Dear Parishioners, Once again, we take a moment to stop and look at this amazing community and the wonderful blessing that God has given us. Our community has so much to be thankful for, and so much we can be proud of. Having completed another fiscal year, this report allows us a chance to look back on the many ways we have been able to accomplish the mission that Christ laid before us.

Here you will find the report of our finances. Our fiscal year runs from July 1st to June 30th of the following year. You will see here a report of what was donated, and what we spent that money on. But the finances are really only a part of the story of what makes St. Benedict this extraordinary community.

We believe that we were called by Christ to a mission. We have come together in community to grow in our relationship with Christ, to celebrate together the joy of walking with the Lord in life, and to bring the gift of the Gospel to our world. We want to invite people to be a part of our community and be a part of Christ. This blessing of belonging to the Body of Christ is always with us and provides the strength of our life. But we need to live this gift in all we do. This past year showed us just how difficult that can sometimes be.

Facing the global pandemic presented many challenges. However, life always has its challenges. It is up to us to decide how we want to face those issues and respond. We always have the choice of determining who we will be and how we want to live our faith.

This report also gives us a chance to talk a bit about how we have responded to the pandemic and all our challenges. Our ministries have done a phenomenal job of moving things forward.

I think that a lesson we’ve all been able to glean from the pandemic is that change is inevitable. Try as we may to predict our needs in the future, the Holy Spirit often has other plans. Still, we must try our best to adapt to our ever-changing world. To this end, we’ve completed two major projects in church over the past twelve months. The first is the installation of a new video broadcast system. The second is the renovation of our choir loft.

A New Livestream Ministry In April 2021 we completed the installation of a new broadcast system in our church. This system includes four high-definition “PTZ” (pan, tilt, zoom) and a control room in the sacristy. Each part of the installation is purpose-built, which makes this system infinitely more reliable than the previous one (a collection of iPads). The most challenging part of the installation was obtaining the equipment. As the world faced supply chain issues, parts that would normally arrive within a few weeks took months to obtain.

Despite the delays, the new system came online at the end of April, and we have been using it ever since.

By livestreaming our daily Masses, we’ve been able to help those at home stay connected with the parish.

We’ve also been able to reach folks that would not normally attend Mass at St. Ben’s. We still receive letters, emails, and calls thanking us for continuing this ministry. Though viewership has decreased slightly as we have returned to in-person Masses, there is still a group of about 75 to 100 people that watch Mass everyday between YouTube and Facebook.

This new ministry has allowed some of our parishioners to share their gifts with the community in a new way. The camera system is operated by a dedicated group of volunteers. Most of these volunteers are young people, middle-schoolers in fact. It has been amazing to see the talent and joy that each of them brings to this ministry. We’ve watched them grow and learn over the past year, and I must say it is quite impressive to watch our students run the broadcasts in our little “sacristy studio”. I think this is yet another example of the Holy Spirit working through change to create something wonderful and new.

Choir Loft Renovation We are currently completing the renovation of our choir loft. This project has been in the works for several years, though the pandemic certainly acted as a catalyst to get it done. Several have asked: “Why we would move the choir and organ upstairs?” and “What will happen to the downstairs music area?”

To answer the first question, one must go all the way back to 1992 when our current organ was installed.

At that time the decision was made to put the organ console and choir downstairs while keeping most of the speakers upstairs. The main speaker array was installed in the choir loft and includes the sub-woofers

and a complete set of speakers which try to reproduce the sounds of a pipe organ. A second smaller “antiphonal” array was installed above the downstairs choir area. The choice to put the main speakers upstairs with the choir downstairs presented a host of problems. Because of the distance between the singers and main speakers, and the fact that our church has about 8 seconds of reverb, there was a constant delay between the organ and the singers. Trying to keep the choir or cantor together with sound that is coming from nearly a half block away proved incredibly challenging. Parishioners would complain about the cantors “dragging” when in fact the singers were doing what they are trained to do and responding to what they can hear. In short, the organ installation was both impractical and flawed from the outset. By moving the console and singers upstairs all the sound is coming from the same place, allowing the musicians to stay together and lead effectively.

In addition, by singing from the loft our choirs now use the church’s acoustics to their benefit. Since they are singing unobstructed across the main axis of the sanctuary, the sound just rolls and fills the space. Put simply, we are once again using the church in the way it was designed, rather than trying to sing partially obstructed by a wall.

We do continue to use the music area downstairs. For smaller celebrations accompanied on the piano and for our children’s choirs and contemporary ensembles, this area still serves our needs well. It can also now serve a flexible seating for larger celebrations, such as Christmas and Easter. This added flexibility will allow us to continue to make music in a variety of ways for years to come.

Looking Ahead As we look to the future, it is impossible to predict what ministry will look like in ten years, five years, or even six months from now. However, we continue to do our best to adapt and be flexible in our ever-changing world. St. Ben’s continues to be a leader in these uncertain times, and this is a testament to the people that make up this great community.

The Young Church is Determined and Creative KIM MCMILLAN, DIRECTOR OF YOUTH MINISTRY

As the school year of 2020 started and in-person learning was happening, many of the opportunities for Youth Ministry at our parish were in a holding pattern.

There was a need to limit exposure of young people to each other because of the fear of interrupting the delicate balance of cohorts. At the parish we were able to continue offering meetings via Zoom but, as schools and high schools re-engaged Zoom events became less appealing to young people.

Throughout all of the restriction though, there was a group of young people who decided they wanted to shed light on the tensions being revealed in regard to the inequality and bias in our world. This group continued to meet via Zoom and used our social media platform on Instagram to educate and inform all our followers on many topics. Some of their posts educated about how to combat racism, support those experiencing mental health struggles, raise awareness about body positivity and self-acceptance, how to contribute to preserving the environment and how we, as Christians, can support our brothers and sisters in the LGBTQ+ community. This group of young people took on a topic and then “took over” our Instagram account. Each day they focused on different aspects of education including individuals in history, books providing insight and links to other websites. I was consistently impressed with their desire and effectiveness to reach out to others. For months these young people continued to support and educate through a platform that reaches others outside of our direct contact. The young church is a determined and creative church.

At the end of the academic school year, with some space to take a deep breath, we were able to plan for summer events in youth ministry.

During the month of July, we offered a service week for our high school age parishioners. We spent a week serving and working at the Mission of Our Lady of Angels.

One of the values of our Service Week’s focus being local is, that it reveals the inequity in the communities within our city. The West Humboldt Park area on Chicago’s west side is one of the poorest neighborhoods in the city of Chicago. The Mission serves the community and provides a shelter for the people who live there. Our conversations about the needs we witnessed, in a community only 4.4 miles away from our neighborhood, were impactful. The Franciscans of the Eucharist, the order that runs the Mission, were models to us, showing us how we can encounter others with dignity and compassion.

Serving at Our Lady of Angels shed light on the need for us as followers of Christ, to bring justice to an unjust situation. Even though we were still wearing masks to serve, it was so very good to be able to provide outreach and support to others who were in need. The young church is determined to defend justice.

We were also able to offer an in-person experience of Vacation Bible School this summer for our parish children! In 2020 we were unable to host VBS so the return of this week of faithful fun was welcomed enthusiastically. “You are Treasured” was the phrase most commonly heard resonating through Kittler Hall and in the surrounding hallways of our school. Our parish 7th and 8th graders and several of our high school volunteers were excited to be able to help teach the children of our parish about how much God loves them by leading small groups in discussions, songs and craft projects that reminded everyone of God’s Love for His children.

The dedicated youth ministry volunteers met daily in the week preceding our VBS week. They decorated the space and prepared themselves for this important role. Then the week of VBS they helped their group of children listen, learn, sing and grow in an understanding of God’s merciful love. Watching their faith in action is uniquely inspirational. The young church shares their faith joyfully and serves willingly.

This past August, a survey was sent out inviting parents of 7th, 8th and high school aged young people to share their thoughts about how youth ministry could continue to meet the needs of St Benedict’s young parishioners. Insights of the survey will help direct the focus of Youth Ministry in 2021/2022.

What’s happening next?

Happily, we have re-started meeting outside, twice a month, this past September. All 8th graders through high school aged teens, are invited to S’mores Nights. We look forward to offering these get together to help engage our St. Benedict Youth Ministry community in the life of the parish.

We have already offered a trip to Feed My Starving Children this year and we look forward to getting more opportunities to serve on the calendar.

This year, we will also be hosting some specific events for 7th graders.

Be on the lookout for two events hosted for parents of young people.

Our survey revealed the desire for speakers who can support parents as they journey with their young people.

St. Benedict Youth Ministry exists to support the young church and their families as we grow in faith and love of God. The young people are not our future.

They are our present and we are blessed by their faith, determination, creativity, desire to defend justice, joyfulness and compassion.

St. Benedict Preparatory School is Blessed with a Year of In-Person School During Pandemic RACHEL GEMO, HEAD OF PARISH SCHOOL

The 2020-21 school year at St. Benedict Preparatory School was full of many challenges in order to fulfill our goal of providing quality, Catholic in-person education during the COVID-19 pandemic.

While there were many challenges, there were also many blessings. Truly the Lord has done great things for us! The Holy Spirit surely was working through the faculty, staff and families; His protection was certainly upon us. SBPS was able to provide in-person learning from opening day in August through Thanksgiving vacation. Then, the school campus pivoted to remote learning through December and two weeks following Christmas break as the US experienced tragically high numbers of positive cases and deaths. SBPS preschool rooms remained in–person through December, as well as hosting a supervised and safe learning classroom for children of essential workers. Then, from mid-January through the end of the school year in June, SBPS provided in-person learning for all grade levels. Ninety-five percent of the student body chose in-person learning for most of the school year. The five percent of the students in grades 2-8 who chose remote learning were able to access live-streamed classes for the year as needed.

The success of SBPS during the pandemic is truly a testament to the parish and school community.

Across the country, school districts were not only battling COVID-19, but also the conflicts created by divided communities. Fortunately, through faith and grace, SBPS families found a way to unite for a common cause, look out for each other, and respect the mitigation strategies put forth by the Archdiocese of Chicago and SBPS. School leadership prioritized the safety of all, then the mental and spiritual wellness of all, and then finally the academic and extracurricular programming. Our teachers and staff persevered despite the anxious and uncertain times. Our students grew in resilience as they adapted their daily routines and learning practices. Through it all, we managed to keep our faith and sense of humor.

We are proud of our staff and students, and humbly grateful for the Lord’s blessings.

The Pandemic Does Not Stop Prayer The prayer life of our students is an integral part of faith formation and our Catholic identity.

Students at all grade levels K-8 take turns leading the student body through various forms of prayer.

Typically, our students lead prayer services in church with the students present. This year, our students either videoed or livestreamed prayer. The rest of the student body remained in their cohorts, properly socially distanced from each other. SBPS found a way to keep our prayer traditions going despite the need for safety. Additionally, our students practiced new technical skills, problem solving and creativity.

This is just one way our students developed adaptability and resilience, as well as their Catholic faith.

VIRTUAL MASS: Each Tuesday morning, our student body joined the parish virtual Mass. Two to three cohorts joined in church while the rest of the student body participated virtually in their classrooms. Father Steve used these virtual Masses as a key strategy to maintain a unified school spirit throughout the pandemic.

VIRTUAL HOLY ROSARY: Fifth graders live-streamed the annual Holy Rosary Prayer service. The student body prayed along with them in their cohort classrooms.

Classroom Set Up Designed To Protect Against COVID-19 During the 2020-21 school year, each student was assigned to a cohort of no more than 20 students.

This cohort would be their group for the year and the students mainly had all classes and activities in their assigned classroom. Desks were organized in rows and separated by three feet. In middle school, plexiglass dividers were used to help protect the students. Students would wear masks all day, whether in doors or outside, and wash their hands regularly.

The School Arts Program Finds a Way Forward Through the Pandemic There are many annual performing and fine arts programs that needed to be rethought given the challenges of the pandemic.

SBPS faculty knew that the “SHOW MUST GO ON” and found virtual ways for our student musicians, artists and singers to showcase their talents. Our Christmas concerts were all prerecorded and then shared with our school families. The middle school performed a virtual version of “A Christmas Carol.”

While we did not have Band in 2020, we were able to offer strings education. Our strings students performed in the Christmas concerts as well as held a virtual spring concert. In May, the SBPS art students all had work showcased in the virtual Art Fair organized by Jackie Stancin. While in person is the preferred showcase method, our staff and students were not discouraged.

The C of Creativity was alive and well during the pandemic.

Lunch on Leavitt Kept COVID Away One of the most dangerous times during the COVID-19 pandemic was lunchtime. Lunch is when everyone has their mask off and the possibility of contagious aerosols are high.

The safest place to eat under these circumstances is outdoors.

Even though the block lacks outdoor space, the faculty and students found a way to make outdoor lunch happen; thus “Lunch on Leavitt” was born. Students organized by cohort, sat outside distanced 6 feet away from each other, eating on the sidewalk. What at first felt awkward and alien, eventually became the preferred lunch option, often feeling like a picnic as the students enjoyed the fresh air and warm sun. Lunch on Leavitt and Byron continued through the end of the school year.

Student Connect with Remote Learners For students whose parents chose remote learning, the additional challenge was helping them feel connected to the school community. Our teachers found creative ways to connect our remote learners with in-person students.

Through partner and group work, using Microsoft Office TEAMS and laptops, our remote learners were provided opportunities to engage with their classmates.

Vaccination Day Comes to Faculty at St. Benedict Parish and School St. Benedict Parish and School have well over 110 employees, many of whom were at regular risk for COVID-19 because the school was providing in-person learning.

We were fortunate to have options to help get all our faculty and staff vaccinated who desired to be vaccinated. By the end of January 2021, the majority of our faculty and staff received their first dose of the vaccine. We want to give a special shout out to Dr. Nava Segall, Michigan Avenue Immediate Care and Walgreens.

Get Ready for iReady IN 2021, THE ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO ADAPTED A SYSTEM-WIDE USE OF IREADY FOR STANDARDS-BASED ASSESSMENT TO MEASURE STUDENT GROWTH AGAINST THE COMMON CORE STANDARDS IN READING AND MATH, WHILE PROVIDING TEACHERS REAL-TIME DATA TO INFORM INSTRUCTION. i-Ready is an online program that will help us determine a student’s strengths and areas for growth, personalize their learning, and monitor their progress throughout the school year. i-Ready allows SBPS faculty to meet an individual child where they are and provides them with data to inform instruction.

The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions to suit a child’s needs. Each item a student receives is based on their answer to the previous question. For example, a series of correct answers will result in slightly harder questions, while a series of incorrect answers will yield slightly easier ones. The purpose of this is not to give a child a score or grade but to determine how to best support their learning.

It was an unprecedented year because of COVID and much of the nation struggled to engage students in academic studies. The Archdiocese informed schools of the change from ASPIRE to iReady in the early spring, and SBPS faculty and students made a quick pivot to implement the iReady assessment for K-8 (only grade K-2 had seen iReady prior to spring 2021). Even though SBPS students and staff faced challenges, the students consistently did better in Reading and Math across the grade levels as compared to the national average from last year’s spring performance. Our students performed better in reading and math compared to other Chicago Catholic schools at most grade levels. Given the unexpected change in assessment, we are pleased with our students’ performance. Given the challenges of the pandemic, our students proved to be resilient and continued to grow academically.

10 Years of Building Inclusion It is part of the Catholic school mission to welcome diverse learners as we work together to create inclusive environments.

We have been serving diverse learners for decades, but about 10 years ago, we began to integrate the philosophy intentionally into our school culture and mission. Ten years ago, we began a 4-year partnership with the Chris L. and M. Susan Gust Foundation which provided professional development and educational support to strengthen our inclusion efforts. We carefully articulated a mission statement and vision for Inclusion Education at SBPS. Over the past ten years, we have grown the Inclusion Team to three Inclusion Facilitators with a Director of Inclusion, as well as added a full-time school counselor and added additional third-party IDEA staff. Further, we have grown our Response to Intervention Teams (RTI), which now have 21 teachers serving on two RTI committees, one for lower school and one for upper school.

INCLUSION EDUCATION at SBPS: St. Benedict Preparatory School is a transformed school community based on social justice principles. We believe that all students benefit from an inclusive and diverse learning community where all students: • are able to learn and develop their God-given gifts and talents • are able to develop and grow in Faith • are welcomed as valued members of all general education classes and extra-curricular activities in our parish and school • can participate and learn alongside their peers in general education instruction based on the general education curriculum and experience reciprocal social relationships (adapted from TASH, Revised June 2018 by SBPS Inclusion Team)

The Abby and Maya Roock Memorial Gardens Blessing and Dedication Saturday, July 31, 2021 On Saturday, July 31, 2021 Father Steve blessed the Abby and Maya Roock Memorial Gardens, commemorating the five-year anniversary of their deaths, as family, friends, staff and parishioners gathered in solidarity and prayer. These outdoor spaces were the result of months of reflection and planning as we desired to transform the spaces on our campus to provide children a place to learn and play, while remembering the lives of Abby and Maya Roock.

There are aspects of these gardens which are influenced by the lives of Abby and Maya. The Bell Street Memorial Garden sits right outside one of Abby’s classrooms when she was a student in Ms. Elliott’s preschool class. Her sister, Maddy, helped with the garden’s design incorporating the girls’ favorite colors purple and pink. The bench provides a place for all who seek rest or a quiet place to pray. The Willow Tunnel houses Abby’s and Maya’s name and fingerprint, reminding us how their lives have touched us all in a special way. The words etched into the rocks are from the Prayer of St. Benedict and inspire our path of faith, even through challenging and painful times.

The Dr. Seuss play garden was inspired by the classic children’s book, “Oh the Places You will Go,” a book that was read in Abby’s classroom and shared with love together in the Roock household.

While all parents have high hopes for their children in life, mostly, we want all our children to experience joy, peace, love and faith on their journey, ultimately reaching heaven. These words are featured on the directional signpost in the play space. They are a reminder of what is truly important in life.

The outdoor classroom garden at the corner of Irving Park Road and Bell provides our students with a place to learn about the wonders of nature, create in joy and collaborate in friendship.

The strawberry tower bears one of Abby’s favorite fruits.

The birdhouse welcomes our feathered friends, reminding us of Maya who, with a child’s wonder, pointed to birds as they flew across the sky.

Summer Garden Club Explores the Wonder of Nature

Over the summer, a group of middle school students met every Wednesday morning to care for the new Garden Classroom. In the spring, middle school students researched plants that would encourage pollinators and then planted a set of raised beds with those plants. Elementary students chose to plant an edible garden with a variety of herbs and vegetables.

Since school is not in session through the summer, we needed to have volunteer students watch over the gardens. Weekly, students would water, weed and fertilize the new plants. They’d prune plants and pick it’s fruit. They also had fun adding new plants, spreading mulch and cleaning up seasonal growth.

There were many hot, sweaty days, but the students persevered and learned about nature and gardening.

The Annual Baby and Kids Green Garage Sale Demonstrates the Generosity of S BP S For more than 10 years, our Baby and Kids Green Garage Sale has been generating funds for classroom and school enhancements, as well as providing a source of reasonably priced baby and kids items in a safe, organized environment. Additionally, there are always plenty of quality goods left after each sale which are donated to charities who are happy to accept the items. While this event seems to be on the surface, just another fundraiser, it is so much more. It is an act of environmental care as well as service to the school and families in need. It is truly a win, win, win event.

This event was first conceptualized and led by the Home and School Association. However, over the years, the Garage Sale grew so much that the fundraiser really needed a whole separate committee. The current committee led by Jen Patras (10 years), Liz Roarty (10 years), Jeanette Aylward (8 years), Kathleen Buchar (5 years), Ted Krueser (7 years), courageously accepted the challenge to continue leading the event. The garage sale has consistently made tens of thousands of dollars each year. The funds have typically funded teacher classroom grants. Each fall, after the event, teachers are able to submit an application to the committee with a project description and a request for funds. Over the past years, we’ve had new school supplemental programs, curriculum digital subscriptions, furniture, field trips and more funded. The impact on students is positive and direct!

The Baby and Kids Garage Sale was put on hold last fall, but we kept the faith. This year, we were able to hold a safe, in-person event. We have proven that even during a pandemic, we can come together and do great things! The Garage Sale had another record-breaking year, raising approximately $32,000 for the Classroom Grant Program, one of our highest sales to date.

This event is also a testament to the SBPS community. This year alone, we had over 150 volunteers who spent 1,000 hours accepting donations, sorting items, setting up the gym and working the day of the sale. Imagine multiplying that by 10+ years! It’s an investment of time, talent and treasure that is truly humbling.

This year we would like to give a sincere word of gratitude to the Garage Sale Committee: Jen Patras, Liz Roarty, Jeanette Aylward, Kathleen Buchar, Ted Krueser who will be rolling off after so many years of dedicated service. We are truly grateful for their efforts.

St. Kateri Center Update JODY ROY, DIRECTOR OF KATERI CENTER

We continue to adapt to new ways of providing services and programming for our community since the pandemic started. Despite the challenges, we have found creative ways to continue our services and presence while still following safe Covid practices. We have been included in the 10:00 am Mass on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month. With St. Ben’s new streaming technology, we can provide a live feed of Mass Services for our community on our Facebook page and website. Begun in early March 2020, daily Gospel reflections continue to be shared by Deacon Bill Frere.

We hosted a two-day Back to School to Drive Thru Pickup event at the end of August of 2020 in partnership with the CPS-American Indian Education Program, providing 78 students with back-to-school supplies. In October of 2020, in partnership with six other Native American Organizations, we hosted a Trunk or Treat event for over 250 members of the community. With these two socially safe events, we were able to spread the word about St. Kateri Center and its programming with the hope of attracting new participants.

St. Kateri Prayer Circle took place virtually, twice a month via Zoom. With a total of 25 participants throughout the year, it is a time to offer individual prayers to St. Kateri followed by Scripture reflection. Our Indigenous Women’s Healing Circle met virtually on the third Monday of the month, September through June. We held a star quilt ornament-making workshop with a record number of 50 participants. Led by a Native American facilitator, we held 2 healing-through-the-arts workshops where participants created an art piece using acrylic paint, with a total of 72 participants this past year.

We provided over 40 children with a Christmas gift and distributed gingerbread house kits to 15 families over the holidays. For Christmas, we partnered with other Native American groups in making gift baskets for 55 elders and seniors. In partnership with American Indian Center, we distributed 73 food baskets to community members and 153 Easter baskets to children this past Easter.

On May 1, 2021 in partnership with other Native American groups, we held a Missing Murdered Indigenous Women’s Awareness Event at River Trail Nature Center in Northbrook. We had a wonderful journalist who created a video that recorded this event, with approximately 500 in attendance. Later that month, in partnership with the Chicago American Indian Community Collaborative’s (CAICC) Education Committee, we hosted our Fifth Annual Urban Native Education Conference “Living Our Values Towards Health & Healing”. Over the course of two days, 6 concurrent sessions were held with 75 people in attendance.

Keynote speaker Cheyenne Kippenberger (Seminole) spoke about her life journey that led her to becoming Miss Indian World, her advocacy for mental health, and the importance of building community We created a video for Stations of the Cross that incorporated ”The Way of The Cross - Tree of Life” by Ron Zeilinger from St. Joseph’s Indian School in Chamberlain, SD along with Artwork by Leland Bell of the Wikwemikong Unceded First Nation. Overlaying Native American flute music was provided by our Leadership Circle member Bill Buchholtz. Hosting the First Station, we took part in the annual Good Friday

Walk for Justice, this time via Zoom, with over 140 participants.

While the pandemic made finding a language instructor who would be comfortable teaching in a virtual space a challenge, we were able to host a four-week Ojibwe Language workshop on Zoom. This allowed us to record the workshop and to continue to share the sessions in the future. We continue to partner with St. Benedict Parish on Anti-Racism Conversation Zoom meeting typically twice a month to educate ourselves, listen to each other and learn how we can grow to become better allies for our brothers and sisters who experience racism.” Currently we are discussing the topic of Native American Residential Schools.

In partnership with Northwestern University, we were able to take some youth and their families on a cultural teaching trip to Lac Du Flambeau, Wisconsin in late June. A traditional cultural facilitator taught them how to harvest birch bark and other traditional materials in building a canoe and wigwam. Throughout each stage of harvesting and constructing the wigwam, participants were taught prayers of thanksgiving in the Ojibwe language. We offered 19 youth workshops and meetings throughout the year. The youth planned every workshop and activity for the year and assigned themselves jobs during each event. It was inspiring to see them show up every other week and check-in with adult leadership to gauge their progress. They also checked in with each other to ensure regular attendance at the meetings. The amount of support they gave each other was amazing and uplifting. The youth also hosted 11 community events such as Friday Taco Drive-Thru, Family Prize Bingo and Trivia Nights via Zoom. Seven of these events incorporated collection of donations for the St. Kateri Senior Luncheon program. Overall, these youth-led community events and youth workshops had a little over 1200 participants through the year.

The school’s 3rd graders created cheerful greeting cards for all our elders and seniors, and creating pictures, words of cheer, and jokes for the month of April and May. In return we created a thank-you video for the students including pictures of some of our elders and seniors.

Although the pandemic put the Senior Luncheon program on hold, we were approved for a Senior Luncheon Drive-Thru and Delivery Service. Half of the participants were able to come and do curbside pickup at the St. Kateri Center. For the elders and seniors without transportation, we had a wonderful group of volunteers delivering the dinners to their homes. We continued to provide the Drive-Thru monthly. Along with our partner, American Indian Health Services of Chicago, we were able to host an outdoor picnic titled “Senior Shindig” with 80 seniors.

On a monthly average we had 56 participants at our luncheons.

Overall we served 98 individuals throughout the year.

We are grateful for the creative and innovative ways to continue to provide programming and fundraising efforts while still practicing Covid safety measures. Using Zoom allowed people, who would have had a difficult time commuting to the Kateri Center, the ability to participate conveniently from the safety of their homes. As a result, we were even able to include those members who had relocated to other states as well as participants from other native communities across the country, including Canada.

Religous Education Update ELAINE LINDIA, DIRECTOR OF CATECHEIS

At the end of the fiscal year, the Religious Education department experienced some changes. Daniel Hughes, our former Director of Catechesis, resigned from his position to pursue new opportunities. We want to thank him for his work over the last years and wish him well in his new endeavors. Having served the St Benedict community as Pastoral Associate since 2016, I am very excited to begin a new chapter in our Religious Education department and look forward to building a great foundation of faith for all of our students. After moving all meetings and gatherings to the Zoom platform due to the Covid 19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown and restrictions, our department made the transition to in person Sacramental celebrations in mid-July.

RCIA is the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. It is the process by which

new members are brought or otherwise fully initiated into the life of the Church. It is a program of prayer, conversion, learning, and faith sharing. One-on-one meetings were held with a candidate enabling her to receive her sacraments and join our faith community in the summer of 2021.

Religious Education at St Ben’s exists to help children and families grow in their relationship with

Jesus Christ. Classes for 2020-2021 were held virtually. The Religious Education team then prepared for a return to in person learning. Our program serves children Pre-K through 8th grade. Classes are taught by teams of volunteer catechists.

Sacraments

With the return to celebrating sacraments in person in July of 2020, First Communion and Confirmation celebrations that had been postponed due to the pandemic, were rescheduled and took place in September and October of 2020. There were 116 children who received First Holy Communion and 73 children who received Confirmation. We now will be able to host in person celebrations for First Communion and Confirmation taking place in 2022.

each week of an Old or New Testament reading and the Gospel of the Sunday Mass followed by a short reflection. There are plans to resume in person CLW in October 2021.

SPRED Special Religious Development program accompanies and welcomes families who have (a)

child(ren) with intellectual and or developmental disabilities, to form small faith communities and to participate in the liturgical life of our parish. Education was provided to 5 children in 2019 and 2020 who received First Reconciliation. We will be resuming in person instruction in 2021 and celebrate a First Eucharist Mass in the near future.

Baptism

In March 2020, all scheduled Baptisms were postponed. The first Baptism inside the Church was performed at end of June. After another pause to allow weekend Masses to be carefully reopened to the public, Baptisms began weekly beginning July 12, 2020. Baptismal preparation classes for parents are held online via Zoom. We now have returned to our normal schedule and can baptize up to 6 families on Sundays as well as offering the in Mass option on the 4th weekend of the month.

Forward in Our Faith Update Campaign Funds Available (June 30, 2021) Campaign reserves: $360,256.00

In July of 2015, our parish kicked off a five-year capital campaign known as Forward in Our Faith.

The campaign formally ended in June 2020. Another “thank you” to all those who supported this campaign with their generosity and for those who continue to support the campaign through our Sunday offertory collection.

As of June 30, 2021, there was $360,256.00 in remaining donations made to the campaign. These will and have been reinvested in our parish school buildings. By doing this, we remain faithful to the original objective for Phase III. Over the summer months, three of our elementary school first floor classrooms received some muchneeded renovations. After abating the classrooms of asbestos materials, we installed new laminate flooring, new ceilings, new LED lighting, new blinds and newly painted walls.

NEW MEETING SPACE (formal High School Library)

FIRST GRADE ROOM 114

Currently, our primary focus for the FIOF funds is the renovation of the upper school (former high school) library. This is a unique space on our campus that has a lot of capabilities. Our parish and school require many meeting spaces throughout the year. The renovation of the library with movable dividing walls will allow for multiple events to take place at the same time. This project will be partially funded by a generous family donation, and the rest will be covered by a portion of FIOF campaign funds.

We will continue to evaluate the facilities needs of the school campus and make prudent choices regarding the use of the remaining FIOF funds as they relate to the original spirit of the FIOF goals.

Donations made to the yellow Forward in Our Faith envelope or through GiveCentral will continue to be used for capital expenditures. Thank you for your continued generosity as the parish seeks to update, renovate and secure our campus infrastructure for generations to come.

Financial Highlights GEOFF PAUTSCH, DIRECTOR OF FINANCE

The last 18 months have proven just how much our faithful parishioners care for the parish and its ministries. Many parishes continue to struggle from the effects of the pandemic. However, our people never slowed their generosity to the parish. The parish, in turn, never stopped serving or reaching out to you. During this time, the parish took the opportunity to increase its visibility to the community through its live-streaming of Masses online and keeping our community engaged in their faith life. Thank you to all those who have continued their generosity throughout the pandemic. The parish has witnessed increased or sustained giving to the parish. However, there has also been a significant drop off of the number of parishioners supporting the parish.

Continuing the trend at the beginning of the pandemic, our church and school administration, along with our maintenance team, look for ways to limit our expenses in order to be better stewards of the gifts you entrust with the parish. While our church and school income decreased in the last fiscal year, our expenses decreased even more significantly. This included personnel, general office and utility expenses, all without sacrificing the integrity of our mission. These cost-cutting measures made a significant impact on the financial health of the parish during the pandemic.

Our parish applied for loans during both rounds of the Payroll Protection Program (PPP). The first loan in the amount of $1,168,000 has been forgiven. The second loan for $1,101,345 is in the forgiveness process. This second loan currently sits on our balance sheet as a liability until the parish completes the loan forgiveness program in the next few weeks. These loans helped put the parish in a stronger financial position. Despite the availability of these loans, the parish still continues to rely heavily on your generosity to keep the mission of the parish and school going strong for the short- and long-term.

Church

The Sunday and holy day collections account for 75% of the church’s income. Over the last two years the parish offertory saw a 9% decrease in fiscal year 2020 from the prior year and another 6% decrease last year. With parishioners slow to return back to the practice of their faith at Sunday Mass, there is a concern that this decreasing trend will continue. Fundraising only accounted for the church’s portion of the annual event sponsorships which we all canceled last year. Contributions to the Annual Catholic Appeal were less (which ultimately affects our parish rebate). Miscellaneous income including stole fees for funerals, weddings, baptisms and Mass stipends were down with less sacraments being administered during the pandemic. The church, however, does anticipate that some of these income items will rebound this fiscal year. Fortunately, as stated above, the church worked hard to find ways to decrease its spending in personnel costs, utilities, deferred maintenance and day-to-day office needs which did result in a significant drop in expenses. The 18% drop in church expenses last year ultimately helped the church end with a near breakeven. Assessments from the archdiocese and the large increase in property/casualty insurance are fixed costs.

School

For the last few years, an ‘in-house’ audit of our tuition and fee collection occurs to ensure that not only is the school correctly billing families, but also to make sure that the school administration has an accurate accounting for budgeting and forecasting. The school’s tuition and fee collection rate continues to be near

100%. Outside funding sources vary each year based on the number of scholarships received from the Illinois Tax Credit Scholarship program. Our largest significant drop of revenues was from the cancellation of summer camp in 2020 and low participation in our extended day program with many parents working from home.

Salaries and benefits for school personnel are our greatest expense, but from this expense comes our greatest asset, our teachers and staff. Appropriately staffing our school without sacrificing academic integrity is always a difficult process each year. And as always, miscellaneous expenses include a variety of items such as hospitality, campus ministry, admissions, advancement office, graduation, school nurse, guidance and athletic expenses. While our school income was down only 3% (about $180,000) last year, our expenses were down 9% (about $550,000). This resulted in a nominal surplus for the school.

Extraordinary

Our ordinary income and expenses don’t present an interesting story. However, our extraordinary income and expenses paint a different picture. Last fiscal year presented the parish with a few unique opportunities. For starters, the parish received a large $800,000+ bequest. Father Steve quickly gathered the Endowment Committee to discuss ways of investing this money for the long-term future of St. Benedict Parish. In March 2021, the parish created an endowment for long-term capital needs in the amount of $533,000 which included $500,000 from the bequest and $33,000 from other earmarked gifts.

The rest of the bequest has been put into savings for more short-term capital projects.

The past year’s stock market rebounded substantially, and therefore, both our new parish endowment and our parish educational endowment saw remarkable returns on our investments. Those quarterly returns and other gifts are reported under “endowments” in the report.

The parish is doing away with “Build Our Future.” The restricted funds from this fund have been exhausted on an array of projects. The funds for “Build Our Future” have come primarily from 10% of all fundraising net proceeds. Going forward, the 10% of fundraising net proceeds will be placed in the parish endowment account along with any memorials or bequests that come to the parish for long-term infrastructure needs.

The New Family Fee is assessed to new families of our school. New families are inheriting a school building that has had a lot of work done to it. The fee is to be used for special capital projects that come up throughout the year. In the past, this fee had its own bank account. In order to avoid “moving money around,” the New Family Fee account was closed and all past funds were transferred to the general operating account. The New Family Fee funds were transferred to the parish’s liabilities on the balance sheet. The expense of the New Family Fee is the transfer of funds to the parish liability account.

As stated above, our parish received forgiveness of the first round of PPP. This money is now reported as income and removed from the liability of last year. The additional “other” is proceeds of our COVID appeal last fall minus expenses for the new live-stream system in the church. Thank you for your generosity to this special appeal!

The capital expenditures last fiscal year include the following: 1) Rectory and some other miscellaneous school tuck pointing, 2) New courtyard/driveway gym doors, 3) New panels for our signs on Irving Park and the front of the school on the corner of Leavitt and Byron, 4) Campus-wide networking and new phone/ intercom system, and 5) A new gate on Irving Park and church railings. These projects were completed using residual Build Our Future funds and Forward in Our Faith funds.

Cash Balances

Our cash balances remain strong largely due to the PPP loans that the parish received. Our assets outweigh our liabilities. Our accounts payable reflects a large technology equipment purchase (student devices) that has been allocated out over three years. Our liabilities include restricted gifts made for school improvements, garage sale proceeds, and other church restricted gifts. The parish ministry holding includes all of the parish ministry funds in the general operating account including the Kateri Center, our human concern ministries, our music ministry, and our Home School Association funds.

Important Acknowledgements of Our Profound Gratitude ANNUAL SCHOOL FUND: A record $287,000 (November 2020). Thank you to all the parents, grandparents, parishioners and friends that supported this important School Advisory Board appeal. Last year’s budgetary goal of $175,000 was greatly surpassed. The overage was used for teacher and staff COVID gifts.

GALA: $185,000 (April 2020) net proceeds after Build our Future contribution and financial assistance Fund-A-Need ($48,980). This year’s event was again virtual and was a great celebration for the entire family to celebrate our parish community. Thank you to Eileen Hughes Padian and Linda Wolf for their leadership and to their team of volunteers who pulled off another extraordinary event. Save the date for this year’s “in-person” gala on Saturday, April 30, 2022.

BENFEST: Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, this event, rated as one of Chicago’s best street festivals, was not held in 2020 or 2021.

OKTOBERFEST: While the event was cancelled in 2020, we recently celebrated an outstanding event a few weeks ago. A parish community celebrating its heritage with carnival rides, beer and German music can mean only one thing, Oktoberfest at St. Benedict’s. The community spirit at this month’s event was amazing! Thank you to the new committee and the continued assistance of the Kattner family for their leadership of this great event.

GARAGE SALE: Similar to Oktoberfest, the garage sale took a year off due to the pandemic. However, this year, it came back with another rousing success. Thank you to Jen Patras and Ted Kreuser for their leadership as well as their team of volunteers for their countless hours of manual labor.

FUNRUN: over $115,000 (September 2020) There are so many people to thank on the HSA for the variety of events that they host and the multiple ways they support our parish school. Proceeds from this event went to fund teacher bonuses, COVID safety items for classrooms, technology needs, and teacher classroom needs, plus all the other amazing things the HSA does throughout the year.
