Whole Objects Post Office in Columbus, Ohio Instructor Aaron Powers Fall 2020

The goal of this project was to create a post office which successfully ties the residential and commercial areas on either side of the site together. This post office is an exploration of the relationship of platonic solids defining the exterior form as well as interior spaces. It acts as a transition between a highly commerical area and residential area through its tall and leaning prism angled toward the commercial side and its low rectangular prism sitting on the residential side. It has a public axis running through its retail and PO Box spaces that acts as a connection between the streets just above and below the site. The building is largely defined by the idea of PO Boxes and how they act as containers of program. The rooms carved out of the walls act as much larger PO Boxes to house offices, restrooms and retail space.

Low-Resolution Research Fire Station Number 4 by Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown Instructor Aaron Powers Research completed with Brandon Klailee & Hayden Kobelak Drawings completed independently Fall 2020

This project explored low-resolution buildings as a way to develop modeling skills. We explored the influences past projects by Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown had on this project. It gave us insight into how we could develop our own precedents for projects we design in the future.

The orthographic projections and diagrams aided our exploration and understanding of the project while also developing our skills in producing those deliverables. I was most influenced by their intentions to design the facade as a kind of bilboard and employed that knowledge in my representations of the building by addressing its presence in the section, elevation and axonometric drawings.

Flat Out Display Pavilion Instructor Ashley Bigham Spring 2021

The goal of this project was to design a pavilion which would sit on the Vitra Campus and house a single chair from the Vitra Collection. It developed from flattening a container and refolding and reconfiguring the flattened surface into a three-dimensional pavilion. The flattened box was also projected onto the surface of the pavilion to create a pattern which could inform aperatures. I utilized a Target box covered in packing tape which I translated into the stripes which appear on the pavilion’s surface. Because the tape was both transparent and acting as a binding agent, the stripes do the same for the pavilion. There are stripes cut out to allow light into the pavilion as well as to interlock pieces of the pavilion to create a unified form.
