing back BA4’s (Business After 4pm) and we have webinars for those of you that find it hard to attend in-person events.
Our Raglan Business Chamber Board and Team have developed a marketing, media and events plan. We are sharing the load of this mahi; working as a team we intend to deliver more to our local business community.
Please follow our social media at the IG handle @ raglanbusinesschamber and support the businesses we are spotlighting by liking and sharing the posts. If you are a Raglan Business Chamber member and you would like to be featured on our socials then get in touch!
And of course we have to say a HUGE THANKS to the wāhine that attended our International Women’s Day. The bodacious Birgit Junni-Rietkerk from Booty Wonderland hosted the panel; Leonie Anholts, Marisa Twentyman, Lucy Sparks, and Karin Bettley. We heard their stories, goals, as well as the harsh realities of being a woman in business. Those of us that attended experienced many ‘goosebump moments’ and tears of gratitude as we realised how much has changed in just a few generations. Thanks to The Wharf for their expert hospitality, and aroha to all who attended.

Raglandelivered sunshine, smiles and laughter at Papahua Domain, Marine Parade, on Sunday, 2 March, as locals celebrated Children's Day.
The community event created the perfect atmosphere for young families and grandparents to enjoy a relaxing day at the beach, topped off with refreshing swims to cool down in the afternoon.
Attendees enjoyed free rides and treats, including a sausage sizzle, popcorn, ice blocks, bananas and cold drinks generously provided by Fresh Choice Raglan, Elixir Social Agency, Kama West Coast, Sweet As Popcorn and the Harbour View Hotel.
The diversity of cultures represented at the event highlighted the positive message that treating all children equally helps nurture inclusivity and understanding.
Special recognition went to the event marshals, who achieved Children's Day Event certification, and the Waikato District Council team, whose combined efforts demonstrated strong community collaboration. Don Rangiaawha was also acknowledged for blessing the event's opening.
Organisers praised everyone's contributions, saying it was an excellent example of local mahi.

TeamSquad are breathing life back into ‘old school’ sounds, with a quirky twist that’s sure to get you on the dancefloor.
The trio of local musos – Ruth Power (keys/vocals), Odhran Devlin (bass/backing vocals) and Kane Power (drums/sampler/ backing vocals) – are about to release their third EP at The Yard on Saturday, March 22.
Thanks to funding by NZ On Air, the self-described prog-soul/post-disco band has upped the production value on the ‘Apocalipsync’ EP.
“With the NZ on Air Development Fund, we were matched with a producer, and you get together and you write some songs, so we did that with our good friend, Lora Thompson,” Kane says.
“We ended up at The Porch Studio in Rotokauri, recording with Regan McKinnon. We came up with some really good songs for the project, which we knew we had to release. So we took them to Evan Pope (Kora, Threat.Meet.Protocol) for mixing, and then to Andrei Eremin (Hiatus Kaiyote, Tash Sultana) for mastering. That became our EP.”
They released their first song ‘Violet’ in January and more recently released ‘Apocalipsync’, which is the title track from the EP.
“We're really proud of it. We worked really hard on it, and it's definitely a purposeful shift in direction from us into more grooveoriented music,” he says.
Influenced by the sounds of Chaka Khan, Prince and Stevie Wonder, for TeamSquad making music is all about having fun and getting people dancing.
“We're not out there trying to climb the charts with our music and if it's not fun, we don't do it. We love playing shows where lots of people are dancing and also having fun, and feeding us back that energy.”
And, so far, the audiences are loving it.
“It's been going off live, totally night and day to the shows that we were playing before. We’ve been testing the new songs at the shows and they're just going down a total treat. We've got dancefloors moving, and that's the sort of instant feedback you want,” Kane says.
Husband and wife team Kane and Ruth were both career musicians in London from 2009 to 2016 and came back to New Zealand burnt out by the touring grind.
“We did a lot of shows, which was exhausting and fun and amazing. And we released a lot of cool music but we came back burnt to a crisp. I'm super glad that now the pressure is off, it has become fun again.”
Kane met Odhran while playing together in local jazz band Sticky Chicken. He was originally a stand-in when Kane and Ruth were down a bass player but he’s now an integral member of TeamSquad. Odhran is a familiar figure on the local music scene,
having played in many bands including the legendary Mighty, Mighty.
“We were invited to play the Sanctuary Sounds festival in the Hawkes Bay and so I asked Odhran to fill in. We had a really good time, and we ended up doing a recorded live session together at the Old School, and after that point he was part of TeamSquad.”
Their website bio gives a good indication of what to expect from a TeamSquad live gig
with words like ‘80s’ Sci-fi hallucinations, abandoned disco dance-floors, face-melting synths, funk bass hooks and dystopian dancebeats’.
But as the trio say ‘no one ever danced to a description’, you really just got to listen to it. Head to The Yard on Saturday, March 22 for the Apocalipsync EP release party –ticket sales at www.undertheradar.co.nz.

There ‘s been activity of a different sort at Raglan Bowling Club these past couple of weeks with about a dozen keen volunteers swapping bowls for brushes to give the ageing clubrooms a timely lick of paint.
The fibrolite building is now almost dazzlingly white with blue trim – to match the players’ uniforms – while the wooden fence at the entranceway is a bold blue.
The clubrooms were in need of a “freshen-up”, club president Alan Price told the Chronicle of the facility, which is used frequently by local bowlers and also twice a month by the local Crop Swap group. “We wanted it to look like something the club and community could be proud of.”
Built sometime after 1921 when the bowling club was formed, the building has been looking a bit rundown and drab, Alan added.
So the committee suggested a spruceup to the Raglan Club, of which it is an adjunct or member group.
“They (Raglan Club) provided the paint and materials,” said Alan, “and we (the bowling club) came up with the labour.”
Local builder Craig Wallace of CJW Build supplied mobile scaffolding which extended to five meters. “That made the job so much easier and saved money,” said committee member John Lenihan.
Crop Swap Raglan brought morning teas along for the dozen or so committee members and two casual players – Dermot and Bud, from Twilight Bowls – who all met up several times a week to get the work done within a fortnight.
Committee members agree the now freshened-up clubrooms are “a great way to promote the sport to the community”. While lots of bowling clubs struggle to attract members, they say, the Raglan club has the highest rate of growth among Waikato clubs.
That’s based on the high number of players who have joined in the last five years, thanks to its “extremely popular” Twillight Bowls sessions on Tuesday nights.
And those numbers reflect the future of the club, Alan insists, adding it’s also “a very convivial, welcoming club”.
Ross Turner is the club’s longest playing member, and has won almost 50 championships since 1978.
Whaaingaroa Palestine Solidarity are holding a silent vigil on Saturday 22 March on Bow Street, to bring local people’s attention to the desperate situation in Gaza and parts of the Occupied West Bank, Syria and Lebanon. We invite anyone supportive to join us.
“We need to keep talking about the situation of Palestinians as, although the Israeli army invasion and constant bombings have mostly stopped in Gaza, Palestine is still under siege and occupied”, said Gillian Marie from the local Palestinian support group. All borders are closed, and at this time no aid of any kind is getting through to the over two million people living in Gaza in the ruins of their homes, towns, villages, businesses, farms, markets, hospitals, schools, universities, and civil services.
“With no access to clean water or sewage disposal, no food, fuel, and few medical supplies, conditions are genocidal”, she added. The situation in the Israeli Occupied Palestinian West Bank has also deteriorated, with the demolition of houses and forced removal of over 40,000 Palestinians since late February. These Palestinians have no place to go.
Palestinian supporters throughout the country have requested that the NZ government raise these issues with the Israeli government, and speak out against US President Trump’s plans for Gaza and turn it into a holiday resort for the rich. A further request is that the government enable Palestinians in Gaza to re-unite with their family members living in Aotearoa, providing a special visa as has been done for Ukrainians reuniting with family members here. Come along on Saturday 22 March, 11am.

New home on 24 hectares
Here is a fantastic opportunity to own a decent parcel of land with a near new home, so near new in fact, the home still retains that new home smell. The near new Signature Home sits on the slopes of Mt Karioi and has views that need to be seen and felt to realise just how special they are. Consisting of 4 bedrooms, master with ensuite, large open plan dining/ kitchen, a generous lounge and double internal access garaging, the slate is clean for the next owners to turn this house into a home. The land could do with some fencing and planting here and there.
