Cherkasy is located in the central part of Ukraine. It is the main city of Cherkasy region, its administrative, industrial and cultural centre with a population - about 295 thousand people. The city lies on the picturesque right bank of the Dnipro River, in the upper part of the Kremenchuk reservoir – the biggest of this water cascade. Being 724 years old the city has a rich history. Cherkasy was founded at the end of the XIII century as a forpost and quickly got the military settlement status. Since the XV century, it has become the distinct centre under the auspices of the Great Lithuanian Dukedom. There, on the banks of the Dnipro River, Ukrainian Cossack movement was born, the events of historical significance, namely, the struggle for independence, unfolded. Cherkasy castle, built in the middle of the XVI c e n t u r y, w a s f o s t e r e d b y H e t m a n O s t a f i y Dashkevych.
The streets and squares of Cherkasy remember its famous statesman – B o h d a n Khmelnytskyi. The modern architecture style of the city was formed in 1826, when Nicholas I approved of the Urban Plan made by William Geste. On January 7, 1954 Cherkasy region was formed and Cherkasy became a regional centre.

One of seven National Zoos of Ukraine is situated in Cherkasy. It was established in 1980 and now it is home for 108 animal species, six of them are registered in the Red Data Book of Ukraine and 7 of them – in International Red Data Book. Cherkasy is proud of the Cathedral sanctified in honor of Saint Michael the Archangel. It was built in the Byzantine style. The Cathedral became the biggest in Ukraine with its length of 58 m, width of 53 m and height of 72 m. In June, 2003 the Relics of St. Makariy were transfered to this belfry. On the banks of Dnipro in 1990s was built the only in Ukraine pagoda of “White Lotus”. It was the copy of famous temple in Laos with the sculptures of two ancient warriors near the entrance to the cell, which were brought from Tibet. On the day of autumnal equinox (September 22) on the territory of the temple was set up Stupa, which symbolizes the enlightened mind of Buddha. It also plays a protective role and is the sign of cosmic power's interception in this place. The original, decorative building of former hotel “Slovyanskyi” is situated at the corner of Khreshchatyk and Dashkevycha streets. It was erected in the modern style with the Gothic elements at the end of the XIX-th century on the money of entrepreneur Skoryna. There are suppositions that a well-known Kyivan architect took part in its erecting. In the central part of the city there are monuments to Taras Shevchenko and Bogdan Khmelnytsky, who were historical characters of Ukrainian and Cherkassy history. Modern trends to erect unusual monuments influenced Cherkasy as well. On the territory of meat-packing plant was erected the monument “Bychok-goduvalnyk” (bull-breadwinner), on the territory of Cherkasy Water Works – the monument to plumber, near hotel “Rosava” – the monument to Ukrainian Varenyk (dumpling).

Today Cherkasy is a real finding for every tourist. The city has favorable climate and recreation resources for citizens and city guests. Cherkasy is well-known due to its recreational areas with numerous parks, gardens and beaches. In 1967 Juvileiny Park was established on the territory of 30 hectares. The park is a monument of landscape type and has federal importance. On the territory of the park there are cascades of artificial lakes and waterfalls, oak wood, coniferous forest and ornamental trees. The other monuments of landscape type are Bogdan Khmelnytsky National University Dendropark, Central Playland, Park of Victory, Regional Hospital's Park, First City Hospital's Park, Bogdan Khmelnytsky Park and Chemists Park. There are a lot of parks in the city. Eight city fountains are equipped with illumination and music. Cherkasy has a unique coastline— about 16 km of beaches. Except the beaches, Cherkasy has pine-woods with a healthful air. Healthful climate, picturesque natural and park landscapes are important for organization of medical tourism. In historical part of the city there is Cherkasy local history museum. The institution is one of the biggest local history museums of Ukraine. Every year about 150 thousands of people visit the museum. The exposition of the museum is situated in 30 rooms on the area of 2800 square metres. It has the following divisions: nature of the region, archaeology, ethnography, history of the region of the XIVth—beginning of the XX-th century, history of the region since 1917 and modern times, number of separate rooms devoted to people who come from Cherkasy and its regions or to well-known people whose activities are related to “The land of Shevchenko” (poet Vasyl Symonenko, botanist and selectionist Volodymyr Symyrenko, politician Vyacheslav Chornovil). Among unique exhibits the collection of Cossack time's things takes the honorable place. Rarities of the museum are the collection of black-letter books, icons, ethnographical and archaeological collections.

"Dnipro", “Ukraine”, “Orange” and "Rossava" and other hotels are always ready to welcome guests and to offer them a great variety of different services to make their stay in Cherkasy comfortable. On visiting Cherkasy and on conducting scientific conference or a seminar the guests have a possibility to rest and to spend a good time. For example, they can go fishing or hunting in the local forests, drive a motor boat on the river, have rest on the Dnipro islands. The city is a part of the first state historical and touristic program “Zolota Pidkova Cherkashchyny” (The Golden Horseshoe of Cherkasy Region). Cherkasy industry plays the key role in the economical welfare of the whole region. The key positions in the economic development are taken by chemical, machine-building, device building, and food processing industries. The main trunkrailways and highways of the city and Cherkasy region have an outlet in Kiev, Moscow, Saint Petersburg, ports of the Black sea, the industrial centers of Ukraine and foreign countries. Cherkasy airport gives an opportunity to welcome international trips. Cherkasy airport is situated in the geographical centre of Europe and of Ukraine, on the crossroads of transcontinental airlines West-East, North-South, which connect the Scandinavian countries and the Baltic States with the Near East, and the countries of Western Europe with the countries of Middle Asia and the Far East, and also connect Russia with Western Europe.
River transport provides transportation of loads to the regions that are located along the Dniper River and to the ports of the Black Sea. Industrial complex is presented by 103 basic enterprises in 11 sectors of industry. Recent years can be characterized by a gradual growth in the production of build materials and machine building, chemical, food and pulp and paper industry. People all over Ukraine enjoy tasty products of LLC “Svit Lasoshchiv”, PC “Cherkasykhlib”, LLC ”Cherkaska prodovolcha compania” enterprise, and many others. PC “Azot” plays the key role in the region chemical industry. Cherkasy automobile industry is represented by Affiliate “Car assembly plant ¹ 2” of Bogdan Motors Automobile Corporation which produces under licence cars LADA, Hyundai Tucson, Elantra XD and Accent. Recently the production of a new car Bogdan 2310 of its own design has been begun on the basis of LADA 2110. PC “Cherkaskyi Avtobus” (“Bus of Cherkasy”) specializes in the production of buses “Bogdan” of small class for passenger transportation and buses of specialpurpose. The enterprise has closed-loop production cycle and its own scientific-technical base.
Three models of trucks ISUZU are produced in Affiliate “Car assembly plant ¹ 3” of Bogdan Motors Automobile Corporation. The regional centre has a considerable part of joinedstock enterprises. During 2006-2009 the total amount of foreign investments in Cherkasy economy reached 159.9 million USD with 65.9% directed into chemical industry, 36.9%--into food processing industry and 16.9%--into pulp and paper industry. The foreign economic trade is carried out with the partners from 86 world countries. In 2009 the general volume of export made 368.7 million USD, import –196.1 million USD. The greater part of export goes to Russian Federation, Turkey, India, China and Poland. Import is from the Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, Turkey, Japan, Germany and Sweden.

Why is it worth to invest in Cherkasy? Cherkasy is situated on a crossway of main transport highways: water, motor-car and railway. The distance from Kyiv to Cherkasy: on highway—185 km, on Dnieper River—160 km. Proximity to the capital turns Cherkasy into potentially attractive city for doing business and development of tourism as well. The regional centre has a railway station, a river (cargo and passenger) port, bus stations, and the airport. The presence of transport infrastructure allows to talk about the creation of a powerful logistic center. The foundation for this has been already laid. The airport of Cherkasy got the international status and it can receive domestic as well as international flights. Cherkasy is situated in 30 km from T. Chevtchenko railway station, that is one of the biggest rail centers of Ukraine.
Prospects of tourism’s development Cherkasy is located on the right bank of Kremenchug water reservoir which is also called Cherkasy Sea. Untouched beaches, green areas (pinewoods, parks), beneficial primordial nature give an impulse to the tourism development: medical, healthimproving and excursion. Health-improving tourism. Cherkasy has a unique coastline—about 16 km of beaches. In the times of the USSR the city was famous of great number of tourists from Russia, Kazakhstan and Byelorussia. Except the beaches, Cherkasy has pine-woods with a healthful air. Healthful climate, picturesque natural and park landscapes are important for organization of medical tourism. In Cherkasy the cost of medical services is considerably cheaper than, say, in Kyiv or Dnipropetrovsk. Excursion tourism. The representatives of different religions peacefully live in Cherkasy: Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Jews and others. The biggest temple of Buddhism in Ukraine has been built in the city on the slopes of the Dnipro River. Except the excursion on the temple, the representatives of buddhistic community «White lotus» will show the tourists the filigree technique of the kung fu school Sha-fut-fan (the school of five battle cats).

The capital of hetman B. Khmelnytsky—Chygyryn is situated in 60 km from Cherkasy. There are reconstructed ancient churches, castles, residences of Cossack time. The visitors of the city will have the opportunity to visit the prominent creation of the end of the XVIII-th—beginning of the XIX-th century—the unique, landscape park “Sofiivka”, which is famous in Ukraine and beyond its borders. This park is situated in ancient Ukrainian city Uman, not far from Cherkasy. The area of the park is about 170 hectares. The foundation of the park was laid in 1796 by the owner of the city Uman—Polish magnate Stanislav Felix Potozkyi. It was laid as a present for his beautiful Greek wife Sofia. The unique museum of gigantic settlements of Trypilska culture is situated in the village of Legedzyne, on the highway Cherkasy-Uman. Trypilska culture existed in 3-4th millennium BC. It is one of the most brilliant cultural phenomena in the history of primitive society of Europe. By level of socioeconomic development, tripilzi approached the civilization level of Egypt and Middle East. Archaeological researches have been conducted in the settlement “Taliyanky” (450 hectares) since 1994. This settlement is one of the biggest settlements of the early agriculture period in the world. It existed in 30-29 centuries BC and there were 3000 buildings.
The guests of Cherkasy should visit Kamyanka as this small town is really worth seeing. At the end of 18-th century this picturesque town became one of the cultural centers of the south of the Russian empire and the centre of Decembrists' movement. This picturesque nook of Ukraine inspired eminent poet Pushkin. He wrote a few poetries there, which refer to the masterpieces of universal lyric poetry. P.I. Chaikovskyi—one of the most popular composers in the world, came almost every year to Kamyanka during 1855-1878. The music of opera “Evgeniy Onyegin”and many other works were performed by him there for the first time. The ancient park Davydovyh has been well preserved to this day. It is called Decembrists' park now. The grotto is the most ancient historic landmark. It was built at the end of XVIII-th century. The grotto is a favourite recreation centre of Kamyanka's guests, as well as it was of Pushkin, Chaikovskyi, Decembrists. The decorations of Decembrists' park are Green House and Watermill, which are historic landmarks of the beginning of the XIX-th century. In Pushkin and Chaikovskyi museum there is a very interesting exposition—the heritage that has international importance.

Cherkasy region is also known as the motherland of the outstanding Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko. He was born in the village of Moryntsi in the district of Zvenygorodka, and was buried in the Monastic Mountain in the city of Kanev. Every summer international festival of a stone sculpture «Living stone» is organized in Cherkasy during which various sculptures appear from a strong stone in front of the numerous visitors. Together with the stone festival the evenings of songs are conducted in Cherkasy which include performances of Ukrainian and foreign stars. In winter we have the tradition to invite guests and citizens on the festival of ice figure «Kryzhtal». This winter it will be organized for the fourth time. Business tourism. On visiting Cherkasy and on conducting scientific conference or a seminar the guests have a possibility to rest and to spend a good time. For example, they can go fishing or hunting in the local forests, drive a motor boat on the river, have rest on the Dnipro islands.
Cherkasy local authorities worked out a Concept of participating in the final part of the Euro-2012. A calculation is simple: Cherkasy city which is located on a crossing of basic traffic streams can host and lodge a plenty number of fans. The experience of championships proves that usually the majority of fans do not live in the cities where matches pass. It is much cheaper. In fact during Euro-2012 the hotel in the capital will cost about 200-300 euro a day, and the majority of fans who are people of middle prosperity can not afford it. Lodging of the fans in Cherkasy hotels and campsites will take off loading and tension in the cities where the matches will be conducted and also it will relieve traffic ways. The present hotel infrastructure of Cherkasy meets demands of Euro-2012 not in full measure. For today there are 17 hotels in Cherkasy which are able to give 570 rooms.

The river passenger station was built in 60th of the last century. Port territory is 3 sq. km. The water area for the moorage of ships is surrounded with the breakwater concrete dike, 1728 m. in length. Depth of the waterway is 5-8 metes. River port is located within 663 km from the mouth of the Dnipro River and in 160 km from Kyiv.

Communal enterprise «Cherkasy Airport» is located in 6 km from the center of Cherkasy, it occupies the area of 174, 5 hectares. The air field has a runway with artificial coverage measuring 2500õ42 m and a spare ground zone measuring 2500õ75 m. The airport is admitted to exploitation of the airships of the indexes A, B, Ñ, D and the helicopters of all types. Its carrying capacity at 98 ton is without limitations, at 171 ton – 20 operations in twenty-four hours. Carrying capacity of passenger terminal is 400 persons an hour. In 2008 the airport accepted 60 airplanes. They are mainly charter flights within the borders of Ukraine. The airport got international status and can accept not only internal but also international trips.
