Creative Component / Thesis Given the implication of food waste’s effect on the climate and contribution to the climate crisis, this research study explores methods for food waste management through a holistic approach, to answer the question, “How can people use a planning framework to inform the food waste problem?” Using current literature on food waste management and a case study of Ames, IA, this research develops a method of food waste reduction, food waste rescue, and food waste diversion through the combined efforts of education and outreach, public policy, and public/private partnerships. Through this analysis, the research gives way to a need for a flexible and community-based planning guide for food waste management. The guide is based on self-assessment, community participation and surveys, a food waste management flow chart, and a food waste management checklist.
