As summer returns, so too does our annual magazine, created to introduce visitors to Whāingaroa and the rich mix of experiences that make this place special. From creative spaces and live music to food, wine, art, and wellbeing, this issue captures the energy and diversity of our community as we head into the 2025/2026 summer season.

Our cover story shines a spotlight on local, up-and-coming young music star Star Knuiman, who will take to the stage at Soundsplash this January. The festival also marks a major milestone, celebrating 25 years since its beginnings in 2001, and remains a defining part of Raglan’s summer identity.

Elsewhere in the magazine, we explore the transformation of The Factory Raglan on Wallis Street, where history and creativity are being woven together to create a thriving hub for business and the arts. Live music lovers can also look forward to an exciting season at the Harbour View Hotel, with the iconic venue set to host a packed summer programme.

With this in mind, pack some extra patience to share as you make your way around our community - relax at the one lane car bridge, let traffic through, from both sides. Raglan is a low speed limit town, make the most of it, put yourself on cruise time, chill out and be mindful of walkers and bikers - or even better, park your car up and walk. Enjoy our footpath ‘Te Ara ki Tai’ that will take you to Wainui Bush Park and on to our mountain park, ‘Te Ara Kakariki’. Thinking about parking in town? Raglan Recreation Reserve (rugby grounds) on Cross Street has plenty of parking - 140 spots and it’s only a 10 minute walk to town or 15 minutes to the wharf. Papahua summer overflow parking on the soccer field is a short walk into town (Marine Parade). Overflow parking will be open over summer at Ngarunui. Remember to bring your reusables; cloth shopping bags, drink bottle, coffee mug and your containers, all great for shopping or grabbing a take away coffee. Some of my favourite things:

If you’re visiting our town, we want you to leave with happy memories of your stay in Raglan. Help make it a wonderful summer for everyone • Be responsible. Do not drink and drive. Make plans ahead of time if you are going to be drinking. • Be careful. Don’t leave property inside your cars. Lock your cars and your homes. • Be patient on the roads. Everyone deserves to reach their destination. Give yourself plenty of driving time and enjoy the journey.

The seasonal alcohol ban period has been lengthened. • New extended period: 23 December – 10 February each year • Any breach of liquor ban can result in a $250.00 instant fine. Although this time of year is known as the festive season, for some, it is far from festive. It can be a very lonely, sad time of the year. Just a reminder to keep an eye on your family, friends and neighbours. Check up on them. Ask them if they are OK, and if they are not, encourage them to seek help from experts. urfers at Ngarunui Beach, Manu Bay and Whale Bay will see ‘Surfers Code’ signs near the water.

Thanks to local funding by the Raglan Point Boardriders and a grant from Waikato District Council, these signs can be seen at key surf points. With the water getting busier and busier, knowing the rules and practising safety in the water is crucial here on the west coast. The main theme of the Surfers Code in Raglan: Respect the environment, the ocean and most importantly, each other. The infamous waves at Manu Bay attract surfers from around the world. But before you jump in the water just to say “I’ve surfed Manu Bay in Raglan”, take time to think if you really should be surfing there.

RAGLAN VOLUNTEER COASTGUARD

hinking about checking out those epic fishing spots just across the bar? From the Manukau and Tairua to Raglan and Waimakariri, Coastguard volunteers responded to a number of bar crossing accidents last summer, several of which saw people not return home to their loved ones.

Over summer, Coastguard volunteers will be out on the water ensuring Kiwis can enjoy our beautiful waterways safely and with confidence. COMPREHENSIVE SKIN CHECKS We offer dedicated skin check consultations; this involves a full body skin examination using a dermatoscope (a polarised magnifying lens). Photos of any suspicious skin lesions are taken and, when necessary, these are sent to a dermatologist for further assessment. This appointment takes 30 minutes and costs $190. We also provide minor surgery to remove suspicious lesions; additional charges will apply for the removal of any suspicious lesions unless you are a Community Service Card Holder.

PRIMARY RESPONSE IN MEDICAL EMERGENCIES (PRIME) UPDATE • The PRIME service is a rural-focused emergency response programme run by St John, designed to support ambulance services. • When a 111 call comes through for timesensitive emergencies, a locally-based PRIME responder is despatched alongside St Johns ambulance crew to provide urgent on-the-spot treatment. • PRIME responders carry special equipment and have completed dedicated training in trauma, acute medical emergencies, resuscitation, triage, and patient stabilisation in rural contexts. • It’s a co-response model: In Raglan PRIME works alongside St John Ambulance, NZ Police, Fire & Emergency NZ, Coastguard NZ and Surf Lifesaving NZ. We are also fortunate to be supported by our local District Nurses, Midwives and the extended team at Raglan Medical.

tar Knuiman’s music career is on the rise, with her debut single set to hit streaming platforms on January 8. The track, When You’re Around, is a hazy, dreamy slice of bedroom pop written in collaboration with wellknown local artists Muroki and Reiki Ruawai. “We worked on When You’re Around during a six-hour session, and it was my first-ever writing and recording session,” Star says. “I’ve always really looked up to them, so it’s cool to have created something together.” While this debut leans toward a summery pop sound, the 17-yearold Ruapuke singer says she’s still discovering her musical identity. “I’m only just finding my sound. This one’s more poppy, but I don’t think I’m heading down the pop route. I love soul voices, but I also like rock music.” Star will continue working with Muroki and Reiki toward an upcoming EP. “When Muroki comes back, we’ll work on more songs, which is cool.” Her first major live performance outside of school was at Soundsplash 2025, where she earned a place through the Whāingaroa Talent Factory youth showcase. She’s set to return to Soundsplash in 2026 with fresh material.

“I’m aiming for five originals and three covers – and eventually a full set of my own songs.” Star grew up in a musical household, one of three siblings encouraged to pick up instruments. “I started guitar lessons with Ash Knox when I was nine – and I was the one who stuck with it,” she laughs. Her love of performing crystallised at her first-ever concert, Six60. “I was right at the front and realised, ‘this is what I want to do’.” Her earliest memory on stage goes back to a Te Mata School end-of-year concert. “I performed Hold Back the River by James Bay when I was nine – and once I performed as ‘Lady Star Star’ instead of Lady Gaga,” she laughs. Although she describes herself as quiet and shy, performing feels like home. “It feels natural to be on stage – I obviously get really scared before, but once I’m up there it just feels right.” A music video for When You’re Around produced by We Are 2113 will accompany the release, filmed on her parents’ farm and in the studio. “I have a few ideas – maybe the band in the paddock – but mostly I’ll leave it to the experts.” Star will perform with backing band during Soundsplash, Friday 16 – Sunday 18 January.

GREEN WAVE SURF SCHOOL Learn to surf!

he Local Rag caught up with Bing Lyons from Greenwave to hear about their surf school offerings this summer. Green Wave has been up and running for a while now. Give us an update — how’s it all going? We’re heading into our 10th summer, and it’s amazing to see how far things have come. The support from the Raglan community has been incredible, and each year we’re welcoming more international visitors — families, solo travellers, and first-time surfers from all over the world. We love teaching and sharing something we’re passionate about with our students. And we’ve had phenomenal feedback as well - we’ve become the top-rated surf school in New Zealand. It’s nice to know that our students are having such a positive experience.

Who’s involved with the instructing? Green Wave is run by the three of us — Zennor Wernham, Wes Rogers and Bing Lyons — with over 30 years of combined coaching experience. We’re also supported by a talented crew of local surfers and former Raglan Surf Academy students who step in during the busy months. Their energy and knowledge are a huge part of what makes our lessons special. People say surfing is difficult. What do you tell someone who’s never tried it? Will they get up? Absolutely. Everyone stands up during our lessons. We offer a stand-up guarantee or your money back, and so far we’ve kept a 100% success rate. We create a relaxed, fun environment so even nervous first-timers feel comfortable. Before long, they’re up on their

feet, riding a wave — with free photos to capture the moment. Do you offer anything for families? Yes — We work with families from both New Zealand and overseas, creating sessions where everyone can learn together at their own pace. It’s a great way to share the excitement of surfing, whether you’re all beginners or looking to build confidence in the water. You offer daily lessons. Are they always at the same time? Our lessons are scheduled around the tides and conditions each day. Choosing the safest time and tide makes a huge difference, especially for beginners, so we plan everything with that in mind. During summer we often run multiple sessions daily to keep groups

aglan has always been shaped by its people. The waves, the whānau, the long summer days, and the creative energy that runs through our coastal town. For us at Raglan Surf Co, that spirit lives in our boards, our tees, and the stories behind them.

Before Raglan Surf Co became known for its clothing range, it was known for surfboards. Our founder, Craig Hughes, was first a surfboard shaper whose creativity came to life through the boards he crafted and the artwork he painted on them. Many of his bold, vibrant boards are still on display in the shop today and continue to influence our style. Over time, our clothing became recognised for the Raglan Surf Co Block logo, which remains one of our most popular designs. Around 2020, we began bringing more of Craig’s artwork back into the racks through selected prints and limited runs, placing his illustrations alongside our long standing logo pieces. Our screenprints have always been designed in house, with most featuring Craig’s original artwork. One of the most memorable designs we revived is the Diamond print. We found an old envelope of tiny transparency sheets, each holding a different layer of the artwork. Working with our screen printer, we pieced the Diamond back together and returned it to the line up alongside Craig’s Hellbat, Wave Graffiti, and the kids Surf Co wave print. Keeping these designs alive remains a core part of who we are. As Raglan has grown, so has the creative talent within our community. It felt like the right moment to celebrate local artists in a way that continues our tradition of keeping prints crafted close to home. This led to the Raglan Surf Co Artist Collaboration Series. The series began with past staff member Lucy Galbraith, whose print brought her vision of Manu Bay to

life in a fresh and playful way. This summer, we released our second collaboration featuring the hand drawn work of Kyoko Shirai. Wanting to capture the familiar west coast view in a new way, Kyoko played with colour, patterns, and movement in the sky to create a wave design that feels uniquely her own and distinctly Raglan. Craig’s designs remain central to our identity, and the collaboration series sits alongside that legacy. As you wander through town this summer, swing by the shop to see the Kyoko and Lucy collabs alongside Craig’s original designs, including the Bullet tee which has just returned to the line up. oundsplash is celebrating 25 years since its inception, marking a milestone for a festival that has grown from a small, community-led event into one of Aotearoa’s most distinctive summer gatherings, while remaining deeply rooted in Raglan and its values.

The festival traces its beginnings back to 2001, when local musicians Brian and Naomi, of Cornerstone Roots fame, launched the very first Soundsplash at the Raglan Town Hall. Originally known as the Soundsplash Eco Reggae Festival, the event was conceived with a strong sense of purpose. From the outset, it combined music with films, workshops and stalls, aiming not just to entertain but to reflect, influence and stimulate positive change in society. Following the success of its inaugural event, Soundsplash moved to Wainui Reserve, drawn by the site’s natural amphitheatre and connection to the landscape. Over the following years, the festival helped put Raglan on the international touring map, and sparked a trend of reggaeinfluenced festivals across the motu, hosting respected reggae artists such as Third World and Junior Kelly. By 2008, Soundsplash went on hiatus, before returning in 2015 with renewed energy and a new generation of festival goers. Fast forward to recent years and Soundsplash has continued to evolve, bringing both local and international headliners to the coastal community. Each summer, the amphitheatre buzzes with an excited crowd, including many young people experiencing their first ever music festival. The atmosphere captures what Soundsplash has always aimed to create: a shared summer moment built around music, connection and place. Behind the scenes, the scale of the event reflects an enormous collective effort. From organisers and contractors to volunteers and clean-up crews, the majority of those involved are members of the Raglan community. Each year, locals come together to transform green fields into a fully functioning festival site, ensuring everyone has a safe and positive experience in town. Contributions range from mowing and site preparation to catering, stage setup, security and welfare support. As with any large-scale summer festival, Soundsplash brings challenges alongside celebration. Yet many of the stories to emerge each year are positive ones, with residents

and volunteers helping visitors in need and contributing to the overall good vibe around the venue and town. One of the most heartening aspects of Soundsplash’s 25-year journey is seeing the next generation step into leadership roles. A number of festival departments are now headed by familiar local faces, alongside young people who once attended Soundsplash as punters and are now helping to shape its future. Emerging young locals such as Kaea Ruawai, Wairua (Stormie) Kereopa, Savon Tovio-Smith and Lexie Holmes represent that next wave, carrying the kaupapa forward while adding their own perspectives. As the team looks ahead, Soundsplash 2026 will run from 16 to 18 January, a period when Raglan’s population traditionally swells over summer. Organisers acknowledge the pressure this places on the town and remain committed to continually enhancing the festival experience, while appreciating the patience and support of the wider community during busy periods. The Soundsplash team is proud to mark 25 years of creating a unique environment where live music, art and culture come together. Soundsplash extends its thanks to the Whāingaroa community, artists, attendees, vendors, volunteers and crew. RAGLAN ROCK FINDS NEW MOMENTUM UNDER FAMILIAR LEADERSHIP

aglan Rock may have farewelled its founder, Gareth Jones, but the business has gained fresh energy with long-time guide Harry Series now at the helm. Harry is no newcomer to Raglan Rock. He joined the guiding team in 2017 and has effectively been running the adventure operation for the past five years. “Gareth has been in the background but I’ve been running the day-to-day stuff,” Harry says. When Gareth moved to Melbourne in August, Harry decided to take the plunge and buy the business. “It’s been pretty cool – scary but exciting – and Gareth’s happy to see the legacy he built continue.” Raglan Rock began in 2012 when Gareth swapped surfing for climbing and started taking visitors on rock-climbing tours. The business has since expanded to include canyoning, caving and outdoor education programmes for school groups. Added to Raglan Rock’s growth is a new van – no more seeing the old red van around town – and a fresh set of wetsuits. Harry has played a major role in that growth, particularly around designing school camps. “We saw a gap in the market about seven years ago, where school groups wanted to come here but no one was facilitating the whole experience,” he says. Raglan Rock now handles the logistics for busy teachers – from booking accommodation at the

holiday park and organising catering by Colin Chung to partnering with local surf and kayak operators for a full slate of Raglan-based outdoor adventures. “The first school camp we organised was for Scott’s College in Wellington, and they still come every year in March.” Harry is also eager to continue strengthening ties with Raglan Area School by offering outdoor education opportunities and pathways into tourism careers. “This summer, Star Knuiman is joining us. She recently went out with the team to do rescue training in the canyon, which is really cool,” he says. “The goal is to bring in more people like Star because there just aren’t enough Kiwis doing this work.” Outdoor Education (OED) plays a key part in developing those pathways, Harry says. “We’ve got a strong relationship with the school, and we’ve been doing a lot of work to push back against the government’s proposal to get rid of OED.” Looking ahead, Harry hopes to introduce zip-lining in the canyon. “The plan is to have twin zip lines running across one of the waterfalls.” And while Raglan Rock is a hit with visitors, Harry wants locals to know they’re always welcome too. Whether you’re keen to try canyoning for the first time, explore the caves, or simply see a different side of Whāingaroa, he says there’s no better way to experience Raglan’s natural playground than to get out there with the local team who know it best.

Volunteers consistently refer travellers to independent cafés, boutiques, galleries, and accommodation providers, ensuring that holiday spending circulates within the town. he Raglan Naturally Toitū Whaingaroa project team (Lisa Thomson, Lara Sweetman & Michelle Levy) are gearing up to help the Whaingaroa community celebrate Waitangi Day in 2026

As with past years, the Raglan Town Hall (10am2pm) will be a central space on February 6th for our community and visitors to Whaingaroa to affirm, acknowledge and learn about Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its importance to our local community and to our nation. Waitangi Day Whaingaroa 2026 emphasises the importance of celebrating kotahitanga. We remain committed to the call for kotahitanga by the late Kīngi Tūheitia, and to the aspirations of prominent Ngāti Māhanga rangatira and Te Tiriti signatory, Te Awaitaia. Waitangi Day 2026 will celebrate and support Whaingaroa in their ongoing journey towards the true partnership envisaged in Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Supported with a grant from Manatū Taonga – Ministry for Culture and Heritage, Celebrating Kotahitanga: Waitangi Day Whaingaroa 2026 includes learning and celebrating with some of the rich and diverse Tāngata Tiriti communities who call Whaingaroa home. We will be sharing translated copies of Te Tiriti in a range of languages and hopefully there will be some tasty treats to sample as well.

There will be workshops and demonstrations from expert local practitioners. This includes creating your own purerehua (traditional Māori musical instrument); Mau Rākau (Māori weaponry); and rāranga (weaving) with members of Ngaa Hua o Te Rito. If we are lucky, Whaea Ruihi may be there with her ukelele to lead waiata sing-alongs throughout the day. If you’re looking to be creative, Toitū Whaingaroa are looking for community input into what our very own ‘Whaingaroa Kotahitanga-Te Tiriti inspired’ flag could look like. We’ll have the pens, markers and papers so you can share your amazing ideas. The Whaingaroa ‘Forum Tent’ will host a range of activities. There will be a panel discussion sharing diverse perspectives about how support and commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi can be demonstrated in our daily lives. There will also be a special screening of the locally-made full length feature documentary Tirohia Karioi, as well as a live feed from Waitangi if available. And of course there is kai. Leo McQueen and his hangi crew will be providing another delicious Waitangi Day hangi for our community to purchase for lunch. And the Town Hall supper room will have delicious home baking to enjoy with a cup of tea. We hope you’ll come and join us on February 6th at the Raglan Town Hall for a day of community connection, hope and celebration. This project honours Ngāti Māhanga rangatira and Waitangi signatory Wiremu Neera Te Awaitaia, whose leadership and legacy continues to inspire unity today. Toreparu Hūrepo (Wetland) Wānanga: Teachers from Waitetuna and Te Mata Schools visited Mōtakotako Marae to learn about Toreparu Wetland ecology and ancestral stories, linking curriculum learning with local knowledge and care for the taiao.

Moved by global inequities observed during his travels, Yaniv created colouring books designed to draw people into a reflective, mindful space that nurtures environmental and social awareness and inspires positive action. He recently hosted an interactive Community Canvas workshop during Raglan Arts Weekend, making creative experiences accessible to individuals, tamariki, and whānau alike. Yaniv has exhibited in over 45 galleries, including in Paris and New York, where he represented New Zealand at the United Nations. He has sold more than 200 paintings and received over 20 awards. At just 16, Yaniv became the youngest guest artist invited to the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts in Wellington. In addition to the awesome portfolios of work, we had immersive installations, live public art murals, educational demos, sculpture walks, as well as beautifully serene art studios dotted around the seaside town. At RAW’s core is still fundamentally the open studio art trail, a bit like a ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’. This year, visitors got to see over 65 of Raglan’s top artists, experiencing first-hand how they go about their mahi and getting a sneak peek into varying creative processes and artistic spaces. The event has evolved through the years, adding more activities for both artists and visitors alike. ‘The Hatch’, an emerging artists incubator programme and exhibition, sponsored by Rangitahi and the Waikato District Creative Communities, has really focused on igniting the next wave of art talent. An ‘Artist Connect’ programme, enabled by Bayleys Real Estate in Raglan, is also a central part of RAW now with artists being able to connect with peers and clients through the bus tour and opening night cocktail party. RAW’s collaboration with the Raglan Country and Blues Music Festival has also been a brilliant addition, bringing lots of fun and a great vibe around town. Artists need to be thinking ahead already! Registration for the event will likely be in March next year so sign up to the RAW newsletter on the web site to be informed about when it opens. The RAW team is always on the lookout for committed RAW partners and works closely with its partners to ensure they receive the max exposure out of the event. PIECING TOGETHER A NEW LIFE IN RAGLAN with Mosaic Artist Archilles Botes - Words by Janine Jackson

fter years honing his craft, mosaic artist Achilles Botes is taking the leap into life as a full-time artist.

He has set up a workshop at the back of his Lorenzen Bay home, sharing the space with his partner Nicole’s Pilates studio.

The initial drawcard was the surf, but the couple were also seeking a slower pace of life, one that created more time for Achilles’ art.

“I’ve committed to giving it a solid six months. I am realistic about it, but at the same time I am very idealistic. I definitely want to give it a go,” he says. “I have never really had that opportunity. I worked eight hours a day and came home to mosaic for four hours every day, seven days a week, and then seven hours on the weekends. It was a big challenge.”

Achilles is also a talented musician and has played in several Wellington bands, including Ghostplane, an experimental indie rock and dark alt-country group active in the 2000s. A mandolin gifted to him by his recently passed brother Costa is calling him back to music. One of his last visits with Costa became a jam session, with Achilles playing their mother’s mandolin.

With his workshop set up and new creative pathways opening, Achilles says he is excited to become more involved in Raglan’s creative community. “There is so much talent here. It is inspiring to be part of it.”

Having taken up mosaics nearly twenty years ago as a hobby, Achilles’ artworks are beautifully made and precisely assembled.

“We were mucking around and he said this is a terrible instrument, because it wasn’t a very good mandolin. Three days later a studio-quality mandolin turned up. I need to get good on that thing to pay homage to Costa.”

“I started out doing the official bash method,” he laughs. “Now I do a lot of filing and shaping, and I can spend a long time working on something that other people might not even notice.” Attention to detail is Achilles’ strong point. Take, for example, the mosaic kea soon to be rehomed with its new owner – so intricately assembled it looks like it might take flight. Or the googly-eyed frog poised as if it’s about to leap straight from the background.

He is looking forward to immersing himself in the local music scene and has his eye on Raglan Old School Art Centre’s Live and Local gigs. “The music thing is going to happen one way or the other.”

After taking part in his first Raglan Arts Weekend in 2025, he is more motivated than ever to develop his work and push it in new directions.

Originally from Wellington, Achilles and Nicole finally made the move to Raglan three years after buying their home. Raglan had been on their radar for many years but family commitments kept them in Wellington.

“I have gotten into using stained glass a lot more for the colour you get from it. It is almost like a whole different discipline. But it has also got me interested in doing other glass work, like copper foil stained glass and potentially leadlighting.”

“I passed through Raglan on a hitchhiking trip back from Northland maybe twenty-eight years ago, and Nicole and I came back eight years ago and have been back pretty much each year since,” he says.

WITNESS ART IN MOTION at Dominique Marriott’s Pop-Up Gallery

he brushstrokes are swift, decisive, and charged. Within moments, a figure emerges on paper: fluid, essential, alive.

This is the unmistakable signature of artist Dominique Marriott, and after years of requests, she’s bringing her captivating live performance back to the public eye, beginning in Raglan. On December 27th at 3pm, Marriott will paint from a nude life model in the garden of her pop-up gallery on Wallis Street. This free event offers a rare chance to watch the creative arc unfold. Her last performance in 2019 was booked out, and a planned tour was later postponed by COVID and subsequent exhibitions and commissions. Now she returns, and Raglan receives the first invitation. “People keep asking when I’ll perform again,” Marriott says. “Raglan has given me so much as an artistic base. I wanted the first of the new performances to happen here.”

Despite more than a decade in the area, this pop-up gallery is a rare chance to view Marriott’s work locally and meet the artist. Set on Wallis Street, along the route to the wharf with various studios and creative stops on the way, the gallery showcases a curated selection of her distinctive ink paintings. TALKING ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH by Ruby Gibbs - creator of the Mental Health Toolbox

ia ora Whāingaroa and welcome to another end of year recap from the mental health column. Although this year saw a reduction in the column due to me pursuing my studies, it does not mean that I have stopped thinking about our collective wellbeing. My interviews this year explored the ways members of our community are showing up with their passion and their skills to provide the infrastructure we need to support each other here in Whāingaroa. Dave March spoke about the launch of Mental Health Pathfinder, stressing how important it is to see mental health in a holistic way. He also reflected on the spiritual element of wellbeing and our natural, human longing for connection. Teresa Morgan spoke about being involved in many local mental health initiatives including Tūmanako Whāingaroa, the suicide prevention group. Her kaupapa is about being there for people, asking the questions and checking in on the people in our community who may slip under the radar. I also spoke to members of Tūmanako Whāingaroa to gain some insight into what’s driving their mahi. They all came through with the same idea; something personal has driven them to contribute to the collective, to offer support, to bring people together. Across all these kōrero, the main theme that stands out to me, and what I’m thinking about as we head into summer, is connection. Real connection. What does that mean? And how can we nurture it? How can we show up for each other in real and meaningful ways and build relationships that help us from falling too deep into our own heads? Though I don’t have any concrete answers for myself or for all of you, I know I will be spending the summer building and nurturing these connections in my own life. I hope to see you out there. FOX CABINS Tiny Houses & Modular Homes

ox Cabins is now in its ninth year of building high quality tiny homes and consented transportable dwellings from its permanent base in Raglan. In that time, the company has delivered more than 100 unique buildings across Aotearoa, from Invercargill to Kaitaia. No two projects have ever been the same; every build is custom designed to suit each client’s needs and style.

Fox Cabins began in Raglan, but as the company grew it became difficult to secure a larger workshop locally. The team eventually relocated manufacturing to Hamilton.

Another highlight was the creation of the Everest tiny home on wheels. Originally designed by a British architect for one of Adam’s clients, the goal was to produce a clean, minimalist Airbnb style retreat. Its standout features, including a downstairs bedroom, a gable roof with exposed beams and Scandinavian inspired simplicity, quickly resonated with customers.

“Yeah, it was tough,” says owner Adam Fox. “Commuting was a huge time and financial cost, and we felt really distanced from our home, friends and family in Raglan.” A few years later, the opportunity arose to purchase land back in Raglan and build a purpose designed factory. Adam took the opportunity immediately. “Not only could we work close to home and be more present as parents and partners, but we could also reinvest in the Raglan community. It strengthened the long-term stability of the business, and looking back, that stability is what

Fox Cabins gained major momentum after being commissioned to create a custom cabin with a mezzanine. From that project came the Fox Den Mezzanine, which debuted at the 2018 Fieldays to great success. The compact and distinctive design helped drive further investment in design capability, company growth and strong supplier relationships.

“It needed to feel high end and beautiful while still meeting road legal size and weight requirements,” Adam says. “It was a real technical challenge, but we are incredibly proud of what we brought to the market.” Since the first Everest was delivered in 2019, it has become Fox Cabins’ recognisable flagship design. Today, the company offers several variations, from the original 8 metre model through to a spacious

14 metre version. Since 2025, the Everest has also been available as a Council consented dwelling on piles, allowing delivery and installation anywhere in New Zealand. A commitment to continual improvement in design, architecture, compliance and community benefit is a major point of difference for Fox Cabins. Alongside their popular tiny home range, the company has invested significantly in becoming specialists in small and medium sized transportable consented homes. They now have a growing portfolio of 50 to 85 square metre dwellings completed, in construction or in the immediate pipeline. From remote off grid builds to flying two completed units into Kawau Island by Black Hawk helicopter this year, we’re up for any challenge, Adam says. “We’ve built a depth of experience that really matters, especially when it comes to navigating Council requirements.” Fox Cabins is made up of Licensed Builders and experienced cabinetmakers, and the company is a Registered Master Builders Association member. As Director, Adam remains committed to best practice and ongoing professional development, continually looking for ways to refine systems, methods and designs.

Adam recently returned from visiting tiny home villages and builders in North Carolina and Colorado. He observed a strong shift in the United States toward ADUs, or Accessory Dwelling Units, permanent dwellings in the 40 to 60 square metre range. He expects New Zealand may see a similar movement following the legislative changes around “Granny Flats,” which now allow secondary dwellings up to 70 square metres without requiring Council involvement. This will reduce time and costs.

STRUGGLING WITH IRD TAX DEBT? with Gina Jansen Lawyers

any businesses, including companies, partnerships and sole traders, struggle with overdue taxes such as PAYE, GST, Kiwisaver payments and provisional tax. You are not alone. We have worked with many businesses trying to survive by juggling cash flow and feeling the pressure of a tight economy that’s out of their control.

In 2025, we witnessed a sharp rise in IRD-initiated legal proceedings in the Courts, and demands for full payment of overdue taxes, including statutory demands to liquidate a company, personal bankruptcy of sole traders, and criminal prosecutions of companies and individuals for failing to file tax returns and/or failing to deduct payments. It’s an understatement to say this is stressful on business owners. That’s where we come in. At Gina Jansen Lawyers, our specialty is tax disputes, litigation and negotiation. We help our tax debt clients work with IRD. We find practical solutions that ease the financial strain on owners while keeping the business trading. IRD isn’t just any old creditor. They are a tax agency with a very large toolbox of specific rules and laws that can demolish a business in a very short time. Despite the view that IRD staff are inhuman and robotic, our experience is that IRD staff are very open to well-reasoned and provable proposals that meet their internal policies. Using our in-depth knowledge of those policies, the tax legislation, and 20-plus years of negotiating with IRD, we have well-proven methods that achieve amazing results for our clients. We obtain background information from our clients to understand the entire situation and how it arose, and then build a compelling case to IRD that offers viable solutions and

affordable repayment plans based on IRD policies, business affordability and cash flow. More often than not, this results in a partial remission of taxes, penalties and interest, ultimately preventing liquidation and/or bankruptcy. Of course, every situation is different, but what’s critical is the importance of reaching out for help early. Don’t assume IRD silence means safety or that they have forgotten you — they have not. Once IRD act, they act fast. The Companies and Bankruptcy Acts impose very short deadlines on respondent parties to negotiate with the Commissioner once legal proceedings are afoot. So, we use many remedies available to us to negotiate results that even the Commissioner’s staff cannot effect without our input — i.e. getting significantly paid. We review all legal options to devise a tailored strategy based on your particular circumstances. Some taxes, like GST and PAYE, are only held on trust by a business, and IRD takes a hard line when businesses use these taxes to prop up cash flow. There can be criminal consequences for voluntarily liquidating a company that owes GST and/or PAYE, so it’s important directors get strategic advice. Our results don’t happen by chance, luck, or without being highly skilled at what we do. Our toolbox includes clear, direct and persuasive communication, persistence, sound legal reasoning, and extensive experience and confidence in what we do. One recent example is helping a sole trader in the childcare industry who, like so many businesses, was hit hard by Covid-19. Our client had not had any previous remissions and was able to raise a substantial loan from family. We negotiated with the Commissioner to have all returns filed up to date (often working closely with the client’s accountants)

and secured tax relief in the form of a partial write-off of a significant sum. Our team of tax-industry expert lawyers can provide you with clear and strategic advice. You’re very inspiring. I relished the learning. I’ve personally gained so much from you all and I love sharing this with other MPs and people I meet. While I have been driving an electric car for a couple of years, since moving to a rural setting about a year ago I have installed solar on my roof, so the sunshine goes straight into the car. I’ve started growing fruit and vegetables, have a compost system up and running, and I have my home waste minimisation practice going quite well. Funded by Parliamentary Service. As a representative, authenticity is very important, so being able to say “I know that works” is very powerful.

There is a lot of change to work on. I’ve taken on the feral cat project with Celia Wade-Brown from the Green Party and we are working on convincing other MPs about the microchipping of domestic cats. These issues should not be political, and we should as much as possible make issues to do with biodiversity parliamentary and non-partisan which will ensure they endure. As an organic farmer I am pushing soil carbon sequestration to mitigate some of the climate change issues we are facing. This is not well understood in NZ, but it will not only help to solve our climate issues but will create a water storage tool and provide extra drought resistance. I’m always happy to receive ideas from such a switched-on community with your community energy projects and your repair café. These are ideas which can infiltrate other communities too. meet the agents How did you get started in real estate, and why? I’d been in the Police for 19 years and knew I wanted a change, so I looked at careers with a similar skill set. Policing and sales are both essentially peoplefocused roles involving communication, problem-solving, negotiation, and building relationships. I’d also owned and sold a few houses privately, so it felt like a good match. I wanted a role where I could live and work in and around Raglan to enjoy the coastal lifestyle. Oh – and KFC will be served at my funeral.

I’ve seen some amazing homes and learnt a lot about some incredible people here, and as a result, I’ve made some lifelong friends. What’s a tip you might give to firsthome buyers? The road up to Wainui Reserve will be closed from 8pm-6am (the next morning) on Friday 16th Jan and Saturday 17th Jan 2026, unless you have the appropriate festival car pass. There is no general parking for festival attendees onsite as it is reserved for those with camping and appropriate car passes. For those who live locally or have alternative accommodation cars can be parked at the Raglan Airfield and shuttles are provided to and from the festival site. Please be aware there may be heavy traffic during peak times predicted between 8am - 1pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We apologise for any inconvenience.
